This contribution applies the Q methodology to investigate Chinese public employees' accountability preferences under different accountability relationships in delivering public services. We identify four accountability preferences: a vertically oriented accountability, a network‐style accountability, a style of accountability between market and participatory accountability, and a vertically oriented style of market accountability. Our data show that Chinese public employees hold varied accountability preferences in public service delivery, and hierarchy is a relatively popular one. It is suggested that governors should effectively align different accountability relationships with the aim of better steering the behavior of public employees in public service delivery. - Abstract
To what extent do expert opinions affect public opinion in policy making? While most existing studies were conducted in democracies, experts' influence under authoritarian settings is still understudied. This paper examines how expert opinion and vocational affiliation influence public attitudes toward genetically modified (GM) food in China. Through a survey experiment with over 1600 respondents, we find that experts' endorsement can increase policy support for GM food but that their opposition exerts no influence. Different vocational affiliations do not generate significantly different effects, although endorsement from foreign experts has larger effects than endorsement from domestic counterparts, who have closer connections with the Chinese government. We finally discuss the policy implications of expert involvement in policy making and promoting GM food in China based on the above findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this work is to show the importance of the licenses of passage -customs records where the goods that were transported through the Iberian Peninsula were noted down- for the History of Art and, specifically, as a source of information on the missing ceramics. From their study and analysis, we can see that earthenware and porcelain travelled between European courts as royal gift, as well as to the homes of the elite of society, which is evidence that it was an artistic object valued and esteemed by society during the 16th and 17th centuries.

- Abstract
Darkening of the dental crown is one of the consequences that most motivates patients to seek professional help. However, its management becomes challenging when having to mask a single tooth element in the oral cavity. The objective of this work was to report a clinical case of a patient, victim of dental trauma, which occurred 20 years ago, the consequences of which were the development of a periapical lesion and severe discoloration and darkening of the dental crown, in which there was an endodontic-dentistic interrelationship. for the success of the treatment. Endodontic retreatment was performed to control the infection and cementation of a fiber post and porcelain crown for aesthetic rehabilitation. After 12 months, it was possible to notice complete repair of the periapical lesion and aesthetic harmony of the smile, configuring the proposed treatment as a success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyses the impacts of an international cooperation project in the field of "eco‐city" development in China, using a policy transfer perspective. It explores the relationship between policy transfers and paradigm shifts and discussing the thesis of a "Chinese art" of policy transfers, according to which Chinese policymakers operate a form of cherry‐picking that prefers technical recommendations over policy or procedural recommendations and is dictated by "national self‐interest." Based on a longitudinal study of the transfer of a renewal paradigm to a Chinese city, Yangzhou, the study shows that the transfer resulted in significant policy change, going beyond technical aspects. Therefore, the thesis of "Chinese art" is not confirmed. However, a full‐fledged paradigm shift was not observable as elements of the old paradigm are still present. Policy transfers can thus result in paradigm shifts, but their institutionalization is likely to be slow and gradual. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Local policy experimentation was a driving force behind China's economic progress, but its results in the field of social policy are more ambiguous. This article takes a lesson‐drawing perspective on the transfer of international hospital payment reforms to Chinese cities, focusing on the Urban Employees' Basic Medical Insurance. We distinguish two waves of reform. The first wave was driven by local government initiatives dominated by simplified versions of international models which lacked strong prospective payment components (inspirations) and protected local bureaucratic and hospital interests. The second wave was driven by central government intervention dominated by syntheses and adaptations with strong prospective payment components and was more oriented toward patients' interests. Data were collected via expert interviews, administrative documents, academic studies, and newspaper articles. We find that elements of social policy are transferred depending on central–local interaction, with pressure from the center needed to overcome local bureaucratic self‐interest. How do small states create potent foreign policy? This article argues that small states like Taiwan, Mongolia, and Singapore create effective foreign policy by engaging in smart diplomacy. Smart diplomacy, we argue, is an approach whereby smaller states must choose rational foreign policy objectives in a targeted region they can attain through a mix of soft power and niche national branding. We further argue that for most small states, their foreign policy options are limited, and smart diplomacy is the most rational way forward. By analyzing Taiwan's New Southbound Policy as a framework for smart diplomacy, this article argues that a small state will need to engage in smart diplomacy as it seeks to engage its neighbors in the region on people‐to‐people basis rather than through traditional diplomacy. To achieve that, it would need a clear national brand and niche expertise it can offer its partners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COLD War, 1945-1991 - Abstract
The Van Fleet Mission's Report has long received much attention in Korea and Japan as a controversial document stating the United States' position on the Dokdo/Takeshima dispute. However, linking the Report only with Dokdo/Takeshima is missing the forest for the trees. The Van Fleet Report's genuine importance with regard to the document's intention is that it was an intended blueprint for an American grand strategy in the Asia‐Pacific. Its central objective was to organize an anti‐communist bloc with Japan as its core and use it to counter the expansionist tendency of Chinese communism toward the Asia‐Pacific and strengthen Korea, Japan, and the Philippines military capabilities. The aim of this study was to survey oral exostoses in human populations that belonged to the same region encompassing five periods over 6000 years, to determine the prevalence and its changing trend over time. A total of 306 human jaws belonging to the modern Xi'an region and four archeological sites, Banpo (6700-5600 years BP), Shaolingyuan (3000 years BP), Shanren (2200 years BP) and Chang’an (1000-1300 years BP), were investigated. The degree of buccal exostosis (BE), torus mandibularis (TM) and torus palatinus (TP) and the TP shape were recorded. The prevalence of BE, TM, and TP in the five groups was 20.8 %-62.5 %, 17.5 %-71.5 %, and 31.7 %-74.2 %, respectively. The differences in the three types of exostoses among the five groups were all statistically significant, but only TM and TP showed a decreasing trend over time. A high and quite diverse prevalence of oral exostoses was found in the five groups of samples. Decreasing trends in relation to time for TM and TP were detected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presents the process of obtaining porcelain from the ashes of bovine bones through calcination and milling procedures. Plaster molds and testing with oxides are part of the methods applied, resulting in the vitrification of ceramic pieces. Using this process, a series of porcelain snack bowls were designed inspired by the cuisine of Maranhão – a Brazilian state. By decreasing the amount of solid waste discarded in nature and by spreading new knowledge among ceramic producers in Maranhão, we strived to contribute with the development of local communities through design.

