Surface acoustic waves are a powerful tool for controlling quantum systems, including quantum dots (QDs), where the oscillating strain field can modulate the emission wavelengths. We integrate InAsP/InP nanowire QDs onto a thin-film lithium niobate platform and embed them within Si 3 N 4 -loaded waveguides. We achieve a 0.70 nm peak-to-peak wavelength modulation at 13 dBm using a single focused interdigital transducer (FIDT) operating at 400 MHz, and we double this amplitude to 1.4 nm by using two FIDTs as an acoustic cavity. Additionally, we independently modulate two QDs with an initial wavelength difference of 0.5 nm, both integrated on the same chip. We show that their modulated emissions overlap, demonstrating the potential to bring them to a common emission wavelength after spectral filtering. This local strain-tuning represents a significant step toward generating indistinguishable single photons from remote emitters heterogeneously integrated on a single chip, advancing on-chip quantum information processing with multiple QDs.

We present the theory and experimental results of a microwave photonic (MWP) filter based instantaneous frequency measurement system. A quantum dash mode-locked laser is used as an optical frequency comb source. With up to 41 flat comb lines and a real-time feedback loop for comb shaping, a set of MWP filters with linear frequency responses for either linear unit or dB unit are experimentally demonstrated. The maximum measurement frequency can be up to 20 GHz limited by the available test-and-measurement instruments. By using one MWP filter, the root-mean-square error is 51∼66 MHz, which can be improved to 42.2 MHz for linear unit, and 30.7 MHz for dB unit by using two MWP filters together.

We investigate the capabilities and limitations of quantum-dash mode-locked lasers (QD-MLLDs) as optical frequency comb sources in coherent optical communication systems. We demonstrate that QD-MLLDs are on par with conventional single-wavelength narrow linewidth laser sources and can support high symbol rates and modulation formats. We manage to transmit 64 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals up to 80 GBd over 80 km of standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), which highlights the distinctive phase noise performance of the QD-MLLD. Using a 38.5 GHz (6 dB bandwidth) silicon photonic (SiP) modulator, we achieve a maximum symbol rate of 104 GBd with 16QAM signaling and a maximum net rate of 416 Gb/s per carrier in a single polarization setup and after 80 km-SSMF transmission. We also compare QD-MLLD performance with commercial narrow-linewidth integrable tunable laser assemblies (ITLAs) and explore their potential for use as local oscillators (LOs) and signal carriers. The QD-MLLD has 45 comb lines usable for transmission at a frequency spacing of 25 GHz, and an RF linewidth of 35 kHz.

We present here a performance comparison of quantum-dash (Qdash) semiconductor amplifiers (SOAs) with three, five, eight, and twelve InAs dash layers grown on InP substrates. Other than the number of Qdash layers, the structures were identical. The eight-layer Qdash SOA gave the highest amplified spontaneous emission power (4.3 dBm) and chip gain (26.4 dB) at 1550 nm, with a 300 mA CW bias current and at 25 °C temperature, while SOAs with fewer Qdash layers (for example, three-layer Qdash SOA), had a wider ASE bandwidth (90 nm) and larger 3 dB gain saturated output power (18.2 dBm) in a shorter wavelength range. The noise figure (NF) of the SOAs increased nearly linearly with the number of Qdash layers. The longest gain peak wavelength of 1570 nm was observed for the 12-layer Qdash SOA. The most balanced performance was obtained with a five-layer Qdash SOA, with a 25.4 dB small-signal chip gain, 15.2 dBm 3 dB output saturated power, and 5.7 dB NF at 1532 nm, 300 mA and 25 °C. These results are better than those of quantum well SOAs reported in a recent review paper. The high performance of InAs/InP Qdash SOAs with different Qdash layers shown in this paper could be important for many applications with distinct requirements under uncooled scenarios.

We demonstrate photonic beamforming using a quantum-dash (QD) optical frequency comb (OFC) source. Thanks to the 25 GHz free spectral range (FSR) and up to 40 comb lines available from the QD OFC, we can implement phased antenna arrays (PAAs) with directional radiation and scanning. We consider two types of PAAs: a uniform linear array (ULA) and a uniform planar array (UPA). By selecting different comb lines with a programmable optical filter, we can tune the FSR of the OFC source and realize a discrete scanning function. We evaluate the beam squint of the ULAs, and the results show that we can achieve broadband operation. Finally, we show that we can achieve both directional radiation and scanning simultaneously using the UPA.

