RADIO talk programs ,WORKING class ,RADIO programs ,RADIO (Medium) ,FRANCOISM - Abstract
Through the case study of Manuel Vidal Españó (1905-1984), a Spanish engineer and science popularizer, this paper addresses some features of science popularization in Franco's dictatorship (1939-1975), such as the apolitical and uncritical techno-optimism and the (dis)continuities with the previous political regime. Vidal Españó conducted science radio talks on Radio Barcelona from 1924 until the late 1960s, particularly in his show Los Progresos Científicos (the Scientific Advances), which broke the typical one-way radio communication, establishing a dynamic relationship with his audience. His techno-optimistic and uncritical stance toward science and technology was a strategic approach for navigating the Francoist regime, allowing him to express occasional dissent. In addition to analysing his adaptation to new political conditions, the article explores his connection with the public, illustrating how an effective exchange of knowledge emerged, revealing the working classes' understanding of science and technology during Francoism. DOLLHOUSES , *KOREAN literature , *LITERARY form , *COLONIAL administration , *MELODRAMA ,JAPANESE occupation of Korea, 1910-1945 - Abstract
This article introduces the 1933 novel After the Doll's House by Ch'ae Mansik as an example of how revolutionary messages were presented through melodramatic narratives in colonial Korean proletarian literature. Between 1928 and 1930, several members of the Korea Artista Proleta Federacio (KAPF), most notably Kim Kijin, insisted that melodrama—a narrative form widely distributed in popular newspapers—could circumvent censorship to introduce revolutionary representations to the public. Although few proletarian authors initially agreed with Kim's approach, many proletarian novels, especially those serialized in newspapers such as After the Doll's House, adopted key elements from melodrama. Accordingly, this article explores how modern melodrama in colonial Korea as imported from Japan and Europe was uniquely adapted and transformed to deliver Marxist messages through localized literary symbols and tropes, despite strict censorship under the Government-General of Korea and the commercial demands of the publication market. After the Doll's House thereby evidences how melodramatic narrative in colonial Korean proletarian literature was an effective strategy for expressing radical ideas within the restrictions of colonial rule as well as for creating a hybrid literary form under oppressive social conditions. San Ti (Three Body, better known to English readers as The Three-Body Problem) stands out as the most successful Chinese literary work introduced to international audiences through translation. Previous studies have primarily focused on translating culture-specific terms and fictive terms in the work, arguing that the strategy of foreignization alongside occasional footnotes significantly contributes to its tremendous success. Techno-scientific terms, on the other hand, have received relatively little attention because their rendering seemed to be a straightforward matter of back translation. However, our case study reveals that the source-text-oriented translation strategy for culture-specific terms and fictive terms presents only a partial picture of the science fiction (SF) terminology translation in San Ti. It demonstrates that translating techno-scientific terms needs to be considered alongside culture-specific and fictive terms. Moreover, it provides proof that translating techno-scientific terms cannot be simplified to a process of back translation only. The translator sometimes deviated from the principles of equivalence, resulting in three different types of interlingual terminological shifts, which are discussed and analyzed in the current study. Given the heterogeneity of the target readers and the interesting paradox of San Ti as hard SF, these different types of deviation serve two divergent purposes: popularization and scientization. In addition to explaining the success of San Ti in the English-speaking world, the findings of this case study also provide insights into the unfaithful facets, contextual factors and research scope of terminology translation in this specific genre. 12. Revisiting the Civil Examinations in the Qing Dynasty: Popularization and Social Transitions.

