The Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) channel for the formation of binary black hole (BBH) mergers has been previously studied as a potential formation channel for the merging compact binaries observed by the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA (LVK) scientific collaboration. The first two papers in this series explored the McFACTS code for the evolution of black hole orbits in AGN accretion disks for individual galaxy models and described the characteristics of predicted BBH populations in realizations of those models (such as the correlation between mass ratio and aligned spin). In this work, we explore the impact of the properties of AGN host galaxies and assume an AGN lifetime and cosmological model for the density of AGN in a universe like our own. By sampling from an inferred population of AGN, we marginalize over galaxy mass to predict a population of BBH mergers observable by modern ground-based gravitational wave observatories. We find that for reasonable assumptions, AGN disk environments may account for massive BBH mergers such as GW190521 and GW190929_012149. We find that the majority of observable BBH mergers from our simulation are expected to originate in galaxies with a super-massive black hole between $10^{7}M_{\odot}$ and $10^{9.4}M_{\odot}$. We also find that if hierarchical mergers from AGN disks account for a substantial part of the LVK population, our current models require an AGN lifetime of 0.5 to 2.5 Myr., Comment: Submitting to ApJ

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are a promising source of the binary black hole (BBH) mergers observed in gravitational waves with LIGO-Virgo-Kagra (LVK). Constraining the AGN channel allows us to limit AGN parameter space (disk density, size, average lifetime) and nuclear star cluster (NSC) parameter space. Constraints on AGN and NSCs have implications for $\Lambda$CDM models of AGN feedback and models of AGN-driven SMBH merger and growth. Here we present several qualitative studies of the AGN channel using new public, open-source, fast, reproducible code \texttt{McFACTS}\footnote{https://github.com/mcfacts}:Monte Carlo for AGN channel Testing \& Simulation. We demonstrate several important features for testing the AGN channel, including: i) growth to large mass IMBH is helped by the presence of migration traps or disk boundaries, ii) flat BH initial mass functions highlight hierarchical merger features in the mass spectrum, iii) high rates of dynamical encounters strongly inhibit BBH formation and merger at migration traps, iv) the ($q,\chi_{\rm eff}$) anti-correlation is a strong test of the bias to prograde mergers in the AGN channel, v) spheroid encounters can drive a fraction of mergers with high in-plane spin components ($\chi_{\rm p}$), vi) a high rate of extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs) are driven by an initial population of embedded retrograde BH, vii) Both LVK and LISA are powerful probes of models of AGN disks and their embedded populations., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, 1 table, ApJ (submitted)

We carried out long-term monitoring of the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA binary black hole (BBH) merger candidate S230922g in search of electromagnetic emission from the interaction of the merger remnant with an embedding active galactic nuclei (AGN) accretion disk. Using a dataset primarily composed of wide-field imaging from the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) and supplemented by additional photometric and spectroscopic resources, we searched ~ 70% of the sky area probability for transient phenomena, and discovered 6 counterpart candidates. One especially promising candidate - AT 2023aagj - exhibited temporally varying asymmetric components in spectral broad line regions, a feature potentially indicative of an off-center event such as a BBH merger. This represents the first live search and multiwavelength, photometric, and spectroscopic monitoring of a GW BBH optical counterpart candidate in the disk of an AGN., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures. We present an updated ephemeris and physical parameters for the exoplanet WASP-77 A b. In this effort, we combine 64 ground- and space-based transit observations, 6 space-based eclipse observations, and 32 radial velocity observations to produce the most precise orbital solution to date for this target, aiding in the planning of James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and Ariel observations and atmospheric studies. We report a new orbital period of 1.360029395 +- 5.7e-8 days, a new mid-transit time of 2459957.337860 +- 4.3e-5 BJDTDB (Barycentric Julian Date in the Barycentric Dynamical Time scale; arXiv:1005.4415) and a new mid-eclipse time of 2459956.658192 +- 6.7e-5 BJDTDB. Furthermore, the methods presented in this study reduce the uncertainties in the planet mass to 1.6654 +- 4.5e-3 Mjup and orbital period to 1.360029395 +- 5.7e-8 days by factors of 15.1 and 10.9, respectively. Through a joint fit analysis comparison of transit data taken by space-based and citizen science-led initiatives, our study demonstrates the power of including data collected by citizen scientists compared to a fit of the space-based data alone. Additionally, by including a vast array of citizen science data from ExoClock, Exoplanet Transit Database (ETD), and Exoplanet Watch, we can increase our observational baseline and thus acquire better constraints on the forward propagation of our ephemeris than what is achievable with TESS data alone., Comment: Updated a co-author name. Pr-containing perovskite cobaltites exhibit unusual valence transitions, coupled to coincident structural, spin-state, and metal-insulator transitions. Heteroepitaxial strain was recently used to control these phenomena in the model (Pr$_{1-y}$Y$_y$)$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$CoO$_{3-\delta}$ system, stabilizing a nonmagnetic insulating phase under compression (with a room-temperature valence/spin-state/metal-insulator transition) and a ferromagnetic metallic phase under tension, thus exposing a potential spin-state quantum critical point. The latter has been proposed in cobaltites and can be probed in this system as a function of a disorder-free variable (strain). We study this here via thickness-dependent strain relaxation in compressive SrLaAlO$_4$(001)/(Pr$_{0.85}$Y$_{0.15}$)$_{0.70}$Ca$_{0.30}$CoO$_{3-\delta}$ epitaxial thin films to quasi-continuously probe structural, electronic, and magnetic behaviors across the nonmagnetic-insulator/ferromagnetic-metal boundary. High-resolution X-ray diffraction, electronic transport, magnetometry, polarized neutron reflectometry, and temperature-dependent magnetic force microscopy provide a detailed picture, including abundant evidence of temperature- and strain-dependent phase coexistence. This indicates a first-order phase transition as opposed to spin-state quantum-critical behavior, which we discuss theoretically via a phenomenological Landau model for coupled spin-state and magnetic phase transitions., Comment: main text + supplementary material