The integration of indistinguishable single photon sources in photonic circuits is a major prerequisite for on-chip quantum applications. Among the various high-quality sources, nanowire quantum dots can be efficiently coupled to optical waveguides because of their preferred emission direction along their growth direction. However, local tuning of the emission properties remains challenging. In this work, we transfer a nanowire quantum dot onto a bulk lithium niobate substrate and show that its emission can be dynamically tuned by acousto-optical coupling with surface acoustic waves. The purity of the single photon source is preserved during the strain modulation. We further demonstrate that the transduction is maintained even with a SiO 2 encapsulation layer deposited on top of the nanowire acting as the cladding of a photonic circuit. Quantum physics phenomena, entanglement and coherence, are crucial for quantum information protocols, but understanding these in systems with more than two parts is challenging due to increasing complexity. The W state, a multipartite entangled state, is notable for its robustness and benefits in quantum communication. Here, we generate eight-mode on-demand single-photon W states, using nanowire quantum dots and a silicon nitride photonic chip. We demonstrate a reliable and scalable technique for reconstructing the W state in photonic circuits using Fourier and real-space imaging, supported by the Gerchberg-Saxton phase retrieval algorithm. Additionally, we utilize an entanglement witness to distinguish between mixed and entangled states, thereby affirming the entangled nature of our generated state. The study provides a new imaging approach of assessing multipartite entanglement in W states, paving the way for further progress in image processing and Fourier-space analysis techniques for complex quantum systems.

Controlling the morphology and composition of semiconductor nano- and micro-structures is crucial for fundamental studies and applications. Here, Si-Ge semiconductor nanostructures were fabricated using photolithographically defined micro-crucibles on Si substrates. Interestingly, the nanostructure morphology and composition of these structures are strongly dependent on the size of the liquid-vapour interface (i.e., the opening of the micro-crucible) in the CVD deposition step of Ge. In particular, Ge crystallites nucleate in micro-crucibles with larger opening sizes (3.74-4.73 μm 2 ), while no such crystallites are found in micro-crucibles with smaller openings of 1.15 μm 2 . This interface area tuning also results in the formation of unique semiconductor nanostructures: lateral nano-trees (for smaller openings) and nano-rods (for larger openings). Further TEM imaging reveals that these nanostructures have an epitaxial relationship with the underlying Si substrate. This geometrical dependence on the micro-scale vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) nucleation and growth is explained within a dedicated model, where the incubation time for the VLS Ge nucleation is inversely proportional to the opening size. The geometric effect on the VLS nucleation can be used for the fine tuning of the morphology and composition of different lateral nano- and micro-structures by simply changing the area of the liquid-vapour interface.

A key resource in quantum-secured communication protocols are single photon emitters. For long-haul optical networks, it is imperative to use photons at wavelengths compatible with telecom single mode fibers. We demonstrate high purity single photon emission at 1.31 μm using deterministically positioned InP photonic waveguide nanowires containing single InAsP quantum dot-in-a-rod structures. At excitation rates that saturate the emission, we obtain a single photon collection efficiency at first lens of 27.6% and a probability of multiphoton emission of g (2) (0) = 0.021. We have also evaluated the performance of the source as a function of temperature. Multiphoton emission probability increases with temperature with values of 0.11, 0.34, and 0.57 at 77, 220 and 300 K, respectively, which is attributed to an overlap of temperature-broadened excitonic emission lines. These results are a promising step toward scalably fabricating telecom single photon emitters that operate under relaxed cooling requirements.

