Abstract

The International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) [1] was established in 2020 following the recommendations of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) and the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics-Accelerator R&D Roadmap by the Laboratory Directors Group [2], hereinafter referred to as the the European LDG roadmap. The Muon Collider Study (MuC) covers the accelerator complex, detectors and physics for a future muon collider. In 2023, European Commission support was obtained for a design study of a muon collider (MuCol) [3]. This project started on 1st March 2023, with work-packages aligned with the overall muon collider studies. In preparation of and during the 2021-22 U.S. Snowmass process, the muon collider project parameters, technical studies and physics performance studies were performed and presented in great detail. Recently, the P5 panel [4] in the U.S. recommended a muon collider R&D, proposed to join the IMCC and envisages that the U.S. should prepare to host a muon collider, calling this their "muon shot". In the past, the U.S. Muon Accelerator Programme (MAP) [5] has been instrumental in studies of concepts and technologies for a muon collider., Comment: This document summarises the International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) progress and status of the Muon Collider R&D programme

A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10~TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. Abstract

In the past decade, complex networks of light emitters are proposed as novel platforms for photonic circuits and lab-on-chip active devices. Lasing networks made by connected multiple gain components and graphs of nanoscale random lasers (RLs) obtained from complex meshes of polymeric nanofibers are successful prototypes. However, in the reported research, mainly collective emission from a whole network of resonators is investigated, and only in a few cases, the emission from single points showing, although homogeneous and broad, spatial emission. In all cases, simultaneous activation of the miniaturized lasers is observed. Here, differently, we realize heterogeneous random lasers made of ribbon-like and highly porous fibers with evident RL action from separated micrometric domains that alternatively switch on and off by tuning the pumping light intensity. We visualize this novel effect by building for the first time replica symmetry breaking (RSB) maps of the emitting fibers with 2 {\mu}m spatial resolution. In addition, we calculate the spatial correlations of the laser regions showing clearly an average extension of 50 {\mu}m. Abstract A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work.

11. Bayesian inference of an uncertain generalized diffusion operator

Abstract

This paper defines a novel Bayesian inverse problem to infer an infinite-dimensional uncertain operator appearing in a differential equation, whose action on an observable state variable affects its dynamics. Inference is made tractable by parametrizing the operator using its eigendecomposition. The plausibility of operator inference in the sparse data regime is explored in terms of an uncertain, generalized diffusion operator appearing in an evolution equation for a contaminant's transport through a heterogeneous porous medium. Sparse data are augmented with prior information through the imposition of deterministic constraints on the eigendecomposition and the use of qualitative information about the system in the definition of the prior distribution. Limited observations of the state variable's evolution are used as data for inference, and the dependence on the solution of the inverse problem is studied as a function of the frequency of observations, as well as on whether or not the data is collected as a spatial or time series.

Abstract

Combined dry-wet transient materials and devices are introduced, which are based on water-dissolvable dye-doped polymers layered onto non-polar cyclic hydrocarbon sublimating substrates. Light-emitting heterostructures showing amplified spontaneous emission are used as illumination sources for speckle-free, full-field imaging, and transient optical labels are realized that incorporate QR codes with stably encoded information. The transient behavior is also studied at the microscopic scale, highlighting the real time evolution of material domains in the sublimating compound. Abstract

The miniaturization of diagnostic devices that exploit optical detection schemes requires the design of light-sources combining small size, high performance for effective excitation of chromophores, and mechanical flexibility for easy coupling to components with complex and non-planar shapes. Here, ZnO nanowire-in-fiber hybrids with internal architectural order are introduced, exhibiting a combination of polarized stimulated emission, low propagation losses of light modes, and structural flexibility. Ultrafast transient absorption experiments on the electrospun material show optical gain which gives rise to amplified spontaneous emission, with threshold lower than the value found in films. Abstract

Fibrosis is shared in multiple diseases with progressive tissue stiffening, organ failure and limited therapeutic options. This unmet need is also due to the lack of adequate pre-clinical models to mimic fibrosis and to be challenged novel by anti-fibrotic therapeutic venues. Here using bioprinting, we designed a novel 3D model where normal human healthy fibroblasts have been encapsulated in type I collagen. After stimulation by Transforming Growth factor beta (TGFβ), embedded cells differentiated into myofibroblasts and enhanced the contractile activity, as confirmed by the high level of α − smooth muscle actin (αSMA) and F-actin expression. As functional assays, SEM analysis revealed that after TGFβ stimulus the 3D microarchitecture of the scaffold was dramatically remolded with an increased fibronectin deposition with an abnormal collagen fibrillar pattern. Picrius Sirius Red staining additionally revealed that TGFβ stimulation enhanced of two logarithm the collagen fibrils neoformation in comparison with control. These data indicate that by bioprinting technology, it is possible to generate a reproducible and functional 3D platform to mimic fibrosis as key tool for drug discovery and impacting on animal experimentation and reducing costs and time in addressing fibrosis.

