Abstract

Femtosecond transient soft X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) is a very promising technique that can be employed at X-ray Free Electron Lasers (FELs) to investigate out-of-equilibrium dynamics for material and energy research. Here we present a dedicated setup for soft X-rays available at the Spectroscopy & Coherent Scattering (SCS) instrument at the European X-ray Free Electron Laser (EuXFEL). It consists of a beam-splitting off-axis zone plate (BOZ) used in transmission to create three copies of the incoming beam, which are used to measure the transmitted intensity through the excited and unexcited sample, as well as to monitor the incoming intensity. Since these three intensity signals are detected shot-by-shot and simultaneously, this setup allows normalized shot-by-shot analysis of the transmission. For photon detection, the DSSC imaging detector, which is capable of recording up to 800 images at 4.5 MHz frame rate during the FEL burst, is employed and allows approaching the photon shot-noise limit. Abstract

The complex electronic structure of metallic ferromagnets is determined by a balance between exchange interaction, electron hopping leading to band formation, and local Coulomb repulsion. The interplay between the respective terms of the Hamiltonian is of fundamental interest, since it produces most, if not all, of the exotic phenomena observed in the solid state. By combining high energy and temporal resolution in femtosecond time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy with ab initio time-dependent density functional theory we analyze the electronic structure in fcc Ni on the time scale of these interactions in a pump-probe experiment. We distinguish transient broadening and energy shifts in the absorption spectra, which we demonstrate to be caused by electron repopulation and correlation-induced modifications of the electronic structure, respectively. Importantly, the theoretical description of this experimental result hence requires to take the local Coulomb interaction into account, revealing a temporal interplay between band formation, exchange interaction, and Coulomb repulsion.

Abstract

The advent of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) has revolutionized fundamental science, from atomic to condensed matter physics, from chemistry to biology, giving researchers access to X-rays with unprecedented brightness, coherence and pulse duration. All XFEL facilities built until recently provided X-ray pulses at a relatively low repetition rate, with limited data statistics. Here, results from the first megahertz-repetition-rate X-ray scattering experiments at the Spectroscopy and Coherent Scattering (SCS) instrument of the European XFEL are presented. The experimental capabilities that the SCS instrument offers, resulting from the operation at megahertz repetition rates and the availability of the novel DSSC 2D imaging detector, are illustrated. Time-resolved magnetic X-ray scattering and holographic imaging experiments in solid state samples were chosen as representative, providing an ideal test-bed for operation at megahertz rates. Our results are relevant and applicable to any other non-destructive XFEL experiments in the soft X-ray range.

9. Solution Map Analysis of a Multiscale Drift-Diffusion Model for Organic Solar Cells

Abstract

In this article we address the theoretical study of a multiscale drift-diffusion (DD) model for the description of photoconversion mechanisms in organic solar cells. The multiscale nature of the formulation is based on the co-presence of light absorption, conversion and diffusion phenomena that occur in the three-dimensional material bulk, of charge photoconversion phenomena that occur at the two-dimensional material interface separating acceptor and donor material phases, and of charge separation and subsequent charge transport in each three-dimensional material phase to device terminals that are driven by drift and diffusion electrical forces. The model accounts for the nonlinear interaction among four species: excitons, polarons, electrons and holes, and allows to quantitatively predict the electrical current collected at the device contacts of the cell. Existence and uniqueness of weak solutions of the DD system, as well as nonnegativity of all species concentrations, are proved in the stationary regime via a solution map that is a variant of the Gummel iteration commonly used in the treatment of the DD model for inorganic semiconductors. The results are established upon assuming suitable restrictions on the data and some regularity property on the mixed boundary value problem for the Poisson equation. The theoretical conclusions are numerically validated on the simulation of three-dimensional problems characterized by realistic values of the physical parameters.

Abstract

The European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL.EU) will provide every 0.1 s a train of 2700 spatially coherent ultrashort X-ray pulses at 4.5 MHz repetition rate. The Small Quantum Systems (SQS) instrument and the Spectroscopy and Coherent Scattering instrument (SCS) operate with soft X-rays between 0.5 keV - 6keV. The DEPFET Sensor with Signal Compression (DSSC) detector is being developed to meet the requirements set by these two XFEL.EU instruments. The DSSC imager is a 1 mega-pixel camera able to store up to 800 single-pulse images per train. The so-called ladder is the basic unit of the DSSC detector. It is the single unit out of sixteen identical-units composing the DSSC-megapixel camera, containing all representative electronic components of the full-size system and allows testing the full electronic chain. Each DSSC ladder has a focal plane sensor with 128 x 512 pixels. The read-out ASIC provides full-parallel readout of the sensor pixels. Every read-out channel contains an amplifier and an analog filter, an up-to 9 bit ADC and the digital memory. The ASIC amplifier have a double front-end to allow one to use either DEPFET sensors or Mini-SDD sensors. In the first case, the signal compression is a characteristic intrinsic of the sensor; in the second case, the compression is implemented at the first amplification stage. The goal of signal compression is to meet the requirement of single-photon detection capability and wide dynamic range. 11. Safety-Interlock System of the DSSC X-Ray Imager