Predicting the behavior of real-time traffic (e.g., VoIP) in mobility scenarios could help the operators to better plan their network infrastructures and to optimize the allocation of resources. Accordingly, in this work the authors propose a forecasting analysis of crucial QoS/QoE descriptors (some of which neglected in the technical literature) of VoIP traffic in a real mobile environment. The problem is formulated in terms of a multivariate time series analysis. Such a formalization allows to discover and model the temporal relationships among various descriptors and to forecast their behaviors for future periods. Techniques such as Vector Autoregressive models and machine learning (deep-based and tree-based) approaches are employed and compared in terms of performance and time complexity, by reframing the multivariate time series problem into a supervised learning one. Moreover, a series of auxiliary analyses (stationarity, orthogonal impulse responses, etc.) are performed to discover the analytical structure of the time series and to provide deep insights about their relationships. Solid-state control of the thermal conductivity of materials is of exceptional interest for novel devices such as thermal diodes and switches. Here, we demonstrate the ability to continuously tune the thermal conductivity of nanoscale films of $\rm La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}$ (LSCO) by a factor of over 5, via a room-temperature electrolyte-gate-induced non-volatile topotactic phase transformation from perovskite (with $\delta \approx 0.1$) to an oxygen-vacancy-ordered brownmillerite phase (with $\delta=0.5$), accompanied by a metal-insulator transition. Combining time-domain thermoreflectance and electronic transport measurements, model analyses based on molecular dynamics and Boltzmann transport, and structural characterization by X-ray diffraction, we uncover and deconvolve the effects of these transitions on heat carriers, including electrons and lattice vibrations. The wide-range continuous tunability of LSCO thermal conductivity enabled by low-voltage (below 4 V) room-temperature electrolyte gating opens the door to non-volatile dynamic control of thermal transport in perovskite-based functional materials, for thermal regulation and management in device applications.

The transition of many educational activities from in-presence to online, due to the Covid-19 emergency, has caused various difficulties to students, especially with regards to maintaining concentration. Even and especially in online mode, it is thus important to pay attention to the interaction with participants. In this context, the Department of Mathematics and Physics of Roma Tre University has proposed a series of activities dedicated to schools that have proven to be able to guarantee the engagement of the participants, also thanks to the game-based learning platform Kahoot!.

