Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) is a polyester, produced naturally by microorganisms, with excellent biocompatibility. Corona and radio-frequency (RF) plasma treatment were applied in order to improve the degradation process of PHBV. Samples were subjected to an accelerated weathering test for 500, 1000, and 2000 h of weathering exposure and to natural weathering for one year. Various analytical, spectroscopic, and microscopic techniques have been used to analyze the degradation process. This study revealed that corona and RF plasma treatment acted as a hydrolytic and ultraviolet light (UV) degradation promoter for PHBV. Both plasma treatments chemically modify the PHBV surface resulting in better wettability contributing to the hydrolytic degradation. Microscopic analysis revealed a rougher defects-containing surface of plasma-treated PHBV in comparison with untreated PHBV after the degradation process, promoting deeper water diffusion and UV penetration. The photo- and hydrolytic degradation caused significant surface changes of plasma-treated PHBV after 2000 h of accelerated weathering and one year of natural weathering. Moreover, deterioration in mechanical properties has been more pronounced in the RF plasma-treated samples. Synthesis of a new family of polymers having a polydisulfide structure can be conducted from sulfobetaine-based derivative of natural (R)-lipoic acid. A polydisulfide backbone of polymer can be depolymerized by response to external stimuli and sulfobetaine pendant groups ensure the upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behaviour temperatures that can be modulated according to the nature of the solvent and concentration. Sulfobetaine-bearing polydisulfides were synthesized from dithiolane derivatives and then characterized. UCST behavior of the polymers in water and in mixtures containing different alcohols (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol) was investigated. The regeneration of monomers from the polymers in response to external stimuli was examined using UV–vis and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Tunable surface wettability were shown on the grafted polymers. Decreasing polarity and/or increasing alcohol percentage in the water mixtures induced an increase in the cloud points of the polymers in the solutions. Thermoresponsive behaviour were repeatable and fully reversible with negligible hysteresis from aggregate to unimer state. The regeneration of monomers by depolymerization was tunable by temperature and sunlight. A thickness dependence on surface wettability was observed on wafers covalently modified with polydisulfides. Abstract Polymer-metal nanocomposites with enhanced mechanical, optical, electrical, dielectric, and antimicrobial properties are currently in high demand for many industrial applications. Here, we study and present the effect of UV-reduced silver nanoparticles on the synthesis of polyaniline-polyvinyl alcohol-silver nanocomposites (PPVA-Ag) and utilize them to make a humidity sensor and antimicrobial agent. A thorough study of the surface morphology of the prepared films using SEM, AFM, and profilometry is performed; it is found that uniform film is formed in all these cases. These studies show that an increase in Ag concentration leads to an increase in the surface micro roughness of the PPVA-Ag film. XPS determines the chemical composition of the prepared PPVA-Ag nanocomposites. At different humidity conditions, the electrical resistivity of the PPVA-Ag nanocomposites is measured. The results show uniform changes in resistivity with an increase in humidity and good repeatability. In this study, two quaternary ammonium salts derived from l -lipoic acid were applied for self-assembled monolayers formation on rough structured gold surface. The derivatives differ in functionality since one possesses simple quaternary ammonium group whereas the other one is carboxybetaine ester containing quaternary ammonium group with pH hydrolysable ester group as a pendant. The response of surface wettability to ion exchange between Cl − and perfluorooctanoate, kinetics and gradient wettability were examined by water contact angle measurement and confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, adhesion forces related to applied counterion on the entire surface and after hydrolysis were investigated by atomic force microscopy measurement at nanometer scales. A dramatic change in wettability upon counterion exchange from superhydrophilic for Cl − to very or superhydrophobic for perfluorooctanoate in a repeatable manner was observed for both derivatives. Kinetics of counterion exchanges revealed faster hydration of simple quaternary derivate. The wettability gradient could be designed from superhydrophobic to superhydrophilic either in a reversible manner by simple immersion of the modified surface in a counterion solution modulated by ionic strength or in an irreversible manner for carboxybetaine ester derivate by time-controlled hydrolysis to charge balanced carboxybetaine. Polymers/metal laminates are often used to improve physical and mechanical properties, especially those required in building applications. A flat aluminum composite panel (ACP) consisted mainly of two thin metal sheets usually made of aluminum (Al) and a non-metal core, such as polyethylene (PE). The lack of adhesion associated with the low wettability of PE is a serious problem. An eco-friendly, dry, non-destructive corona treatment technique can be applied to solve this problem. In this work, the use of a corona treatment to enhance the adhesion properties of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) was studied. The changes in surface and adhesion properties were thoroughly analyzed using various analytical techniques and methods to obtain the optimal parameters for corona discharge using contact angle measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM force adhesion measurements were used to analyze the effect of the corona treatment on the adhesion enhancement of LLDPE, and the peel tests confirmed a significant increase in peel resistance in the LLDPE/Al laminate. Simple and robust methods for modifying hydrophobic polymer surfaces with zwitterionic polymers using UV irradiation were developed. Two random zwitterionic copolymers consisting of either carboxybetaine or sulfobetaine methacrylamide monomers and monomers bearing a photolabile azidophenyl group were directly photoimmobilized on polymeric surfaces (polyester, polyethylene and polystyrene) via covalent interactions in a spatially controlled manner. These copolymers were also electrospun to form self-standing mats. The modified surfaces were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and contact angle measurements. The electrospinning method involved the use of a trifluoroethanol solution with a copolymer concentration in the range from 2 to 10 wt.