Background: Family resilience refers to a family's capacity to face and manage adversities, emerging as a stronger and more resourceful unit. A family system approach enlarges the lens to the broad relational network, identifying potential resources for resilience within the immediate and extended family. This approach emphasizes a family's innate ability to adapt in the face of adversities. Objective: This study aims to test the psychometric properties of the Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire (WFRQ) using a sample of Portuguese caregivers with children aged between 10 and 15 years. Method: A total of 267 caregivers of children aged 10 to 15 years completed a sociodemographic questionnaire and the WFRQ. Analyses were performed to evaluate the WFRQ's validity evidence based on the internal structure (i.e., dimensionality and reliability) and on its relationship to other variables. Results: The findings supported a 31‐item version of the WFRQ with one third‐order latent factor, three second‐order factors, and nine first‐order factors for the Portuguese population. The WFRQ exhibited satisfactory validity evidence based on the internal structure and relation to other variables. Conclusion: Overall, the results of this study demonstrate the suitability of the WFRQ as a holistic measure to gauge resilience at the family level, going beyond individual assessments. Environmental education would strongly benefit from a socioecological approach that encompasses the human-nature relationship in all its dimensions. Nature relatedness appears to be an essential trait to ensure effective approaches, promoting the development of pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors. but also, human well-being through nature-derived benefits. To our knowledge, there are no available instruments validated for the Portuguese population to assess nature connectedness. This study aims to fill this gap, by validating the short and full versions of the Nature Relatedness Scale for the Portuguese population. The translation and adaptation of the questionnaire comply with international guidelines in this field and validation was conducted with 456 Portuguese participants with a mean age of 32.95 (SD = 11.45, age range = 18–77) years, mostly female (n = 328; 71.9%). Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the original three-factor latent structure of the full Nature Relatedness Scale, and the short version of the instrument with six items, obtained an adequate fit. The biological profile estimation is the first step toward positive identification. However, it is not always possible to access a complete and well-preserved skeleton due to postmortem damage and taphonomic changes. As such, there is a need to develop new alternatives to analyze different bones of the human skeleton. The present study aims to analyze the patellar osteometry, with attention to its degree of sexual dimorphism, to establish a simple method for estimating sex in Portuguese adults. Six measurements were taken from 222 patella pairs, including 117 females and 105 males from the XXI Century Identified Skeleton Collection of the University of Coimbra. Subsequently, this method was validated in a different sample of 50 individuals equally representing both sexes. Maximum height stands out with a 77.0% of correct sex estimation, reaching 98.0% when applied to the new sample. The linear discriminant function analysis containing all the six variables showed the best results, with 80.2% of correct classification after cross-validation and 96.0% when applied to the independent sample. The overweight represents a serious public health problem in Portugal, with a prevalence that exceeds 50%. Obesity-related diseases constitute the health system's main causes of death and economic issues. Despite this, there is no consensus on the relationship between the Body Mass Index (BMI) and the risk of early mortality. In this context, assessing the impact of the average BMI on life expectancy in Portugal is important. A retrospective cross-sectional observational study was carried out using an Autoregressive Distributed Lag model. The dependent variable is life expectancy at birth, expressed in the total years obtained from the World Development Indicators (WDI). The independent variables are: (i) the average BMI of the population (calculated based on the average male and female BMI obtained from Our World in Data); and (ii) the total population obtained from the WDI. The population's mean BMI variable limited the study's time horizon, comprising annual statistical data from 1975 to 2016. The increase in BMI negatively affects the life expectancy of the Portuguese population in the short term. A 1% variation in BMI reflects a 1.98% reduction in life expectancy. The result was statistically significant at 1%, and the p-value was 0.0001. In the long term, there was no statistically significant effect of the mean BMI on the population's life expectancy. Also, in the long term, population growth has a positive and statistically significant effect on life expectancy. Although there is no consensus in the literature that BMI is associated with increased mortality, the results obtained through this model captured this trend in Portugal in the short term. Therefore, promoting life expectancy by improving the Portuguese's health and quality of life is necessary. Background: Loneliness is a public health problem that affects many older adults. The subjective nature of loneliness challenges its assessment. Thus, assessing loneliness with valid and reliable instruments is crucial to characterizing the phenomenon and planning adequate interventions. Summary: This study mapped the instruments validated for the Portuguese older population that assess loneliness. A scoping review was performed. The search for studies was carried out in SciELO, PsycInfo, Scopus, MEDLINE, MedicLatina, Nursing & Allied Health Collection: Comprehensive, CINAHL, and Open Access Scientific Repositories of Portugal. The findings showed three instruments validated for the Portuguese older population: ULS-16, ULS-6, and SELSA-S. Key Messages: Future testing of those instruments is required to update and accumulate psychometric evidence. In addition, it is important to translate and validate other instruments to the Portuguese older adults population, namely de Jong Gierveld and UCLA-R (most used internationally), as well as the ALONE scale (new and brief).

