Abstract

In this article, we propose a silvicultural approach that takes soil health into account. Using a biblical metaphor, the first chapter highlights the forest’s critical role in the planet’s future, emphasizing that forest biodiversity is essential for sustaining a planet inhabited by complex life forms like humans. The second chapter focuses to the soil, explaining how the biological dynamics of the soil are interconnected with the forest cycle, demonstrating that vegetation and soil form a continuous, co-evolving system. The third chapter explores the possibility of extending the forest cycle to restore soil functionality, illustrating how the recycling of the forest’s biological past facilitates the emergence of a new, evolving soil-vegetation system. Examples of forest management practices in France, Italy, and Switzerland are presented, including graphs and mathematical models depicting the evolution of organic carbon in the soil and the distribution of tree stems by diameter, age, and stature. The description of uneven-aged Swiss forests, featuring fir and beech, is sourced from the Helvetica Pro-Silva website.

Abstract

Springtails (Collembola) inhabit soils from the Arctic to the Antarctic and comprise an estimated ~32% of all terrestrial arthropods on Earth. Here, we present a global, spatially-explicit database on springtail communities that includes 249,912 occurrences from 44,999 samples and 2,990 sites. These data are mainly raw sample-level records at the species level collected predominantly from private archives of the authors that were quality-controlled and taxonomically-standardised. Despite covering all continents, most of the sample-level data come from the European continent (82.5% of all samples) and represent four habitats: woodlands (57.4%), grasslands (14.0%), agrosystems (13.7%) and scrublands (9.0%). We included sampling by soil layers, and across seasons and years, representing temporal and spatial within-site variation in springtail communities. We also provided data use and sharing guidelines and R code to facilitate the use of the database by other researchers. This data paper describes a static version of the database at the publication date, but the database will be further expanded to include underrepresented regions and linked with trait data.

Abstract

Soil life supports the functioning and biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems. Springtails (Collembola) are among the most abundant soil arthropods regulating soil fertility and flow of energy through above- and belowground food webs. However, the global distribution of springtail diversity and density, and how these relate to energy fluxes remains unknown. Here, using a global dataset representing 2470 sites, we estimate the total soil springtail biomass at 27.5 megatons carbon, which is threefold higher than wild terrestrial vertebrates, and record peak densities up to 2 million individuals per square meter in the tundra. Despite a 20-fold biomass difference between the tundra and the tropics, springtail energy use (community metabolism) remains similar across the latitudinal gradient, owing to the changes in temperature with latitude. Neither springtail density nor community metabolism is predicted by local species richness, which is high in the tropics, but comparably high in some temperate forests and even tundra. Changes in springtail activity may emerge from latitudinal gradients in temperature, predation and resource limitation in soil communities. Contrasting relationships of biomass, diversity and activity of springtail communities with temperature suggest that climate warming will alter fundamental soil biodiversity metrics in different directions, potentially restructuring terrestrial food webs and affecting soil functioning.

Abstract

Soil organisms, including earthworms, are a key component of terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about their diversity, their distribution, and the threats affecting them. We compiled a global dataset of sampled earthworm communities from 6928 sites in 57 countries as a basis for predicting patterns in earthworm diversity, abundance, and biomass. We found that local species richness and abundance typically peaked at higher latitudes, displaying patterns opposite to those observed in aboveground organisms. However, high species dissimilarity across tropical locations may cause diversity across the entirety of the tropics to be higher than elsewhere. Climate variables were found to be more important in shaping earthworm communities than soil properties or habitat cover. The goal of the present study was to determine whether the habitat preference of collembolan species is more influenced by soil properties or by microclimate and whether the preference for a given soil matches the preference for the corresponding microclimate. To answer these questions, we set up a soil core transfer experiment between a forest and an adjacent pasture. We first eliminated the entire soil fauna from forest and pasture soil cores and inoculated them with a new community originated from forest or pasture. After enclosing them, in order to prevent exchanges of soil animals between treated soil and surrounding environment, soil cores were transplanted back to the field for four months and a half. The experimental design comprises every combination of three factors (community origin, soil nature and microclimate) for a total of 8 treatments. Twenty-two species were present in the experiment, 16 of which were present in more than 10% of the experimental soil cores. We determined habitat preference for these 16 species using a large dataset comprised of field observations in the same region. Results showed that most forest species did not withstand pasture microclimate, although some of them preferred pasture soil. Likewise several pasture species were favoured by the forest microclimate, some of them also preferring forest soil. We concluded that forest species were absent (or less abundant) in pastures because they are not resistant enough to drought, while pasture species were absent (or less abundant) in forests because of food requirements, and/or soil physicochemical properties such as soil pH and organic carbon content, and/or were less competitive. Moreover, when selecting their habitat, some species are submitted to a trade-off between preferences for different habitat features.

Abstract

The SOIL Action (22004) of the Joint Research Centre’s Land Management and Natural Hazards Unit (H07) has just completed a comprehensive collaborative project focusing exclusively on life in the soil. One of the resulting outputs is the first ever European Atlas of Soil Biodiversity. This atlas is the result of a collaboration between the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy and world leading experts in soil biodiversity from Europe and beyond. The atlas is a visually stunning publication of 128 pages, using striking photographs, informative texts and maps to explain and illustrate the great diversity of life in the across Europe. The atlas functions as a comprehensive guide to soil biology, allowing non-specialists to access information about this unseen world. The first part of the book provides an overview of the below ground environment, soil biota in general, the ecosystem functions that soil organism perform, the important value it has for human activities and relevance for global biogeochemical cycles. The second part is more of an 'Encyclopedia of Soil Biodiversity'. Starting with the smallest organisms such as the bacteria, this segment works through a range of taxonomic groups such as fungi, nematodes, insects and macro-fauna to illustrate the astonishing levels of heterogeneity of life in soil.

