Abstract

We report on the volatile oil constituents as well as the insecticidal and antimicrobial profile of the leaf essential oil of Polyalthia longifolia (Sonn.)Thwaites (Annonaceae). Polyalthia oil extracted by hydrodistillation yielded 0.04 ml/100g of fresh leaves. Qualitative (GC/MS) and quantitative (GC) analyses showed that the oil contains longifolene (35.3%), allo-aromadendrene (20.0%), [alpha]-longipinene (13.1%), [alpha]-humulene (10.1%), [alpha]-pinene (2.6%), [alpha]-selinene (2.6%), motene (2.5%), [alpha]-copaene (2.3%) and 20 other trace constituents. Polyalthia oil and its formulation were investigated for larvicidal, repellency and knock-down activities against laboratory-reared larvae and adults of the yellow fever vector mosquito, Aedes aegpyti L. The larvicidal, mosquito repellency and knock-down (between 30 min and I h) properties of 250 ppm of the oil were similar to the effects of a reference product (Endosulfan[R]).The activities of the oil suggest that it may be useful in curbing mosquito bites and thereby prevent malaria infection.Tests on domestic pests revealed that the oil maintained comparable kill strength (I/knockdown time, p >0.05) as Basudine[TM] (diazinon) for termites (Macrotermes bellicosus) but showed higher kill strength (p Key words: Polyalthia longifolia, essential oil constituents, insecticidal activity, antimicrobial property

Abstract

Low-fiber meals enriched with fiber from soybeans or peas were fed to six healthy subjects and the postprandial effects on lipaemia and lipoproteins were observed. Fiber is known to have long term effects on lipid metabolism, and this study was intended to identify possible processes involved. Soybean fiber increased chylomicron triglyceride, and pea fiber had the most effect on lowering cholesterolaemia. Both fibers moderated the rise in chylomicron cholesterol and phospholipids.

Abstract

In order to study their effects on the bile secretion, cyclosporine and methylprednisolone were injected intravenously into rats at a dose of 10 mg/kg b.w. for 30 min. Methylprednisolone had no effect on bile secretion. Cyclosporine led to transient intrahepatic cholestasis characterized by decreased bile flow as well as a decrease of bile salts and cholesterol in bile. Phospholipid levels were not affected. Liver biopsy showed no particular anomaly. These findings suggest that the observed cholestatic reaction may be due to impairment of the metabolism of cholesterol into bile salts or of the conjugation of bile salts rather than to disturbances in bile secretion. After liver transplantation in humans, cholestasis associated with acute rejection or nonspecific cholestasis cannot be attributed directly to the effect of cyclosporine. Cholestasis can be offset by administering taurocholate at a dose of 10 mumol/min/kg b.w. in order to maintain bile salt and phospholipid levels high enough to ensure proper "vectorization" of cholesterol to bile.