We repeated a Portuguese study, 5 months after a first evaluation, to observe any change in the average levels of trust of professional groups during the COVID-19 pandemic. From our sample of the Portuguese population, 1455 completed the questionnaire from June through September 2020, and 1156 during 2 months, February and March 2021. We found a trend toward higher trust of medical doctors, nurses, and researchers. Analysis of changes between the two pandemic periods (first and second lockdown) showed a statistically significant increase in trust in nurses (t = − 2.01; p = 0.04) and researchers (t = − 2.40; p = 0.02), and the opposite trend for journalists and politicians. The E-Work Life Scale (EWLS), developed by Grant et al. (2019), is an instrument used to assess the quality of life when teleworking, regarding the interference between work and personal life domains, perceptions of productivity and effectiveness, flexibility, and organizational trust. This research aims to present the validation of the EWLS to the Portuguese population, through two different studies. The goal of the first study was to explore the factor structure of the scale through exploratory factor analysis (N = 207 teleworkers). The second study (N = 272) was intended to validate the scale factor structure and analyze its convergent validity, discriminant validity, and criterion validity. The findings from both studies showed that the scale had strong reliability, and a consistent factor structure, and demonstrated convergent, discriminant, and criterion validity. The revised version of Cloninger’s Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI-R) is a self-report measure assessing the four Temperament dimensions and the three Character dimensions described by the psychobiological model of personality. To understand whether, and how, the personality characteristics of specific subpopulations or individuals deviate from ‘normality’, it is essential to have reliable normative data from a reference population. The objective of this study was to describe the normative data of the TCI-R in the adult Portuguese population. The normative data was based on a large (n = 2442) sample obtained via stratified sampling. We summarize TCI-R scale and subscale scores for the whole sample, and explore differences between men and women, and between groups of different ages. We also provide tables of norms (percentiles). This article provides a relevant contribution to psychological assessment in Portugal, by presenting normative data for the TCI-R for the Portuguese population, which are crucial for research, evaluation, and intervention involving Portuguese individuals. Currently, the gold standard measure to assess loneliness is the University of California, Los Angeles Loneliness scale version 3 (UCLA v3). Objective. The aim of this study was to analyze the psychometric properties of UCLA v3 for the European Portuguese population. Method: A sample of 282 participants was surveyed in Portugal. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) supported a model portraying a global loneliness bifactor solution for positive and negative wording items, which achieved optimal fitness. Multi-group CFA indicates scalar and metric invariance across gender. Loneliness test scores (global score, positive items and negative items) correlated with well-established mental health indicators such as psychological stress, depressive and anxiety symptomatology, or psychological inflexibility. Internal consistency of the loneliness test scores was optimal for the global measure (α = .91; ω = .91) as well as for the positive (α = .87; ω = .87) and the negative factors (α = .86; ω = .88). Conclusions: Results support UCLA v3 as a reliable and valid measure of loneliness for future research studies interested in examining the prevalence of loneliness and impact in health in the context of Covid-19 in the Portuguese population and as a health indicator in health promotion and clinical interventions. This study aimed to evaluate the risk of the Portuguese population's exposure to six non-nutritive intense sweeteners (NNIS) and their main associated factors. A tiered approach was used to estimate the usual exposure to the NNIS obtained from two 1-day food diaries among children and two 24-hour recalls among adults in the Portuguese national dietary survey (IAN-AF 2015–2016; age: 3–84 y; n = 5005). The tiers considered were the following: Tier 2.1 represents the most conservative tier, in which all foods reported were matched with the respective maximum permitted levels (MPLs); in Tier 2.2, the MPLs were attributed only to the foods for which the brand's label information identified the presence of an added NNIS; finally, Tier 3 was identical to Tier 2.2, but analytical NNIS occurrence data were used, instead of MPLs. The usual exposure of the Portuguese population to each NNIS was very low in all tiers across all age groups, as was the estimated prevalence of exposure above the acceptable daily intake. Soft drinks were the main source of exposure for most sweeteners, and acesulfame K and aspartame were the most consumed NNIS. The odds of exposure to at least one NNIS were higher in more highly educated adults and elderly, obese elderly, women, and people with lower healthy diet scores. The estimated risk of exceeding the safety levels of NNIS intake was very low in all evaluated population groups, even when considering the most conservative approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The goal of the present study was to measure COVID-19 social representation and to characterize attitudes and knowledge about the virus SARS-CoV-2. With an exploratory nature, it used a non-probabilistic sample of 297 Portuguese adults. To measure COVID-19 social representation, we used a free evocation task; attitudes were assessed by 20-item questionnaires divided into cognitive, affective and behavioural dimensions; knowledge