The developments of nano-roughness surface textures are important to implement enhanced osseointegration, cell adhesion, and proliferation in polymers for biomedical applications such as tissue engineering scaffolds and orthopaedic implants. The hydrophilicity of the polymeric implants is a crucial factor for cell adhesion, which can be improved via adapting the roughness of the surface. This study explores the surface modification of poly (lactic acid) (PLA) polymer through an alkaline wet etching process, varying alkaline concentration and etching time under both room temperature and elevated conditions. The main objective is to refine the PLA surface through wet etching, altering its properties for potential use in biomedical contexts. The assessment of surface roughness is conducted through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These techniques offer a comprehensive analysis of surface topography, nanoscale roughness, and potential chemical changes resulting from the wet etching process. The nano-roughness of treated 3D printed PLA was increased by 1.4 times compared to the control 3D printed PLA. The research contributes to the broader field of biomaterial engineering, laying the groundwork for subsequent investigations that will focus on applying the derived conclusions to enhance PLA’s biocompatibility and functionality in tissue engineering and orthopaedic applications.

A previously in-house developed patient-specific scaffold design workflow was extended with new features to overcome several limitations and to broaden its adaptability to diverse bone defects, thereby enhancing its fit for routine clinical use. It was applied to three clinical cases for further validation. A virtual surgical resection tool was developed to remove regions of the bone defect models. The minor cavity fill module enabled the generation of scaffold designs with smooth external surfaces and the segmental defect fill module allowed a versatile method to fill a segmental defect cavity. The boundary representation method based surgical approach module in the original workflow was redeveloped to use functional representation, eliminating previously seen resolution dependant artefacts. Lastly, a method to overlay the scaffold designs on computed tomography images of the defect for design verification by the surgeon was introduced. The extended workflow was applied to two ongoing clinical case studies of a complex bilateral femoral defect and a humerus defect, and also to a case of a large volume craniomaxillofacial defect. It was able to successfully generate scaffolds without any obstructions to their surgical insertion which was verified by digital examination as well as using physical 3D printed models. All produced surface meshes were free from 3D printing mesh errors. The scaffolds designed for the ongoing cases were 3D printed and successfully surgically implanted, providing confidence in the extended modular workflow’s ability to be applied to a broad range of diverse clinical cases.

This research is dedicated to exploring and identifying the most effective design for an energy source tailored specifically to meet the electricity demands of a residential community. In an era where energy efficiency and sustainability are paramount, this study emphasizes the importance of technical and economic considerations in energy sourcing. It posits that any viable solution must not only be efficient in its energy production and consumption but also reliable in its delivery and financially feasible for the residents who will depend on it. To address this multifaceted challenge, the study proposes the innovative use of a rotation-invariant coordinate convolutional neural network in conjunction with binary battle royale optimization techniques. These advanced methodologies are selected for their potential to enhance the modelling and optimization processes involved in energy source design. The primary goal of employing these methods is to minimize two critical factors: the net present cost of the energy system and the overall energy cost incurred by the residents. By focusing on these objectives, the research aims to ensure that the proposed energy solutions are not only cost-effective but also sustainable over the long term. To rigorously test the proposed model and evaluate its performance, the research is conducted using the MATLAB platform. The study employs established methodologies and performance metrics to assess the outcomes of the model, ensuring that the findings are both credible and applicable to real-world scenarios. Through comprehensive testing and detailed analysis, this research aims to provide significant insights and actionable recommendations for the optimal design of energy sources in residential areas. By contributing to the ongoing discourse on sustainable energy solutions, the study seeks to inform policymakers, energy planners, and community stakeholders about effective strategies for meeting residential energy demands while promoting environmental sustainability. Ultimately, the findings of this research could play a crucial role in shaping the future of energy sourcing in residential communities, paving the way for more resilient and sustainable energy systems.

The present research tried to prompt self-regulated learning, autonomy, and self-efficacy of EFL learners through authentic assessment in Iranian EFL classrooms. To do so, 57 Iranian EFL learners were chosen and assigned to two equal groups; the Experimental Group (CG) and the Control Group (CG). Then, three questionnaires were administered to assess the respondents' self-regulated learning, autonomy, and self-efficacy before doing the treatment. After that, the EG received the treatment via using authentic assessments whereas the CG received the instruction through non-authentic assessments. After teaching 15 English passages to both groups, three post-tests were administered to them to determine the effects of the treatment on their self-regulated learning, autonomy, and self-efficacy. Lastly, the attitude questionnaire was given to the EG students to assess their attitudes toward implementing authentic assessments in EFL classes. The outcomes of ANCOVA revealed that there were significant differences between the post-tests of the EG and the CG. The results displayed that the EG noticeably outdid the CG in self-regulated learning, autonomy, and self-efficacy post-tests. In addition, the results showed that the EG held a positive attitude toward using authentic assessment in EFL classes. It can be concluded that applying authentic assessment in EFL classes can bring about constructive impacts for EFL learners. The findings of this investigation can be extremely valuable for EFL teachers and material designers to consider the impacts of authentic assessments and invest more in using these sorts of assessments.

