De Corte, Lievens, and Sackett add to the literature on selection test validity and adverse impact (AI). Their Pareto-based weighting scheme essentially asks organizations if they are willing to give up some validity to hopefully achieve some reduction in AI. We considered their approach and conclusions in relation to the regression weighting method we used, and we offer five points that reflect our observations as well as our shared goals. We hope our comments, like their work in this field, will invigorate the pursuit of new ways of examining, and one day resolving, the persistent concern regarding the AI associated with valid selection tests. Abstract: Despite increasing development and administration of Internet surveys, tests, and many other applications to be used by employees and the general public, little is known about the knowledge individuals bring to Internet tasks. This research improves our understanding of the concept of Internet knowledge, and provides initial support for the construct validity of a new measure of Internet knowledge with respect to its factor structure, internal consistency reliability, and concurrent validity. From a practical perspective, clearer definition of Internet knowledge and the availability of a reliable measure of such knowledge can advance our understanding of how individuals develop Internet experience through its use and may also inform the process by which web sites and Internet applications are designed. Although there has been empirical attention paid to the criterion-related validity of predictor composites, there has been much less attention paid to the standardized ethnic group differences associated with these composites. One important area of inquiry in predictor composite research is the influence of adding predictors to a test of general mental ability. The limited empirical literature on this practice is mixed, but the prevailing expectation is that there is likely to be higher validity and less adverse impact. Unfortunately, much of the previous work is limited by the presence of inaccurate validity and standardized ethnic group difference values. In this analysis we formed meta-analytic matrices to more accurately estimate the validity and standardized ethnic group differences of several composites that combine a measure of cognitive ability with measures of conscientiousness, a structured interview, or biodata. While results were somewhat complex, we found that adding alternative predictors does not result in a situation in which validity automatically goes up and adverse impact potential automatically goes down. This field study examined the moderating role of employees' climate for updating perceptions in the relationship between goal orientation and job performance. Results are based on a sample of 163 information systems professionals employed by a large information technology (IT) firm. After controlling for the effect of previous performance ratings, learning-goal orientation was positively related to learning self-efficacy and performance-goal orientation was negatively related to efficacy beliefs, which in turn were positively related to job-performance ratings. Most important, the relationship between learning-goal orientation and overall job-performance ratings, mediated by learning self-efficacy, was stronger for individuals who perceived a supportive organizational climate for updating than for those with low updating climate perceptions. The results of this study advance our understanding of goal orientation, self-efficacy, and performance relationships not only because they are based on adults working in a dynamic field setting, but also because they demonstrate the moderating influence of employees' updating climate perceptions. ABSTRACT. The authors used longitudinal multisource field data to examine core aspects of the adaptive self-regulation model (A. S. Tsui & S. J. Ashford, 1994) in terms of linkages between self-monitoring, discrepancy in manager match-to-position, 5 measures of leadership, and manager performance. At Time 1, 64 superiors of focal managers rated the managers' matches to their positions within the organization; at Time 3, they rated the managers' performance. At Time 2, the 64 focal managers completed a measure of self-monitoring, and 192 subordinates rated the focal managers' leadership behaviors. Results of partial least squares analysis revealed that discrepancy in manager match-to-position was associated with reductions in laissez faire and passive management-by-exception behaviors and increases in transformational leadership behavior. Self-monitoring was positively associated with all 5 leadership behaviors. This study examined the relationship between locus of control, two sets of beliefs about computers as electronic performance monitors, general computer attitudes, and computer experience. Results support a model in which computer attitudes mediate the relationship between an individual's locus of control and computer experience and between monitoring beliefs about computers and computer experience.
