The rapid growth in number of Korean churches have led the period of quantitative revival. However, at same time, diverse problem emerged such as materialism and secularization. The main reason was due to the lack of spiritual growth of the church members. In this regard, expository preaching which provides clear understanding of the scripture and applications to live as healthy Christians is inevitable. Many preachers in the past have had interest in and tried expository preaching but they could not write down their script with elements of expository preaching due to the lack of understanding and training in this field. Additionally, they could not exceed their own ways of observing and studying because they were alone in this arena. This study suggests proper ways to understand and prepare expository preaching. This suggestion will be derived from analyzing regular gatherings of 701 Korean church for Bible studies and preparing expository preaching.

The transformative power of the Word of God is vital to the health of the church. Today, many churches in the Original East Texas Baptist Association see a considerable decline in church membership and the development of disciples due to man-centered preaching. The goal of this project is to align and realign pastors with expository preaching. The Supremacy of God, the scriptural foundation of preaching, evaluating preaching, and the original writer's intent are essential for God-centered preaching. The research methods of this project challenge preachers to pay close attention to the biblical text and expose truths that promote personal growth and enhance church health. This project will influence others in this field by reviewing and refining some traditional sermon preparation methods and exploring new approaches to sermon preparation. Professions of faith in Jesus Christ and retention of disciples are the measurable aspects as they relate to expository preaching.

Preaching by far is the primary tool used within the Body of Christ to spread the gospel throughout the world and draw people to the ecclesia (church). For centuries the fundamental approach to heralding the Word of God has been rooted in expository preaching. This theologically sound approach has been shadowed by the rise of the Charismatic Movement and its preaching. Therefore, this thesis project study foci will be on "Charismatic and Expository Preaching: A Case Study of Two Preaching Methods within the Local Church." This study is necessary to determine if these two forms of preaching can co-exist or if charismatic preaching can be incorporated as sound doctrinal preaching to edify the Body of Christ. The case study will be accomplished by theoretically and theologically comparing the data, biblical research, and the visitation of charismatic churches, particularly churches grounded in sound expository preaching. This research aims to compare the two by evaluating the churches' growth and decline using these forms of preaching and how the congregants receive the preaching of the two. The results will be valuable to the ministry in understanding the effectiveness of the two as it pertains to the church's growth and Christ as its foundation. New Hope Missionary Baptist Church was once considered charismatic with tremendous growth, with its pastor being charismatic and possessing many of the spiritual gifts that congregants gravitated to with awe. With his departure, the church had a significant decline

In America, the church is operating with less supernatural power than it once did or currently does in other parts of the world, especially as it relates to those like East Barbourville Baptist Church who belong to the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). For example, the Annual Church Profile data of the SBC for the 2018 year reveals that its overall membership has reached a thirty-year low. Likewise, the data reveals a decline in baptisms for the tenth year in a row. Yet, the church has access to more ministry tools and better training than any previous generation, so what is the problem? The project director believes that the problem is tied to the prayerlessness of the contemporary congregation. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to confront and correct the prayerlessness of East Barbourville Baptist Church through the use of expository sermons. With that said, the project director will survey the congregation to evaluate the quality of their prayer life. Using the results of the survey as a baseline measurement for the congregation's prayer lives, he will then rely upon the use of expository sermons to equip and empower the congregation to improve the time they spend in prayer. Afterwards, the project director will survey the congregation to identity the impact that the expository sermons have had in the prayer lives of the congregation.

In this thesis, biblical expository preaching is defined as the exegetical method that brings out the theological nuances of a narrative biblical passage in relation to content and context. Biblical expository preaching in the USA is facing a significant theological challenge as churches are becoming culturally diverse. Research has shown that theological understanding plays a great role in Christian spiritual formation; it has also shown that believers are generally more receptive to sermons that are contextualized. This thesis project aims to determine how biblical expository preaching can make sense to believers and spur them on to spiritual maturity in a diverse context. Building on existing works by homiletic experts, it asks: to what extent does biblical expository preaching affect Christian spiritual formation in a multi-ethnic diverse Christian community? The researcher selected ten participants based on their racial and ethnic backgrounds and interviewed them via Zoom. Analysis of their responses demonstrated that the participants associated biblical expository preaching with connectivity, meaning, and relevance of the Word of God to the lives of believers. These results indicate that biblical expository preaching has great significance in the life of a church. On this basis, this thesis project recommends further studies that use incarnational theology as a key factor to understand biblical expository preaching in multi-ethnic communities.