Background: Women remain underrepresented in Surgery in Aotearoa New Zealand (AoNZ). This study described interest in surgical careers by gender in the early postgraduate period and associated influencing factors., Methods: AoNZ medical graduates between 2012 and 2016 responding to an Exit Questionnaire (EQ) at graduation and 3 years later (PGY3) as part of the Medical Schools Outcomes Database and Longitudinal Tracking Project (MSOD) were included. Analyses of specialty preferences and influences by gender were performed., Results: Of 992 participants, 58% were women. At EQ, 158 participants (16%) had a surgical preference: 21% of men and 14% of women (P < 0.01). By PGY3, this was 20% of men and 10% of women (P < 0.01). A logistic regression found women were half as likely as men to have a surgical preference at PGY3. Those with a surgical preference at EQ were over 23 times more likely to have a surgical preference at PGY3, irrespective of gender. There were significant differences in self-reported career influencing factors between women and men at EQ and PGY3, as well as between PGY3 women with a surgical and those with a non-surgical preference. These included nature of the specialty, training requirements, lifestyle, family and personal factors., Conclusions: Increasing the proportion of women in Surgery requires a multifaceted approach starting during medical school and continuing through early postgraduate years. We have combined ultrasensitive force-based spin detection with high-fidelity spin control to achieve NMR diffraction (NMRd) measurement of ~2 million [Formula: see text]P spins in a [Formula: see text] volume of an indium-phosphide (InP) nanowire. NMRd is a technique originally proposed for studying the structure of periodic arrangements of spins, with complete access to the spectroscopic capabilities of NMR. We describe two experiments that realize NMRd detection with subangstrom precision. In the first experiment, we encode a nanometer-scale spatial modulation of the z -axis magnetization of [Formula: see text]P spins and detect the period and position of the modulation with a precision of <0.8 Å. In the second experiment, we demonstrate an interferometric technique, utilizing NMRd, to detect an angstrom-scale displacement of the InP sample with a precision of 0.07 Å. The diffraction-based techniques developed in this work extend the Fourier-encoding capabilities of NMR to the angstrom scale and demonstrate the potential of NMRd as a tool for probing the structure and dynamics of nanocrystalline materials.

We report on a platform for the production of single photon devices with a fabrication yield of 100%. The sources are based on InAsP quantum dots embedded within position-controlled bottom-up InP nanowires. Using optimized growth conditions, we produce large arrays of structures having highly uniform geometries. Collection efficiencies are as high as 83% and multiphoton emission probabilities as low as 0.6% with the distribution away from optimal values associated with the excitation of other charge complexes and re-excitation processes, respectively, inherent to the above-band excitation employed. Importantly, emission peak lineshapes have Lorentzian profiles indicating that linewidths are not limited by inhomogeneous broadening but rather pure dephasing, likely elastic carrier-phonon scattering due to a high phonon occupation. This work establishes nanowire-based devices as a viable route for the scalable fabrication of efficient single photon sources and provides a valuable resource for hybrid on-chip platforms currently being developed., (© 2022. We study experimentally and theoretically the in-plane magnetic field dependence of the coupling between dots forming a vertically stacked double dot molecule. The InAsP molecule is grown epitaxially in an InP nanowire and interrogated optically at millikelvin temperatures. The strength of interdot tunneling, leading to the formation of the bonding-antibonding pair of molecular orbitals, is investigated by adjusting the sample geometry. For specific geometries, we show that the interdot coupling can be controlled in-situ using a magnetic field-mediated redistribution of interdot coupling strengths. We demonstrate a reconfigurable microwave photonic (MWP) filter using a quantum dash (QDash) mode-locked laser (MLL) that can generate an optical frequency comb (OFC) with ∼50 comb lines and a free spectral range of 25 GHz. Thanks to the large number of comb lines, the MWP filter responses can be easily programmed by tailoring the OFC spectrum. We implement MWP filter responses with Gaussian, sinc, flat-top, and multiple peaks, as well as demonstrate that tuning of the central frequency. We achieve a minimum 3 dB bandwidth of ∼100 MHz for a sinc-shaped MWP filter, while the maximum out-of-band rejection can be up to ∼30 dB with Gaussian apodization. Our results show that the QDash-MLL is a promising OFC source for developing integrated and reconfigurable MWP filters.

Chip-scale optical frequency comb sources are ideal compact solutions to generate high speed optical pulses for applications in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and high-speed optical signal processing. Our previous studies have concentrated on the use of quantum dash based lasers, but here we present results from an InAs/InP quantum dot (QDot) C-band passively mode-locked laser (MLL) for frequency comb generation. By using this single-section QDot-MLL we demonstrate an aggregate line rate of 12.544 Tbit/s 16QAM data transmission capacity for both back-to-back (B2B) and over 100-km of standard single mode fiber (SSMF). This finding highlights the viability for InAs/InP QDot lasers to be used as a low-cost optical source for large-scale networks.