was assessed by a true or false test based upon general information made available by DGS [Portuguese health general directorate]. Results suggest participants have little belief that they could be infected, have the disease or even be preoccupied about it. Concerning social representation, results suggest the existence of two different groups of participants, one with a more favourable attitude towards COVID-19 and another with a less favourable attitude. Objective: Psychometric properties of Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices in a Portuguese community sample were investigated. Method: The sample consists of 522 people (250 men and 272 women), aged between 12 and 95 years. All participants completed an informed consent form and a battery of neuropsychological tests, including Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices (RSPM), Rey 15-Item Memory Test, Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, and Rey Complex Figure Test. Results: The average in RSPM was 41.18 (SD = 12.03). The results showed that all sociodemographic variables (age, sex, education, profession, regions, and place of residence) significantly influenced RSPM scores. The reliability and temporal stability of RSPM were adequate. Conclusions: This study suggests that RSPM is an instrument with potential for use among the Portuguese population.

Abstract Background The impairment of the hepatic enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) causes elevation of phenylalanine levels in blood and other body fluids resulting in the most common inborn error of amino acid metabolism (phenylketonuria). Persistently high levels of phenylalanine lead to irreversible damage to the nervous system. Therefore, early diagnosis of the affected individuals is important, as it can prevent clinical manifestations of the disease. Methods In this report, the biochemical and genetic findings performed in 223 patients diagnosed through the Portuguese Neonatal Screening Program (PNSP) are presented. Results Overall, the results show that a high overlap exists between different types of variants and phenylalanine levels. Molecular analyses reveal a wide mutational spectrum in our population with a total of 56 previously reported variants, most of them found in compound heterozygosity (74% of the patients). Intragenic polymorphic markers were used to assess the haplotypic structure of mutated chromosomes for the most frequent variants found in homozygosity in our population (p.Ile65Thr, p.Arg158Gln, p.Leu249Phe, p.Arg261Gln, p.Val388Met, and c.1066‐11G>A). Conclusion Our data reveal high heterogeneity at the biochemical and molecular levels and are expected to provide a better understanding of the molecular basis of this disease and to provide clues to elucidate genotype–phenotype correlations.

This study aims to present the psychometric properties of the Brief Sensation Seeking Scale in a Portuguese sample. Three studies were performed: the first study provides psychometric evidence pertaining to its reliability and factor structure, an analysis of the measurement invariance of the BSSS across gender and age, and an examination of the differences scores on the scale regarding gender, age and marital status (n = 526); the second study consists of an assessment of convergent, discriminant and postdictive validity (n = 240); and the third study includes a test-retest of the BSSS (n = 72). A four-factor model yielded the best fit to the data with good reliability and validity. The scale showed non-invariance between genders and between ages, which makes it less generalizable and susceptible to different populations. Convergent validity with the variables risk taking, need for arousal and extraversion, and discriminant validity between neuroticism, agreeableness and conscientiousness, were demonstrated. The scale presents good temporal stability and represent an important tool for psychological assessment of personality and behavior, and as a predictor of safety performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Self-efficacy is an important factor in the acquisition of self-management skills in patients with chronic diseases. The present study provides a translation and cultural adaptation for the Portuguese population, as well as psychometric properties, of the Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. As a first stage, a translation and cultural adaptation were conducted. After preparation, a final version was applied initially to a sample of 30 participants with chronic disease in two phases, with a one-week gap between phases, to assess teste retest reliability. Subsequently, a sample of 217 participants with chronic di - sease, mean age 42.8 (10.7) years, participated in the study. Participants were supposed to be over the age of 18 and with at least one clinically diagnosed chronic disease. The questionnaire was applied electronically. Results: The results showed a good test retest reliability (ICC of 0.83, 95% CI: 0.65 - 0.92). Internal consistency met the criterion for a reliable measure (global Cronbach's alpha of 0.95). Item-total correlations of all items were above 0.30. A correlation matrix was considered favorable (KMO = 0.90; Bartlett's sphericity test = 1399.090, p <0.01). The results confirmed the permanence of the 6 items, as in the original scale. Conclusions: A Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale is a reliable and valid instrument to assess the patients' self-efficacy for managing chro nic diseases in Portuguese, enabling its use in clinical practice and in future studies. Accurate sex prediction is a key step in creating a postmortem forensic profile as it excludes approximately half the population. It is our goal to develop a predictive model to establish sex through teeth mesiodistal widths in a Portuguese population. The pretreatment dental casts of 168 of Portuguese orthodontics subjects (59 males