%. We describe a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on a gold surface with a carboxybetaine ester functionality to control the interaction between DNA and gold nanoparticles via pH. The negatively charged phosphate backbone of DNA interacts with and adsorbs to the positively charged carboxybetaine esters on the SAM. DNA release can be achieved by the hydrolysis of carboxybetaine ester (CBE) to a zwitterionic carboxybetaine state. Furthermore, the adsorption of negatively charged citrate-capped gold nanoparticles to a SAM-modified plain gold surface can be controlled by the pH. The SAM based on carboxybetaine ester allows for the homogeneous adsorption of particles, whereas the SAM after hydrolysis at high pH repels AuNP adsorption. The aim of this study is to compare the graphene produced using a biotechnological method (Escherichia coli) with the graphene produced by Hummers’ method (a chemical method) and to study the effect on the energy consumption and environment. The results indicated that the chemical reduction process has higher energy consumption, approximately 1642 Wh, than the energy consumption of the biotechnological reduction process, which is 5 Wh. The potential of global warming (GWP 100) improved by 71% using the biotechnological route for the production of graphene. Abiotic depletion, the photochemical ozone creation potential, and marine aquatic ecotoxicity potential were improved when the biological route was employed, compared with the chemical route. The eutrophication potential, terrestrial ecotoxicity, and ozone depletion layer changed very little since the main variables involved in the production of graphene oxide and waste management are the same. The biotechnological method can be considered a green technique for the production of graphene, especially given the reduction in the negative effects on global warming, abiotic depletion, the photochemical ozone creation potential, and the marine aquatic ecotoxicity potential. Low-temperature plasma was used to improve the surface and adhesive properties of wood. The pre-treatment of wood surfaces using radio-frequency (RF) discharge plasma is attractive for various wood applications, mainly because of the high efficiency and low production cost of the process. In addition, a significant increase in the polar component of the wood surface energy, which is associated with the presence of acid–base interactions (electron donor–acceptor bonds), after modification by RF discharge plasma was identified. The treatment of wood by RF plasma exhibited an aging effect, with the modified surface never recovering its initial hydrophobic state. Indeed, the enhancement of the wettability of wood is necessary for promoting better adhesion with water-based adhesives and coatings, which is currently the subject of ongoing study. Abstract: Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) belongs to commodity polymer materials applied in biomedical applications due to its favorable mechanical and chemical properties. The main disadvantage of LDPE in biomedical applications is low resistance to bacterial infections. An antibacterial modification of LDPE appears to be a solution to this problem. In this paper, the chitosan and chitosan/pectin multilayer was immobilized via polyacrylic acid (PAA) brushes grafted on the LDPE surface. The grafting was initiated by a low-temperature plasma treatment of the LDPE surface. Surface and adhesive properties of the samples prepared were investigated by surface analysis techniques. An antibacterial effect was confirmed by inhibition zone measurements of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The chitosan treatment of LDPE led to the highest and most clear inhibition zones (35mm2 for E. coli and 275mm2 for S. aureus). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Polyethylene (PE) is one of the most widely used polymers in many industrial applications. Biomedical uses seem to be attractive, with increasing interest. However, PE it prone to infections and its additional surface treatment is indispensable. An increase in resistance to infections can be achieved by treating PE surfaces with substances containing antibacterial groups such as triclosan (5-Chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenol) and chlorhexidine (1,1'-Hexamethylenebis[5-(4-chlorophenyl)biguanide]). This work has examined the impact of selected antibacterial substances immobilized on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) via polyacrylic acid (PAA) grafted on LDPE by low-temperature barrier discharge plasma. This LDPE surface treatment led to inhibition of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus adhesion; the first causes intestinal disease, peritonitis, mastitis, pneumonia, septicemia, the latter is the reason for wound and urinary tract infections. This paper addresses the preparation and characterization of efficient adsorbents for tertiary treatment (oil content below 100 ppm) of oil/water emulsions. Powdered low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was modified by radio-frequency plasma discharge and then used as a medium for the treatment of emulsified diesel oil/water mixtures in the concentration range from 75 ppm to 200 ppm. Plasma treatment significantly increased the wettability of the LDPE powder, which resulted in enhanced sorption capability of the oil component from emulsions in comparison to untreated powder. Emulsions formed from distilled water and commercial diesel oil (DO) with concentrations below 200 ppm were used as a model of oily polluted water. The emulsions were prepared using ultrasonication without surfactant. The droplet size was directly proportional to sonication time and ranged from 135 nm to 185 nm. A sonication time of 20 min was found to be sufficient to prepare stable emulsions with an average droplet size of approximately 150 nm. The sorption tests were realized in a batch system. The effect of contact time and initial oil concentrations were studied under standard atmospheric conditions at a stirring speed of 340 rpm with an adsorbent particle size of 500 microns. The efficiency of the plasma-treated LDPE powder in oil removal was found to be dependent on the initial oil concentration. It decreased from 96.7% to 79.5% as the initial oil concentration increased from 75 ppm to 200 ppm. The amount of adsorbed oil increased with increasing contact time. The fastest adsorption was observed during the first 30 min of treatment. The adsorption kinetics for emulsified oils onto sorbent followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. An optimal medical scaffold should be biocompatible and biodegradable and should have adequate mechanical properties and scaffold architecture porosity, a precise three-dimensional shape, and a reasonable manufacturing method. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a natural biodegradable thermoplastic aliphatic polyester that can be fabricated into nanofiber structures through many techniques, and electrospinning is one of the most widely used methods. Medical fiber mat scaffolds have been associated with inflammation and infection and, in some cases, have resulted in tissue degradation. Therefore, surface modification with antimicrobial agents represents a suitable solution if the mechanical properties of the fiber mats are not affected. In this study, the surfaces of electrospun PLA fiber mats were modified with naturally occurring l -ascorbic acid (ASA) or fumaric acid (FA) via a plasma treatment method. It was found that 30 s of radio-frequency (RF) plasma treatment was effective enough for the wettability enhancement and hydroperoxide formation needed for subsequent grafting reactions with antimicrobial agents upon their decomposition. This modification led to changes in the surface properties of the PLA fiber mats, which were analyzed by various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. FTIR-ATR confirmed the chemical composition changes after the modification process and the surface morphology/topography changes were proven by SEM and AFM. Moreover, nanomechanical changes of prepared PLA fiber mats were investigated by AFM using amplitude modulation-frequency modulation (AM-FM) technique. The effect of accelerated weathering on poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and PHBV-based nanocomposites with rutile titanium (IV) dioxide (PHBV/TiO2) was investigated. The accelerated weathering test applied consecutive steps of UV irradiation (at 340 nm and 0.76 W m−2 irradiance) and moisture at 50 °C following the ASTM D4329 standard for up to 2000 h of exposure time. The morphology, chemical structure, crystallization, as well as the mechanical and thermal properties were studied. Samples were characterized after 500, 1000, and 2000 h of exposure time. Different degradation mechanisms were proposed to occur during the weathering exposure and were confirmed based on the experimental data. The PHBV surface revealed cracks and increasing roughness with the increasing exposure time, whereas the PHBV/TiO2 nanocomposites showed surface changes only after 2000 h of accelerated weathering. The degradation of neat PHBV under moisture and UV exposure occurred preferentially in the amorphous phase. In contrast, the presence of TiO2 in the nanocomposites retarded this process, but the degradation would occur simultaneously in both the amorphous and crystalline segments of the polymer after long exposure times. The thermal stability, as well as the temperature and rate of crystallization, decreased in the absence of TiO2. TiO2 not only provided UV protection, but also restricted the physical mobility of the polymer chains, acting as a nucleating agent during the crystallization process. It also slowed down the decrease in mechanical properties. The mechanical properties were shown to gradually decrease for the PHBV/TiO2 nanocomposites, whereas a sharp drop was observed for the neat PHBV after an accelerated weathering exposure. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), using the amplitude modulation–frequency modulation (AM–FM) tool, also confirmed the mechanical changes in the surface area of the PHBV and PHBV/TiO2 samples after accelerated weathering exposure. The morphology, chemical structure, molecular weight, crystallization, as well as mechanical and thermal properties were thoroughly studied. Samples were characterized after 500 h, 1000 h and 2000 h exposure. Different degradation mechanisms were proposed to happen during the weathering exposure and confirmed based on the experimental data. The PLA and PLA/TiO2 surfaces presented holes and increasing roughness over the exposure time. The molecular weight of the weathered samples decreased due to chain scission during the degradation processes. Thermal stability decreased in the presence of TiO2 and a double melting peak was observed for the PLA/TiO2 nanocomposite. A general improvement in the mechanical properties of the PLA/TiO2 nanocomposite was observed over time during the accelerated weathering analysis up to 1000 h of exposure time. After 2000 h of weathering exposure, the PLA and PLA/TiO2 became extremely brittle and lost their ductile properties. This was ascribed to a significant increase in the degree of crystallinity upon weathering, which was accelerated in the presence of TiO2. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) using amplitude modulation–frequency modulation (AM–FM) tool confirmed the mechanical changes in the surface area of the PLA samples after accelerated weathering exposure. The stiffness and Young's modulus achieved higher values than the unweathered ones up to 1000 h of exposure time. In this work, laboratory prepared PANI and it's composite with carbon nanotubes (PANI/CNTs) were used for the fabrication of micropatterns on flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate using the drop cast method and plasma technology. Plasma technology was employed as an adhesion promoter between the PET substrate and PANI layers, as was confirmed by the peel tests. The PANI and PANI-CNTs deposited layers on PET were thoroughly characterized in terms of the surface, as well as the structural morphology, by various microscopic and scanning probe techniques. Moreover, the electrical conductivity of the deposited layers was confirmed by broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) and conductive atomic force microscopy (ORCA-AFM). The presence of CNTs in the PANI/CNTs composite was responsible for the more uniform and compact deposited layers and better electrical conductivity. This study deals with removing crude oil droplets from colloidal oil in water emulsions. The target was the development of efficient adsorbents for the tertiary treatment of industrial-produced water (PW). The novel adsorbent was designed from recycled low-density polyethylene (LDPE) powder grafted by the cationic polymer. The cationic polymer was synthesized directly on the LDPE surface by plasma-induced radical polymerization. A positively charged adsorbent was chosen due to the negative character of oily droplets to enhance separation efficiency in treating oil-water emulsions. The separation was performed in both batch and filtration modes. Absorption/adsorption uptake capacities showed a sigmoidal S-shape that was analyzed using the Sips model and compared with the newly developed empirical model. Both models showed a remarkable coincidence in the description of experimental data. The separation efficiency of the novel adsorbent was also tested in a filtration mode mimicking a commonly used deep-bed filtration technology. The comparison of the separation efficiency for various sorbents indicated a supreme performance