Abstract

Objective: To understand the rewards university students associate with two key decisions shaping food choices. Participants: Thirty-eight university students. Methods: In this exploratory research, we conducted focus groups to identify the rewards students associated with choosing to eat at the campus dining hall and their specific food choices within that venue. We also obtained feedback on reward nomenclatures identified via a content analysis of health and business literature. Results: Students primarily chose the dining hall due to its convenience, foods offered, and the social aspects of the venue. Rewards associated with food choice included freshness, customization, variety, local foods, healthy foods, convenience, and portion size. Nomenclatures were relevant and meaningful. Conclusions: These students associate food choice decisions with rewards. Universities should consider whether dining halls and menu items link healthy foods to the rewards prioritized by students. 10. The Rewards of Mentoring

Abstract

A growing body of knowledge exists which describes the rewards and importance of mentors in the professional development of young men and women, particularly with relation to their interactions in professional and organizational settings. Research in both educational settings and the workplace indicates that students and employees alike are more likely to succeed, if they have had a mentor. Mentoring programs are seen to bridge the gap between professional post-secondary programs and the independent exercise of professional roles, adopted in many organizations as a human resource strategy to improve personnel training at all organizational levels, from orientation of incoming personnel to more advanced preparation for those ascending higher levels of the organizational ladder. The purpose of this research is to discuss the many rewards of mentoring experiences to include not only the rewards to the mentor, but also the mentee/protege, and the organization, as well.

11. The Perceptions of Administrators Concerning the One Florida Initiative

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to discover the perceptions of Florida law school administrators on the impact of the OFI (one Florida initiative) and the addition of two MSI (minority serving institution) law schools on diversity in Florida's legal profession. This research explored the impact of Governor Bush's EO (executive order) on diversity within the SUS (state university system) of Florida law schools. Further, this study examined the impact of the creation of two MSI law schools after implementation of the OFI, as perceived by the administrators. The concept of CRT (critical race theory) provides modern legal debates outlining the usefulness of historical civil rights policies in opinionated climates. This study will examine the role of CRT in relation to affirmative action and desegregation case law. CRT forms the framework for examining the impact of the creation of two MSI law schools in the state of Florida. In conclusion, this study found that minority representation in law schools has improved in Florida as a result of the OFI as well as the addition of two MSI law schools. Black representation, however, continues to lag behind other races, particularly the Hispanic population. This study concluded that the OFI has helped improve minority representation in the legal profession.

Abstract

Since their founding, the Black churches have strived to implement and fulfill their missions. These institutions acknowledge the importance to become actively involved in the community as well as engaged in the lives of young people. Black churches are faced with unique challenges every day, however, they provide significant number of resources to the communities at large. In this study, we examine the role of partnerships through local churches and its impact on low performing schools using qualitative methodology. Research shows that low performing schools are influenced positively by partnerships with Black churches.

14. The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent and Reduce Underage Drinking, 2007

Abstract

This "Call to Action" serves as a reminder that underage drinking has serious social costs and tragic consequences, demonstrating the importance of prevention. Underage alcohol use is not inevitable, and schools, parents, and other adults are not powerless to stop it. The latest research demonstrates a compelling need to address alcohol use early, continuously, and in the context of human development using a systematic approach that spans childhood through adolescence into adulthood. Such an approach is described in this "Call to Action." This report describes alcohol as the most widely used substance of abuse by American youth. It describes the dangers of alcohol to adolescent development, the factors that lead to alcohol abuse by youth, and possibilities for prevention and intervention. The "Call to Action" identifies six goals that the Surgeon General has proposed for the Nation. Those goals are: (1) Foster changes in American society that facilitate healthy adolescent development and that help prevent and reduce underage drinking; (2) Engage parents and other caregivers, schools, communities, all levels of government, all social systems that interface with youth, and youth themselves in a coordinated national effort to prevent and reduce underage drinking and its consequences; (3) Promote an understanding of underage alcohol consumption in the context of human development and maturation that takes into account individual adolescent characteristics as well as environmental, ethnic, cultural, and gender differences; (4) Conduct additional research on adolescent alcohol use and its relationship to development; (5) Work to improve public health surveillance on underage drinking and on population-based risk factors for this behavior; and (6) Work to ensure that policies at all levels are consistent with the national goal of preventing and reducing underage alcohol consumption. Recommendations are made throughout this report on the roles schools and universities must play in education, prevention, and intervention. The following are appended: (1) Definition of a Standard Drink; and (2) DSM--IV--TR Diagnostic Criteria for Alcohol Abuse and Dependence. (Contains 20 footnotes.)