- Abstract
Recent literature has pointed out the increased stratification and narrowing of the social ladder embedded in the Qing-era civil examinations. This essay sees a clear-cut division between the diminishing opportunity for high-level degrees (above juren 舉人) and the rising exam fever in competing for the licentiate degree (shengyuan 生員) at the grassroots level. This study focuses on the popularization of civil exams in the Qing era from three perspectives: the inflation of the licentiate degree, the surging exam population across society, and the unintended by-product of expanded access to widespread education and literacy culture. Thus, this essay argues that the popularization of civil exams had far-reaching impacts on socioeconomic transitions in Qing China. In addition to the "gatekeeper" function of the civil examinations for selecting officials, the Qing exams triggered new occupations for licentiates and helped initiate self-employment orientations that contributed to accommodating the tremendous surplus population. Studying the species diversity and condition of monumental trees contributes to their preservation and is important for public awareness of their role in ecosystems and the country's ecological heritage. The purpose of the study was to reveal the significance of such trees for society. The task of the work was to research the characteristics of monumental trees in Ukraine. The history of environmental protection is analysed and the features of monumental tree preservation in Ukraine are presented. The beginning of environmental protection activity related to the preservation of trees in Ukraine and the most active periods have been revealed of it. The national features of the popularization of monumental trees are given. Based on the analysis of botanical natural monuments cadastres of Ukraine and Kyiv, quantitative and species composition of monumental trees were established. The most common (Quercus robur), common, less common and rare (Buxus sempervirens, Catalpa bignonioides, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Rhododendron myrtifolium, Sequoiadendron giganteum and others) species of monumental trees have been established, and important issues regarding their conservation are indicated. According to the types of street plantings, the majority (68%) are single trees. To assess the awareness of the population about ancient trees, the method of sociological survey of respondents was used. The most significant values of monumental trees for the population were studied. The importance of the populations' awareness of old trees through the development of an emotional connection with them, which contributes to their protection, has been established. The obtained results can be used in future environmental protection activity, exchanging of scientists' experience from different countries regarding the preservation of such trees, enrichment of information about growth characteristics, historical facts or other issues related to these trees [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
By analyzing the Ci-poetry of several representative novelists in the Ming and Qing dynasties, this paper finds that the popularization characteristics of this group of works have two special manifestations: secular subject and slang. The first one is influenced by principles of novel creation, the cultural background of the era, story content and so on. The second one is influenced by the intention of taking Ci-poetry as a play, the casual creative attitude, the habitual use of novel language, the widespread use of the Ming and Qing Ci Pu. The above contents reflect the diversity and particularity of the Ci-poetry writing in Ming and Qing dynasties, the cultural connotation of the secular communication between literati and the mutual influence between the Ming and Qing dynasties, which is conducive to grasping the overall appearance of the Ci-poetry circle in Ming and Qing dynasties. - Abstract
The article deals with the preservation of the tradition of Ukrainian folk scenography of the Poltava region in the pedagogical work of choreographers-directors, the peculiarities of the creative direction of each of the choreographic collectives of the Poltava region, the history of their formation and the form of making talented leaders. The authors highlight the common and distinctive features of the work of these collectives and analyze and compare the specifics of choreographic and vocal-choreographic productions. The article reflects unique figures that revived not only the Poltava regional dance but also the dance culture of Ukraine in general. Performances of Poltava folk ensembles in Estonia, Poland, Germany, France, and other countries near and far abroad, recognition of them and their repertoire on the world stage proves the value of Ukrainian folk scenography. The difference in the teaching of folk scenography in various types of amateur dance groups consists in the extent of formation of choreographic skills and skills of the members of the group (professional level of performance); the availability and number of training classes in various types of choreography (classical, modern, historical and every day, etc.) and auxiliary (acting skills, acrobatics, singing, playing musical instruments, etc.); creative activity in the social life of the university, the city, the country; created in the repertoire of the team, as well as in various pedagogical models of teachers-choreographers. Having analyzed the traditions of Ukrainian folk scenography of the Poltava region in the pedagogical work of choreographers-directors and the current state of the folk-stage choreographic culture of the Poltava region, we can conclude that in the Poltava region, there is a considerable number of collectives, both professional and amateur, which not only preserve the regional choreographic culture but also multiply it. Today, the leading ensembles that demonstrate their skills at the world level