This paper presents a physiological, hematological, and biochemical study of the impact of different rearing conditions on pheasant production outcomes and mortality rates in both the pheasant parent flock and pheasant chicks up to 6 weeks old. Pheasant breeding holds significance within hunting activities and meat production for the food market due to its high biological and nutritive value. Pheasant meat contains high-quality proteins, minerals, essential unsaturated fatty acids, and boasts a low-fat percentage. The quality of pheasant meat derived from natural habitats holds a higher biological value compared to that of pheasants raised on farms, featuring higher water, protein, and calcium contents, and a lower fat percentage. The dry mass of breast muscles from farm-reared birds contains more protein and less fat when compared to drumstick muscles. Notably, during the egg-laying period, alterations in hematological parameters linked to oxygen transport, decreased erythropoiesis, and increased values in white blood cell parameters were observed. Changes in blood biochemical parameters signify increased energy requirements in pheasant hens during egg laying, as well as heightened transportation of minerals, proteins, and cholesterol, which accumulate in the eggshell, albumen, and yolk. The elevated metabolic requirements in pheasant hens manifest significantly through increased levels of cholesterol, uric acid, lactates, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), calcium, and phosphorus. Simultaneously, there is a noteworthy decrease in plasma total proteins, albumins, glucose, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) concentrations. Several challenges persist throughout all production stages, leading to reduced egg yield, compromised egg quality and fertility, as well as increased mortality rates. These issues stem from factors such as high population density, an inappropriate male-to-female sex ratio, inadequate nutrition, and insufficient assessment of the biological quality of hatching eggs.

The aim of the study was to examine the influence of the rearing system and age on the phenotypic correlation of the physical properties of the eggs of the Banat naked neck layers. In both examined systems (extensive and semi-intensive system) there were 50 Banat naked neck layers each. The egg properties were examined at three evenly distributed time intervals (40, 45 and 50 weeks of age) in the period from May to July. In order to determine the external properties of egg quality, three basic measures were observed: egg weight, egg length and egg width. Based on the measured length and width of the eggs, the egg shape index was calculated, and subsequently the volume and surface area of the eggs were determined. For each examined factor, the correlation between the mentioned characteristics was determined. The obtained results showed a significant effect of the rearing system on all examined egg properties (R < 0.05), while the influence of age as well as the interaction of the two examined factors had no significant effect. The highest correlation among all investigated factors was found between surface area and egg volume.

Lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) are heavy metals considered possible contaminants of water, soil and air (especially when occurring as a consequence of human activities in agriculture or industry), and can be found in the liver or kidneys of animals, thus serving as indicators of pollution. Vojvodina is a northern province of the Republic of Serbia which boasts very intensive agricultural production, especially crop production. The brown hare is well-adapted and abundant in Vojvodina. As a complete herbivore, it has the potential to be a good biomonitor for the presence of lead and cadmium in the chosen biotope. A total of 60 samples of hare livers were collected and analyzed immediately after hunting. The average concentration of lead in all the liver samples analyzed was 851.43 µg/kg of wet tissue. The lead concentrations determined at three different sites in Vojvodina (namely Odžaci in Bačka, Rusko selo in Banat and Kraljevci in Srem) were not statistically significant. However, the average lead concentrations at all the sites were above the permitted level (500 µg/kg of wet tissue). The maximum amount of lead determined was 2,302 µg/kg of wet tissue, i.e. almost five times above the permitted level. The cadmium concentrations in all the samples analyzed ranged from 12.90 to 1183.00 µg/kg of wet tissue. The average cadmium concentrations determined at three different sites were found statistically significant, suggesting a local source of contamination. The average cadmium concentrations at sites I, II and III were 65.57, 205.91 and 413.99 µg/kg of wet tissue, respectively. The average cadmium concentrations determined at the sites considered were below the permitted level, although exceeding the legal limit in some of the samples analyzed.

The purpose of this study is to examine the status of roe deer population in the hunting grounds of Central Serbia, and perform a SWOT analysis of its management. The data used herein on the number of roe deer individuals and culling events were obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management - Forest Administration and the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia. Moreover, the Law on Game and Hunting was used for analysis purposes. The status of roe deer population in the hunting grounds of Serbia is quite unsatisfactory, depending on the geographical area and wildlife management practices. In 2021, a total of 86,755 individuals were recorded in the area of Central Serbia, which accounts for 97.54% of the optimal population. However, the number of roe deer in the individual hunting grounds of the Central and Eastern hunting areas was above the optimal density, whereas the number of roe deer accounted for 88.58% and 89.12% of the optimal density in the individual hunting grounds of the Southern and Western hunting areas, respectively. The largest number of individuals per unit area (km2) was recorded in the Eastern (2.06) and Belgrade (2.02) hunting areas, whereas the smallest number of individuals per unit area (km2) was recorded in the Southern (1.02) and Western (1.34) hunting areas. The following issues were identified as major impediments to the management of roe deer population in the hunting grounds considered: legislative and regulatory instruments, non-compliance and non-enforcement of a large number of regulations, roe deer monitoring issues, poor hunting ground control, inapplicability of certain regulations in the field of veterinary medicine, environmental protection, unresolved issues of trophy and game meat export, lack of strategic planning (namely the hunting development strategies of the Republic of Serbia), lack of deer habitat monitoring methodology and rating methodology, and unprofessional planning and development of hunting ground management plans. The SWOT analysis performed emphasized the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of roe deer population management in Serbia.