Abstract

In this paper, the DSSC safety-interlock system is introduced. It is designed to keep the DSSC mega-pixel camera in a safe-state. The system is composed of four inter-communicating sub-systems referred here as a master SIB (safety-interlock board) and three partner SIBs. Each SIB monitors and processes 75 temperature sensors mainly located in the focal plane and also distributed inside the camera-head electronics. It monitors the signals from two pressure sensors, one humidity sensor as well as the connectivity to sixteen low-voltage and two high-voltage cables. The master SIB supervises the signals to and from external equipments like the cooling system, pressure gauge, power crates and status information from experimental environment. SIB is an 8-layer printed-circuit board (PCB) with a micro-controller sitting on top as its central processing unit. A decision-matrix software reads the sensor status continuously and determines whether the camera is in a safe state or not. All error and warnings flags are sent to the detector control software framework and the end user directly. These flags are also stored every 100 ms together with the image data. The full SIB sensor data is sent to the back end for offline analysis. A shutdown sequence is initiated by SIB in case of a critical failure. 12. Hierarchical Electrochemical Modeling and Simulation of Bio-Hybrid Interfaces

Abstract

In this article we propose and investigate a hierarchy of mathematical models based on partial differential equations (PDE) and ordinary differential equations (ODE) for the simulation of the biophysical phenomena occurring in the electrolyte fluid that connects a biological component (a single cell or a system of cells) and a solid-state device (a single silicon transistor or an array of transistors). The three members of the hierarchy, ordered by decreasing complexity, are: (i) a 3D Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) PDE system for ion concentrations and electric potential; (ii) a 2D reduced PNP system for the same dependent variables as in (i); (iii) a 2D area-contact PDE system for electric potential coupled with a system of ODEs for ion concentrations. The backward Euler method is adopted for temporal semi-discretization and a fixed-point iteration based on Gummel's map is used to decouple system equations. Spatial discretization is performed using piecewise linear triangular finite elements stabilized via edge-based exponential fitting. Extensively conducted simulation results are in excellent agreement with existing analytical solutions of the PNP problem in radial coordinates and experimental and simulated data using simplified lumped parameter models.

Abstract

In this article, we continue our mathematical study of organic solar cells (OSCs) and propose a two-scale (micro- and macro-scale) model of heterojunction OSCs with interface geometries characterized by an arbitrarily complex morphology. The microscale model consists of a system of partial and ordinary differential equations in an heterogeneous domain, that provides a full description of excitation/transport phenomena occurring in the bulk regions and dissociation/recombination processes occurring in a thin material slab across the interface. The macroscale model is obtained by a micro-to-macro scale transition that consists of averaging the mass balance equations in the normal direction across the interface thickness, giving rise to nonlinear transmission conditions that are parametrized by the interfacial width. These conditions account in a lumped manner for the volumetric dissociation/recombination phenomena occurring in the thin slab and depend locally on the electric field magnitude and orientation. Using the macroscale model in two spatial dimensions, device structures with complex interface morphologies, for which existing data are available, are numerically investigated showing that, if the electric field orientation relative to the interface is taken into due account, the device performance is determined not only by the total interface length but also by its shape.

Abstract

Since birth, infants discriminate the biological motion (BM) revealed by point‐light displays (PLDs). To date, no studies have explored whether newborns differentiate BM that approaches rather than withdraws from them. Yet, approach and withdrawal are two fundamental motivations in the socio‐emotional world, key to developing empathy and prosocial behavior. Through a looking‐behavior paradigm, we demonstrated that a few hours after birth, a human figure approaching attracted more visual attention than a human figure receding, showing that newborns are attuned to PLDs of others moving toward rather than walking away from them. Further, a withdrawing body appears to be less attractive than withdrawing scrambled points. Altogether, these observations support the existence of an early predisposition toward social closeness that might have its roots in an evolutionary perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The advent of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) has revolutionized fundamental science, from atomic to condensed matter physics, from chemistry to biology, giving researchers access to X-rays with unprecedented brightness, coherence, and pulse duration. All XFEL facilities built until recently provided X-ray pulses at a relatively low repetition rate, with limited data statistics. Here, we present the results from the first megahertz repetition rate X-ray scattering experiments at the Spectroscopy and Coherent Scattering (SCS) instrument of the European XFEL. We illustrate the experimental capabilities that the SCS instrument offers, resulting from the operation at MHz repetition rates and the availability of the novel DSSC 2D imaging detector. Time-resolved magnetic X-ray scattering and holographic imaging experiments in solid state samples were chosen as representative, providing an ideal test-bed for operation at megahertz rates. Abstract

