Abstract

A formulation is presented for shaping dual-reflector antennas designed to offer an omnidirectional coverage. The shaping procedure is based on geometrical optics (GO) principles and assumes a uniform phase distribution for the aperture field. Two distinct dual-reflector arrangements, based on the axis-displaced Cassegrain (ADC) and ellipse (ADE) configurations, are investigated. The GO shaping results are validated using the accurate analysis provided by the method-of-moments technique. Index Terms--Omnidirectional antennas, reflector antennas, reflector shaping.

Abstract

The vector aperture field of classical offset Dragonian dual-reflector antennas is derived using geometrical-optics concepts. This field then yields the equivalent paraboloid of the geometry. From these results, the conditions for an axially symmetric equivalent paraboloid, when a circular aperture is assumed, are obtained. A complete step-by-step geometrical-optics-based design procedure for optimum classical offset Dragonian antennas with circular apertures is then presented (i.e., zero geometrical-optics cross-polarization and minimum spillover). This procedure is demonstrated by two design examples. Index Terms--Dragonian antennas, multireflector antennas, offset reflector antennas, reflector antennas.

10. Low-Gain Circularly Polarized Antenna with Torus-Shaped Pattern

Abstract

The Juno mission to Jupiter requires an antenna with a torus-shaped antenna pattern with approximately 6 dBic gain and circular polarization over the Deep Space Network (DSN) 7-GHz transmit frequency and the 8-GHz receive frequency. Given the large distances that accumulate en-route to Jupiter and the limited power afforded by the solar-powered vehicle, this toroidal low-gain antenna requires as much gain as possible while maintaining a beam width that could facilitate a +/-10deg edge of coverage. The natural antenna that produces a toroidal antenna pattern is the dipole, but the limited approx. = 2.2 dB peak gain would be insufficient. Here a shaped variation of the standard bicone antenna is proposed that could achieve the required gains and bandwidths while maintaining a size that was not excessive. The final geometry that was settled on consisted of a corrugated, shaped bicone, which is fed by a WR112 waveguide-to-coaxial- waveguide transition. This toroidal low-gain antenna (TLGA) geometry produced the requisite gain, moderate sidelobes, and the torus-shaped antenna pattern while maintaining a very good match over the entire required frequency range. Its "horn" geometry is also low-loss and capable of handling higher powers with large margins against multipactor breakdown. The final requirement for the antenna was to link with the DSN with circular polarization. A four-layer meander-line array polarizer was implemented; an approach that was fairly well suited to the TLGA geometry. The principal development of this work was to adapt the standard linear bicone such that its aperture could be increased in order to increase the available gain of the antenna. As one increases the aperture of a standard bicone, the phase variation across the aperture begins to increase, so the larger the aperture becomes, the greater the phase variation. In order to maximize the gain from any aperture antenna, the phase should be kept as uniform as possible. Thus, as the standard bicone fs aperture increases, the gain increase becomes less until one reaches a point of diminishing returns. In order to overcome this problem, a shaped aperture is used. Rather than the standard linear bicone, a parabolic bicone was found to reduce the amount of phase variation as the aperture increases. In fact, the phase variation is half of the standard linear bicone, which leads to higher gain with smaller aperture sizes. The antenna pattern radiated from this parabolic-shaped bicone antenna has fairly high side lobes. The Juno project requested that these sidelobes be minimized. This was accomplished by adding corrugations to the parabolic shape. This corrugated-shaped bicone antenna had reasonably low sidelobes, and the appropriate gain and beamwidth to meet project requirements.

Abstract

The Juno Mission to Jupiter requires a full sphere of coverage throughout its cruise to and mission at Jupiter. This coverage is accommodated through the use of five (5) antennas; forward facing low gain, medium gain, and high gain antennas, and an aft facing low gain antenna along with an aft mounted low gain antenna with a torus shaped antenna pattern. Three of the antennas (the forward low and medium gain antennas) are classical designs that have been employed on several prior NASA missions. Two of the antennas employ new technology developed to meet the Juno mission requirements. The new technology developed for the low gain with torus shaped radiation pattern represents a significant evolution of the bicone antenna. The high gain antenna employs a specialized surface shaping designed to broaden the antenna's main beam at Ka-band to ease the requirements on the spacecraft's attitude control system.

Abstract

Twisting a wire pair is often used to reduce the wire's low frequency magnetic flux density impinging upon spatially adjacent circuitry. Typically, predictions of the magnetic flux density due to the twisted-wire pair are based upon mathematical formulations for infinite-length wires. In this work, expressions for predicting the quasistatic magnetic flux density near a finite-length, current-carrying twisted-wire pair are derived. These equations are numerically integrated, and the results compared with the magnetic flux density from the corresponding straight-wire pair, thereby yielding results useful for electromagnetic compatibility analyses. Additionally, approximate far-zone magnetic flux density equations are developed, and their range of validity established. These equations are useful for magnetic flux density estimations at distances further removed from the twisted-wire pair than the usual ones encountered in a typical enclosure. Also, they show that the large near-zone reduction of the magnetic flux density magnitude obtained by twisting the wire pair, relative to the straight-wire pair, is not available in the far-zone.