Abstract

Photonic components responsive to external optical stimuli are attracting increasing interest, because their properties can be manipulated by light with fast switching times, high spatial definition, and potentially remote control. These aspects can be further enhanced by novel architectures, which have been recently enabled by the availability of 3D printing and additive manufacturing technologies. However, current methods are still limited to passive optical materials, whereas photo-responsive materials would require the development of 3D printing techniques able to preserve the optical properties of photoactive compounds and to achieve high spatial resolution to precisely control the propagation of light. Also, optical losses in 3D printed materials are an issue to be addressed. Abstract

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been attracting extraordinary attention for its intriguing optical, electronic and mechanical properties. Here we demonstrate hybrid, organic-inorganic light-emitting nanofibers based on MoS2 nanoparticle dopants obtained through a simple and inexpensive sonication process in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and successfully encapsulated in polymer filaments. Defectiveness is found to be kept low, and stoichiometry preserved, by the implemented, gentle exfoliation method that allows the MoS2 nanoparticles to be produced. So-achieved hybrid fibers are smooth, uniform, flawless, and exhibit bright and continuous light emission. Moreover, they show significant capability of waveguiding self-emitted light along their longitudinal axis. Abstract

Hybrid polymer-plasmonic nanostructures might combine high enhancement of localized fields from metal nanoparticles with light confinement and long-range transport in subwavelength dielectric structures. Here we report on the complex behavior of fluorophores coupling to Au nanoparticles within polymer nanowires, which features localized metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) with unique characteristics compared to conventional structures. The intensification effect when the particle is placed in the organic filaments is remarkably higher with respect to thin films of comparable thickness, thus highlighting a specific, nanowire-related enhancement of MEF effects. A dependence on the confinement volume in the dielectric nanowire is also evidenced, with MEF significantly increasing upon reducing the wire diameter. These findings are rationalized by finite element simulations, predicting a position-dependent enhancement of the quantum yield of fluorophores embedded in the fibers. Calculation of the ensemble-averaged fluorescence enhancement unveils the possibility of strongly enhancing the overall emission intensity for structures with size twice the diameter of the embedded metal particles. These new, hybrid fluorescent systems with localized enhanced emission, as well as the general Nanowire-Intensified MEF effect associated to them, are highly relevant for developing nanoscale light-emitting devices with high efficiency and inter-coupled through nanofiber networks, highly sensitive optical sensors, and novel laser architectures., Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures, Small (2018)

Abstract

A large aperture Nb 3 Sn dipole is proposed to replace the magnet assembly of EDIPO, which was irreversibly damaged in 2016. The goal is to generate a background field of 15 T at 4.2 K in a clear aperture of approximately 100×150 mm 2 and over a uniform length of 1000 mm in order to test superconducting cables for both fusion and high-energy physics applications. The magnet features a block-type coil design wound with wide Rutherford cable (two alternative coil cross sections are considered) and supported by a mechanical structure based on keys-and-bladders technology. In the end regions, the coils tilt up (flare) through a hard-way bend of the cables to provide room for the test well, following a layout already adopted in the LBNL HD2 and CERN-CEA FRESCA2 magnets. The two considered coil design alternatives aim at minimizing the mechanical stress in the coil windings. One coil pack design makes the use of two double pancake coils per pole, whereas the other alternative features three double pancakes per pole. Both design options are presented focusing on the results of numerical computations carried out with finite-element models to investigate peak stresses in the coils during room-temperature pre-loading, cool down, and powering.

Abstract

The mathematical models used to represent physical phenomena are generally known to be imperfect representations of reality. Model inadequacies arise for numerous reasons, such as incomplete knowledge of the phenomena or computational intractability of more accurate models. In such situations it is impractical or impossible to improve the model, but necessity requires its use to make predictions. With this in mind, it is important to represent the uncertainty that a model's inadequacy causes in its predictions, as neglecting to do so can cause overconfidence in its accuracy. A powerful approach to addressing model inadequacy leverages the composite nature of physical models by enriching a flawed embedded closure model with a stochastic error representation. This work outlines steps in the development of a stochastic operator as an inadequacy representation by establishing the framework for inferring an infinite-dimensional operator and by introducing a novel method for interrogating available high-fidelity models to learn about modeling error.