The transition of teaching activities to online mode, forced by the Covid-19 emergency, had also positive aspects, as it pushed to create new contents and use new approaches. An example is represented by our experience at the Department of Mathematics and Physics ofRoma Tre University, where we had to revolutionise an activity we carried on countless times over the years: the guided visit to our astronomical garden, the AstroGarden. In this paper, we analyse the new approach we used especially regarding the activities with the so-called oriented globe, the different audiences we reached and the positive feedback we received., Comment: preprint

School visits to research laboratories or facilities represent a unique way to bring students closer to science and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers. However, such visits can be very expensive for students and teachers, in terms of both time and money. In this paper, we present a possible alternative to on-site visits consisting inan activity addressed to high school students that makes use of a VR application to make them enter into a particle physics experiment. This proposal can represent a valid way of guaranteeing a visit to a research centre for all schools, regardless of their social or geographical origin. Nowadays, most telecommunication services adhere to the Service Function Chain (SFC) paradigm, where network functions are implemented via software. In particular, container virtualization is becoming a popular approach to deploy network functions and to enable resource slicing among several tenants. The resulting infrastructure is a complex system composed by a huge amount of containers implementing different SFC functionalities, along with different tenants sharing the same chain. The complexity of such a scenario lead us to evaluate two critical metrics: the steady-state availability (the probability that a system is functioning in long runs) and the latency (the time between a service request and the pertinent response). Consequently, we propose a latency-driven availability assessment for multi-tenant service chains implemented via Containerized Network Functions (CNFs). We adopt a multi-state system to model single CNFs and the queueing formalism to characterize the service latency. To efficiently compute the availability, we develop a modified version of the Multidimensional Universal Generating Function (MUGF) technique. Finally, we solve an optimization problem to minimize the SFC cost under an availability constraint. As a relevant example of SFC, we consider a containerized version of IP Multimedia Subsystem, whose parameters have been estimated through fault injection techniques and load tests.

Introducing Modern Physics represents an increasingly urgent need, towards which physics education concentrates many efforts. In order to contribute to this attempt, at the Department of Mathematics and Physics of Roma Tre University in Rome we focused on the possibility of treating General Relativity (GR) at high school level. We started with an interactive activity addressed to students that exploits the rubber sheet analogy (RSA) to show various phenomena related to gravity using the concept of space-time. Then, having verified its effectiveness, we began to include it among the initiatives the Department carry for high school teacher professional development, with the explicit aim of making them capable of carrying on the activity autonomously in the classrooms. In this paper, we analyse the teacher training approach we realized, and all the materials developed.

Cobalt oxides have long been understood to display intriguing phenomena known as spin-state crossovers, where the cobalt ion spin changes vs. temperature, pressure, etc. A very different situation was recently uncovered in praseodymium-containing cobalt oxides, where a first-order coupled spin-state/structural/metal-insulator transition occurs, driven by a remarkable praseodymium valence transition. Such valence transitions, particularly when triggering spin-state and metal-insulator transitions, offer highly appealing functionality, but have thus far been confined to cryogenic temperatures in bulk materials (e.g., 90 K in Pr1-xCaxCoO3). Here, we show that in thin films of the complex perovskite (Pr1-yYy)1-xCaxCoO3-{\delta}, heteroepitaxial strain tuning enables stabilization of valence-driven spin-state/structural/metal-insulator transitions to at least 291 K, i.e., around room temperature. The technological implications of this result are accompanied by fundamental prospects, as complete strain control of the electronic ground state is demonstrated, from ferromagnetic metal under tension to nonmagnetic insulator under compression, thereby exposing a potential novel quantum critical point., Comment: 35 pages, 7 figures

Despite the huge and continuous advances in computational linguistics, the lack of annotated data for Named Entity Recognition (NER) is still a challenging issue, especially in low-resource languages and when domain knowledge is required for high-quality annotations. Recent findings in NLP show the effectiveness of cloze-style questions in enabling language models to leverage the knowledge they acquired during the pre-training phase. In our work, we propose a simple and intuitive adaptation of Pattern-Exploiting Training (PET), a recent approach which combines the cloze-questions mechanism and fine-tuning for few-shot learning: the key idea is to rephrase the NER task with patterns. Our approach achieves considerably better performance than standard fine-tuning and comparable or improved results with respect to other few-shot baselines without relying on manually annotated data or distant supervision on three benchmark datasets: NCBI-disease, BC2GM and a private Italian biomedical corpus.

In the last years it is becoming more and more evident the importance in providing to the students, and people in general, a more realistic view on the scientific research world. In this framework many initiatives are beeing carried out to put students closer to scientists. The Astrophysics Masterclass, held in our Department, is an example of such activities, consisting in a one-day outreach event during which high school students experience the research methods in the astrophysics field. In this paper we describe this activity, which allows the participants to work on real research data in a real research center.