are the Honored Amateur Ensemble of Song and Dance «Ltava» named after V. Mishchenko, the dance group of the folk choir «Kalyna», the Song and Dance Ensemble «Poltava», the folk ensemble of Ukrainian dance «Cossack entertainments», choreographic ensemble «Falcons», etc. We consider the prospect of further research to be the creation of practical recommendations for training choreographer teachers to work with folk scenography in out-of-school education institutions; the use of specific methods of preparation of a choreographic work, which take into account the unique features of folk scenography of the Poltava region. John D. McDonald was a writer and editor best known for his work at Fortune magazine in the 1950s and 1960s and as the ghostwriter of the memoirs of Alfred P. Sloan. McDonald was also the first person to popularize game theory. In this article I argue that game theory played a key role in McDonald's transition from documentary writer to business journalist. Game theory gave McDonald a journalistic device to discover business stories and to give those stories a driving tension; he called it a "story engine." After decades writing with game theory, it began to serve a different purpose for McDonald. By coding business stories as games, McDonald gained insight into the characters, corporate executives who were often brief in explanations and shallow in self-understanding. McDonald's career gives us a glimpse at an extraordinary transformation of how a set of scholarly ideas can become a literary resource for vividness (of stories) and depth (of characters). This article is the result of a scientific introspection based on the observation of my studies and my career path, between studies in the environment, planning and urban development, leading to a reflection on geography as a university discipline, at the heart of my profession as a teacher-researcher. The first part presents planning as a discipline that aims to distribute and order the components of a territory, with a view to the future. The second defines urban planning as a practice at the crossroads of engineering, architecture, art and geography’s sister disciplines, economics, sociology and law. A third argues for the importance of transdisciplinarity in favour of a decompartmentalized geography. Finally, the hybridization of science and popularization leads to a conclusion on the evolution of the profession, highlighting the advantages and pitfalls for society.

This article examines the features of the representation of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) memory in a peculiar field – heavy metal music on the example of musical compositions by a national band “Radio Tapok”. The purpose of the study is to identify and describe songs about the Great Patriotic War from the albums of this band as well as to make an attempt to eliminate the shortcomings of previous studies on this issue. The texts of this musical band are dedicated not only to military events, but also to the heroes who took part in combat actions. The author analyses lyrics and musical techniques of the chosen songs and provides comments from listeners from the official YouTube channel of the band creator, which confirm the educational component of the songs with a historical plot. Based on the results the author comes to the conclusion about the effectiveness of such popularization of historical events and images, especially among young people.

On the occasion of the 660th foundation anniversary of the Academy of Krakow, which fell in 2023, the article takes a closer look at a theme that has not been explored in the academic literature, namely the contribution of the staff of Poland's oldest national museum in Krakow to the celebrations marking the 600th anniversary of the academy in 1964 with an exhibition entitled Art in Krakow, 1350-1550. It was a monumental exhibition, which is worth recalling so as not to erase the traces of this initiative. The curator of the exhibition for the 600th foundation anniversary of the Jagiellonian University was Maria Kopff. In organising it, she worked with great dedication and devotion, and it was thanks to this exhibition that she gained great professional and moral authority in the museum community, and on many occasions her opinions influenced the most important museum issues in Poland. It was the exhibition that synchronised monuments of sacred art with monuments of a secular nature in a manner unprecedented in the Polish People's Republic, all in an attempt to show the luxuriant development of Polish art from the 14th to the 16th century. Although the content of the exhibition was close to the so-called 'historical policy', exposing, among other things, the secular character of Cracovian art, it undoubtedly presented the enormous achievements of Polish national heritage. The paper adopts a sociopragmatic approach to the study of emotion processes and investigates discursive traits of the reader’s interest. The field of written popularization was examined to establish how it conceptualizes the reader’s interest through discourse structures. The text materials were obtained experimentally. They consist of 104 pairs of expository text; each of the pairs includes a text published in an academic source and a popular science text created by the participant for provoking the reader’s interest. The comparative methods of empirical discourse analysis are used to identify and describe popularisation strategies. The results show that participants employed four strategies to transform academic texts: reduction N = 94), simplification (N = 81), contextualization (N = 58), and concrete elaboration (N = 17). The strategies tend to present the most significant text ideas, reduce reader’s efforts for processing, and introduce the reader into the discourse-world. The findings suggest that the strategies aim to enhance the optimal relevance and conceptualize reader’s interest through the communicative dimension of relevance.