Abstract

The Corning Epic® label-free (ELF) system is an innovative technology widely used in drug discovery, immunotherapy, G-protein-associated studies, and biocompatibility tests. Here, we challenge the use of ELF to further investigate the biocompatibility of resins used in manufacturing of blood filters, a category of medical devices representing life-saving therapies for the increasing number of patients with kidney failure. The biocompatibility assays were carried out by developing a cell model aimed at mimicking the clinical use of the blood filters and complementing the existing cytotoxicity assay requested by ISO10993-5. Experiments were performed by putting fibroblasts in both direct contact with two types of selected resins, and indirect contact by means of homemade customized well inserts that were precisely designed and developed for this technology. For both types of contact, fibroblasts were cultured in medium and human plasma. ELF tests confirmed the biocompatibility of both resins, highlighting a statistically significant different biological behavior of a polyaromatic resin compared to control and ion-exchanged resin, when materials were in indirect contact and soaking with plasma. Overall, the ELF test is able to mimic clinical scenarios and represents a promising approach to investigate biocompatibility, showing peculiar biological behaviors and suggesting the activation of specific intracellular pathways.

Abstract

Advances in the performance of low- and high-temperature superconductors enable the development of advanced magnets for a range of applications, including tokamaks for fusion energy, dipoles, and quadrupoles for hadron colliders, and solenoids for nuclear magnetic resonance studies. The capability of testing prototype cables and insert coils at high field is critical to these developments. We present here the conceptual design of a test facility dipole with features suitable to support the advanced magnet development efforts of both Fusion and HEP communities. In particular, a background field of 15 T is provided over a minimum homogeneous length of 1000 mm, and the magnet clear bore of approximately 144 × 94 mm can accommodate large fusion conductors as well as prototype coils for high field dipoles, along with flexible cryogenic and mechanical provisions for sample characterization. Two technical solutions are considered. The first uses a forced flow cable-in-conduit conductor and follows the design developed by EFDA for the EDIPO magnet. The second uses a bath cooled Rutherford cable and follows a block-coil design similar to the CERN FRESCA2 dipole, and the LBNL HD and LD1 dipoles. Following a comparison between the two approaches, we present two designs for the Rutherford cable approach including performance objectives, key parameters, and preliminary magnetic, mechanical and quench protection analysis.

42. Extended Analysis of TF02 Feeder Performance and Risks During Operation in JT-60SA Tokamak

Abstract

The upgrade to JT-60SA tokamak (R = 3 m, a = 1.2 m) was conducted within a Europe-Japan collaboration agreement featuring the implementation of superconducting magnets. In 2021, the magnet system commissioning was initiated, undergoing cool-down and energization of the 18 Nb-Ti Toroidal Field (TF) coils (400 tonnes) up to full nominal current. TF energization was smoothly processed but it was observed during current load a higher outlet temperature increase of TF02 coil versus others, indicating a higher resistance in this coil circuit and therefore a possible risk in future operation. The present paper analyses the different risk factors that can impact the TF operation safety margins and their quantitative contribution. To this end on the one hand ad-hoc thermal & thermo-hydraulic models were developed by CEA and F4E to represent the TF02 whole circuit including feeder zone where high resistance is suspected to be located. The outcomes of those models on chosen TF and PF current scenarios including transient loads and their impact on temperature margin in risky zones such as terminal joint (TJ) are presented. On the another hand a 3D electrical circuit of TJ was modelled using TF cables tomography, giving a realistic quantitative insight into local current distribution, therefore on current sharing temperature. The analyses outcomes synthesis is depicted under strategic considerations and tentatively contributes to establishing guidelines for future operation scenarios in which magnets will undergo demanding conditions.

43. Finite Element Analysis of the Energized ITER TF Coil in Test Conditions

Abstract

The ITER magnet system comprises 18 superconducting Toroidal Field Coils (TFC) based on Nb3Sn conductor supplied with the operational nominal current of 68 kA to produce a toroidal magnetic field of 5.2 T at the plasma major radius R = 6.2 m. A Magnet Cold Test Bench (MCTB) to test the TFC at 4 K up to a current value of 68 kA is under construction at ITER Organization (IO) site. The foreseen test conditions are substantially different from those corresponding to the 18-coil operation as the coils will be tested individually in horizontal position and supported at a few locations along the case. On the one hand, the magnetic field distribution produced by one single coil yields a different pattern of Lorentz forces. On the other hand, the absence of case wedging results in a reduced structural stiffness of the analyzed system. Finite element analysis work on this subject has been reported in the past for the TF Winding Pack (WP) after impregnation without undergoing the enclosure in the case, showing that the TF WP could be tested in safe conditions at a reduced energization of 15 kA (20% of the nominal current). This work considers currents up to the nominal 68 kA and the TF case which provides additional stiffness to the coil. Prior to the energization load, the coil is subject to gravity and cooled down to 4 K.