and 109 females) were included. Mesiodistal widths from right first molar to left first molar were measured on each pretreatment cast to the nearest 0.01 mm using a digital caliper. Overall, the mesiodistal widths of the upper and lower canines, premolars, and molars were found to be significantly different between females and males. Conversely, no significant differences between sexes were identified for incisors. A multivariate logistic regression model for sex prediction was developed and the teeth included in the final reduced model being the upper left canine (2.3), the lower right lateral incisor (4.2) and the lower right canine (4.3). There is a prevalence of sexual dimorphism in all teeth except the incisors. The canines present the most noticeable difference between sexes. The presented sex determination predictive model exhibits an overall correct classification of 75%, outperforming all available models for this purpose and therefore is a potential tool for forensic analysis in this population. This article explores the psychometric validation of an Intercultural Communication Competence (ICC) scale. Three studies were performed: (1) psychometric evidence pertaining to the scale's reliability and factor structure and an analysis of the measurement invariance; (2) assessment of convergent and predictive validity; and (3) analyzes the association between ICC and affective and cognitive dimensions of cultural empathy. A three-factor model with eight items yielded the best fit to the data. The scale showed non-invariance between genders, but proved to be a predictor of intercultural contact. Abstract Background Despite the importance of immigrant population in Portugal few studies have analyzed the patterns of overweight/obesity in this subpopulation. The aims of this study are: (i) describe and compare the prevalence of overweight between immigrants and natives in Portugal; (ii) analyze the association between length of residence and overweight among adult immigrants in Portugal. Methods A cross-sectional study (2005–2006) in a representative sample of the Portuguese population from national territory, including the Autonomous Regions of Azores and Madeira. The final sample comprised 31,685 adult participants (≥19 years old), of whom 4.6% were immigrants. Country of birth was used to determine immigrant condition. Logistic regressions were conducted to investigate the association between overweight (dependent variable) and length of residence (exposure), adjusting for all covariates in the study. A 5% confidence level and 95% CI were considered. Results The percentage of immigrants that are overweight [44.9% (95% CI: 42.3; 47.5)] was lower than for natives [52.8% (95% CI: 52.2; 53.4)]. The migrant condition, after adjusted for sociodemographic variables, was not associated with overweight [OR 1.004 (95% CI: 0.998; 1.010)]. Among immigrants, being women [OR 0.585 (95% CI: 0.583; 0.587)], not married [OR 0.784 (95% CI: 0.781; 0.787)] and with a higher education [OR 0.481 (95% CI: 0.478; 0.483)], are probably protective factors of being overweight. The use of cognitive enhancement has been rising in recent years. While this increase is well-documented, most existing research primarily focuses on university students. This study aimed to assess the types and frequencies of cognitive enhancer use in the Portuguese population, the cognitive functions that participants intended to enhance, and the specific contexts of usage. A total of 623 Portuguese people completed an online survey distributed through social media and sent by web mailing. The survey focused on the frequency of cognitive enhancer use, the cognitive functions participants aimed to enhance, and the contexts in which enhancers were used. Except for electronic devices, the most common frequency of use for all cognitive enhancers was never. Among the cognitive enhancers that were used, the most prevalent were electronic devices, coffee, and sleep hygiene. There is a negative correlation between the participants' age and sleep hygiene and specific music for cognitive enhancement. Female participants were more likely to use natural products, specific foods, and supplements, while male participants were more likely to use physical activity and energy drinks. The most frequently enhanced cognitive function was attention, followed by memory. University students tended to enhance attention more frequently than employed participants and work-study participants. During more demanding periods of work or study, 21.1 % of participants always used strategies to enhance cognition, 24.6 % used them often, and 22.5 % never used them. Overall, the use of cognitive enhancement strategies in Portugal seems to be limited. However, achieving a more accurate quantification requires employing representative sampling techniques within the broader population. Among the various strategies used, non-pharmacological enhancers predominate. Coffee stands out as one of the more frequently used strategies. The present study aims to characterize football fans and non-fans and to compare their psychopathological symptoms with the latest normative values for the Portuguese population from Canavarro in 2007. Results showed that football fans and non-fans are mostly male, have an affective relationship, are childless, have secondary education or a high degree, and are employed or students; fans are more likely to be male, dating, unemployed, to have elementary education and be younger than non-fans. Football fans present significantly higher psychopathological symptoms than non-fans in somatization, interpersonal sensitivity, anxiety, hostility, paranoid ideation and psychoticism and all psychopathological indexes. Football fans present values very close to those of populations with emotional distress in hostility and are above the mean of the general population in obsession–compulsion, hostility, paranoid ideation and psychoticism.