Finding out which teaching strategies best support students learning is a key objective of educational research. Knowing this, this study investigated the comparative effects of consciousness-raising (CR) tasks and dynamic assessment (DA) on morphological awareness in an Afghani EFL context. To achieve this, 90 EFL grade 11 learners from three intact classes were selected through a convenience sampling procedure and were assigned to DA, CR, and control groups, respectively, with the same number of participants in each condition. A nonrandomized pretest-posttest design was carried out. The results of the Oxford quick placement test revealed that the participants had pre-intermediate English proficiency. To assess learners' morphological awareness, two different tests of morphological awareness were given both prior to the treatment and right after it. The DA group received interactionist DA on the target morphemes, the CR group received CR instruction on the target form, and the control group received nothing. The results of a one-way between-groups ANOVA revealed that both DA and CR groups significantly outperformed the control group on the post-test. A further post hoc analysis using Bonferroni adjustment demonstrated that the difference between DA and CR groups was also statistically significant with a small effect size (eta squared = 0.042), substantiating the superiority of DA over CR tasks on morphological awareness. The theoretical and pedagogical implications of the study are discussed.

A streamlined design workflow that facilitates the efficient design and manufacture of patient-specific scaffolds independently applied by the surgical team has been recognised as a key step in a holistic approach towards the envisioned routine clinical translation of scaffold-guided bone regeneration (SGBR). A modular design workflow was developed to semi-automatically fill defect cavities, ensure patient specificity and ideal surgical scaffold insertion for a given surgical approach, add fixation points to secure the scaffolds to the host bone and generate scaffold based on Voronoi, periodic lattice and triply periodic minimal surface pore architectures. The adopted functional representation modelling technique produces models free from 3D printing mesh errors. It was applied to a clinical case of a complicated femoral bone defect. All models were free from mesh errors and the patient-specific fit and unobstructive insertion were validated via digital inspection and physical investigation by way of 3D printed prototypes. The real-time responsiveness of the workflow to user input allows the designer to receive real-time feedback from the surgeon, which is associated with reducing the time to finalise a patient-specific scaffold design. In summary, an efficient workflow was developed that substantially facilitates routine clinical implementation of SGBR through its ability to streamline the design of 3D printed scaffolds.

Objectives: To investigate the relationship between work–life balance and the psychological well-being of metro rail travelers working in the information technology sector. The study also examined occupational stress as a pathway between work-life balance and psychological well-being. The study also investigated the impact of occupational stress and work–life balance on the psychological well-being of metro travelers who work in the information technology sector, modeling lower- and higher-order constructs. Methods: A quantitative survey method was used, and the data were gathered from information technology employees who frequently travel on Metro Rail to commute to the office and return home when the COVID-19 pandemic peaked in India in 2022. A structured questionnaire was developed, and a link was provided to the IT sector employees visiting almost all the metro stations in Hyderabad, an Indian Metro, to measure 8 reflective constructs. The data were gathered via random sampling, and the questionnaires were randomly distributed to the different IT sector companies. The valid responses of 500 participants were analyzed for structural equation modeling. The eight reflective constructs in the study are occupational stress, the 3 constructs of work–life balance—"work interference with personal life, personal life interference with work and work–personal life enhancement"—and the four constructs of psychological well-being autonomy, self-acceptance, positive relations, and environmental mastery. Results: The SEM results for the lower-order constructs indicate that the impact of occupational stress on psychological well-being was statistically significant (p < 0.005), as were the two constructs of psychological well-being, environmental mastery, and self-acceptance (p < 0.001; p < 0.05). With respect to the impact of the work–life balance constructs, the impacts of the WIPL, WPLE, and PLIW work–life balance constructs were statistically significant (p < 0.05; p < 0.001, respectively) for all four psychological well-being constructs. Occupational stress partially mediated the relationship between work–life balance and psychological well-being, as both the direct and indirect effects were statistically significant when the higher-order constructs work–life balance and psychological well-being were tested. The direct effects of occupational stress and work–life balance on psychological well-being are statistically significant (p < 0.05, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The authors suggest framing policies to mitigate occupational stress and enhance the psychological well-being and work–life balance of employees in the information technology sector. The research suggests an approach that prioritizes customer needs and aims to reduce energy expenses while safeguarding customer privacy. Furthermore, it is recommended that smart homes incorporate a home energy management system to optimize appliance energy consumption. Conversely, the introduction of demand-side management addresses the energy management challenges faced by smart households. The main goal of this approach is to decrease energy usage and electricity costs for customers. Moreover, it enhances user satisfaction while waiting at common intervals. The primary emphasis of this study is on a smart residence furnished with energy management technology and smart home gadgets capable of supplying electricity to the grid. These objectives are considered distinct aspects in the multi-objective optimization issue stemming from this approach. The study utilizes the grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA) to optimize battery and home appliance scheduling in smart homes with flexible devices. The goal is to reduce the overall cost of microgrid systems through demand-side management implementation. This comparison highlights the superiority of the proposed method in optimizing energy consumption and reducing carbon emissions in a variety of scenarios. By achieving lower energy costs and carbon emissions while maintaining a comfortable indoor environment, the proposed method proves to be a highly effective and sustainable solution for energy management in buildings. These simulation results provide strong evidence of the method’s potential to significantly impact energy efficiency and environmental sustainability in real-world applications. Furthermore, the consistent minimization of the discomfort index showcases the method’s ability to prioritize occupant comfort while still achieving significant energy savings and emissions reductions. Overall, the comparison with other algorithms solidifies the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed method in addressing the complex challenges of energy management and sustainability in smart homes.

