1. Umbilical Cord Prolapse through Urethra Due to Complicated Uterine Rupture

Abstract

Uterine rupture is a rare but potentially fatal complication of pregnancy with life-threatening maternal and fetal consequences. We present a case of umbilical cord prolapsed through urethra due to complicated uterine rupture in a patient with severe pre- eclampsia. A multiparous woman in her 30s, with history of untreated preeclampsia during this pregnancy and two previous Cesarean sections presented with spontaneous leakage of amniotic fluid in a full-term unmonitored pregnancy and occipital headache. The general physical examination showed high blood pressure values, and fetal demise was diagnosed using abdominal ultrasound. During the preparation for Cesarean section the patient developed complicated uterine rupture with urinary bladder lesion resulting in umbilical cord prolapse through the urethra. An emergency laparotomy and supravaginal hysterectomy were performed due to impossibility to repair the uterine wall. The fact that uterine rupture is a life-threatening obstetric emergency and that it is associated with high maternal and perinatal mortality indicates the necessity to consider the risk of rupture and to follow-up on the patient to prevent complications.

Consequently, anti-TNFα medications result in an increased risk of latent TB infection (LTBI) reactivation. Here, we sought to evaluate the factors affecting the results of QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT) assay as a screening tool for LTBI. Methods: We conducted an observational, retrospective study in patients with IBD and RA who underwent LTBI screening using QFT-GIT at UMass Memorial Medical Center between 2008 and 2016 prior to initiation of anti-TNF medications. Results: We included 107 and 89 patients with IBD and RA, respectively. We found that a higher proportion of IBD patients had indeterminate QFT-GIT result compared to RA patients. Furthermore, we found that the majority of patients with indeterminate results were tested during an acute flare of IBD (88%) and while taking corticosteroids. Abstract

Cirrhosis describes the development of excess fibrous tissue around regenerative nodules in response to chronic liver injury and usually leads to irreversible organ damage and end-stage liver disease. During the development of cirrhosis, the formation of collagenous scar tissue is paralleled by a reorganization and remodeling of the hepatic vascular system. To date, macrovascular remodeling in various cirrhosis models has been examined using three-dimensional (3D) imaging modalities, while microvascular changes have been studied mainly by two-dimensional (2D) light microscopic and electron microscopic imaging. Here, we report on the application of high-resolution 3D synchrotron radiation-based microtomography (SRmCT) for the study of the sinusoidal and capillary blood vessel system in three murine models of advanced parenchymal and biliary hepatic fibrosis. SRmCT facilitates the characterization of microvascular architecture and identifies features of intussusceptive angiogenesis in progressive liver fibrosis in a non-destructive 3D manner.

Test methods, carried out in accordance with international standards, investigated the possibility of using heat-insulating waterdispersion paint coatings as a protective and decorative finish of plastered building facades., У статті визначається будівельно-фізичні властивості теплоізоляційних водно-дисперсійних лакофарбових покриттів. Критерієм оцінки, згідно теорії фасадного захисту Кюнцеля було обрано паропроникність та дифузна здатність по відношенню до водяної пари. Методами випробувань, виконаними згідно з міжнародними стандартами, досліджено можливість використання теплоізоляційних водно-дисперсійних лакофарбових покриттів в якості декоративно-захисної обробки оштукатурених фасадів будівель.

Abstract

Nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) is a eukaryotic mRNA surveillance system that selectively degrades transcripts with premature termination codons (PTC). Many RNA-binding proteins (RBP) regulate their expression levels by a negative feedback loop, in which RBP binds its own pre-mRNA and causes alternative splicing to introduce a PTC. We present a bioinformatic framework to identify novel such autoregulatory feedback loops by combining eCLIP assays for a large panel of RBPs with the data on shRNA inactivation of NMD pathway, and shRNA-depletion of RBPs followed by RNA-seq. We show that RBPs frequently bind their own pre-mRNAs and respond prominently to NMD pathway disruption. Poison and essential exons, i.e., exons that trigger NMD when included in the mRNA or skipped, respectively, respond oppositely to the inactivation of NMD pathway and to the depletion of their host genes, which allows identification of novel autoregulatory mechanisms for a number of human RBPs. For example, SRSF7 binds its own pre-mRNA and facilitates the inclusion of two poison exons; SFPQ binding promotes switching to an alternative distal 3’-UTR that is targeted by NMD; RPS3 activates a poison 5’-splice site in its pre-mRNA that leads to a frame shift; U2AF1 binding activates one of its two mutually exclusive exons, leading to NMD; TBRG4 is regulated by cluster splicing of its two essential exons. Our results indicate that autoregulatory negative feedback loop of alternative splicing and NMD is a generic form of post-transcriptional control of gene expression.

Abstract

Spontaneous fissions of the 252No and 254No nobelium isotopes have been studied in a series of experiments with the SHELS separator. These isotopes are produced by colliding a beam of 48Ca ions from the U-400 cyclotron with the 206Pb and 208Pb targets. The measured characteristics of the 252No and 254No spontaneous fissions include their half-lives, total kinetic energies of fission fragments, and prompt-neutron multiplicities. The average number of neutrons per 254No spontaneous-fission act is measured for the first time as 4.88 ± 0.53. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