Expository teaching is a method of explanation that can raise the biblical understanding in the minds of those receiving the teaching. This paper studies a group of participants from Stonepath Church who receive three expository teaching lessons on three biblical passages on worship. The initial understanding of biblical worship is gauged by the scores of the participants on a worship survey taken before the first lesson, and the increase in biblical knowledge is gauged by the scores of the participants on the same worship survey taken after the third lesson. A statistical analysis is run to determine whether or not the increase in test scores is significant. This paper assumes if the congregants at Stonepath Church receive a series of expository teaching lessons on biblical worship using pericopes from biblical passages, then the congregants who participate in this study will gain a clearer understanding of biblical worship.

The purpose of this thesis project is to propose an effective strategy for preparing Christ-Centered, Gospel-Driven, Expository Sermons (CGES) by developing an effective methodology for redemptive sermon preparation. Many contemporary churches today often have multiple preaching pastors and preaching teams, many of which have little to no seminary training in homiletics, yet even those that do, recognize that a seminary education does not necessarily mean that competency in preaching exists merely due to the education or degree earned. Due to talented and gifted pastors with multiple approaches to sermon preparation, it is imperative that preachers have a proper homiletical process, to avoid the pitfall of preparing non-redemptive sermons. Theoretical and biblical research was conducted on sermon preparation and the potential benefits of committing to the CGES approach through relevant literature and articles on homiletics. Based on surveys sent to current preaching pastors, the present situation of sermon preparation and homiletics was assessed. To prove the benefits and possible applications of CGES, several biblical and homiletical discourses were analyzed, and homiletic applications were presented from the results of analyzing discourse structures. Findings in this study were integrated to develop an appropriate process intended to aid pastors in utilizing the CGES for preparing sermons.

This study compares and contrasts two styles of preaching (Topical and Expository) at the First Free Will Baptist Church from 2005 - 2015. The objective of this study was to find if one method of preaching is more effective, biblical, and preferred for a congregation. The strategy for this mixed research is to deploy multi-choice questions to capture quantitative data on the impact of the sermons on the listeners, and an open-ended question on the application aspect for qualitative data on the listeners' responses. Based on the results of the listener response questionnaire, recommendations were given based on the sermon survey responses. While many heated debates pitting topical against expository sermons within homiletical theory and practice, few authors, studies, and discourse have focused on the opinions, perceptions, and feelings of the hearers of the sermons. This project sought to weigh the hearers' views on the debate. The findings of this study demonstrate that survey results favored both preaching styles. Whereas topical sermons appeared to be selected by participants as having an overall advantage over expository sermons based on the evaluation items, the sampled expository sermon forms possessed overall significant strengths as well.

This project was designed to instruct the congregation of Fort Howard Community Church in the doctrine of the Holy Spirit through expository preaching. Chapter 1 introduces the need to teach systematic theology in general, and the doctrine Holy Spirit in particular, to the congregation through expository preaching and includes the purpose and goals of the project. Chapter 2 examines the biblical and theological basis for the doctrine of the Holy Spirit by studying ten aspects of the Holy Spirit. Chapter 3 details the theoretical and practical issues of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit focusing on the Spirit's primary role today and the Spirit's and Christian's roles in sanctification. Chapter 4 details the implementation and results of the project. Chapter 5 assesses the project and shares a personal reflection of the project.

This project sought to improve my ability to prepare and deliver expository sermons that have a Spirit-empowered transformational impact on the postmodern generation at Harvest Bible Chapel, London. Chapter 1 presents the purpose, goals, context, rationale, definitions, limitations, and research methodology of the project. Chapter 2 provides the biblical and theological mandate for expository preaching in weekend services for all churches seeking to be faithful to the mission given to them by God. Chapter 3 discusses the core elements of communication in relation to teaching and learning. Included is an examination of the current philosophies of teaching and learning and how these have influenced preaching in the church. Chapter 4 describes the ministry project including each of the eight weeks of preaching, surveys, and focus groups. Chapter 5 provides and evaluation of the purpose and goals of the project, including theological reflections, strengths and weaknesses of the project, and what I would do differently, should I do this project again.