We present a compact, fibre-coupled single photon source using gradient-index (GRIN) lenses and an InAsP semiconductor quantum dot embedded within an InP photonic nanowire waveguide. A GRIN lens assembly is used to collect photons close to the tip of the nanowire, coupling the light immediately into a single mode optical fibre. The system provides a stable, high brightness source of fibre-coupled single photons. Using pulsed excitation, we demonstrate on-demand operation with a single photon purity of 98.5% when exciting at saturation in a device with a source-fibre collection efficiency of 35% and an overall single photon collection efficiency of 10%. We have developed and experimentally demonstrated a highly coherent and low noise InP-based InAs quantum dash (QDash) buried heterostructure (BH) C-band passively mode-locked laser (MLL) with a pulse repetition rate of 25 GHz for fiber-wireless integrated fronthaul 5G new radio (NR) systems. The device features a broadband spectrum providing over 46 equally spaced highly coherent and low noise optical channels with an optical phase noise and integrated relative intensity noise (RIN) over a frequency range of 10 MHz to 20 GHz for each individual channel typically less than 466.5 kHz and -130 dB/Hz, respectively, and an average total output power of ∼50 mW per facet. Moreover, the device exhibits low RF phase noise with measured RF beat-note linewidth down to 3 kHz and estimated timing jitter between any two adjacent channels of 5.5 fs. By using this QDash BH MLL device, we have successfully demonstrated broadband optical heterodyne based radio-over-fiber (RoF) fronthaul wireless links at 5G NR in the underutilized spectrum of around 25 GHz with a total bit rate of 16-Gb/s. The device performance is experimentally evaluated in an end-to-end fiber-wireless system in real-time in terms of error vector magnitude (EVM) and bit error rate (BER) by generating, transmitting and detecting 4-Gbaud 16-QAM RF signals over 0.5-m to 2-m free-space indoor wireless channel through a total length of 25.22 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) with EVM and BER under 8.4% and 2.9 × 10 -5 , respectively. The intrinsic characteristics of the device in conjunction with its system transmission performance indicate that QDash BH MLLs can be readily used in fiber-wireless integrated systems of 5G and beyond wireless communication networks.

For nanowire-based sources of non-classical light, the rate at which photons are generated and the ability to efficiently collect them are determined by the nanowire geometry. Using selective-area vapour-liquid-solid epitaxy, we show how it is possible to control the nanowire geometry and tailor it to optimise device performance. High efficiency single photon generation with negligible multi-photon emission is demonstrated using a quantum dot embedded in a nanowire having a geometry tailored to optimise both collection efficiency and emission rate.

Photonics-based quantum information technologies require efficient, high emission rate sources of single photons. Position-controlled quantum dots embedded within a broadband nanowire waveguide provide a fully scalable route to fabricating highly efficient single-photon sources. However, emission rates for single-photon devices are limited by radiative recombination lifetimes. Here, we demonstrate a multiplexed single-photon source based on a multidot nanowire. Using epitaxially grown nanowires, we incorporate multiple energy-tuned dots, each optimally positioned within the nanowire waveguide, providing single photons with high efficiency. This linear scaling of the single-photon emission rate with number of emitters is demonstrated using a five-dot nanowire with an average multiphoton emission probability of <4% when excited at saturation. This represents the first ever demonstration of multiple single-photon emitters deterministically incorporated in a single photonic device and is a major step toward achieving GHz single-photon emission rates from a scalable multi-quantum-dot system.

This paper presents an InAs/InP quantum dash (QD) C-band passively mode-locked laser (MLL) with a channel spacing of 34.224 GHz. By using this QD-MLL we demonstrate an aggregate 5.376 Tbit/s PAM-4 data transmission capacity both for back-to-back (B2B) and over 25-km of standard single mode fiber (SSMF). This represents the first demonstration of QD-MLL acting as error-free operation at an aggregate data transmission capacity of 5.376 Tbit/s for some filtered individual channels. This finding highlights the viability for InAs/InP QD lasers to be used as a low-cost optical source for data center networks.

Sources of quantum light that utilize photonic nanowire designs have emerged as potential candidates for high efficiency non-classical light generation in quantum information processing. In this review we cover the different platforms used to produce nanowire-based sources, highlighting the importance of waveguide design and material properties in achieving optimal performance. The limitations of the sources are identified and routes to optimization are proposed. State-of-the-art nanowire sources are compared to other solid-state quantum emitter platforms with regard to the key metrics of single photon purity, indistinguishability and entangled-pair fidelity to maximally entangled Bell states. We also discuss the unique ability of the nanowire platform to incorporate multiple emitters in the same optical mode and consider potential applications. Finally, routes to on-chip integration are discussed and the challenges facing the development of a nanowire-based scalable architecture are presented.