- Abstract
Among the most defining features of the figure of the true collector revolved around the individual who acquired works of art and sumptuary objects, as well as literary works and natural genres, among other forms, for his own taste and delight, according to his own criteria and convictions, regardless of official criticism and the formal and economic values of the artistic work. Analysing from this perspective, we can see how FelipeII, King of Spain since the abdication of his father CarlosV in 1556, brought together all the adjectives of the individual collector and became the first great collector of the Spanish Habsburgs. However, it will be the detailed study of the preserved inventories of the Spanish monarch where FelipeII's personal critical judgement is demonstrated through the objects collected of different kinds and provenance. In this study we will focus on the records of faience and porcelain from Italy, a set of pieces of outstanding artistic value that appear in the historical documentation of the 16th century and which have gone largely unnoticed in the history of art., Los rasgos más definitorios de la figura del auténtico coleccionista giraban en torno al individuo que adquiría obras de arte y objetos suntuarios, así como obras literarias y géneros naturales entre otras formas, por gusto propio y deleite, bajo sus propios criterios y convicciones al margen de la crítica oficial y los valores formales y económicos de la obra artística.

Both tea and porcelain quickly captivated the markets and impacted the cultures they came in contact with, and Europe was no exception. In Europe, from the contact and fascination with China the chinoiserie, an aesthetic and artistic movement inserted into the rococo baroque, was born. During the golden age of chinoiserie there was a high consumption of exotic goods originating phenomenon such as the “five o’clock tea” and “the porcelain fever.” The tea set is therefore the perfect junction between these two commercial goods. Through an analysis of the Chinese porcelain tea sets that came to Europe we can get an understanding of the artistic tastes and tendencies as well as shed light on the evolution of the tea consumption habits. Portugal, the country responsible for initially bringing tea and porcelain to Europe, was the one that least explored their commercial potential, as well as the country that developed their national production of porcelain the latest. Using the tea set as a study object this dissertation aims to look for the remain of Chinese aesthetic influences in the early productions of Portuguese porcelain which were made by the factory of Vista Alegre.,