of novel adsorbent. This study demonstrates the potential of a relatively cheap, prepared commodity-based adsorbent for the purification of emulsified oily polluted water in both batch and filtration configurations. This study also contributes to the recycling of polyethylene waste because LDPE attracts meager interest in recycled LLDPE due to many obstacles to reusing LDPE waste for its reprocessing as packaging materials. In this article, we report the preparation and properties of electro‐conductive mats based on the commercial copolyamide (Vestamelt X1010) and multiwall carbon nanotubes functionalized by amino groups. Vestamelt X1010 is easily soluble in n‐propanol at room temperature up to a concentration of 18 wt%. This is a significant advantage of this system because n‐propanol is considered to be a safe and relatively environmentally friendly solvent compared with the organic solvents and acids frequently used for electrospinning of common synthetic polymers. The co‐polyamide nanofibers were modified by multiwall carbon nanotubes grafted by amino groups to enhance their electrical conductivity at low filler content. The percolation threshold was found to be 0.33 vol%. Some applications of these mats were demonstrated such as the capability for sensing a selected vapor (acetone) and for oil/water separation. It was shown that neat Vestamelt X1010 mats remove around 85 wt% of oil (100 ppm of vegetable oil dispersed in water), whereas the addition of 1 wt% of CNTs enhances this ability up to 95 wt%. POLYM. Abstract The ability of polarized pulsed laser in surface modification of substrate surfaces without thermally destroying them is a well-established concept of scientific procedure. In this work, we report the laser induced surface structures that are created on the semi crystalline polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer and its composites containing transition metal oxides-zinc oxide of 100 nm and iron oxide of 30 nm diameter. The PVDF nanocomposites are fabricated by solution casting method and films of 0.2 mm thickness are used for laser treatment. The periodic structures formed are demonstrated by atomic force microscopy and profilometry investigations. Influence of laser pulses on the material properties is also addressed by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, contact angle measurements and thermogravimetric/differential scanning calorimetric studies. In this paper, we present the preparation and properties of a unique material system manufactured by electrospinning of co-polyamide 6,12 (coPA) from an n-propanol solution. A significant advantage of this system is that n-propanol is considered a safe organic solvent. According to the literature, no polymers have been electrospun from this solvent until now. The co-polyamide nanofibers were modified using cellulose nanocrystals, which were prepared by a simple one-step method from date palm leaves. This was done to enhance their mechanical properties and increase their hydrophilicity. The addition of 1 wt% of cellulose nanocrystals improved the Young's modulus by 224% and the tensile strength of the composites by 110%. The electrospun coPA fibers showed a significantly higher hydrophobicity than spin-coated foils. The contact angle of water measured on an electrospun mat was 134°, whereas the contact angle measured on a coPA foil was 84°. Selected freestanding coPA electrospun mats were tested for their potential as membranes for vegetable and diesel oil extraction from oil/water mixtures. An interfacial adhesion improvement between low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and aluminum (Al) foil is an important challenge in designing multilayered packaging (TetraPak packaging type) due to insufficient inherent adhesion between both untreated materials. Therefore, extra adhesive layers are often used. The hydrophobic character of LDPE is responsible for poor adhesion to Al and can result in delamination. This study deals with the comparative study of the bulk modification of LDPE with various commercially available adhesive promoters with different chemical compositions to increase LDPE's adhesive characteristics and ensure good adhesion in LDPE/Al laminates. A copolymer of ethylene and methacrylic acid; a terpolymer of ethylene, maleic anhydride, and acrylic ester; or maleated polyethylene (PE) were used as adhesive promoters, and their effect on adhesion improvement of LDPE to Al was investigated. The best adhesion improvement was observed in LDPE-modified samples with maleated PE, while 0.1 wt.% additive content significantly increased peel resistance (from zero to 105 N/m). An additional increase in additive content (0.5 wt.%) in LDPE led to stronger adhesion forces than the cohesion forces in Al foil. Adding 0.5 wt.% of maleated PE into LDPE improved the LDPE/Al laminates' adhesion and can be applied in multilayered lamination applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A simple fabrication method for preparation of surfaces able to switch from superhydrophobic to superhydrophilic state in a reversible and fast way is described. A self-assembled monolayer (SAM) consisting of quaternary ammonium group with aliphatic tail bearing terminal thiol functionality was created on gold nano/microstructured and gold planar surfaces, respectively. A rough nano/microstructured surface was prepared by galvanic reaction on a silicon wafer. The reversible counterion exchange on the rough surface resulted in a switchable contact angle between <5° and 151°. The prewetted rough surface with Cl- as a counterion possesses a superoleophobic underwater character. The kinetics of counterion exchanges suggests a long hydration process and strong electron ion pairing between quaternary ammonium group and perfluorooctanoate counterion. Moreover, a wettability gradient from superhydrophobic to superhydrophilic can be formed on the modified rough gold surface in a robust and simple way by passive incubation of the substrate in a counterion solution and controlled by ionic strength. Hydrophobic fibrous slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) were fabricated by electrospinning polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polystyrene (PS) as a carrier polymer on plasma-treated polyethylene (PE) and polyurethane (PU) substrates. Subsequent infusion of blackseed oil (BSO) into the porous structures was applied for the preparation of the SLIPS. SLIPS with infused lubricants can act as a repellency layer and play an important role in the prevention of biofilm formation. The effect of polymer solutions used in the electrospinning process was investigated to obtain well-defined hydrophobic fibrous structures. The surface properties were analyzed through various optical, macroscopic and spectroscopic techniques. A comprehensive investigation of the surface chemistry, surface