Integration of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors and quantum sources with photonic waveguides is crucial for realizing advanced quantum integrated circuits. However, scalability is hindered by stringent requirements on high-performance detectors. Here we overcome the yield limitation by controlled coupling of photonic channels to pre-selected detectors based on measuring critical current, timing resolution, and detection efficiency. As a proof of concept of our approach, we demonstrate a hybrid on-chip full-transceiver consisting of a deterministically integrated detector coupled to a selected nanowire quantum dot through a filtering circuit made of a silicon nitride waveguide and a ring resonator filter, delivering 100 dB suppression of the excitation laser. In addition, we perform extensive testing of the detectors before and after integration in the photonic circuit and show that the high performance of the superconducting nanowire detectors, including timing jitter down to 23 ± 3 ps, is maintained. Our approach is fully compatible with wafer-level automated testing in a cleanroom environment.

Semiconductor quantum dots are crucial parts of the photonic quantum technology toolbox because they show excellent single-photon emission properties in addition to their potential as solid-state qubits. Recently, there has been an increasing effort to deterministically integrate single semiconductor quantum dots into complex photonic circuits. Despite rapid progress in the field, it remains challenging to manipulate the optical properties of waveguide-integrated quantum emitters in a deterministic, reversible, and nonintrusive manner. Here we demonstrate a new class of hybrid quantum photonic circuits combining III-V semiconductors, silicon nitride, and piezoelectric crystals. Using a combination of bottom-up, top-down, and nanomanipulation techniques, we realize strain tuning of a selected, waveguide-integrated, quantum emitter and a planar integrated optical resonator. Our findings are an important step toward realizing reconfigurable quantum-integrated photonics, with full control over the quantum sources and the photonic circuit.

We report on the site-selected growth of bright single InAsP quantum dots embedded within InP photonic nanowire waveguides emitting at telecom wavelengths. We demonstrate a dramatic dependence of the emission rate on both the emission wavelength and the nanowire diameter. With an appropriately designed waveguide, tailored to the emission wavelength of the dot, an increase in the count rate by nearly 2 orders of magnitude (0.4 to 35 kcps) is obtained for quantum dots emitting in the telecom O-band, showing high single-photon purity with multiphoton emission probabilities down to 2%. Using emission-wavelength-optimized waveguides, we demonstrate bright, narrow-line-width emission from single InAsP quantum dots with an unprecedented tuning range of 880 to 1550 nm. These results pave the way toward efficient single-photon sources at telecom wavelengths using deterministically grown InAsP/InP nanowire quantum dots.

We have used an external cavity self-injection feedback locking (SIFL) system to simultaneously reduce the optical linewidth of over 39 individual wavelength channels of an InAs/InP quantum dot (QD) coherent comb laser (CCL). Linewidth reduction from a few MHz to less than 200 kHz is observed. Measured phase noise spectra clearly indicate a significant decrease in phase noise in the frequency range above 2 kHz. The RF beating signal between two adjacent channels also shows a substantial reduction in 3-dB linewidth from 10 kHz to 300 Hz with the SIFL system, and a corresponding drop in baseline level (-27 dB to -50 dB).

Objectives: To estimate the efficacy of selection tools employed by medical schools for predicting the binary outcomes of completing or not completing medical training and passing or failing a key examination; to investigate the potential usefulness of selection algorithms that do not allow low scores on one tool to be compensated by higher scores on other tools., Design, Setting and Participants: Data from four consecutive cohorts of students (3378 students, enrolled 2007-2010) in five undergraduate medical schools in Australia and New Zealand were analysed. Predictor variables were student scores on selection tools: prior academic achievement, Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT), and selection interview. Outcome variables were graduation from the program in a timely fashion, or passing the final clinical skills assessment at the first attempt., Main Outcome Measures: Optimal selection cut-scores determined by discriminant function analysis for each selection tool at each school; efficacy of different selection algorithms for predicting student outcomes., Results: For both outcomes, the cut-scores for prior academic achievement had the greatest predictive value, with medium to very large effect sizes (0.44-1.22) at all five schools. UMAT scores and selection interviews had smaller effect sizes (0.00-0.60). Meeting one or more cut-scores was associated with a significantly greater likelihood of timely graduation in some schools but not in others., Conclusions: An optimal cut-score can be estimated for a selection tool used for predicting an important program outcome. A "sufficient evidence" selection algorithm, founded on a non-compensatory model, is feasible, and may be useful for some schools.