Abstract

A geometrical optics procedure for designing electrically optimized classical offset dual reflector antennas with circular apertures is presented. Equations are derived that allow the size and spacing of the main and subreflectors of the antenna system, along with the feed horn subintended angle, to be used as input variables of the design procedure. The procedure, together with these equations, yields an optimized design, starting from general system requirements. The procedure is demonstrated by designing both an offset Cassegrain and an offset Gregorian antenna, and is validated by analyzing their radiation patterns using physical optics surface current integration on both the main and subreflectors.

Abstract

An efficient algorithm for numerically evaluating diffraction integrals is presented. The algorithm employs a predictor-corrector scheme combined with Ludwig's integration procedure. The predictor-corrector eliminates the amplitude and phase ambiguities present in the real+imaginary algebra used in machine calculations and provides accuracy self-checking capabilities. The end result is a reliable and efficient integration method that does not require independent integrand phase information, can handle arbitrarily shaped integration domains, and is capable of monitoring its own accuracy as the integration proceeds. The performance of the algorithm is investigated by computing, using the Physical Optics technique, the electromagnetic field scattered by representative reflector antenna geometries. These tests demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is particularly efficient in the analysis of multi-reflector systems.

Abstract

This paper presents a technique for solving the mode purity problem that exists in cryogenic microwave frequency discriminators using X-band sapphire whispering-gallery mode resonators. The sapphire cavity resonates in a pair of quasi-degenerate modes split by a few kHz due to small geometrical imperfections. Since the nature and location of the geometrical imperfections are difficult to determine, variable coupling of the modes to a fixed output port results. Resonator applications require reproducible coupling to only one of these modes. This objective can be achieved by adding a larger dominant perturbation to the resonator. Results of tests show that a noncircularly-symmetric sapphire piece suspended above the resonator can provide controllable mode coupling and simultaneous frequency tuning.

Abstract

This work presents a generalized study of classical axially symmetric dual-reflector antennas. The antenna dishes are simply described by conic sections, arranged to reduce the main-reflector radiation toward the subreflector surface. The dual-reflector configuration provides a uniform-phase field distribution over the illuminated portion of the aperture, starting from a spherical-wave feed source at the antenna primary focus. All possible configurations are characterized into a total of four distinct groups. Simple closed-form design equations and the aperture field distribution are derived, in a unified way, for all these kinds of generalized antennas using the principles of geometrical optics. The formulation is applied in a parametric study to establish the configurations yielding maximum radiation efficiency (not including diffraction effects). The design procedure is exemplified in the synthesis of a novel configuration, which is further analyzed by the moment method. 28. Estudo radiológico do megacólon em área endêmica de doença de Chagas

INTRODUÇÃO: Foi realizado estudo radiológico do cólon em pacientes de zona endêmica da doença de Chagas usando-se a técnica do enema opaco simplificado de Ximenes e cols. MÉTODOS: Participaram 291 pacientes, com idade media de 48,8 (±12,5) anos, sendo 222 soropositivos para doença de Chagas. Fizeram radiografias na posição ântero-posterior, póstero-anterior e perfil lateral esquerdo, que foram analisadas por inspeção visual e medida do maior diâmetro em centímetros do reto e sigmoide. RESULTADOS: À inspeção visual, foi possível diagnosticar megacólon em 14 (6,3%) pacientes chagásicos. A média do diâmetro da ampola retal dos chagásicos 6,3 (±1,0)cm foi semelhante a dos não-chagásicos 6,2 (±1,0)cm (p=0,391) e o diâmetro médio da alça sigmoide dos chagásicos 5 (±1,6)cm foi maior que o dos não chagásicos 4,4 (±0,8 )cm, (p=0,001). CONCLUSÕES: Excluindo-se os casos de megacólon evidente e de provável megacólon, a população chagásica continuou com o diâmetro médio do sigmoide significantemente maior (p=0,003) que a não chagásica. INTRODUCTION: A radiological study on the colon of patients from an endemic Chagas disease zone was conducted using the simplified opaque enema technique of Ximenes et al. METHODS: The study involved 291 individuals with a mean age of 48.8(±12.5) years-old, of whom 222 were seropositive for Chagas disease. Anteroposterior, posteroanterior and left lateral view radiographs were analyzed by visual inspection and measurement of the largest rectal and sigmoid diameters. RESULTS: From the visual inspection, megacolon was diagnosed in 14 (6.3%) Chagas disease patients. The mean diameter of the rectal ampulla among the Chagas patients was 6.3 (±1.0)cm, similar to the measurement in non-Chagas individuals: 6.2 (±1.0) cm (p= 0.391). The mean sigmoid loop diameter in the Chagas patients was 5 (±1.6)cm, which was larger than among the non-Chagas individuals: 4.4 (±0.8)cm (p= 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: excluding the evident and probable megacolon cases, the Chagas disease population continued to present a significantly larger mean sigmoid diameter than that observed among non-Chagas individuals (p= 0.003).

