Die Corona-Pandemie hat das Leben aller Menschen in Deutschland fundamental betroffen. Fünf Jahre nach ihrem Ausbruch im März 2020 ziehen die Beiträge dieses Bandes Bilanz darüber, welche Spuren die Pandemie in der Gesellschaft hinterlassen hat. Von der verstärkten Nutzung des Homeoffice über die Herausforderungen für Selbstständige bis hin zu den Veränderungen in der Mitbestimmung: Die Beiträge zeigen, wie sich Arbeitsformen und soziale Ungleichheiten entwickelt haben und welche Lehren daraus gezogen werden können. Themen wie die Krise in der beruflichen Ausbildung, geschlechtsspezifische Arbeitszeitmuster während der Pandemie sowie soziale Ungleichheit und Armut stehen ebenfalls im Fokus. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt liegt auf den gesellschaftspolitischen Auswirkungen der Pandemiemaßnahmen: Sorgen und Belastungen führten bei einigen Bürger*innen zu einer politischen Entfremdung und einer nachhaltigen Stärkung antidemokratischer Kräfte. Rethinking Migration brings together researchers across multiple disciplines to investigate how we can rethink migration and movement. It explores mobility beyond the human and across time, from the movement of soil in the Middle Ages to contemporary cow passports. It demonstrates how today’s international borders are entangled in deeply entrenched politics of race and nation. This entanglement interacts with the idea of the migrant – and the emigrant – as represented in the media and popular culture to reflect and reproduce changing ideas and hierarchies of belonging and community. At the same time, the fact that humans move, within and across many kinds of borders, reflects and impacts on ecosystems, socioeconomic relations and technological change. Migration is not a stand-alone issue and this volume shows how mobility scholarship can be connected to many other fields and struggles for justice.

This scholarly book aims to illustrate the importance of incorporating internal migration data into development planning initiatives and processes to gain insight into both short- and long-term social changes. This publication draws on census data pertaining to internal migration flows in the Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces of South Africa. The author analyses, compares, and presents data across three post-apartheid periods, 1996–2001, 2001–2006, and 2006–2011, to illustrate how current forces drive and direct migration flows and how this impacts the social dynamics within the two provinces. This book highlights three significant shifts when comparing the two provinces’ pre- and post-1994 internal migration trends. First, it examines the change in the political context framing mobility. Second, it explores the change in the types of internal migration flows sustaining urbanisation. Third, and lastly, it analyses the changing profile of mobile migrants in the Northern Cape and Western Cape. Internal migration and development planning in South Africa makes a compelling case for a strategic and coordinated approach by governments by demonstrating the influence of political and economic forces on internal migration flows and their impact on community social dynamics. Such an approach is essential to address the increasing developmental constraints and challenges posed by internal migration in post-apartheid South Africa.

Beeinflusst die soziale Lage befragter Individuen ihre politische Ideologie? Martin Ulrich erforscht diesen Zusammenhang in seiner quantitativen Analyse. Auf welche Art und Weise formen strukturell-institutionelle Bedingungen und gesellschaftliche Vorstellungen die Möglichkeiten, ein Studium an einer Universität aufzugreifen – und es auch abzuschließen? Und wie hat sich das im Laufe der Zeit verändert? Magdalena Fellner untersucht in ihrer historisch-vergleichenden Studie, welchen Machenschaften die Bedeutungen und Zuschreibungen des Begriffs der Studierfähigkeit von den Anfängen der Hochschulgeschichte bis heute unterliegen. Erfüllen die potenziellen Studierenden nicht die Anforderungen der herrschenden Machtelite einer Zeit, führt dies zum Ausschluss sozialer Gruppen und damit zur Aufrechterhaltung einer hierarchischen Klassengesellschaft. Deutlich wird, dass der klassische Begriff der Studierfähigkeit Probleme birgt, die soziale Ungleichheiten verstärken, anstatt ihnen entgegenzuwirken. This open-access volume accompanies the microdata release of the EU Loneliness Survey. Loneliness, often referred to as the ‘epidemic of the 21st century’, has emerged as a grave public health concern. For years, a lack of comprehensive European cross-national data hindered a thorough examination of this issue. In 2022, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre conducted the inaugural EU Loneliness Survey, covering around 30,000 individuals in 27 European nations. The book sheds light on who is most affected by loneliness, identifies contributing experiences and behaviours, addresses the stigmatisation of loneliness and discusses its societal impact. Furthermore, it emphasises the importance of interventions to combat loneliness. Finally, the book discusses the challenges of survey design and offers valuable insights for the monitoring of loneliness in Europe in the future. This makes the book a must-read for scholars and academics interested in population economics, public health and social well-being.