We have developed an InAs/InP quantum dot (QD) C-band coherent comb laser (CCL) module with actively stabilized absolute wavelength and power, and channel spacing of 34.462 GHz with ± 100 ppm accuracy. The total output power is up to 46 mW. The integrated average relative intensity noise (RIN) values of the lasing spectrum and a filtered single channel at 1540.19 nm were -165.6 dB/Hz and -130.3 dB/Hz respectively in the frequency range from 10 MHz to 10 GHz. The optical linewidth of the 45 filtered individual channels between 1531.77 nm to 1543.77 nm ranged from 850 kHz to 2.16 MHz. We have also analyzed the noise behaviors of each individual channel.

Quantum light plays a pivotal role in modern science and future photonic applications. Since the advent of integrated quantum nanophotonics different material platforms based on III-V nanostructures-, colour centers-, and nonlinear waveguides as on-chip light sources have been investigated. Each platform has unique advantages and limitations; however, all implementations face major challenges with filtering of individual quantum states, scalable integration, deterministic multiplexing of selected quantum emitters, and on-chip excitation suppression. Here we overcome all of these challenges with a hybrid and scalable approach, where single III-V quantum emitters are positioned and deterministically integrated in a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor-compatible photonic circuit. We demonstrate reconfigurable on-chip single-photon filtering and wavelength division multiplexing with a foot print one million times smaller than similar table-top approaches, while offering excitation suppression of more than 95 dB and efficient routing of single photons over a bandwidth of 40 nm. Our work marks an important step to harvest quantum optical technologies' full potential.Combining different integration platforms on the same chip is currently one of the main challenges for quantum technologies. Here, Elshaari et al. show III-V Quantum Dots embedded in nanowires operating in a CMOS compatible circuit, with controlled on-chip filtering and tunable routing.

Global, secure quantum channels will require efficient distribution of entangled photons. Long distance, low-loss interconnects can only be realized using photons as quantum information carriers. However, a quantum light source combining both high qubit fidelity and on-demand bright emission has proven elusive. Here, we show a bright photonic nanostructure generating polarization-entangled photon pairs that strongly violates Bell's inequality. A highly symmetric InAsP quantum dot generating entangled photons is encapsulated in a tapered nanowire waveguide to ensure directional emission and efficient light extraction. We collect ~200 kHz entangled photon pairs at the first lens under 80 MHz pulsed excitation, which is a 20 times enhancement as compared to a bare quantum dot without a photonic nanostructure. The performed Bell test using the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality reveals a clear violation (S CHSH  > 2) by up to 9.3 standard deviations. By using a novel quasi-resonant excitation scheme at the wurtzite InP nanowire resonance to reduce multi-photon emission, the entanglement fidelity (F = 0.817 ± 0.002) is further enhanced without temporal post-selection, allowing for the violation of Bell's inequality in the rectilinear-circular basis by 25 standard deviations. Our results on nanowire-based quantum light sources highlight their potential application in secure data communication utilizing measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution and quantum repeater protocols.

In semiconductor lasers, current injection not only provides the optical gain, but also induces variation of the refractive index, as governed by the Kramers-Krönig relation. The linear coupling between the changes of the effective refractive index and the modal gain is described by the linewidth broadening factor, which is responsible for many static and dynamic features of semiconductor lasers. Intensive efforts have been made to characterize this factor in the past three decades. In this paper, we propose a simple, flexible technique for measuring the linewidth broadening factor of semiconductor lasers. It relies on the stable optical injection locking of semiconductor lasers, and the linewidth broadening factor is extracted from the residual side-modes, which are supported by the amplified spontaneous emission. This new technique has great advantages of insensitivity to thermal effects, the bias current, and the choice of injection-locked mode. In addition, it does not require the explicit knowledge of optical injection conditions, including the injection strength and the frequency detuning. The standard deviation of the measurements is less than 15%.

