The demand for natural nanomaterials in the biomedical field is continuously increasing due to their biocompatibility and eco-friendly nature. MTB produces uniform, well-ordered magnetic nanoparticles inside the magnetosomes, drawing attention due to their unique and remarkable features. MTB and magnetosomes have gained popularity in cancer treatment and diagnosis, especially in magnetic resonance imaging. Distinctive features highlighted include advancements in extraction, characterization, and functionalization techniques, alongside breakthroughs in utilizing MTB-based magnetosomes as contrast agents in imaging, biocompatible drug carriers, and tools for minimally invasive therapies. The biocompatible nature, functionalizing of the surface of bacterial magnetosomes, and response to the external magnetic field make them a potential candidate for the theragnostic purpose of MTB and magnetosomes. In the present review, emphasis has been given to the foundation of magnetosomes at a genetic level, mass production of magnetosomes, etc. Further authors have reviewed the various functionalization methods of the magnetosomes for cancer treatment. Finally, the authors have reviewed the recent advancements in MTB and magnetosome-based cancer detection, diagnosis, and treatment. Challenges such as scalability, long-term safety, and clinical translation are also discussed, presenting a roadmap for future research exploiting MTBs and magnetosomes’ unique properties.Keywords: magnetotactic bacteria, magnetosomes, hyperthermia, gene therapy, nanomedicine

The prime goal of the study is to investigate the relevance of torsional surface wave propagation in a thermally conducting heterogeneous (functionally graded) semi-infinite medium. The closed form of the dispersion equation for the propagation of torsional waves in heterogeneous elastic media has been established by assuming equations of motion in the temperature field with proper boundary conditions. One particular case where torsional vibration generates wave propagation in homogeneous materials has been addressed, and therefore, dispersion equation has been developed. The phase velocity and attenuation coefficient in both homogeneous and heterogeneous half-space have been computed to demonstrate the wave properties. In order to investigate the functionally graded parameter associated with the elastic medium, the effects of heat flow components related to thermodynamic forces, and the coupling coefficient related to the deformation and temperature fields, numerical calculations with graphical interpretation have been performed separately for phase velocity and attenuation coefficient.

Typically, such data have been dealt with in a case-control setting, which applies two-sample tests and ignores the correlation between the fellow eyes. Practitioners are mostly unaware that such measurements hide the labels of the fellow eyes, which rules out standard tools, such as paired t or signed-rank tests.Methods: This report discusses the problems with such data on best and worst eye measurements, and illustrates alternative paired tests for equality of means or locations using a case-control dataset.Results: This report illustrates that methods which ignore the correlation between fellow eyes result in grossly conservative tests. A battery of Z-tests which consider this correlation can resolve this issue.Discussion: This finding emphasizes the importance of selecting an appropriate control group for the detection of possible markers. Further, it cites an example to show that using data from fellow eyes and adjusting for their correlation may not always be the best option, contrary to common perception.Keywords: best eye, worst eye, unordered pairs

Hyperglycemia-induced endothelial dysfunction is the principal contributing factor leading to the development of microangiopathy. Altered levels of microRNA (miR), the negative regulator of protein-coding genes, have been observed and considered to be markers for DR. Present study aimed to find out whether miR levels in plasma could be effective biomarkers to differentiate between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with non-proliferative retinopathy (NPDR) from T2DM with no-DR (DNR).Methods: We recruited 50 T2DM subjects comprising 31 NPDR and 19 DNR individuals. Surrogate markers of systemic oxidative stress and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were measured in plasma. Levels of miR-126 and miR-132 were determined in plasma and vitreous fluid using real-time PCR.Results: We observed that levels of miR-126 and miR-132 were decreased in NPDR subjects in comparison to DNR. Plasma levels of miRs were inversely correlated with secreted levels of VEGF and oxidative stress marker. The levels of these miRs showed discriminating ability between NPDR and DNR.Conclusion: Circulating miRs 126 and 132 in plasma or vitreous may serve as biomarkers for early diabetic retinopathy risk prediction, provided validated in a larger cohort and other forms of retinal vasculopathy or retinopathy in the future.Keywords: diabetic retinopathy, microRNA-126, microRNA-132, oxidative stress, malondialdehyde, vascular endothelial growth factor