Abstract There has been a significant reduction in malaria morbidity and mortality worldwide from 2000 to 2019. However, the incidence and mortality increased again in 2020 due to the disruption to services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Surveillance to reduce the burden of malaria, eliminate the disease and prevent its retransmission is, therefore, crucial. The 1-3-7 approach proposed by China has played an important role in eliminating malaria, which has been internationally popularized and adopted in some countries to help eliminate malaria. This review summarizes the experience and lessons of 1-3-7 approach in China and its application in other malaria-endemic countries, so as to provide references for its role in eliminating malaria and preventing retransmission. This approach needs to be tailored and adapted according to the region condition, considering the completion, timeliness and limitation of case-based reactive surveillance and response. It is very important to popularize malaria knowledge, train staff, improve the capacity of health centres and monitor high-risk groups to improve the performance in eliminating settings. After all, remaining vigilance in detecting malaria cases and optimizing surveillance and response systems are critical to achieving and sustaining malaria elimination.

EARLY modern history , *SEVENTEENTH century , *EIGHTEENTH century , *COMMODITY chains , *HISTORIANS - Abstract
If we traveled back in time to the first half of the eighteenth century, we might notice that the cargo aboard an East Indiaman was rather diversified. But of these different products from different countries, a sizable number of them were manufactured in and originated from China. Why was China, alone among many other countries, able to secure its place as a world factory at the time? In this paper, I will suggest that we could not possibly understand how tea and porcelain became synonyms for China without tracing their histories back to the early modern world. We would not be able to deepen our understanding of Anglo-Chinese relations without taking into consideration the flow and circulations of goods between the two powers. My purpose here, therefore, is to outline these very connections throughout the early modern era, roughly from the late seventeenth century to the mid-nineteenth century, based on the fascinating studies conducted by pioneering historians in the field over the past few decades. If we follow the life histories of some of the Chinese commodities, can we determine the ways in which those imported items interacted with the European market in general and the British in particular? Other than treating these commodities as marketable goods, are there any other intellectual perspectives available to help us better comprehend their associations with the early modern world? SOCIAL media , *ELECTRONIC journals , *ALZHEIMER'S disease , *OUTREACH programs , *DIGITAL technology , *JOB involvement - Abstract
Neuroscience is a field of science that sparks curiosity. However, scientific findings often need to be expanded beyond academic areas. As an alternative to bringing evidencebased information to the population, the outreach program POPNEURO has developed a monthly newsletter to disseminate neuroscience-related topics. The "Neuroinfo" newsletter is shared as an electronic magazine and promoted on the program's Instagram social media platform (@programapopneuro). Our objective is to report on the process of constructing and disseminating "Neuroinfo" and highlight the metrics of neuroscience-related topics that have garnered the highest engagement. A total of 23 editions were evaluated, and 11 achieved greater reach, as determined by Instagram insights (which shows the number of views and interactions such as likes, comments, shares, and saves). Overall, the newsletter has gained prominence among the content published on our digital platform and has been well-received by the audience, who have interacted significantly with the dissemination posts. Among the topics covered in the newsletter, those that generated the most interaction among users include "Alzheimer's Disease," "Neurophysiology of Sleep," "The Adolescent Brain," "Study Techniques," and others. The experience in developing the monthly online newsletter has been positive and resulted in substantial engagement from the audience following POPNEURO's social media content. This concept can be easily adapted to other scientific fields or in-person scientific outreach, where printed newsletters can be utilized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