morphology/topography, and mechanical properties was carried out on selected samples at optimized conditions. The electrospun fibers prepared using a mixture of PDMS/PS in the ratio of 1:1:10 (g/g/mL) using tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvent showed the best results in terms of fiber uniformity. The subsequent infusion of BSO into the fabricated PDMS/PS fiber mats exhibited slippery behavior regarding water droplets. The fabrication proceeds by sandwiching of μL reaction solution between a Si-wafer modified with ATRP-initiator and a glass slide under atmospheric and ambient conditions. Optimization of reaction conditions was realized on hydrophilic monomer such as 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). Effect of various experimental parameters such as light intensity, solvents, ligands, the volume of the reaction solution, size of the Si-wafers, amount of CuBr 2 , and CuBr 2 /ligand ratio in kinetics, linear increase of polymer layer thickness, final thickness and profile of unmodified edges were investigated. The successful fabrication of hydrophilic polymer brushes is confirmed via Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), profilometry and water contact angle. A linear thickness increase with time up to at least 300 nm was achieved, compared to polymethacrylate layers with thickness up to approximately 100 nm previously published by using photoATRP. The general applicability of the optimized conditions for SI-μL-CuPhotoATRP was further proved for two additional hydrophilic monomers, such as glycidyl methacrylate and 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate. Furthermore, sequential homo and block copolymerization demonstrated the living character of fabrication conditions, permitting facile fabrication of well-controlled tetra block homo/copolymer brushes with a pyramid-like pattern on Si-wafer. Foamed phase-change materials (FPCMs) were prepared using recycled linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) blended with 30 wt.% of paraffin wax (PW) and foamed by 1,1′-azobiscarbamide. The protection of pores' collapse during foaming process was insured through chemical cross-linking by organic peroxide prior foaming. This work represents one of very few attempts for a preparation of polymeric phase change foams without a use of micro-encapsulated phase change component leading to the enhancement of the real PCM component (PW) within a final product. The porous structure of fabricated foams was analyzed using micro-computed tomography, and direct observation, and reconstruction of the internal structure was investigated. The porosity of FPCMs was about 85–87 vol.% and resulting thermal conductivity 0.054–0.086 W/m·K. Differential Scanning Calorimetry was used to determine the specific enthalpies of melting (22.4–25.1 J/g) what is the latent heat of materials utilized during a heat absorption. A stability of samples during 10 heating/cooling cycles was demonstrated. The phase change changes were also investigated using the dynamic mechanical analysis from 0° to 65 °C during the 10 cycles, and the mechanical stability of the system and phase-change transition were clearly confirmed, as proved by DSC. Leaching test revealed a long-term release of PW (around 7% of its original content) from samples which were long term stored at temperatures over PW melting point. This is the usual problem concerning polymer/wax blends. The most common, industrially feasible solution is a lamination of products, for instance by aluminum foils. Finally, the measurement of the heat flow simulating the real conditions shows that samples containing PW decrease the energy passing through the sample from 68.56 to 34.88 kJ·m−2. In this respect, FPCMs provide very effective double functionality, firstly common thermal insulators, and second, as the heat absorbers acting through melting of the PW and absorbing the excessive thermal energy during melting. This paper introduces the fabrication of multi-featured nanofibers membranes using wet-electrospinning process. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers were wet-electrospun onto poly (3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) coagulation bath to generate hybrid structure of piezoelectric multifunctional sensor. Therefore, the fabricated wet-electrospun nanofibers membrane shows piezo sensitivity up to 0.9 V/N and piezo coefficient (d 33) of 27.2 pC/N. In addition, our fabricated membrane shows a variable surface roughness response up to 120 p.m. at an applied DC voltage of 10 V, as an opposite piezoelectric transducing mechanism. Also, our formed nanocomposite showed a strain sensing capability with conductivity variation of 0.01833 S/m per each 1% elongation strain. Furthermore, we have detected the effect of cyclic stretching strains over 100 times on the performance of both piezo response and strain sensing of our developed wetspun nanofibers. Purpose: Copolyamide 6,10 (coPA) electrospun mats were covered with multilayered (ML) and single-layered (SL) MXene (Ti3C2Tx) as a membrane for the separation of water/vegetable oil emulsions. Methods: Prepared membranes were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), profilometry, the contact angle measurements of various liquids in air, and the underwater contact angle of vegetable oil. The separation efficiency was evaluated by measuring the UV transmittance of stock solutions compared to the UV transmittance of the filtrate. Results: The MXene coating onto coPA mats led to changes in the permeability, hydrophilicity, and roughness of the membranes and enhanced the separation efficiency of the water/vegetable oil emulsions containing 10, 100, and 1000 ppm of sunflower vegetable oil. It was found that membranes were highly oleophobic (>124°) under water, unlike in air, where the membranes showed high oleophobicity (<5°). The separation efficiency of water/oil emulsions for both types of covered membranes reached over 99%, with a surface coverage of 3.2 mg/cm2 Ti3C2Tx (for ML-Ti3C2Tx) and 2.9 mg/cm2 (for SL-Ti3C2Tx). Conclusions: The separation efficiency was greater than 98% for membranes covered with 2.65 mg/cm2 of ML-Ti3C2Tx, whereas the separation efficiency for membranes containing 1.89 and 0.77 mg/cm2 was less than 90% for all studied emulsion concentrations. In this study, effects of two different types of porous alumina nanoparticles have been incorporated into high-density polyethylene (HDPE) to study their impact on the properties of the HDPE composite. The dispersion of fillers in the HDPE matrix was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) integrated with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were applied to investigate the calorimetric behavior and thermal stability and to analyze the polymer decomposition, respectively. The dielectric properties were determined by a broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The effect of filler loading on the tensile properties and melt flow index was also examined. A homogenous distribution of the fillers was observed at low loading of alumina particles (below 5 wt. %). However, agglomerates of sub-micro size were formed extensively on samples with high loading of fillers (above 7 wt. %). A significant improvement of the thermo-oxidation stability of the composite was observed. The permittivity values of the prepared composites also increased with the addition of the fillers. The electrically conductive, transparent, and flexible self-standing thin nanocomposite films based on copolyamide matrix (coPA:Vestamelt X1010) modified with 2D Ti3C2Tx (MXene) nanosheets were prepared by casting and their electrical, mechanical and optical properties and then, were investigated. The percolation threshold of the MXene filler within the coPA matrix was found to be 0.05 vol. %, and the highest determined electrical conductivity was 1.4 × 10−2 S·cm−1 for the composite filled with 5 wt. % (1.8 vol. %) of MXene. The electrical conductivity of the as-prepared MXene was 9.1 S·cm−1, and the electrical conductivity of the MAX phase (the precursor for MXene preparation) was 172 S·cm−1. The transparency of the prepared composite films exceeded 75%, even for samples containing 5 wt. % of MXene, as confirmed by UV spectroscopy. The dynamic mechanical analysis confirmed the improved mechanical properties, such as the storage modulus, which improved with the increasing MXene content. Moreover, all the composite films were very flexible and did not break under repeated twisting. The combination of the relatively high electrical conductivity of the composites filled with low filler content, an appropriate transparency, and good mechanical properties make these materials promising for applications in flexible electronics. An investigation was made of wood of the species oak (Quercus petraea), beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) and ash (Fraxinus excelsior) pre-treated using radio-frequency (RF) plasma in air at reduced pressure. Physical and chemical changes for all of the wood species were determined using measurements of water contact angles and FTIR-ATR spectroscopy. The results confirmed an increase in the wood’s hydrophilicity/polarity in all cases, caused by an increase in –OH group concentration due to irradiation by RF plasma. The content of oxygen-containing functional groups after treatment by RF plasma significantly increased, and the water contact angles were diminished. FTIR-ATR spectroscopy confirmed that RF plasma modification of the surfaces of all investigated wood samples led to certain changes, which were also dependent on the time of plasma exposure. This work presents electrospun nanofibers from synthetic spider silk protein, and their application as both a mechanical vibration and humidity sensor. Spider silk solution was synthesized from minor ampullate silk protein (MaSp) and then electrospun into nanofibers with a mean diameter of less than 100 nm. Then, mechanical vibrations were detected through piezoelectric characteristics analysis using a piezo force microscope and a dynamic mechanical analyzer with a voltage probe. The piezoelectric coefficient (d33) was determined to be 3.62 pC/N. During humidity sensing, both mechanical and electric resistance properties of spider silk nanofibers were evaluated at varying high-level humidity, beyond a relative humidity of 70%. The mechanical characterizations of the nanofibers show promising results, with Young's modulus and maximum strain of up to 4.32 MPa and 40.90%, respectively. One more interesting feature is the electric resistivity of the spider silk nanofibers, which were observed to be decaying with humidity over time, showing a cyclic effect in both the absence and presence of humidity due to the cyclic shrinkage/expansion of the protein chains. Reverse osmosis (RO) is an efficient water purification technique because of its high selectivity and permeability. During RO operation, rejection of solutes at the membrane surface leads to generation of a concentration gradient of the impermeable solute on the membrane surface, referred to as concentration polarization (CP). CP is a challenge as it reduces the driving force for transport and leads to a lower overall solute rejection. Compared to membrane fouling, which is a gradual process, CP is more challenging to monitor because it forms from the inception of filtration and decreases rapidly when filtration stops. Concentration profile monitoring devices are generally not available within a high-pressure crossflow framework. However, recent developments have integrated detection devices into filtration cells to allow for CP visualization. Measurements of concentration gradients enable development of active methods to alleviate or even eliminate CP during filtration. Active membranes aim to eliminate CP by increasing turbulence. This review illustrates the development of CP visualization tools that have been applied to or have the potential to be applied in RO. It also includes a discussion of innovative active membranes for CP reduction that could be key to adoption of next-generation ultra-permeable RO membranes. In this paper, diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharge plasma at atmospheric pressure has been used for surface modification of polyester/cotton (PESc) fabric, which was subsequently modified by sol–gel process using suitable organofunctional silanes to enhance its hydrophobicity. Modified PESc fabric surfaces were conditioned during the gelling process to obtain the permanent hydrophobicity. The contact angle of water before washing of plasma and sol–gel pretreated PESc fabric was found to be 154° and 151° after standardized washings. Novel 2D Ti3C2Tx (MXene)-reinforced polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers have been successfully fabricated by an electrospinning technique. The high aspect ratio, hydrophilic surfaces, and metallic conductivity of delaminated MXene nanosheet render it promising nanofiller for high performance nanocomposites. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were used to improve the mechanical properties of the nanofibers. The obtained electrospun nanofibers had diameter from 174 to 194 nm depending on ratio between PVA, CNC and MXene. Dynamic mechanical analysis demonstrated an increase in the elastic modulus from 392 MPa for neat PVA fibers to 855 MPa for fibers containing CNC and MXene at 25°C. Moreover, PVA nanofibers containing 0.14 wt. % Ti3C2Tx exhibited dc conductivity of 0.8 mS/cm conductivity which is superior compared to similar composites prepared using methods other than electrospinning. This study focuses on preparing porous, hydrophobic, and oleophilic hydrocarbon-based foams applicable for removing free oils from water surfaces. Paraffinic waste material generated during industrial production of low-density polyethylene (Qatar Petrochemical Company) was used for the preparation of foamy, elastic structures through crosslinking of short aliphatic chains by dicumyl peroxide and foaming by 1,1′-azobiscarbamide. The porosity of the foam determined by computer microtomography was 58.9%, and the bulk density was 0.42 g.cm −3. The sorption ability of the foam was tested using diesel oil, motor oil, and heavy crude oil. The absorption capacity of foam was characterized as the ratio between the mass of oil absorbed by the foam and the mass of a neat foam (S w) and as the ratio between the volume of oil absorbed by the foam and the volume of a neat foam (S v). The absorption capacities of the new foam reported in this study (referred to here as Qwax foam) are 6.6 ± 0.3 g/g, or 3.3 ± 0.2 cm3/cm3 for diesel oil, 3.9 ± 0.4 g/g or 1.9 ± 0.3 cm3/cm3 for motor oil, and 3.4 ± 0.2 g/g or 1.4 ± 0.4 cm3/cm3 for crude oil. To compare the sorption ability of Qwax foam with some standard foams, the absorption capacities of highly porous commercial polyurethane (PU) and melamine (MA) foams were investigated under the same conditions. To this end, we have developed a novel, simple and facile route to introduce commercially available material with tuned surface and interface chemistry for their potential applications in fuel cells (FCs) science and technology. Commercial tungsten carbide (WC) was activated by means of electrochemical oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) on different rotation rates to induce mild interactions of oxygen molecules with surface of WC at specified reduction potentials. The X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis before and after the activation confirmed the tuning of WC surface with incorporation of potential factors to activate them for enhanced electrocatalytic activities. In addition, the electrocatalytic methanol oxidation reactions (MOR) and hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) were carried and confirmed the exceptional boosted-up electrocatalytic behaviour of WC after the activation. The enhancement in electrocatalytic mechanism after activation was also tested and proved by means of in-situ FTIR spectroelectrochemical analysis for methanol electro-oxidation. In addition, the electrochemical depositions of Pt nanoparticles were carried out on WC surface before and after the activation to reveal the influence of surface activation for accommodating the foreign particles as support material in electrocatalysis. The results shown two fold enhancement in anodic performance of Pt-modified activated WC catalyst for methanol oxidation reactions and hydrogen evolution reactions in fuel cells. A barrier plasma, created at atmospheric pressure, was used to improve the surface and adhesive properties of polyester (PES) film with respect to wood using polyurethane adhesives. The modification of PES film surfaces using barrier discharge plasma is attractive for various applications. Plasma pre-treatment initiates and participates in grafting, polymerization, or cross-linking reactions on the PES surface. This method of surface modification is clean, dry, ecological, and very efficient. The enhancement of the wettability of the polyester film was necessary for promoting higher adhesion to wood with water-based adhesives. The treatment of polyester films by barrier plasma led to a considerable increase in the surface free energy of the film and subsequently an increase in the peel strength of the adhesive joint of PES film-oak wood with polyurethane adhesive. Plant-based materials have found their application in the packaging with a yearly growing production rate. These naturally biodegradable polymers are obtained from renewable and sustainable natural resources with reduced environmental impact and affordable cost. These materials have found their utilization in fully-renewable plant-based packaging products, such as Tetra Pak®-like containers, by replacing commonly-used polyethylene as the polymer component. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is one of the representative plant-based polymers because of its eco-friendliness and excellent chemical and mechanical properties. In this work, a PLA surface was modified by various food additives, namely ascorbic acid (ASA) and fumaric acid (FA), using plasma-initiated grafting reactions in order to improve the surface and adhesion properties of PLA. Various analytical and microscopic techniques were employed to prove the grafting process. Moreover, the improved adhesion of the modified PLA foil to aluminum (Al) foil in a laminate configuration was proven by peel resistance measurements. Medical-grade polyvinyl chloride was coated by polysaccharides through a novel physicochemical approach. An initial surface activation was performed foremost via diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharge plasma in air at ambient temperature and pressure. Then, radical graft copolymerization of acrylic acid through grafting-from pathway was directed to render a well-defined brush of high density, and finally a chitosan monolayer and chitosan/pectin alternating multilayer were bound onto the functionalized surfaces. Surface characteristics were systematically investigated using several probe techniques. In vitro bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation assays indicated that a single chitosan layer was incapable of hindering the adhesion of a Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strain, while up to 30% reduction was achieved by the chitosan/pectin layered assembly. On the other hand, chitosan and chitosan/pectin multilayer could retard Escherichia coli adhesion by 50% and 20%, respectively. The low-density polyethylene/aluminum (LDPE/Al) joint in Tetra Pak provides stability and strength to food packaging, ensures protection against outside moisture, and maintains the nutritional values and flavors of food without the need for additives in the food products. However, a poor adhesion of LDPE to Al, due to its non-polar surface, is a limiting factor and extra polymeric interlayers or surface treatment is required. Plasma-assisted grafting of the LDPE surface with different molecular weight compounds of polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used to improve LDPE/Al adhesion. It was found that this surface modification contributed to significantly improve the wettability of the LDPE surface, as was confirmed by contact angle measurements. The chemical composition changes after plasma treatment and modification process were observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). A surface morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Adhesion characteristics of LDPE/Al adhesive joints were analyzed by the peel tests. The most significant adhesion improvement of the PEG modified LDPE surface was achieved using 10.0 wt.