Sinterização seletiva a laser ,Porcelana ,Poliamida ,Manufatura aditiva ,Polipropileno - Abstract
Additive manufacturing is a way of producing three-dimensional objects whose most notable advantage is the manufacture of components with a high level of geometric complexity, a fact that makes industries such as Porcelanas da Costa Verde S.A. to develop more and more interest in these technologies, seeking to obtain innovative products and explore new markets. The technology addressed in this work was Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), thus exploring the potential of the technology in the porcelain industry. Several formulations of raw material for the impressions were studied, with the objective of arriving at objects that proved to be possible to print without defects of porcelain pieces through this technology. Raw material mixtures for printing with commercial polyamide and commercial polypropylene were tested. The influence of the addition of heat-treated porcelain powder to the same mixtures was also studied, varying its mass percentage in the mixtures. After all the characterization of the powders that served as raw material (granule analysis, thermal analysis, analysis of the morphology of the particles, determination of the flowability flow and Hausner ratio) and the printings of the idealized mixtures, the samples and the printed pieces were subjected to several evaluations: analysis in an electronic scanning system to analyze the microstructures, bending tests, density analysis, analysis of printing accuracy, analysis of shrinkage during firings and even a characterization of the printability rate of each mixture. It has been proved that printing via selective indirect laser sintering is possible with porcelain, it has also been proved that the addition of heat treated powder is beneficial to the process. The decision of the sacrificial material polyamide vs polypropylene in the mixtures is something that deserves to be further studied since both have advantages and disadvantages and the decision to use one of the two materials must be made according to the intended objective. Although prints with PP1200 showed excellent indicators, in terms of print detail, the best result was achieved with a mixture of 25% PA12 L-1600, 35% heat-treated porcelain atomized powder and 40% porcelain atomized powder. This work was carried out as part of the curricular internship, the result of the partnership between Porcelanas da Costa Verde S.A. (CV) and Physics Department of Aveiro University. The internship aimed to study sintering techniques for ceramic materials through unconventional methods, optimizing the respective conditions/parameters of the process through the analysis of the electrical characteristics of the porcelain paste. In addition of electrical analysis, the ceramic materials were also subjected to morphological and structural characterization. The conventional method currently used in the first stage of porcelain sintering (chacotagem) frees gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect, in addition to the need to reach high temperatures (>900 ºC) and have very long cycles (between 15 and 20 hours). The solution involves decarbonization through the use of unconventional sintering methods. Some of these methods are: cold sintering, ultra-fast at high temperatures (UHS), by microwave, by plasma (SPS) and Flash. The percentage of feldspar in the liquid paste samples were changed in order to study its influence on conductivity. It was verify that the liquid paste and replica samples (liquid paste reproduced in the laboratory) obtained very similar results. On the other hand, it was verified that the amount of feldspar present in the liquid paste samples does not interfere in a linear way with the conductivity.

The archaeological interventions that occurred in 2016 in the archaeological site of “Boqueirão do Duro”, in Lisbon, have revealed important information about the evolution of Lisbon’s waterfront. This site chronologically framed from XVIII century onwards, revealed port and trash landfill activities realized in said space, before it’s industrialization. During the works, several ceramic materials of various origins were collected. Of these materials, a large quantity of Chinese porcelain and some fragments of Martaban pots stand out. Within the porcelain group, two different groups have been identified: one quite numerous and homogeneous in terms of type and decoration; and another less numerous but with a greater variety in general. The theme of Chinese porcelain in Portuguese archaeological contexts lacks more studies and information, in general. Even though few studies have appeared in recent years, this subject is rather neglected in Portugal. Unlike Art History that has shown great interest in these pieces over the last few years. Thus, this study focusses on the group of porcelain collected in this space. Seen that this archaeological site has already been studied in a general manner, a more in-depth study of these pieces is necessary to complement the information and characterization of this space. This study not only presents itself as valuable information for a theme which lacks more information, but also as an important contribution to the consumption of porcelain in Lisbon over more than 300 years of trade with China. This set has shown the presence of a large variety in chronological and decorative terms, presenting itself as unique in Portugal to date. Although the Martaban pots are not as numerous as the porcelains, this study covers this wide range of ceramics of Asian origin.