Based on original historical tables, Northern Ontario in Historical Statistics, 1871–2021 offers an overview of major long-term population, social composition, employment, and urban concentration trends over 150 years in the region now called “Northern Ontario” (or “Nord de l’Ontario”). David Leadbeater and his collaborators compare Northern Ontario relative to Southern Ontario, as well as detail changes at the district and local levels. They also examine the employment population rate, unemployment, economic dependency, and income distribution, particularly over recent decades of decline since the 1970s. Although deeply experienced by Indigenous peoples, the settler-colonial structure of Northern Ontario’s development plays little explicit analytical role in official government discussions and policy. Northern Ontario in Historical Statistics, 1871–2021, therefore, aims to provide context for the long-standing hinterland colonial question: How do ownership, control, and use of the land and its resources benefit the people who live there? Leadbeater and his collaborators pay special attention to foundational conditions in Northern Ontario’s hinterland-colonial development including Indigenous relative to settler populations, treaty and reserve areas, and provincially controlled “unorganized territories.” Colonial biases in Canadian censuses are discussed critically as a contribution towards decolonizing changes in official statistics.

Urban Lives emphasizes the importance of a micro-level approach in examining the lives of individuals and families in an industrial city, spanning over a century. The work deepens the understanding of major societal shifts and how they are intertwined with demographic behavior over the past 120 years. These societal transformations encompassed groundbreaking advancements in living standards, a relocation of rural populations to urban hubs, and significant alternations in the fabric of everyday working life, ultimately reshaping people’s lives. In conjunction, there were changes in individual life courses, particularly how individuals experienced basic demographic events: births, deaths, marriage, and migration. The volume explores family dynamics, the evolution of health disparities and mortality inequality, the paths of social and economic mobility, and the changing landscapes of immigration and residential segregation. It fills a void in the narrative of twentieth-century demographic, social, and economic history and paints a portrait of how personal choices and behavior were shaped by societal transformation. These shifts, closely linked with industrialization and post-industrialization, coincided with the emergence and culmination of the welfare state. Insbesondere positives Schreiben kann durch das Erinnern und Reflektieren schöner Momente und Emotionen nachweislich zu einem höheren Wohlbefinden und zur Steigerung der Selbstwirksamkeit führen. Die Begleitung eines Menschen mit Demenz geht für pflegende Angehörige häufig mit einer Vielzahl an Belastungen und Herausforderungen einher, weshalb diese häufig aus der Belastungsperspektive erlebt wird. Schöne Momente innerhalb der Sorgebeziehung zwischen pflegenden Angehörigen und Menschen mit Demenz werden dabei seltener bewusst wahrgenommen. Die Ergebnisse der Tagebuchstudie zeigen individuelle Auswirkungen der Wahrnehmung und Sensibilisierung schöner Momente.

Les conflits d’aménagement et de nature sont-ils le vecteur d’une recomposition du lien politique, ce lien social caractéristique de l’Etat-nation? Cinq conflits d’aménagement, tous situés en Camargue et dans les années 1990, donnent à voir l’action publique comme espace de rencontre entre l’État et des communautés de citoyens. L’auteur analyse et confronte plusieurs dynamiques: celle des associations (prendre la parole), celle des procédures de concertation (donner la parole). Leur confrontation et leur dialogue font se croiser le local, le particulier d’un côté, le général et le global d’un autre côté, dans une troisième dynamique (construire l’acceptable). L’environnementalisme – cette implication explicite d’êtres non-humains dans les affaires humaines – met ainsi à l’épreuve la relation de la communauté des citoyens et son gardien, l’État. Au-delà de l’opposition entre localisme et globalisme, dans leur opposition même, émerge la figure du citoyen localisé, tandis que l’État se profile comme protecteur de la diversité nationale. Cette citoyenneté localisée court toutefois deux risques: celui du particularisme normalisé et la tentation xénophobe.