Foram estudados prospectivamente 190 chagásicos, do ponto de vista clínico, eletrocardiográfico e abreugráfico do esôfago, no período médio de 13 anos, sendo encontrados 108 (56,8%) com a forma clínica inalterada, 72 (37,9%) com doença progressiva e 10 (5,3%) nos quais houve normalização do eletrocardiograma. Nos 72, em que a doença progrediu, 39 desenvolveram cardiopatia ou agravaram a já existente, 32 evoluíram para, ou pioraram o megaesôfago prévio e, 12 evoluíram para colopatia ou agravaram a já existente. Dentre os 72, 11 tinham formas clínicas associadas. A evolução da cardiopatia foi maior no sexo masculino 29,6% (21/71) que no feminino 15,1% (18/119), p = 0,015. Houve 19 casos novos de cardiopatia e 20 agravaram a cardiopatia prévia. A incidência de megaesôfago foi 14,9% (23/154) e nove agravaram o megaesôfago já existente. A evolução da colopatia foi maior no sexo feminino 9,2% (11/119), que no masculino 1,4% (1/71), p =0,026. A prospective study was performed on the clinical, electrocardiographic (ECG) and radiologic aspects of the esophagus in 190 chagasic patients, for on average follow-up period of 13 years. We found 108 (56.8%) patients who remained in the same clinical state, 72 (37.9%) patients with progressive illness and 10 (5.3%) patients whose previous ECG abnormalities subsided. Thirty nine out of 72 patients with progressive disease developed cardiopathy or aggravation of previous illness, 32 developed into megaesophagus or an existing picture deteriorated and 12 developed or showed worsening of the colopathy. Of 72 patients, 11 presented with associated forms. The development of cardiopathy was greater in males 29.6% (21/71) than in females 15.1% (18/119), p =0.015. There were 19 new cases of cardiopathy, and 20 of aggravated previous disease. The incidence of megaesophagus was 14.9% (23/154), with nine patients whose previous disease worsened. The progression of colopathy was greater in females 9.2% (11/119) than in males 1.4% (1/71), p = 0.026.

Abstract

Objetivo:Comprovar na região endêmica de Água Comprida (MG) a maior incidência de anisocoria e menor pressão intra-ocular (Po) em chagásicos anteriormente observados em outra região endêmica da doença de Chagas (Mambaí, GO). Material e métodos: Em estudo prospectivo, mascarado e pareado quanto a idade, sexo e cor, foram analisados 190 pacientes (95 pares de chagásicos e não-chagásicos). Em 84 pares, realizou-se estudo fotográfico da pupila para determinação do diâmetro pupilar e freqüências de anisocoria (diferença >0,3 mm). Em 95 pares, foi estudada a pressão intra-ocular entre chagásicos e não-chagásicos. Resultados: No grupo chagásicos foram observados 25 casos de anisocoria (29,8%) e nos não-chagásicos, 10 ocorrências (11,9%), diferença essa estatisticamente significante (p = 0,007). Não houve diferenças estatisticamente significantes para o diâmetro pupilar entre os grupos tanto para OD quanto para OE. Os chagásicos mostraram uma Po média de 11,3±2,5 mmHg em OD e de 11,3±2,4 mmHg em OE e os não-chagásicos uma Po de 13,1±2,6 e 13,1±2,5 mmHg respectivamente, diferenças essas estatisticamente significantes entre chagásicos e não-chagásicos tanto para OD quanto para OE (pOD=pOE 0.3 mm was observed. IOP was analyzed in 95 pairs. Results: 25 chagasic patients (29.8%) and 10 controls (11.9%) had anisocoria. This difference was statistically significant (p = 0.007). There were no differences in pupil diameter between chagasic patients and controls for OD or OS. Chagasic patients had a mean IOP of 11.3±2.5 mmHg (OD) and 11.3±2.4 mmHg (OS) and controls showed mean IOPs of 13.1±2.6 and 13.1±2.5 mmHg respectively. Xenodiagnoses were performed every 3 hours using 10 Triatoma infestans 3rd instar for 24 to 72 hours, in 18 chronic chagasics with positive serology and/or xenodiagnosis. There was no statistically significant difference in the positivity of assays performed during the day (9:00 to 18:00h) compared to those performed at night (21:00 to 6:00h), (chi² = 0.1526 p = 0.696). Xenodiagnosis was performed in ten of the patients for 13 successive days but there was no periodicity detected in the positive assays. Realizamos xenodiagnósticos de 3 em 3 horas com 10 ninfas do 3° estágio de Triatoma infestans por um período de 24 a 72 horas, em 18 chagásicos crônicos que tinham sorologia e/ou xenodiagnóstico positivos. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante na positividade entre os testes realizados durante o dia (9:00 às 18:00h) e à noite (21:00 às 6:00h), (chi² = 0,1526 p = 0,696). Dez dos pacientes fizeram também xenodiagnósticos diários, durante 13 dias sucessivos, não havendo periodicidade dos testes positivos.