A major step toward fully integrated quantum optics is the deterministic incorporation of high quality single photon sources in on-chip optical circuits. We show a novel hybrid approach in which preselected III-V single quantum dots in nanowires are transferred and integrated in silicon based photonic circuits. The quantum emitters maintain their high optical quality after integration as verified by measuring a low multiphoton probability of 0.07 ± 0.07 and emission line width as narrow as 3.45 ± 0.48 GHz. Our approach allows for optimum alignment of the quantum dot light emission to the fundamental waveguide mode resulting in very high coupling efficiencies. We estimate a coupling efficiency of 24.3 ± 1.7% from the studied single-photon source to the photonic channel and further show by finite-difference time-domain simulations that for an optimized choice of material and design the efficiency can exceed 90%.

Background: Azithromycin prophylaxis has been shown to reduce COPD exacerbations but there is poor evidence for other antibiotics. We compared exacerbation rates in COPD patients with a history of frequent exacerbations (at least three moderate or severe COPD exacerbations in the past two years) during a 12-week treatment course and over a subsequent 48-week follow up period., Results: 292 patients were randomised to one of three treatments for 12 weeks: roxithromycin 300 mg daily and doxycycline 100 mg daily (n = 101); roxithromycin 300 mg daily (n = 97); or matching placebos (n = 94). There were no differences in the annualised moderate and severe exacerbation rates after treatment with roxithromycin/doxycycline (2.83 (95 % CI 2.37-3.40)) or roxithromycin only (2.69 (2.26-3.21)) compared to placebo (2.5 (2.08-3.03)) (p = 0.352 and p = 0.5832 respectively). Furthermore, there were no differences in the annualised exacerbation rates during 12-week treatment with roxithromycin/doxycycline (1.64 (95 % CI 1.17-2.30)), roxithromycin only (1.75 (1.24-2.41)) or placebo (2.23 (1.68-3.03)) (p = 0.1709 and p = 0.2545 respectively). There were also no significant differences between groups for spirometry or quality of life scores over either the 12-week treatment or 48-week post-treatment periods. Both active treatments were associated with nausea but otherwise adverse events were comparable among treatment groups., Conclusions: Twelve-weeks of prophylaxis with roxithromycin/doxycycline combination or roxithromycin alone did not reduce COPD exacerbations in patients with history of frequent exacerbations. These findings do not support the use of these antibiotics to prevent exacerbations in COPD patients.

In this Letter, we present entanglement generated from a novel structure: a single InAsP quantum dot embedded in an InP nanowire. These structures can grow in a site-controlled way and exhibit high collection efficiency; we detect 0.5 million biexciton counts per second coupled into a single mode fiber with a standard commercial avalanche photo diode. If we correct for the known setup losses and detector efficiency, we get an extraction efficiency of 15(3) %. For the measured polarization entanglement, we observe a fidelity of 0.76(2) to a reference maximally entangled state as well as a concurrence of 0.57(6).

A bright photon source that combines high-fidelity entanglement, on-demand generation, high extraction efficiency, directional and coherent emission, as well as position control at the nanoscale is required for implementing ambitious schemes in quantum information processing, such as that of a quantum repeater. Still, all of these properties have not yet been achieved in a single device. Semiconductor quantum dots embedded in nanowire waveguides potentially satisfy all of these requirements; however, although theoretically predicted, entanglement has not yet been demonstrated for a nanowire quantum dot. Here, we demonstrate a bright and coherent source of strongly entangled photon pairs from a position-controlled nanowire quantum dot with a fidelity as high as 0.859±0.006 and concurrence of 0.80±0.02. The two-photon quantum state is modified via the nanowire shape. Our new nanoscale entangled photon source can be integrated at desired positions in a quantum photonic circuit, single-electron devices and light-emitting diodes.

Quantum communication as well as integrated photonic circuits require single photons propagating in a well-defined Gaussian mode. However, tailoring the emission mode to a Gaussian remains an unsolved challenge for solid-state quantum emitters due to their random positioning in the host material or photonic structure. Here, we overcome these limitations by embedding a semiconductor quantum dot in a tapered nanowire waveguide. Owing to the deterministic positioning of the emitter in the waveguide, we demonstrate a Gaussian emission profile in the far field. Hence, we further couple the emission into a single-mode optical fiber with a record efficiency of 93%, thereby addressing a major hurdle for practical implementation of single photon sources in emerging photonic technologies.