The purpose of this study is to compare the specifics of winter and spring diets of the roe deer using rumen content analysis. A chemical analysis was performed on a total of 13 samples of roe deer rumen contents: 7 samples of winter diet rumen contents and 6 samples of spring diet rumen contents. The following parameters were examined in this study: the level of crude protein and the content of fiber (NDF, ADF and ADL). The results obtained were processed by descriptive statistics and compared using F-tests. Consequently, certain deviations in the quality of roe deer nutrition were found in both winter and spring periods of the year. A lack of protein and energy can pose significant problems to roe deer, especially in the cooler periods of the year. Approximately a total of 17MJ/day is the maximum assumed energy required for animals kept in enclosure. The need for crude protein varies from 30.8% to 34.4% DM. This problem can be tackled if roe deer are adequately fed with quality bulky and concentrated feed, despite the fact that the animals adapt metabolically to seasonal variations.

Aims Pathophysiology and prognostic implications of right ventricle (RV) dysfunction in heart failure are complex and incompletely elucidated. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) is the reference standard for RV quantification, but its clinical implications in non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy (NICM), in the context of myocardial fibrosis and functional mitral regurgitation are not well defined. We evaluated predictors, prognostic impact, and thresholds for defining significant RV dysfunction in NICM. Methods and results NICM patients (n = 624) undergoing CMR assessment during 2002–2017 were retrospectively studied. CMR's quantification of right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) was evaluated against the primary outcome of all-cause mortality, heart transplant, and/or left ventricular assist device implantation in threshold and multivariable analyses. Mean RVEF was 43 ± 13%, and factors associated with reduced RVEF were male sex, New York Heart Association (NYHA) class III-IV, right bundle branch block, lower left ventricular ejection fraction, higher mitral regurgitant fraction (MR-RF) and right ventricle size in NICM. RVEF per 5% increase was independently associated with the primary endpoint hazards ratio (95% confidence interval) 0.80 (0.73–0.88), P < 0.001. RVEF ≤40% was the optimal threshold associated with worse prognosis, regardless of late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) or MR-RF quantification. On the other hand, higher LGE was associated with primary endpoint in patients with RVEF ≤ 40% only, while risk associated with MR-RF was significant dampened after adjusting for RVEF. Conclusion RVEF provides powerful risk stratification, with RVEF ≤ 40% defining significant RV dysfunction associated with adverse outcomes in NICM. The integration of quantitative CMR measurements for RVEF, LGE, and MR-RF provides comprehensive NICM risk prognostication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Every two years groups worldwide participate in the Critical Assessment of Protein Structure Prediction (CASP) experiment to blindly test the strengths and weaknesses of their computational methods. CASP has significantly advanced the field but many hurdles still remain, which may require new ideas and collaborations. In 2012 a web-based effort called WeFold, was initiated to promote collaboration within the CASP community and attract researchers from other fields to contribute new ideas to CASP. Members of the WeFold coopetition (cooperation and competition) participated in CASP as individual teams, but also shared components of their methods to create hybrid pipelines and actively contributed to this effort. We assert that the scale and diversity of integrative prediction pipelines could not have been achieved by any individual lab or even by any collaboration among a few partners. The models contributed by the participating groups and generated by the pipelines are publicly available at the WeFold website providing a wealth of data that remains to be tapped. Here, we analyze the results of the 2014 and 2016 pipelines showing improvements according to the CASP assessment as well as areas that require further adjustments and research.

IntroductionTwo-dimensional strain analysis is a powerful analysis modality, however, clinical utilization has been limited by variability between different analysis systems and operators. We compared strain in adults and children using vendor-specific and vendor-independent software to evaluate variability.MethodsOne hundred and ten subjects (50/110 pediatric, 80/110 normal left ventricular function) had echocardiograms with a General Electric ultrasound scanner between September 2010 and January 2012. Left ventricular longitudinal strain was derived with EchoPAC (General Electric, v10.8.1), a vendor-specific software, and Velocity Vector Imaging (Siemens, v3.5), which is vendor-independent. Three independent readers analyzed all the echocardiograms yielding 330 datasets.ResultsMean left ventricular global longitudinal Lagrangian strain was -18.1 ± SD 4.4% for EchoPAC and -15.3 ± SD 4.1% for Velocity Vector Imaging. Velocity Vector Imaging yielded lower absolute global longitudinal Lagrangian strain by mean 2.9 (±SD 2.7, p 3-5 strain points on repeat measurements. Strain values between the systems are not interchangeable.
