Abstract

The effects of climate change depend on specific local circumstances, posing a challenge for worldwide research to comprehensively encompass the diverse impacts on various local social-ecological systems. Here we use a place-specific but cross-culturally comparable protocol to document climate change indicators and impacts as locally experienced and analyze their distribution. We collected first-hand data in 48 sites inhabited by Indigenous Peoples and local communities and covering all climate zones and nature-dependent livelihoods. We documented 1,661 site-agreed reports of change corresponding to 369 indicators. Reports of change vary according to climate zone and livelihood activity. We provide compelling evidence that climate change impacts on Indigenous Peoples and local communities are ongoing, tangible, widespread, and affect multiple elements of their social-ecological systems. Beyond potentially informing contextualized adaptation plans, our results show that local reports could help identify economic and non-economic loss and damage related to climate change impacts suffered by Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

Abstract

Global polls have shown that people in high-income countries generally report being more satisfied with their lives than people in low-income countries. The persistence of this correlation, and its similarity to correlations between income and life satisfaction within countries, could lead to the impression that high levels of life satisfaction can only be achieved in wealthy societies. However, global polls have typically overlooked small-scale, nonindustrialized societies, which can provide an alternative test of the consistency of this relationship. Here, we present results from a survey of 2,966 members of Indigenous Peoples and local communities among 19 globally distributed sites. We find that high average levels of life satisfaction, comparable to those of wealthy countries, are reported for numerous populations that have very low monetary incomes. Our results are consistent with the notion that human societies can support very satisfying lives for their members without necessarily requiring high degrees of monetary wealth.

Abstract

Progress toward the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is insufficient at a global scale. A thorough and interdisciplinary understanding of barriers and levers to sustainability, including synergies and trade-offs between SDGs, is utterly important but still limited. Ethnobiology is often advocated as a key discipline to address this research gap. We conducted a systematic literature review to explore (i) the visibility of ethnobiology within sustainability science, (ii) how ethnobiology understands the notion of sustainability, (iii) if ethnobiology literature on sustainability issues engages differently with nonacademic knowledge and people compared to other types of ethnobiology research, and (iv) which SDGs are addressed (explicitly or implicitly) by ethnobiology. Our study reveals a minimal overlap between sustainability science and ethnobiology literature. The articles reviewed never mention the SDGs explicitly, but often address them implicitly. Reviewed ethnobiological articles addressed themes of relevance to almost all SDGs, especially the linkages between SDGs 1–3 and 15, but always implicitly. Biodiversity's understanding (SDG 15) provides the basis for culture and Indigenous and local knowledge and ensures communities' food security (SDG 2), health and well-being (SDG 3), and prosperity (SDG 1). We found that ethnobiology does not examine sustainability through the lens of the global sustainability agenda, and that knowledge coproduction processes are rarely reported. While ethnobiology demonstrates its relevance to address SDGs and contribute to transformative change, this potential is not fully realized because of a persisting decoupling between place-based research and global sustainability frameworks. 9. How do young identify plants? Using the drawing method to explore early ethnobotanical knowledge in Madagascar.

Abstract

In small‐scale societies, people learn to identify plant species during childhood. Plant recognition is an important baseline knowledge, immediately useful to avoid intoxication risk due to wrong identification. Plant recognition is the basis of other ethnobotanical knowledge essential for safeguarding biocultural diversity. However, despite many studies on folk classification, we still have a narrow understanding of the criteria locally used for species identification; the gap being even larger regarding children's plant identification criteria.Here, we study the criteria used by Betsileo children and adolescents to identify wild edible plant (WEP) species using a child‐adapted method including drawings and follow‐up interviews. We worked with 80 teenagers (from 12 to 17 years old; 51 girls, and 29 boys).Our results suggest that teenagers use a large spectrum of visual criteria to identify plants and that these criteria match with botanical and ecological knowledge documented in the literature and herbarium vouchers. We found that 35% of the identification criteria used were non‐morphological (e.g. phenology, biotic interactions), suggesting deep ecological knowledge.On average, teenagers use more than nine distinct criteria per plant, which allows them to identify most plant species with a very high level of precision. The precision level of plant representation increases with age for boys, but remains constant for girls, suggesting different dynamics in plant identification knowledge acquisition.We also found that boys and girls use different identification criteria: girls focus on morphological criteria while boys also incorporate ecological criteria, such as landscape features and biotic interactions, in their spectrum of identification keys.Our results highlight the complexity of teenagers' plant knowledge and the importance of the ecological context and gender in plant identification's knowledge acquisition.This knowledge acquired very early in childhood, constitutes the foundation of future interactions with nature and should be at the heart of environmental humanities studies and knowledge co‐production projects to tackle socio‐ecological concerns. Hence, we urge further research to explore innovative methods that complement traditional ethnoecological tools and capture complex sensory aspects of folk children's taxonomy to better understand human‐plant interactions and knowledge. Through their long history of interaction with the environment, Indigenous Peoples and local communities have developed complex knowledge systems that allow them to detect impacts of climate change in the local environment. The study protocol presented here is designed 1) to inventory climate change impacts on the atmospheric, physical, and life systems based on local knowledge and 2) to test hypotheses on the global spatial, socioeconomic, and demographic distribution of reported impacts. The protocol has been developed within the framework of a project aiming to bring insights from Indigenous and local knowledge systems to climate research (https://licci.eu). Methods Data collection uses a mixed-method approach and relies on the collaboration of a team of 50 trained partners working in sites where people’s livelihood directly depend on nature. The data collection protocol consists of two steps. Step 1 includes the collection of secondary data (e.g., spatial and meteorological data) and site contextual information (e.g., village infrastructure, services). Step 1 also includes the use of 1) semi-structured interviews (n = 20-30/site) to document observations of environmental change and their drivers and 2) focus group discussions to identify consensus in the information gathered. Step 2 consist in the application of a household (n from 75 to 125) and individual survey (n from 125 to 175) using a standardized but locally adapted instrument. Abstract