44. ITER Pre-Compression Ring Tightening Analysis

Abstract

The Pre-Compression Ring (PCR) is an important component of ITER Magnet System. It is designed to generate a radial inward force on every Toroidal Field (TF) coil, putting in compression the shear keys, contrasting the bending of the inner leg and improving the stress distribution on the wedge surface. Stretching the PCR by tensioning 16 bolts on 4 counter flanges generates a total force of 47.8 MN on each coil. The application of such high preload, together with the large number of bolts to be tighten, the limited space available, and obviously the need of preserving the structural integrity of all the components, make this phase of the tokamak assembly far to be trivial. For these reasons, an in-depth analysis of the tightening procedure has been performed by means of FEM analysis, investigating the possible patterns and multi-step sequences to achieve the desired preload. The study led to a deep comprehension of the behavior of the system and permitted to identify and control the main critical aspects, i.e., the increase of stress in the PCR due to the ‘ripple’ and the variation of preload in some portion of the rings when the preload is applied in a different area, both due to the need of operating on a limited number of bolts at each time. The outcome of the investigation is the detailed definition of two multi-step tightening procedures suitable to be adopted for the assembly.

45. Thermo-Hydraulic Modeling of JT-60SA TF02 Coil and Feeder for First Operation Predictions

Abstract

During the commissioning phase of JT-60SA magnet system, which included the cool-down in 2020 and the energization of the 18 Toroidal Field (TF) coils up to a nominal current of 25.7 kA in 2021, the combined helium flow issued from TF02 coil and feeder outlet showed a higher temperature profile than the one of the other TF coils when energized, pointing to the presence of an extra joint resistance in the TF02 and associated feeder circuit. To analyze this temperature excursion and the potential associated risks, the TF02 hydraulic circuit and feeder have been modelled with the thermo-hydraulic CryoSoft suite in the framework of a collaboration between Fusion for Energy and CEA. This paper describes the different numerical models developed along with simplifying analytical strategies, comprising detailed THEA models of the TF02 feeder and a model of the TF02 hydraulic circuit in FLOWER. These models consider the variable thermal and hydraulic geometry along the feeder length, include static and transient heat loads from different sources, and account for the heat exchange between the feeder and the TF02 Lateral Pancake at the feeder Terminal Joint (TJ), thus enabling a detailed description of the helium temperature variations in the system. In addition to the static energization load, the discharge of the Equilibrium Field coils has been modelled and its impact on the helium temperature at the outlet and feeder TJ analyzed. Model results show that the temperature excursion due to a faulty joint in the feeder should not put at risk the operation of TF02 coil.

46. ITER TF Load Transfer and Precompression Assembly Process Development

Abstract

In the ITER magnetic system 18 Toroidal Field coils (TF coils, or TFC) must be assembled so that the Current Center Line (CCL) of the TF magnets is correctly positioned within its tight tolerances. There are two major processes that cause large deformation of the TF coils: the load transfer toward the gravity support, occurring when the temporary inboard vertical support is removed, and the centripetal displacement due to the Pre-Compression Ring (PCR) tensioning. For those processes, specific procedures and tools are being developed, investigating at the same time the proper method to verify the procedures. Monitoring deformations and forces during the application of huge loads is the key for guaranteeing CCL quality, construction schedule, and health & safety matter. As results of the investigation, a part of the components and tools for TF PCR pre-tensioning has been changed from baseline plan: manual tightening multi-jackbolt tensioners (MJT) have been replaced with hydraulic tools and dedicated nuts. Current procedures including the tools design, the FE simulations, and the monitoring system plans are presented in this paper.

48. Metabolic Profile Reflects Stages of Fibrosis in Patients with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Abstract

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide, with fibrosis stage being the main predictor for clinical outcomes. Here, we present the metabolic profile of NAFLD patients with regards to fibrosis progression. We included all consecutive new referrals for NAFLD services between 2011 and 2019. Demographic, anthropometric and clinical features and noninvasive markers of fibrosis were recorded at baseline and at follow-up. Significant and advanced fibrosis were defined using liver stiffness measurement (LSM) as LSM ≥ 8.1 kPa and LSM ≥ 12.1 kPa, respectively. Cirrhosis was diagnosed either histologically or clinically. Fast progressors of fibrosis were defined as those with delta stiffness ≥ 1.03 kPa/year (25% upper quartile of delta stiffness distribution). Targeted and untargeted metabolic profiles were analysed on fasting serum samples using Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). A total of 189 patients were included in the study; 111 (58.7%) underwent liver biopsy. Overall, 11.1% patients were diagnosed with cirrhosis, while 23.8% were classified as fast progressors. A combination of metabolites and lipoproteins could identify the fast fibrosis progressors (AUROC 0.788, 95% CI: 0.703–0.874, p < 0.001) and performed better than noninvasive markers. Specific metabolic profiles predict fibrosis progression in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Algorithms combining metabolites and lipids could be integrated in the risk-stratification of these patients.