Aims: Clinical risk factors and bone mineral densitometry underestimate low-energy fracture (LEF) risk in people with diabetes. We aim to estimate the prevalence of LEF in diabetics, compare with nondiabetics; and evaluate possible predictors of LEF in people with diabetes.Methods: Cross-sectional, population-based study in Portuguese subjects over 40 years-old. Estimates computed as weighted proportions/means, considering sample design. Multivariate logistic regression models to evaluate the association of diabetes and LEF; and predictors of LEF in diabetics.Results: 7675 subjects were analysed, of which 1173 reported diabetes. Diabetics were older (mean age 66.0 ± 11.49y), more frequently reported osteoporosis and falls in the previous 12 months (32.4% vs. 22.9%). Prevalence of self-reported LEF was 16.2% (95% CI:13.68-19.13) among diabetics (vs. 13.3%, 95% CI:12.14-14.57, in nondiabetics); OR for the association diabetes and LEF:1.26, 95% CI:1.01-1.58, p = 0.045 (in women, adjusted OR:1.41, 95% CI:1.05-1.89, p = 0.02). Thirty percent of diabetics reported at least one major LEF and 70% in other sites. In diabetics, LEF was independently associated with self-reported osteoporosis and falls in the previous 12 months.Conclusion: People with diabetes reported more falls and had higher prevalence of self-reported LEF. In forensic anthropology, the age-at-death of an adult individual is one of the most complex parameters of the biological profile to estimate. The present study aims to evaluate the reliability of the Calce (2012) method for the estimation of age-at-death through acetabulum changes in a sample of Portuguese origin. This method consists of the global analysis of acetabular age-related morphology with focus on three specific traits, namely the acetabular groove, the osteophyte development of the acetabular rim, and the apex growth. This method was tested in 120 individuals sampled from the Twenty-first Century Identified Skeletal Collection (University of Coimbra, Portugal). The test sample is composed of 60 males and 60 females, aged between 25 and 99 years, with well-preserved os coxae. The results showed that only 60% of the individuals were correctly attributed to the age group defined by the technique. The comparison with previous studies in other populations shows significant inter-population differences in the relationship between the acetabulum variables used by Calce and age-at-death. The obtained results advise caution in the use of the Calce (2012) method to estimate the age-at-death of unidentified skeletons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary Obesity is recognised as a serious public health issue, due to its associated morbidity and mortality. This study aimed at estimating the prevalence of overweight and obesity in the Portuguese population through direct measurements obtained by the 1st National Health Examination Survey (INSEF 2015) and to identify its associated sociodemographic factors. INSEF was a nationally representative cross-sectional prevalence study conducted on 4911 Portuguese adults aged 25–74 years, in 2015. Height and weight were measured according to the European Health Examination Survey procedures. Poisson regression was used to estimate the adjusted prevalence ratios of overweight and obesity according to age, marital status, occupational activity, education, urbanization of living area and smoking status. Overall prevalences of overweight and obesity were 39.1% and 28.6%, respectively. The prevalence of overweight was higher among men (45.5% vs 33.2%) while the prevalence of obesity was higher among women (32% vs 25%). The sociodemographic factors associated with overweight and obesity were age, marital status and education. Smoking status was associated with overweight and obesity but only in women. INSEF suggests that a high prevalences of overweight and obesity are found in older individuals, married, with lower education levels and non-smoking women.