Human evolutionary demography is an emerging field blending natural science with social science. Contemporary societies are aging – but what does that mean? Is this something bad? And can societies age as a whole? By bringing together psychological, gerontological, and sociological findings, this open access book opens up a hitherto unique, multifaceted, and realistic view of the phenomenon of old age and the process of aging. The volume is based on the results of the project “Ageing as Future”, a long-term project network (2007-2021) involving a total of more than 30 scientists worldwide. The focus of the project was threefold: A first issue was concerned with how views on aging influence development in old age; secondly, the project analyzed determinants and consequences of provision for old age; and thirdly, it investigated the different ways in which aging is shaped by managing time in old age. For more than a decade, the authors conducted quantitative and qualitative studies, involving large samples from three different continents. The results show that one-sided views of old age – whether negative stereotypes or positive exaggerations – do not do justice to the complexity of the experience of aging. Based on these results, the authors plead for individual and societal acceptance of the social fact of aging – and for the right to live an autonomous and dignified life in old age just as in other phases of life. Ageing as Future: A study by the Volkswagen Foundation presents findings from a unique large international study that are of interest to aging researchers around the world: academically, socio-politically, practically, and personally. This open access book investigates from a life-course perspective the individualization process and the challenges faced by young adults in post-collectivist China, where people are enjoined to "liberate" (jiefang) their individual capacities, to "rely on themselves" (kao ziji) and to no longer "depend on the state" (kao guojia). Based on unique quantitative and qualitative data, this book provides a solid empirical portrait of Chinese youths and transformation of social policies in post-collectivist China This book will be a great resource to students, academics as well as social scientists and policy-makers who wish not only to understand how, in such a short period of time, young adults and their families have managed to navigate from a relatively egalitarian society to one of the most unequal, but also how the articulation between socialist and neoliberal ideologies is reconfiguring social and economic relations as well as women’s and men’s life-course. The basis of the English translation of this book from its French original manuscript was done with the help of artificial intelligence. Some places experience population growth and increasing job opportunities, while others undergo a decline in population and the number of workplaces. What are the driving forces behind the developments we have seen in municipalities and regions in Norway since 2000? A large part of the regional growth patterns in Norway can be explained by structural conditions. Differences in each area’s centrality, business structure and demographics can explain much of the disparity in growth that we have seen in the last twenty years. In this book, we present the regional growth model we have developed, the attractiveness model, which can explain how areas have evolved and predict future population development. The population projections from this model differ greatly from those of Statistics Norway (SSB) for many municipalities, especially in rural areas. If we are correct, population development in these areas will be significantly weaker than Statistics Norway’s projections, which serve as a basis for regional policy. Some municipalities have achieved higher growth than predicted by the model, either as a result of greater increases in new residents or stronger job growth in the local business sector. Such municipalities have been attractive for business and residence, and achieved stronger growth than the structural conditions would otherwise suggest. The vast majority of municipalities want to stimulate their own population development in order to offset aging and decline in the number of children in their kindergartens and schools. Forskjeller i stedenes sentralitet, næringsstruktur og demografi kan forklare mye av de store ulikhetene i vekst som vi har sett de siste tjue årene. I denne boka viser vi hvordan vi har utviklet en regional vekstmodell, attraktivitetsmodellen, som kan forklare steders utvikling og predikere framtidig befolkningsutvikling. Befolkningsframskrivingene fra denne modellen avviker sterkt fra Statistisk sentralbyrås (SSB) befolkningsframskrivinger for mange kommuner, spesielt i distriktene. Hvis vi har rett, vil befolkningsutviklingen i distriktene bli vesentlig svakere enn det som SSB framskriver og som er lagt til grunn i distriktspolitikken i Norge. Noen kommuner har oppnådd høyere vekst enn forventet av modellen, enten ved at de har hatt høyere innflytting eller sterkere arbeidsplassvekst i næringslivet. Slike kommuner har vært attraktive for bosetting eller næringsliv og har oppnådd sterkere vekst enn de strukturelle betingelsene tilsier. De aller fleste kommunene ønsker å stimulere sin egen befolkningsutvikling for å unngå sterk aldring og synkende barnetall i barnehager og skoler. I boka trekker vi fram mange eksempler på slike kommuner som har greid å vokse mer enn normalt.

Mittelstädte haben eine besondere Relevanz für die Entwicklung von robusten, krisenfesten und nachhaltigen Raumstrukturen in Deutschland. Zugleich stehen sie vor fundamentalen Zukunftsaufgaben wie Klimawandel, demografischem Wandel und Strukturwandel - und zwar etwas anders als Großstädte. The book explores the concepts of migration, space, memory and identification drawn from the experiences of Istanbulite Romiois/Greeks and through the notion of being minority. The primary problematic examined in this book revolves around the meaning of these concepts, the functions they serve, and how they are related to the identity of minorities who have experienced ruptures like mass migrations. The concepts such as place and memory are addressed through the way in which Istanbulite Romiois/Greeks create meaningful connections around spaces, identity and memory as evidenced by spatial arrangements and how space in general and in Istanbul is specifically rendered sacred.