% aqueous (6000 M) PEG solution, while the peel resistance increased by approximately 54 times in comparison with untreated LDPE. Many polymer materials have found a wide variety of applications in biomedical industries due to their excellent mechanical properties. However, the infections associated with the biofilm formation represent serious problems resulting from the initial bacterial attachment on the polymeric surface. The development of novel slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) represents promising method for the biofilm formation prevention. These surfaces are characterized by specific microstructural roughness able to hold lubricants inside. The lubricants create a slippery layer for the repellence of various liquids, such as water and blood. In this study, effective antimicrobial modifications of polyethylene (PE) and polyurethane (PU), as commonly used medical polymers, were investigated. For this purpose, low-temperature plasma treatment was used initially for activation of the polymeric surface, thereby enhancing surface and adhesion properties. Subsequently, preparation of porous microstructures was achieved by electrospinning technique using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) in combination with polyamide (PA). Finally, natural black seed oil (BSO) infiltrated the produced fiber mats acting as a lubricating layer. The optimized fiber mats' production was achieved using PDMS/PA mixture at ratio 1:1:20 (g/g/mL) using isopropyl alcohol as solvent. The surface properties of produced slippery surfaces were analyzed by various microscopic and optics techniques to obtain information about wettability, sliding behavior and surface morphology/topography. The modified PE and PU substrates demonstrated slippery behavior of an impinged water droplet at a small tilting angle. Moreover, the antimicrobial effects of the produced SLIPs using black seed oil were proven against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli). Composites of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and expanded graphite (EG) are prepared for heat exchangers in multi-effect distillation (MED) desalination. At 50 wt.% EG loading, the thermal conductivity of HDPE was increased by 372%. Moreover, the surface wettability of the HDPE/EG composite was enhanced by corona and RF plasma treatment as demonstrated by the increase in surface free energy from 28.5 mJ/m2 for untreated HDPE/EG to 55.5 and 54.5 mJ/m2 for HDPE/EG treated by corona and RF plasma, respectively. This enhanced surface wettability was retained over a long time with only a 9% and 18% decrease in RF and corona plasma-treated samples' surface energy after two months. The viscoelastic moduli and the complex viscosity profiles indicated that EG content dictates the optimum processing technique. At loading below 30 wt.%, the extrusion process is preferred, while above 30 wt.% loading, injection molding is preferred. The plasma treatment also improved the HDPE/EG composite overall heat transfer coefficient with an overall heat transfer coefficient of the composite reaching about 98% that of stainless steel. Moreover, the plasma-treated composite exhibited superior resistance to crystallization fouling in both CaSO4 solution and artificial seawater compared to untreated composites and stainless-steel surfaces. The use of polymers in all aspects of daily life is increasing considerably, so there is high demand for polymers with specific properties. Polymers with antibacterial properties are highly needed in the food and medical industries. Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is widely used in various industries, especially in food packaging, because it has suitable mechanical and safety properties. Nevertheless, the hydrophobicity of its surface makes it vulnerable to microbial attack and culturing. To enhance antimicrobial activity, a progressive surface modification of LDPE using the antimicrobial agent grafting process was applied. LDPE was first exposed to nonthermal radio-frequency (RF) plasma treatment to activate its surface. This led to the creation of reactive species on the LDPE surface, resulting in the ability to graft antibacterial agents, such as ascorbic acid (ASA), commonly known as vitamin C. ASA is a well-known antioxidant that is used as a food preservative, is essential to biological systems, and is found to be reactive against a number of microorganisms and bacteria. The antimicrobial effect of grafted LDPE with ASA was tested against two strong kinds of bacteria, namely, Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), with positive results. Surface analyses were performed thoroughly using contact angle measurements and peel tests to measure the wettability or surface free energy and adhesion properties after each modification step. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to analyze the surface morphology or topography changes of LDPE caused by plasma treatment and ASA grafting. Surface chemistry was studied by measuring the functional groups and elements introduced to the surface after plasma treatment and ASA grafting, using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). These results showed wettability, adhesion, and roughness changes in the LDPE surface after plasma treatment, as well as after ASA grafting. This is a positive indicator of the ability of ASA to be grafted onto polymeric materials using plasma pretreatment, resulting in enhanced antibacterial activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Poly (vinylidene fluoride) nanofibers (PVDF NFs) have been extensively used in energy harvesting applications due to their promising piezoresponse characteristics. However, the mechanical properties of the generated fibers are still lacking. Therefore, we are presenting in this work a promising improvement in the elasticity properties of PVDF nanofibrous membrane through thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) additives. Morphological, physical, and mechanical analyses were performed for membranes developed from different blend ratios. Then, the impact of added weight ratio of TPU on the piezoelectric response of the formed nanofibrous composite membranes was studied. The piezoelectric characteristics were studied through impulse loading testing where the electric voltage had been detected under applied mass weights. Piezoelectric characteristics were investigated further through a pressure mode test the developed nanofibrous composite membranes were found to be mechanically deformed under applied electric potential. This work introduces promising high elastic piezoelectric materials that can be used in a wide variety of applications including energy harvesting, wearable electronics, self-cleaning filters, and motion/vibration sensors.
