16. Impact of Learning a Foreign Language on the Enhancement of Cognitive Functions among Healthy Older Population

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to discuss to what extent foreign language learning may enhance cognitive functions among healthy older population. The methods used in this study included cognitive assessments using standardized tests, intervention through English language teaching and learning, and statistical analysis. Out of 60 older Czech citizens, 42 cognitively unimpaired participants were selected for the experiment. These participants were randomly divided into an experimental group (20 subjects) studying English for 12 weeks (three 45-min lessons per week) and a control group (22 subjects) whose members did not have any language training. The results of the research show that there has been a slight enhancement of cognitive skills in the experimental group. Nevertheless, on the whole, the scores of the experimental and control groups did not considerably differ. Despite this fact, the results indicate that cognitive functions among healthy older population can be maintained through regular foreign language training.

17. A Social Networks in Education

Abstract

At present social networks are becoming important in all areas of human activities. They are simply part and parcel of everyday life. They are mostly used for advertising, but they have already found their way into education. The future potential of social networks is high as it can be seen from their statistics on a daily, monthly or yearly increase in the number of their users. The purpose of this article is to provide a short description of the concept of social network and its classification according to the way how they function or their main purpose. In addition, the authors discuss two main approaches to teaching and the educational theories out of which connectivism is the first theory which takes into account the existence of computer networks and considers all knowledge and abilities as a result of mutual interconnection of information and people. Thus, it is the theory which enabled the implementation of ICT into education and has completely changed the traditional teaching and learning. In conclusion, the authors also explore a few already existing educational social network sites and their benefits for education. [For the full proceedings, see ED562093.]

18. Smart Learning: Are We Ready for It?

Abstract

Nowadays learning, particularly the university learning, is supported with modern information and communication technologies. These technologies also enable electronic learning, known as eLearning, which is now firmly established at almost all institutions of higher learning in developed and developing countries. Moreover, at present eLearning is being taken over by the so-called mobile learning (m-learning), which is possible thanks to the rapid growth of mobile devices such as notebooks, smartphones or tablets. In comparison with eLearning, m-learning provides further opportunities for more effective learning in the sense of its wireless connections, mobility and portability, full ubiquity or instant information sharing. The aim of this article is to explore whether university students at the Faculty of Informatics and Management in Hradec Kralove are well-equipped for this new smart learning and whether they use mobile technologies for their studies or not. 20. Information and communication technology diffusion, supply chain performance, health care and human development: A case of the South Asian region.

Abstract

South Asian countries have shown tremendous progress in information and communication technology (ICT) and have become one of the fastest-growing regions in technology, innovation, and business competitiveness. The pivotal role of ICT diffusion in the economic growth of both developed and developing countries is a well-established fact. Therefore, this research aims to examine the impact of ICT diffusion (especially the evaluation of ICT indicators) on three core outcomes, namely supply chain performance, health-care expenditures, and the Human Development Index in the context of South Asian economies. To measure ICT, we used three core ICT indicators (i.e., fixed broadband subscriptions, mobile phone subscribers, and internet users) individually as well as in the form of an index developed through principal component analysis (PCA). Panel data of South Asian economies ranging from 2007 to 2021 were used to estimate the equations. The outcomes revealed that all the variables were integrated at order one (1). Second, ICT had a long-run/equilibrium relationship with supply chain performance, health-care expenditures, and human development index. Third, the response of all individual ICT indicators as well as the ICT index on supply chain performance was positive and significant in estimated coefficients. Fourth, the ICT index and all ICT indicators had a positive influence on health-care expenditures. Finally, the ICT index and two out of three individual ICT indicators had a positive and significant influence on HDI. Interestingly, among all the three indicators of ICT, internet users were found to have more pronounced effects on the promotion of supply chain performance, health-care expenditure, and HDI. The more pronounced effect of internet users implied that policymakers should consider devising policies to promote ICT penetration with a core focus on internet penetration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