Der Autor zeigt den Verlauf der sozialen, politischen und wirtschaftlichen Prozesse in den Regionen Memelland, Kaliningrader Gebiet, Ermland und Masuren nach 1945 auf. Er vergleicht ihre jeweiligen Entwicklungen kritisch miteinander und rekurriert dabei auf die Nationalbildungsprozesse im späten 19. Jahrhundert sowie die Ereignisse am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Analysen stützen sich auf eigene soziologische Feldforschung. Zahlreiche Interviews, direkte und indirekte Beobachtungen sowie quantitative Untersuchungen wurden durch Archivstudien und durch die Auswertung von amtlichen Dokumenten, Memoiren, Fachliteratur sowie Presseezeugnissen ergänzt.

Während immer neue Spaltungslinien wie soziale Ungleichheit, politische Polarisierung oder der Umgang mit Krisen zu gesellschaftlicher Fragmentierung führen, wird übersehen, dass Nachbarschaft im Alltag ein Potenzial für Zusammenhalt birgt. Das Buch geht daher der Frage nach, was Nachbarschaft eigentlich ist, und präsentiert zahlreiche empirische Befunde. Der Band geht diese über die ausführliche Vorstellung verschiedener Migrantengruppen an, woran eine fundierte Diskussion grundlegender Konzepte wie Integration, Transkulturalität und Hybridität anschließt. Exemplarische Projekte über die Faszination des Fremden als Alltagserfahrung oder Strategien sprachlicher Verständigung führen zudem in die migrationssoziologische qualitative Forschung ein. Viele Menschen suchen Wohnraum, doch Neubau löst das Problem nicht: Er ist teuer, verbraucht Fläche und belastet das Klima. Eine Lösung verspricht der »unsichtbare Wohnraum« - ungenutzte Zimmer älterer Personen nach Auszug der Kinder. Daniel Fuhrhop untersucht das Potenzial der Wohnsuffizienz anhand sozialer Programme wie der Vermittlung von Wohnpaaren nach dem Modell »Wohnen für Hilfe«, dem Umbau von Wohnungen, dem Umzug sowie sozialer Wohnraumvermittlung. Sein Fazit: Insgesamt können so jährlich 100.000 Wohnungen entstehen - ohne Klimabelastung und mit der Chance auf Nähe und Nachbarschaft.

Dies ist ein Open-Access-Buch. Trotz des schnellen Wachstums des Anteils der Bevölkerung in einem Alter ab 80 Jahren an der Gesamtbevölkerung ist das Wissen über diese Bevölkerungsgruppe bislang gering. Zwar gibt es thematisch, methodisch und regional spezifische Studien, jedoch keine repräsentative Erfassung der Lebenssituation und Lebensqualität dieser Altersgruppe für den gesamtdeutschen Raum. Eine gute Datenlage ist jedoch notwendig: Zum einen, um den besonderen Unterstützungsbedarfen im hohen Alter zukünftig besser gerecht werden zu können. Zum anderen, um Lösungsansätze für sozialpolitische Herausforderungen wie der sozialen Sicherung im Alter sowie im Hinblick auf eine Generationengerechtigkeit entwickeln zu können. Schließlich, um negativen Altersbildern und Vorurteilen über die Lebensqualität im hohen Alter empirisch fundiert entgegenwirken zu können. Die Studie "Hohes Alter in Deutschland“ (D80+) ist eine bundesweit repräsentative Querschnittsbefragung der hochaltrigen Menschen in Privathaushalten und in Heimen. Sie wird vom Bundesministerium für Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend (BMFSFJ) gefördert und gemeinsam vom Cologne Center for Ethics, Rights, Economics, and Social Sciences of Health (ceres) und dem Deutschen Zentrum für Altersfragen (DZA) durchgeführt. This open access volume offers original essays on how motherhood and mothering are represented in contemporary fiction and life writing across several national contexts. Providing a broad range of perspectives in terms of geopolitical places, thematic concerns, and theoretical and interdisciplinary approaches, it demonstrates the significance of literary narratives for understanding and critiquing motherhood and mothering as social phenomena and subjective experiences. The chapters contextualize motherhood and mothering in terms of their particular national and cultural location and analyze narratives about mothers who are firmly placed in one national context, as well as those who are in “in-between” positions due to migrant experiences. The contributions foreground and link together the themes central to the volume: embodied experience and maternal embodiment; notions of what is “normal” or natural (or not) about motherhood; maternal health and illness; mother-daughter relations; maternality and memory; and the (im)possibilities of giving voice to the mother. They raise questions about how motherhood and mothering are marked by absence and/or presence, as well as by profound ambivalences.