Coffin‐Siris Syndrome (CSS) is a rare multi‐system dominant condition with a variable clinical presentation mainly characterized by hypoplasia/aplasia of the nail and/or distal phalanx of the fifth digit, coarse facies, hirsutism/hypertrichosis, developmental delay and intellectual disability of variable degree and growth impairment. Congenital anomalies may include cardiac, genitourinary and central nervous system malformations whereas congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is rarely reported. The genes usually involved in CSS pathogenesis are ARID1B (most frequently), SMARCA4, SMARCB1, ARID1A, SMARCE1, DPF2, and PHF6. Here, we present two cases of CSS presenting with CDH, for whom Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) identified two distinct de novo heterozygous causative variants, one in ARID1B (case 1) and one in SMARCA4 (case 2). Due to the rarity of CDH in CSS, in both cases the occurrence of CDH did not represent a predictive sign of CSS but, on the other hand, prompted genetic testing before (case 1) or independently (case 2) from the clinical hypothesis of CSS. DePMOS based Active Pixel Sensor (APS) matrix is a new detector concept for X-ray imaging and spectroscopy applications. This type of X-ray detector can provide excellent energy resolution and high-speed readout. Both these features and the advantage of random pixel accessibility can fulfill the requirements of new space applications, like the XEUS Wide Field Imager. In a matrix arrangement, each pixel must be read out by a time variant filter, so a new readout mechanism and a proper multi-channel integrated shaping amplifier are needed. To operate at the required fast processing time (e.g., 4 [micro]s per line) DePMOS transistor cannot be operated in the classical source follower configuration, because this results in a long settling time. So a new design for multi-channel readout of the DePMOS matrix has to be considered. We propose a new fast readout concept, which is based on the DePMOS drain current readout and processing. Abstract

In this work we demonstrate theoretically and experimentally the capability to reduce the readout noise of an optical and X-ray photon detector based on the semiconductor DEPFET device below a level of only [0.3e.sup.-] ENC (equivalent noise charge). The readout method used is called 'Repetitive Non Destructive Readout' (RNDR) and was realized by placing two single DEPFET-devices next to each other and by coupling their charge storing region by an additional gate. By transferring the stored charge from one DEPFET to the other and vice versa the same charge can be measured non-destructively and arbitrarily often. Taking the average value of a large number n of these measurements, the noise is reduced by 1/[square of (n)]. The main advantage of such a detector is to greatly reduce the contribution of the 1/f noise to the readout noise. The theoretically and experimentally achievable resolution for different operating parameters (leakage current, readout noise, number and duration of readouts) was investigated by Monte-Carlo simulations and verified on a real RNDR minimatrix (pixelarray). Single optical photon detection with high quantum efficiency and, even more fascinating, the possibility to distinguish between different numbers of photons, e.g., 100 from 101 are demonstrated in measurements. Abstract

Protein arginine methyltransferase 7 (PRMT7) pathogenetic variants have been associated with the human disorder of Short Stature, Brachydactyly, Intellectual Developmental Disability and Seizures syndrome (SBIDDS). Only 15 cases have been described in the literature. Here we report two female dizygotic twins with novel compound heterozygous deleterious variants of PRMT7and describe the associated endocrine manifestations and short-term response to recombinant growth hormone (rGH) treatment. They were born at 36 + 3 weeks from a dichorionic diamniotic twin pregnancy. Twin A was appropriate for gestational age while Twin B was small for gestational age. Whole exome sequencing analyses showed the same novel compound heterozygous genetic defects in the PRMT7gene (c.1220 G > A of maternal origin; c.1323 + 2 T > G of paternal origin, Fig. 1). Due to severe short stature and growth impairment, at six years of age, endocrine investigations were performed to rule out growth hormone (GH) deficiency, and revealed GH deficiency (GHD) in Twin A and an appropriate GH response in Twin B. Therefore, both started rGH, albeit at different dosages according to the underlying diagnosis. Both showed a satisfactory short-term response to treatment with height gain (∆HT) of +0.52 SDS (Twin A) and +0.88 SDS (Twin B) during the first year. In conclusion, our findings expand the knowledge about the endocrine manifestations associated with PRMT7pathogenetic variants, including GH deficiency and rGH response. Further studies are needed to investigate long-term outcomes and establish whether PRMT7genetic defects can be included among syndromic short stature treatable with rGH.
