Innovative foundation for noise barriers – a Deutsche Bahn pilot project with ground screws In geotechnical engineering, ground screws are often associated with lightweight constructions and are established worldwide as a foundation for solar power plants. Larger ground screw designs are currently being developed and tested as part of pilot projects. At approx. 406 mm, these ground screws have around four times the tube diameter of the above mentioned and are therefore to be classified and dimensioned as pile foundations. In contrast to conventional driven steel piles, the ground screws are driven into the ground without vibration. It is obvious that the foundation elements should be used where particular attention must be paid to noise and vibration emissions. For example, as a foundation element for noise barriers as part of the special noise remediation program for the Middle Rhine Valley. This article presents the Deutsche Bahn pilot project, provides information on the design of the large ground screws and highlights the advantages of the innovative foundation system.