Understanding local knowledge about wild edible plants (WEP) is essential for assessing plant services, reducing the risks of knowledge extinction, recognizing the rights of local communities, and improving biodiversity conservation efforts. However, the knowledge of specific groups such as women or children tends to be under-represented in local ecological knowledge (LEK) research. In this study, we explore how knowledge of WEP is distributed across gender and life stages (adults/children) among Betsileo people in the southern highlands of Madagascar. Using data from free listings with 42 adults and 40 children, gender-balanced, we show that knowledge on WEP differs widely across gender and life stage. In addition, we find that children have extended knowledge of WEP while reporting different species than adults. Women's knowledge specializes in herbaceous species (versus other plant life forms), while men's knowledge specializes in endemic species (versus native or introduced). Finally, we find that introduced species are more frequently cited by children, while adults cite more endemic species. We discuss the LEK differentiation mechanisms and the implications of acquiring life stage's knowledge in the highland landscapes of Madagascar. Given our findings, we highlight the importance of considering groups with under-represented knowledge repositories, such as children and women, into future research.

Abstract

The low natural regeneration of Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa) in the Madre de Dios region of Peru is a major concern for the conservation and sustainable use of this species which sustains one of the cornerstone non-timber forest product economies in Amazonia. Brazil nut is a gap-dependent long-lived pioneer species and has been shown previously to regenerate more effectively in fallows than in the mature forest. Aside from light and nutrient availability, recruitment success of the species might also be conditioned by negative conspecific distance-dependent processes as has been shown for a myriad of tropical tree species, but to date has not been studied in Brazil nut We measured Brazil nut recruitment in forty 150x10m2 transects (totaling 6 ha), proportionally laid out in mature forest and fallow land. We found a much higher likelihood of regeneration in fallow than in the mature forest, which was mainly due to more successful transitioning from seedling to sapling in fallows. Recruitment rates in fallow increased with the number of fire events occurred over the past 12 years, but this positive correlation was only observed up to three fire events. We observed conspecific negative distance-dependent recruitment of Brazil nut in the fallow but not mature forest. The absence of this pattern in the mature forest may be due to the lower light availability, combined with higher and more stable humidity levels in the mature forest compared to fallows, hampering the transition from seedling to sapling owing to pest and disease-driven mortality under these conditions. Furthermore, the sterilizing effect of fire in fallows might be an additional factor promoting the establishment of the relatively fire-resistant Brazil nut seedlings and saplings. Our findings suggest that a better management of fallow land and more controlled use of fire in land uses neighboring Brazil nut stands could be a cost-effective manner to increase recruitment rates.; La faible régénération naturelle de la noix du Brésil (Bertholletia excelsa) dans la région de Madre de Dios au Pérou est une préoccupation majeure pour la conservation et l'utilisation durable de cette espèce qui soutient l'une des économies de produits forestiers non ligneuses les plus importantes en Amazonie. La noix du Brésil est une espèce pionnière à longue durée de vie dépendante des chablis et qui, il a été monté, se régénérait plus efficacement dans les jachères que dans les forêts matures. Outre la disponibilité de la lumière et des nutriments, le succès du recrutement de l’espèce pourrait également être conditionné par des processus conspécifiques dépendant de la distance, comme cela a été démontré pour de nombreuses espèces d'arbres tropicaux, mais à ce jour n'a pas été étudié pour la noix du Brésil. Nous avons mesuré le recrutement de la noix du Brésil avec un total de quarante transects de 150x10m (totalisant 6 ha) disposés dans des forêts matures et des jachères. Nous avons trouvé une probabilité beaucoup plus élevée de régénération en jachère que dans les forêts matures, principalement en raison de la transition plus réussie du semis aux jeunes arbres dans les jachères. Les taux de recrutement en jachère semblent augmenter avec le nombre passager du feu survenu au cours des 12 dernières années, mais cette corrélation positive n'a été observée que jusqu'à trois cycles de brûlis. Nous avons observé une distance-dépendance négative pour le recrutement conspécifique (CNDD) en jachère, mais pas en forêt mature. L'absence de ce modèle dans la forêt mature peut être due à la faible disponibilité de la lumière, combinée à des niveaux d'humidité plus élevés et moins variables dans les forêts matures par rapport aux jachères, entravant la transition du semis aux jeunes arbres en raison des pressions plus fortes des herbivores, d'insectes et des agents pathogènes dans ces conditions. En outre, la stérilisation partielle et temporelle du feu dans les jachères pourrait être un facteur supplémentaire favorisant la régénération de la noix du Brésil. Nos résultats suggèrent qu'une meilleure gestion des jachères et une utilisation plus contrôlée du feu dans les peuplements des noyers du Brésil voisins pourraient être rentables pour augmenter les taux de recrutement.