This thesis examines Martin Luther as an expository preacher. Contemporary authors such as Ewald Plass, Peter Brooks, Fred Meuser, Sydney Greidanus, James MacKinnon, John MacArthur, and Hughes Oliphant Old describe Luther as an expository preacher, yet none of them clarifies how or in what way they reach that conclusion. To that end, chapter 1 introduces Luther as a preacher and the need for this study. Chapter 2 defines modern expository theory and presents a four-fold method for creating faithful, expository sermons. Chapter 3 tracks Luther's change in hermeneutic from a medieval, allegorical approach to a Christ-centered, historical-grammatical method. Luther's postils (sermons on lectionary readings) are used to demonstrate his hermeneutical shift. Chapter 4 samples Luther's catechetical preaching, lectionary preaching, and verse-by-verse exposition of the Fourth Gospel to reveal in what ways he can be deemed an expository preacher and a forerunner of modern expository theory. Chapter 5 draws implications from Luther's expository methods that can benefit the church today, as well as expressing the need for additional research.

This project consists of a series of sermons preached through the first chapter of the Gospel of Mark with a special emphasis on examining the text through the lens of biblical theology. In particular, this includes seeing Mark's first chapter through the lens of redemptive history. Mark presents Jesus' ministry as the inauguration of the kingdom of God which brings the fulfillment of salvation promises made in the Old Testament. Mark uses both explicit quotation and implicit references to numerous Old Testament texts to give the full significance of Jesus' arrival. Specifically, Jesus brings the kingdom of God with a power that both pushes back the kingdom of Satan, as displayed in his authoritative teaching and ministry of exorcism, and invites men to enter God's kingdom through sacrificial faith and repentance.

Chapter 1 explains the purpose of the project: to teach leaders at Redeemer Church how to apply the OT Minor Prophets christocentrically rather than moralistically through an expositional sermon series on Micah. The goals were to increase the leaders' knowledge on how to interpret Christ from the OT Minor Prophets and increase their affections for Christ. The purpose and goals were accomplished through eleven sermons, four seminars, and two focus group sessions. Chapter 2 explains how the Bible both demands teachers preach Christ from the OT Minor Prophets as well as provides a christocentric method. Luke 24:13-27, Matthew 5:17, Peter's use of Joel 2 in Acts 2, the use of Micah 5:2 in Matthew 2:6, and Matthew 28:19-20 are all explained to establish the case for the christocentric method. Chapter 3 moves from the biblical case for christocentric preaching in chapter 2 to establishing a method. Chapter 3 provides a case for biblical authority as grounds for a case for expository preaching, which then bridges to a case for redemptive expository preaching. A christocentric method is explained which leans heavily on Chapell's "Fallen Condition Focus" and Griedanus' "7 Ways to Christ."

The primary purpose of this dissertation is to present a Christ-saturated approach to expository preaching. To accomplish this goal, I evaluate the hermeneutics and homiletics of Christ-centered approaches to preaching. In doing so, Christ-saturated preaching has all of the strengths of Christ-centered preaching while resolving some of the inherent hermeneutical and homiletical difficulties in prevailing models of Christ-centered preaching. Chapter 1 explores some confused and complicated definitions of Christ-centered approaches to preaching, examines the current hermeneutical and homiletical issues of Christ-centered approaches to preaching, and states the necessity to present an alternative approach to preaching Christ. Chapter 2 traces the history of Christ-centered preaching back to the controversy between the exemplaristic preaching and redemptive-historical preaching that raged in the Netherlands in the 1940s. At the same time, this chapter explores how redemptive-historical preaching influenced the American pulpit through Geerhardus Vos, Edmund Clowney, Dennis Johnson, Sidney Greidanus, Graeme Goldsworthy, and Bryan Chapell. Chapter 3 examines various definitions and justification of Christ-centered approaches to preaching. This is an essential step toward evaluating the hermeneutics and homiletics of Christ-centered preaching in chapters 4 and 5. Chapter 4 analyzes and evaluates the hermeneutics of Christ-centered approaches to preaching by comparing and contrasting their interpretive methods and ways to find the meaning of the text, the author’s intent, and Christ from every text through Christ-centered biblical theology. Chapter 5 explores the homiletics of Christ-centered preaching, focusing on the ways of finding Christ or a connection to Christ and of applying the text and its significance to the audience. In addition, the homiletics of Christ-centered preaching is evaluated, determining whether or not Christ-centered messages satisfy the pastoral context and the needs of the audience. Chapter 6 suggests some disciplines of a Christ-saturated approach to expository preaching, which satisfies the pastoral context and the needs of the audience as well as the author’s intended meaning and his theology. This chapter concludes that Christ-centered preaching not only neglects the unique features of the text and the author’s intent and theology, but it also ignores the context of the audience. Christ-saturated preaching can be an alternative to preaching the Word of God while still respecting the text and the context of the audience.