Purpose: This paper aims to derive criteria for a strategic selection of learning management system (LMS) after making an analysis of the feedback data collected from learners and academic counselors in open and distance learning (ODL) to evaluate their perceptions. This analysis hints at the need to implement a learning management system (LMS) in ODL. Selecting an appropriate LMS can prove to be a strategic approach for ODL in achieving self-reliance and competitiveness. Design/methodology/approach: Research design includes qualitative design intended to discuss the features, advantages and attributes of different popular LMSs and compare them. In addition, the quantitative design (a questionnaire-based online feedback) to analyze the perceptions of the learners and academic counselors in order to know their e-learning needs has also been used. Results have been exhibited in tabular/graphical formats for easy comprehension and enhanced understanding. Findings: Findings of the study suggest that availability of plethora of LMSs in the market, which also include open source (OS) LMSs, makes the decision-making as regards selection of an appropriate LMS strategically crucial requiring adequate consideration of every aspect such as cost, quality, usage, capacity, budget and most importantly priorities and objectives. Research limitations/implications: This study will help educational administrators and decision-makers in ODL for building a quality civilized life and empowered society by removing the constraints related to financial problems, disabilities, time, geographical conditions and many others in bringing education to the doorstep of every willing learner. The technical details of LMS, however, were intentionally kept simplified to achieve the objective and provide easy comprehensibility for the reader with little technical background, which might be a limitation of this study. Originality/value: This study highlights that ODL has tasted success with optimum exploitation of different technological advancements in its transformational expedition from conventional learning to innovative e-learning and to the newest adaptive e-learning system. The huge potential of LMS, in providing learners and educators in ODL with an effective web-based learning system incorporating almost all the academic activities, has attracted organizations for using it not only for imparting education to learners but also for providing appropriate trainings to their human resources.

Bacterial infections and antibiotic resistance remain significant contributors to morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite recent advances in biomedical research, a substantial number of medical devices and implants continue to be plagued by bacterial colonisation, resulting in severe consequences, including fatalities. The development of nanostructured surfaces with mechano-bactericidal properties has emerged as a promising solution to this problem. These surfaces employ a mechanical rupturing mechanism to lyse bacterial cells, effectively halting subsequent biofilm formation on various materials and, ultimately, thwarting bacterial infections. This review delves into the prevailing research progress within the realm of nanostructured mechano-bactericidal polymeric surfaces. It also investigates the diverse fabrication methods for developing nanostructured polymeric surfaces with mechano-bactericidal properties. We then discuss the significant challenges associated with each approach and identify research gaps that warrant exploration in future studies, emphasizing the potential for polymeric implants to leverage their distinct physical, chemical, and mechanical properties over traditional materials like metals.