23. An Exploratory Study of the Presentation of Special Education Law in Administrative Preparation Programs for Aspiring Administrators

Abstract

Administrators must have a strong command of education and special education law. Case law rulings, additions to procedural safeguards, and legislation in the area of special education are demonstrative of the need for additional training in the area of law for preservice administrators to increase their competency level. Valesky and Hirth (1992) examined training received by administrators in administrative preparation programs and the number of due processes and complaints received at the State Department of Education level for each state. This study uses the results of the seventeen-year old study as a baseline of information to review the impact of IDEA 1997, NCLB 2001, and the reauthorization of the IDEIA 2004 on licensure requirements, numbers of complaints, appeals, and due process hearings. This study found no significant differences between clock hours of special education law presented in administrator preparation programs and complaints, due process hearings requests, and fully adjudicated hearings. The overall presence of special education law has increased tremendously since Valesky and Hirth (1992) investigated the topic prior to IDEA 1997. Descriptive conclusions were based on the continued abundance of complaints, due process hearing requests, and fully adjudicated hearings. After almost twenty years of reform efforts, a large percentage of university administrator preparation programs are not increasing the time focused on special education law; special education litigation continues to be faced by many school districts across the United States. Developed by the Institute for Computer Sciences and Technology and the Defense Intelligence Agency with input from other federal agencies, this detailed document contains the 1983 technical forecast for the information processing industry through 1997. Part I forecasts the underlying technologies of hardware and software, discusses changes in the information industry and market, and forecasts products and systems of the future, such as general-purpose systems, distributed processing systems, and office systems. Commentary by federal agency staff on the forecast is provided in Part II, and Part III summarizes a teleconference in which industry automatic data processing (ADP) users and vendors reviewed the forecast. Cost estimates are provided for computer systems, subsystems, and terminals through 1997. Additional discussions address the current and potential rules and regulations of the federal environment, and how they may affect the federal inventory of new ADP equipment and management strategies for the new information technologies, with emphasis on microcomputers. Abstract

This paper begins with a discussion of the meaning and importance of error analysis in language teaching and learning. The practical implications of what error analysis is for the classroom teacher are discussed, along with several possible systems for classifying learner errors. The need for the language teacher to establish certain priorities in error correction, since some errors are more detrimental to effective communication than others, is stressed. Brief guidelines are given on how a teacher might begin to collect data to study the kinds of errors made by his or her students. (PMP)

Abstract

Since 2012-2013 influenza season, World Health Organization (who) recommends the formulation of tetravalent vaccines. Globally, many countries already use tetravalent vaccines in their national immunization programs, while in Latin America only a small number. Two Influenza b lineages co-circulate, their epidemiological behavior is unpredictable. On average they represent 22.6% of influenza cases and more than 50% in predominant seasons. The lack of concordance between recommended and circulating strains was 25 and 32% in the 2010-2017 and 2000-2013 seasons, respectively. There are no clinical differences between influenza A and B. It occurs more frequently from five to 19 years of age. Influenza b has a higher proportion of attributable deaths than influenza a (1.1 vs. 0.4%), or 2.65 (95% ci 1.18-5.94). Abstract

Alkylation of a methionine residue in medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase purified from pig kidney radically reduces enzyme affinity for octanoyl-CoA affinity and drastically decreases enzyme activity. Further, the redox equilibrium constant is reduced from 9 to 0.2. This reduction is attributed to the attenuation of the selective association between the substrate and the reduced enzyme.

Abstract

The author examines issues related to adult assertiveness in controlling and setting limits for handicapped children. Reasons for adults not wishing to be in charge include feelings of guilt, lack of consistency in enforcing rules, and a sense of sympathy for special children. Assertiveness is distinguished from aggressiveness, and suggestions for assertive speaking such as making direct straightforward statements are given. The art of making assertive compromises is discussed, as is applying penalities. A chart categorizing nonverbal behaviors as nonassertive, aggressive, and assertive is included. (CL)

Secondary students of French interviewed a researcher posing as a French speaker. Error patterns and structures used were analyzed. Many errors were apparently due to interference; many others were apparently the result of reduction processes.