Abstract

Although much work has been done on factors which influence the patterning of species and species trait assemblages in a variety of groups such as plants, vertebrates and invertebrates, few studies have been realized at a broad geographic scale. We analyzed patterns of relationships between species, species trait distribution/assembly, and environmental variables from the west of Europe to Slovakia, Poland and Sweden. We created a database by compiling traits and occurrence data of European collembolan species, using literature and personal field studies embracing a large range of environmental gradients (vertical stratification, habitat closure, humus form, soil acidity and moisture, temperature, rainfall, altitude) over which Collembola are supposed to be distributed. Occurrences of the 58 best-documented species, environmental variables and species traits allowed us to (i) show which environmental variables impact the distribution of the 58 species at broad scale and (ii) document to what extent environmental variables and species trait assemblages are related and which trends could be found in trait/environment relationships. The impact of vertical stratification, habitat closure, humus form, soil acidity, soil moisture, temperature, and to a lesser extent rainfall and altitude on species distribution, firstly revealed by indirect gradient analysis (correspondence analysis, CA), was further shown to be significant by direct gradient analysis (canonical correspondence analysis, CCA). RLQ analyses were performed to find linear combination of variables of table R (environmental variables) and linear combinations of the variables of table Q (species traits) of maximum covariance weighted by species occurrence data contained in table L. RLQ followed by permutation tests showed that all tested environmental variables apparently contributed significantly to the assemblages of the twelve species traits studied. A convergence was observed between traits related to vertical stratification and those related to habitat closure/aperture. Well-developed locomotory organs (furcula, legs), presence of sensorial organs sensitive to air movements and light (e.g. trichobothria and eye spots), spherical body, large body size, pigmentation (UV protection and signaling) and sexual reproduction largely occur in epigeic and open habitats, while most of woodland and edaphic habitats are characterized by short locomotory appendages, small body size, high number of defense organs (pseudocelli), presence of post-antennal organs and parthenogenesis. Climate and especially temperature exert an effect on the assemblage of traits that are mostly present above-ground and in open habitats. The contribution of combinations of some environmental variables to the occurrence of each species trait was tested by linear, logistic or multinomial regression (Generalized Linear Models). Vertical stratification, followed by temperature, played a dominant role in the variation of the twelve studied traits. Relationships between traits and environment tested here shows that it is possible to use some traits as proxies to identify potential ecological preferences or tolerances of invertebrate species. However, a significant part of species distribution remained unexplained, probably partly because some traits, like ecophysiological ones, or traits involved in biotic interactions (e.g. competition) were unavailable. The present work is thus a first step towards the creation of models predicting changes in collembolan communities. Abstract

Temporal dynamics of edaphic communities affect numerous processes in forests and also strongly influence the soil’s organic matter status. We have linked long-term changes in the formation of organic matter (using humus micromorphological analyses) to changes in the soil’s community structure during a spruce forest cycle on acid soil. The study was carried out at four sites of different age-classes in the Tharandter forest, Germany. The composition of the deeper humus layers (OH, A) was stable. Herbaceous litter, recent spruce litter, fragmented spruce litter, decomposed litter and faeces and fungi, which contributed to the organic layer (OL and OH horizon), significantly changed during the forestry cycle, especially with the shift from the early stage to intermediate stages. Parallel changes of the faunal assemblage of the soil showed quantitative relations between major stages of the forest development, humus dynamics and soil community composition. The herbaceous litter was correlated with surface-dwelling Collembola and microbial properties with faeces and fungi. Our results suggest that the long-term stability of deep organic layers provides a refuge for decomposers and detritivores that allows a rapid response to both adverse and favourable conditions, taking place in OL and OF layers. Furthermore, the opening of the canopy in mature stands allows the decomposers to adapt to changes in resource input long before the collapse of the forest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Slash-and-burn cultivation in the humid tropics can cause changes in the composition of topsoil, depending on the duration of the fallow. We studied differences between practices, using the small-volume micromorphological method, to quantify the distribution of solid components in the topsoil, concentrating on plant organs and biogenic structures created by soil animals. We compared samples of topsoil from five plots, two at Maripasoula, an Aluku village along the Maroni river (French Guiana), with short fallow (= 8 years), and the other three at Elahe, a Wayana village along the same river, with long fallow (= 25 years). At both sites structures created by arthropods other than ants gave way to ones formed by ants and annelids under the influence of fire and cultivation. This change was more abrupt under long fallow, because of the time needed to restore the arthropod community. Charcoal and charred plant material were incorporated by earthworms into the mineral soil, forming dark grey to black aggregates. Charcoal became mixed with the mineral soil faster at Elahe than at Maripasoula, where it accumulated in the topsoil. The reason seems to be an imbalance between charcoal inputs (from repeated fires) and the capacity of burrowing animals (earthworms, ants) to mix it with the mineral soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