Seventy-seven eyes received 3 consecutive monthly intravitreal injections of RBZ (0.5 mg) and were followed by prompt laser photocoagulation (within 7– 10 days after the third injection). Similarly, 51 eyes received 3 consecutive monthly intravitreal injections of BVZ (1.25 mg), an off-label drug, and were followed by prompt laser therapy. Safety assessments of the therapy, as well as surrogate markers of biochemical derangements related to diabetic retinopathy (DR), were also investigated at the end of 12 months.Results: Seventy-seven subjects who were given a treatment of RBZ+laser therapy showed average 6.87± 5.53 letters gain in their best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) score, whereas the ones treated with off-label BVZ+ laser therapy demonstrated improvement in BCVA of an average 6.82± 5.76 letters in “Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study” (ETDRS) chart. The study also highlights the cost-effectiveness of both RBZ+laser and BVZ+laser therapies for the treatment of DME in DR. The results demonstrated that a subject has to pay 20.951 times more cost (in INR) for RBZ+laser therapy compared to BVZ+laser therapy, to get an almost similar outcome.Conclusion: BVZ is found to be the more attractive option for treating DME in DR for its cost-friendliness over RBZ in terms of BCVA outcome, as well as the safety perspectives, at least for the economically backward population in developing countries, like India.Keywords: diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, ranibizumab, bevacizumab, laser therapy, cost-effectiveness

Exploitation of heterosis is one of the potential means for improvement of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum var. grossum L.) that can further be utilized for identification of desirable recombinants. Promising hybrids could be acceptable to growers of tropical and subtropical climates if it is a high yielder with attractive fruit colour and blocky shape. Seven diverse parents were selected through multivariate analysis and were crossed in half diallel mating design to determine the extent of heterosis, mode of gene action, combining ability effects, and dominance estimates for 18 quantitative characters. Expression of fruit colour and shape at physiological maturity stage in the F1 generation indicated the dominance of red coloured group over other fruit colour groups and dominance of blocky fruit shape over elongate and round fruit shape. Preponderance of non-additive gene action for most of the characters under study suggested the usefulness of exploitation of hybrid vigour. Three genotypes, 8/4, C/4, and Baby Bell were found most promising donors. The hybrids, Arya×Baby Bell, 8/4×Baby Bell and C/4×8/4 were identified as promising based on per se performance, heterosis manifested, and relevance of specific combining ability effects, for possible commercialization under low cost protected structure of tropical and subtropical climates after critical testing. Partial to over dominance response in inheritance of most traits contributed to the genetic basis of heterosis. Isolation of pure lines from the segregating generation of heterotic hybrids emerged as a promising approach to develop line-bred variety having improved fruit yield and quality. Non-Newtonian fluid flow in pipe bends is inevitable in industrial applications. Previous researchers have extensively explored Newtonian flow through curved ducts. However, the non-Newtonian counterpart gets little attention. We study the turbulent flow of shear-dependent fluids obeying the Power-Law model in a pipe manifold containing an in-plane double bend. Ostwald-de Waele's power law is used to model the fluid's rheology. We utilize computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to solve Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with the k-ε turbulence model. We validate our numerical results with previous experimental results. The in-plane double bend perturbs the flow in the pipe manifold to develop a Prandtl's secondary flow of the first kind. A fully developed flow at the bend upstream is disturbed due to the bend's curvature and regains its fully developed characteristics upon a certain downstream length after the exit of the bend. We study the rheological characteristics of the secondary flow within the bend and the evolution of fluid flow at the bend downstream. We demonstrate that the centrifugal force-dominated secondary flow increases with a decrease of the non-Newtonian power-law index. We capture the camel'sback-shaped velocity profiles within the bend due to accelerating-decelerating flow. The study reveals that the average flow velocity increases along the bend with a corresponding pressure head loss.