Semiconductor nanowires offer a versatile platform for the fabrication of new nanoelectronic and nanophotonic devices. These devices will require a high level of control of the nanowire position in relation to both other components of the device and to other nanowires. We demonstrate unprecedented control of the position of InAs nanowires using selective-area vapor-liquid-solid epitaxy (VLS) on an InP ridge template. The high level of control allows us to design structures which connect individual nanowires through coalescence of their catalyst particles. The interconnection process acts as a perturbation to the geometry of the nanowire system that can contribute to the understanding of droplet dynamics in VLS growth. Postgrowth imaging reveals a complex sequence of droplet configurations, including predicted geometries that have not previously been observed.

We report on the ultraclean emission from single quantum dots embedded in pure wurtzite nanowires. Using a two-step growth process combining selective-area and vapor-liquid-solid epitaxy, we grow defect-free wurtzite InP nanowires with embedded InAsP quantum dots, which are clad to diameters sufficient for waveguiding at λ ~ 950 nm. The absence of nearby traps, at both the nanowire surface and along its length in the vicinity of the quantum dot, manifests in excitonic transitions of high spectral purity. Narrow emission line widths (30 μeV) and very-pure single photon emission with a probability of multiphoton emission below 1% are achieved, both of which were not possible in previous work where stacking fault densities were significantly higher.

The interplay between crystal phase purity and radial growth in InP nanowires is investigated. By modifying the growth rate and V/III ratio, regions of high or low stacking fault density can be controllably introduced into wurtzite nanowires. It is found that regions with high stacking fault density encourage radial growth. Through careful choice of growth conditions pure wurtzite InP nanowires are then grown which exhibit narrow 4.2 K photoluminescence linewidths of 3.7 meV at 1.490 meV, and no evidence of emission related to stacking faults or zincblende insertions.

We report on the observation of a dynamical thermal effect in InGaAsP microtubes at telecom wavelengths. The microtubes are fabricated by releasing a strained semiconductor bilayer and are picked up by abruptly tapered optical fibers for subsequent coupling with adiabatically tapered optical fibers. As a result of absorption by InAs quantum dots embedded in the tube structure, these microtubes show dynamical thermal effects at wavelengths around 1525 nm and 1578 nm, while they are passive at longer wavelengths near 1634 nm. The photon absorption induced thermal effect is visualized by generating a pair of microbottles. The dynamical thermal effect can be avoided or exploited for passive or active applications by utilizing appropriate resonance wavelengths.

This Letter introduces an enhanced cavity-waveguide coupling architecture based upon slow-light engineering in a two-port photonic crystal system. After analyzing the system transmittance using coupled-mode theory, the system is probed experimentally and shown to have increased transmittance due to the enhanced cavity-waveguide coupling. Such a coupling architecture may facilitate next-generation planar lightwave circuitry such as onchip quantum information processing or high precision light-matter sensing applications.

Introduction: New Zealand is facing a general practice workforce crisis, especially in rural communities. Medical school entrants from low decile schools or rural locations may be more likely to choose rural general practice as their career path., Aim: To determine whether a relationship exists between secondary school decile rating, the size of the town of origin of medical students and their subsequent medical career intentions., Methods: University of Auckland medical students from 2006 to 2008 completed an entry questionnaire on a range of variables thought important in workforce determination. Analyses were performed on data from the 346 students who had attended a high school in New Zealand., Results: There was a close relationship between size of town of origin and decile of secondary school. Most students expressed interests in a wide range of careers, with students from outside major cities making slightly fewer choices on average., Discussion: There is no strong signal from these data that career specialty choices will be determined by decile of secondary school or size of town of origin. An increase in the proportion of rural students in medical programmes may increase the number of students from lower decile schools, without adding another affirmative action pathway.

We present a detailed study of the parameters which affect the geometrical perfection of nanopyramids used for the site-selected nucleation of quantum dots. Through an understanding of crystal facet formation, we demonstrate that undesirable high index planes can be suppressed using carefully optimized lithography together with properly orientated source fluxes in the growth reactor. High quality InP nanopyramids are reported with individual InAs/InP quantum dots positioned with high precision. This represents an important milestone for the fabrication of complex quantum dot based nanophotonic devices.
