Introduction: To compare the incidence, characteristics, and outcomes of lactate expressors and nonexpressors in patients with severe sepsis and septic shock. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of patients with severe sepsis and septic shock who presented over a 40-month period to an academic tertiary care center. Primary outcome of interest was in-hospital mortality. Secondary outcomes were hospital length of stay (LOS), Intensive Care Unit (ICU) LOS, and escalation of care.