Employer branding is a complex idea that is important in many different industries. It represents a company's ability to attract, engage and retain talent as well as its status as an employer. A strong employer brand transcends industry boundaries to impact the success and sustainability of businesses in today's competitive job market. The authors examined the effect of employer branding on employee performance by mediating and moderating roles of a supportive work environment and compensation and benefits respectively. The authors followed the quantitative methodology with a set of strategies and hypotheses and gathered numerical data. The data were gathered by surveying employees working in information technology sector companies in the city of Bangalore. The data analysis includes descriptive statistics, factor analysis and structural equation modeling analysis using SPSS and IBM AMOS version 28. The Cronbach's alpha values of the reliability statistics ranged from 0.920 to 0.930 indicating the questionnaire's internal consistency and reliability. The model fit indices CMIN/DF 1.389, CFI 0.966, GFI 0.952, TLI 0.961, IFI 0.966, NFI 0.904, SRMR 0.060, RMSEA 0.051 and PClose 0.448 indicate an excellent fit of the model. The constructs of compensation and benefits and a supportive work environment partially mediate employee performance through employer branding. The moderator's supportive work environment strengthens the positive relationship between employee branding and employee performance. Strong employer branding is important for attracting top talent and improving employee performance in various industries but it is especially important in the IT sector. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The energy collection element of a parabolic trough collector includes a selective coated metallic receiver tube inside an evacuated glass tube. Perpendicularly incident sun light on the parabolic trough mirror aperture is concentrated on the receiver tube highly nonuniformly along its circular direction. This solar energy is collected as thermal energy circulating a suitable heat transfer fluid (HTF) through the tube. This conjugate heat transfer phenomenon under nonuniform heat flux boundary condition is computationally studied applying 3D finite volume (FV) modelling technique of computational fluid dynamics coupled with Monte Carlo ray tracing (MCRT) optical data. The MCRT model simulates the actual flux profile around the receiver tube. Apart from a FV model, this coupled study requires expertise in, and access to, a suitable MCRT code. A combination of polynomial correlations and user‐defined function (UDF) is introduced in this article in order to minimize the need of MCRT codes from subsequent FV modelling of the receiver tube of the Luz Solar 2 (LS2) collector. The correlations are developed from a verified 3D MCRT model, which is equivalent to the local irradiation data as a function of receiver circular location. The UDF includes two algorithms: one to develop solar flux profile from the correlations around the receiver, and the other to calculate heat loss from the receiver. Interpreting the UDF into ANSYS Fluent, a 3D FV model of the LS2 receiver is developed and validated with experimental results. The effectiveness of the UDF as an alternative to MCRT code is verified. The FV model is capable to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of the LS2 collector receiver at different solar irradiation level, optical properties of the collector components, glass tube conditions, HTFs, inserts or swirl generators, collector length, and internal diameter of the tube.

Microfluidic organ-on-a-chip (OoC) technology has enabled studies on dynamic physiological conditions as well as being deployed in drug testing applications. A microfluidic pump is an essential component to perform perfusion cell culture in OoC devices. However, it is challenging to have a single pump that can fulfil both the customization function needed to mimic a myriad of physiological flow rates and profiles found in vivo and multiplexing requirements (i.e., low cost, small footprint) for drug testing operations. The advent of 3D printing technology and open-source programmable electronic controllers presents an opportunity to democratize the fabrication of mini-peristaltic pumps suitable for microfluidic applications at a fraction of the cost of commercial microfluidic pumps. However, existing 3D-printed peristaltic pumps have mainly focused on demonstrating the feasibility of using 3D printing to fabricate the structural components of the pump and neglected user experience and customization capability. Here, we present a user-centric programmable 3D-printed mini-peristaltic pump with a compact design and low manufacturing cost (~USD 175) suitable for perfusion OoC culture applications. The pump consists of a user-friendly, wired electronic module that controls the operation of a peristaltic pump module. The peristaltic pump module comprises an air-sealed stepper motor connected to a 3D-printed peristaltic assembly, which can withstand the high-humidity environment of a cell culture incubator. We demonstrated that this pump allows users to either program the electronic module or use different-sized tubing to deliver a wide range of flow rates and flow profiles. The pump also has multiplexing capability as it can accommodate multiple tubing. The performance and user-friendliness of this low-cost, compact pump can be easily deployed for various OoC applications.

Inspired by nature, it is envisaged that a nanorough surface exhibits bactericidal properties by rupturing bacterial cells. In order to study the interaction mechanism between the cell membrane of a bacteria and a nanospike at the contact point, a finite element model was developed using the ABAQUS software package. The model, which saw a quarter of a gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) cell membrane adhered to a 3 × 6 array of nanospikes, was validated by the published results, which show a reasonably good agreement with the model. The stress and strain development in the cell membrane was modeled and were observed to be spatially linear and temporally nonlinear. From the study, it was observed that the bacterial cell wall was deformed around the location of the nanospike tips as full contact was generated. Around the contact point, the principal stress reached above the critical stress leading to a creep deformation that is expected to cause cell rupture by penetrating the nanospike, and the mechanism is envisaged to be somewhat similar to that of a paper punching machine. The obtained results in this project can provide an insight on how bacterial cells of a specific species are deformed when they adhere to nanospikes, and how it is ruptured using this mechanism.