This work describes a project developed at the Department of Materials and Ceramics Engineering of the University of Aveiro in partnership with the company Vista Alegre Atlantis. The objective of the thesis was to develop an alternative method to UV hardened glues, in order to join materials that, until then, were not possible to join. UV glues do not work, when they are applied on dark, amber, or opaque tones, since these absorb radiation, and prevent its passage to the adhesive. Hence, becoming impractical to bond these materials. This is where the opportunity arises to test new methods of bonding materials, one of them being flash bonding. Flash bonding consists of the application of an electric field, under certain conditions of temperature and electric current, which, by the Joule effect and ionic electromigration, promotes a fast bond (few seconds) between the materials. In glasses, this event is called electric field-induced softening (EFIS), in which the glass softens under the application of a DC field. With this came the need to understand a little more about this phenomenon. The samples were characterized electrically. The activation energies corresponding to the onset of the ionic conduction process were calculated from experimental data. The ionic conductivity depends on the migration of sodium ions and is influenced by the mixed alkali effect (MAE). Based on these observations, it was concluded that EFIS comprises the following phenomena: dipolar polarization, long-range ion diffusion, proton injection, and dielectric breakdown. It was also evaluated the influence of roughness on the bonding process of the materials. The electric current path is ensured by the sample´s volume and not by the surface. It was proved that there is a relationship between the electric field value to initiate conductivity and the thickness of the glass, which in this case manifests itself in the pair of glass plates. A study was conducted regarding the changes in the experimental conditions of the FJ to analyze the influence of current intensity, test time, and electrode position. Micrographs of the bonded samples, and the distribution of chemical elements obtained by electron microscopy (SEM) and EDS, respectively, showed that the application of electric fields generates defects and promotes the bonding process, facilitating the role of ion diffusion. The project fulfilled its goal by being able to bond glasses of different colors triggered by the EFIS effect. The same applies when trying to bond porcelain and porcelain to glass. The thesis subject now presented is based on a partnership between the Materials and Ceramics Engineering Department (DEMaC) of University of Aveiro (UA) and the Mota Ceramics Solutions Group, S.A. (MCS). The internship was focused on the characterisation of a cordieritic porcelain intended to produce porcelain tableware with a higher value of thermal shock resistance when compared to the traditional porcelain. In that context, the present report accounts for: i) a brief note related to the company, ii) a literature review on porcelain and on shock thermal resistance of ceramic materials, iii) a brief analysis of ternary phase diagrams, with special attention to silica – alumina – magnesia phase diagram, as it contains the cordierite phase, iv) a review on the impact that thermal expansion coefficient of a material has on its thermal shock resistance and how the incorporation of the cordierite phase is expected to increase this last property, and v) the physical and chemical characterisation of cordieritic porcelain, by experimental techniques such as scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (DRX), dilatometric thermal analyses (DIL), density by Archimedes principle and helium pycnometry, module of rupture (MOR), pyroplastic deformation and, finally, CIELab analysis. The porcelain bodies were fired under six different conditions, upon the maximum temperatures of 1.330, 1.350 and 1.370 ºC, with and without a thermal treatment, at 1.150 ºC during the cooling stage. As a result, the bodies were composed of cordierite in more than 50 wt.%. For that reason, it’s mean thermal expansion coefficient (from 100 to 650 ºC) went down to 3,5x10⁻⁶ ºC⁻¹, smaller than the coefficient of traditional porcelain, typically situated around 5,0x10⁻⁶ ºC⁻¹. In terms of mechanical strength, the ceramic bodies presented values of MOR up to 90 MPa. This characteristic was followed by its whiteness, distinguished by a L parameter higher than 90. These four characteristics, joined by many others described in the present report, indicate that this formulation could produce, under the right firing conditions, porcelain tableware resistant to thermal shocks. Porcelains composed of kaolin-quartz-feldspar are called triaxial porcelains. The use of alumina as a substitute for quartz in porcelains has been developed for some time. The results show a significant improvement in their mechanical properties, but alumina has a high cost. The possibility of using alternative materials as a source of alumina with lower cost was investigated. In this work, alternative raw materials were used as a source of alumina: refractory bauxite, primary aluminum hydroxide, reprecipitated aluminum hydroxide. Compositions with commercial alumina and quartz were also formulated to better understand the effects of adding these alternative materials. The raw materials were milled, dried, and characterized by analysis of the particle size distribution, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray fluorescence. The compositions were formulated by replacing the different sources of alumina in the formulation of porcelain. The compositions studied were shaped by pressing and sintered at different temperatures (1150-1400 ºC). The results showed that the use of bauxite and aluminum hydroxide as an alternative source of Al2O3 is viable. The impurities contained in refractory bauxite contributed to the lower values of flexural strength found in compositions having refractory bauxite as a source of alumina. The compositions with reprecipitated aluminum hydroxide showed a high mechanical resistance at low sintering temperatures, while compositions with aluminum hydroxide obtained by the Bayer process achieved good results of mechanical strength in a wide temperature range.

- Abstract
Znalezione podczas prac wykopaliskowych fragmenty porcelany to najczęściej elementy serwisów herbacianych i kawowych (spodki, czarki, filiżanki) oraz obiadowych (talerze, miski, inne naczynia).

This doctoral thesis focuses on the study of ceramics and porcelain, specifically as collected, promoted, and put to both functional and representative use by the House of Austria from the reign of Charles V to the death of Charles II. The main aim of this research is to highlight the significance of the heritage of 16th and 17th century Spanish ceramics and to encourage the recognition of ceramics as opulent art of the highest calibre. In order to do so, we have proceeded to do a bibliographic review on different lines of work. We have also studied preserved historical documents originating from a range of sources, and located the ceramic pieces embodied in the paintings of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, which were preserved both in museums and private collections. This article examines the creation of three distinct porcelain cabinets, today preserved at Naples, Aranjuez and Madrid. These interiors, created in the second half of the 18th century for Charles Sebastian of Bourbon and Farnese (1716-1788), respectively his wife Maria Amelia of Saxony (1724-1760), are the only ones in the world to have been made entirely from this precious material. By highlighting the specificity of the Mediterranean context in which they were created, an important facet will be added to their history, allowing not only a better understanding of their successive creations, but also of the multifaceted influence they exerted on contemporary artistic production in Spain.