As one of the two wings of innovation and development, science popularization has become one of the most fundamental factors determining the level of material culture development and national creativity. Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering (Academicians for short), as outstanding role models of China's scientific and technological community, have actively borne social responsibility for science popularization and played an important role in different development periods. Entering a high-quality development stage, promoting the transformation of science popularization concepts, achieving high-quality science popularization supply, constructing a large-scale science popularization pattern, and planning a large-scale science popularization strategy to address the many challenges brought about by the knowledge explosion and the digital era and promte the process of Chinese modernization, have become an important task. Based on the analysis of the characteristics of academic popularization and the experience of popular science practice among academicians, this article reinterprets the role and significance of academic popularization from a new historical perspective. It also puts forward suggestions for better playing the role of academicians and promoting the prosperity and development of science popularization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the biographies of two gentlewomen, María de Betancourt (1758-1824) and Joana de Vigo (1779-1855), who lived respectively in Tenerife and Menorca, two crucial nodes in the scientific, commercial and military global networks of the late eighteenth century. Some of their scientific and literary contributions are mapped, paying particular attention to how they became active in contemporaneous learned networks. It is argued that the peculiar, intellectually rich microcosms of the islands shaped these women's lives in ways that enabled them to enter learned circles, either real or imaginary, and from a very modest site to contribute to the global circulation of ideas, goods and peoples. The study focuses on the strategies of engagement employed by medical doctors in YouTube videos. The goal of the analysis is to investigate multimodal strategies used in selected videos on the most popular medical YouTube channels in Poland. The study is conducted against a theoretical background that considers previous research on engagement strategies in science and popularization discourse (Hyland 2010; Luzón 2015, 2019; Sokół 2018). Engagement strategies involving reader pronouns, directives, questions, shared knowledge as well as humour, expression of opinions and emotions are investigated, as well as headings, visuals and music. The analysis reveals that medical doctors employ a vast array of diverse engagement strategies which do not form a uni- fied set of practices across the channels. The differences concern the frequency and type of strategies, such as the use of headings, visuals, special effects and music. The study also reveals considerable differences between the videos as to the degree to which the authors exploit the affordances of the audio-visual medium. The formats of the videos comprise both the more traditional, such as slides with a voice-over, as well as more novel approaches, such as presentation films. The strategies employed show that the authors attempt to form a distinctive and recognizable style of interaction with the audience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

45. Sharing Feelings and User Engagement on Twitter: It's All About Me and You.

- Abstract
This study explores how the expression of feelings and the use of personal pronouns on Twitter are associated with user engagement. Unlike most previous studies which focused on the types of emotions that generate user engagement, it uses the volume-control model, which also considers the social dimension of power. Looking at the usage of pronouns, it examines the balance achieved between popular messages that target larger groups and personalized messages that target smaller groups and individuals. The findings show that there is a significant difference between the motivation to share (retweet) and to reply to a message. Users on Twitter tend to retweet messages with popular characteristics, addressing larger groups with positive feelings. On the other hand, replies were associated with more personalized messages and a greater use of negative feelings. Users with more followers and friends presented a balance between popularization and personalization techniques, as their tweets were associated with higher customization of the messages to specific groups yet avoided negative feelings. In No Logo, Naomi Klein states: “It is not to sponsor culture but to be the culture”, referring to world-famous brands that started approaching new and experimental marketing techniques. Yet, as early as 1974, Pierre Bourdieu argued that the discourse on haute couture was already a discourse on haute culture, undoing the exquisitely philosophical prejudice that collocated fashion among small and frivolous things, unworthy of observation. This paper returns to this question through investigating the case of Gucci Aria, which used famous books of philosophy and critical theory as props. Even if this is not a novelty in the fashion world – from Miuccia Prada’s “radical chic-ism” to Martin Margiela’s deconstruction – what is new is that fashion has found itself having to study and incorporate knowledge that comes from the so-called high culture usually aimed at a niche audience of intellectuals. This is more than the attempt of lifestyle branding to address social and political movements’ vindications as part of the social corporate responsibility strategy. What is the purpose behind selling theory itself? How can this exploitation carried out by fashion brands be read as a way of popularizing high culture? Are fashion designers playing at being organic intellectuals and is conspicuous consumption finding its new goal?