Als professionell Pflegende verfügen sie über Fachwissen, pflegefachliche Kompetenzen und Kenntnisse zum Versorgungssystem. Als pflegende Angehörige sind sie persönlich betroffen. Die qualitative Studie fokussiert auf das Erleben der Doppelrolle als beruflich Pflegende und zugleich pflegende Angehörige. Sind dies ‚zwei Paar Schuhe‘? Ausgehend von einer Literaturrecherche und der Sekundäranalyse von Interviewdaten wurden episodische Interviews mit 15 Interviewpartner*innen geführt. Die Datenanalyse verdeutlicht ihre Aufgaben im Krankheitsverlauf, welche Entwicklungen sie durchlaufen und ihre Erfahrungen in der Doppelrolle. Die Studie zeigt, dass die Befragten über ein Repertoire von Handlungsoptionen verfügen, die sie im Umgang mit Fachpersonen der Gesundheitsversorgung nutzen. Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse werden in einem Modell gebündelt, das ihre Positionierung als pflegende Angehörige und zugleich Pflegefachperson im Versorgungskontext veranschaulicht.

The special issue of Romani Studies entitled “Romani people as object and subject of scientific inquiry: Scientification of Roma or RomaNization of science?” brings forward innovative approaches to critically revise the most disseminated epistemic platforms for studying the past and the presence of Romani people. This collection should be accepted as a step to overcoming the contemporary epistemic crisis in studying minorities which stems from opposition of two extremes, namely, relegating the specifics of social groups on the margins of research interest in order to avoid the risk of essentialization and privileging the voices of those on “periphery” as the exclusively endowed with the right to produce knowledge. Diese Sammlung sollte als ein Schritt zur Überwindung der gegenwärtigen epistemischen Krise bei der Erforschung von Minderheiten angesehen werden, die aus dem Gegensatz zweier Extreme resultiert, nämlich der Verbannung der Besonderheiten sozialer Gruppen an den Rand des Forschungsinteresses, um das Risiko einer Essentialisierung und Privilegierung der Minderheiten zu vermeiden Stimmen derjenigen an der „Peripherie“, die ausschließlich das Recht haben, Wissen zu produzieren. This open access book provides a unique research perspective on life course transitions. Here, transitions are understood as social processes and practices. Leveraging the recent “practice turn” in the social sciences, the contributors analyze how life course transitions are “done.” This book introduces the concept of “doing transitions” and its implications for theories and methods. It presents fresh empirical research on “doing transitions” in different life phases (e.g., childhood, young adulthood, later life) and life domains (e.g., education, work, family, health, migration). This book discusses the historical context, country experience, and best practices that led to eliminating infectious diseases from the WHO’s South-East Asia Region, such as malaria, lymphatic filariasis, yaws, trachoma, and mother-to-child HIV in the mid-twentieth and twenty-first century. The UN Sustainable Development Goals (3.3) targets to end AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases and other communicable diseases by 2030. In this context, this book is of high significance to countries from the SEA region and around the globe. This open access book provides an overview and analysis of the causes and consequences of the massive and highly consequential transition in reproductive behaviour that occurred in Asia, Latin America, and Africa since the mid-20th century. In the 1950s contraceptive use was rare and women typically spend most of their reproductive years bearing and rearing children. By 2020 fertility and contraceptive use in Asia and Latin America reached levels commonly observed in the developed world. Africa’s fertility is still high, but transitions have started in all countries. This monograph is the first to provide a comprehensive analysis of these trends and their determinants, covering changes in reproductive behaviour (e.g., use of contraception and abortion), preferences (e.g., desire to limit and space births) and the role of socioeconomic development (e.g., education). The role of government policies and in particular family planning programs is discussed in depth. Particular attention is given to provide a balanced assessment of several political and scientific controversies that have beset the field. As such this book provides an interesting read for a wide audience of undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and public health policy makers.