This thesis argues that expository preaching represents the best way for pastors to lead church members in personal evangelism. Chapter 1 argues that leading through expository preaching to evangelize personally is not found in most writings. Chapter 2 asserts that a pastor must "preach the Word" (2 Tim 4:2), thus he must expound the NT biblical mandate for all believers to evangelize personally (Matt 28:19-20; Mark 16:15; Luke 24:49; John 20:21; and Acts 1:8). Chapter 3 establishes an expository preaching strategy from the book of Acts to demonstrate how believers can be led to evangelize personally. Chapter 4 examines the expository preaching ministry of Jerry Vines by focusing on his theological convictions about the Bible, Holy Spirit, and prayer, followed by his practical applications of expository preaching and personal evangelism. Chapter 5 explores the practical implications how an effective, evangelistic pastor may lead, specifically how he leads best through an expository preaching ministry from the pulpit and beyond.

This thesis asserts that the foundational way pastors lead believers to fulfill their mission as a church comes through an expository preaching ministry. Chapter 2 establishes the priority of expository preaching in shaping and defining the mission of the church. This chapter examines the ministry of Moses in Deuteronomy as a method and model for the integration of shepherd leadership with expository preaching. Chapter 3 illustrates the expository preaching ministry and spiritual leadership of Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels, especially Luke 4 and 24, in leading the New Covenant people of God to fulfill their mission. Chapter 4 examines how many of the early sermons in Acts reveal that the apostles employed Jesus' preaching method. This chapter displays how the Epistles define the office and responsibilities of a pastor demonstrating the need to integrate leading with preaching. Chapter 5 presents the implementation of leading through expository preaching in the local church.

This project facilitates the members of Angel Fire Baptist Church in Angel Fire, New Mexico, to apply Old Testament narrative properly. The project consisted of three goals: to assist church members to increase their awareness of how they apply Old Testament narrative; to equip project participants using the method of application developed in the project; and to model application of Old Testament narrative through an expository preaching series from Genesis 37-50. The goals of the project were accomplished through the use of questionnaires, training, preaching, and guided sermon reflections. Chapter 1 introduces the project by establishing the project's purpose and goals in light of the ministry context of Angel Fire Baptist Church. The research methodology for the project is presented within the definitions, limitations and delimitations of the project. Chapter 2 analyzes various existing models of applying Old Testament narrative. The chapter begins by establishing biblical guidelines for application and then analyzes the models in light of these guidelines. The models evaluated were the Theocentric model, the Christological model, and the Redemptive-Historical Christocentric model. The chapter closes by proposing a Text-driven, Gospel-driven model for application of Old Testament narrative based on the Redemptive-Historical Christocentric model. Chapter 3 models the Text-driven, Gospel-driven model through a sermon series preached from the Joseph narrative of Genesis 37-50. The series consisted of twelve sermons; two introductory sermons and ten sermons on the Joseph narrative. For each of the ten sermons, the main point is summarized, handles for application are identified, and questions are asked which move to the gospel in application. Chapter 4 describes the methodology used to complete the project, and provides conclusions concerning the project’s effectiveness in modeling application of Old Testament narrative through expository preaching. Chapter 5 evaluates the project’s effectiveness and offers some reflections and conclusions. Strengths and weaknesses of the project are identified and discussed in terms of their effect on the project’s overall effectiveness. The reflections interact with some established writings on application and conclude that the project is harmonious with the call to apply the Old Testament in the light of the gospel. The Text-driven, Gospel-driven model for the application of Old Testament narrative is an effective tool for helping God’s people mature in their understanding of the Scripture and for applying the Scripture to their lives in the light of the gospel.

This dissertation examines the preaching ministry of John Newton as a model of biblical exposition that was guided by a gospel-centric, pastoral homiletic. Chapter 1 defines the thesis of this dissertation , introduces the subject of this dissertation by surveying the scholarly work that has concentrated on Newton’s life and ministry, and demonstrates the lack of focused study on Newton’s preaching. Chapter 2 is a biographical survey of Newton’s life and ministry. Chapter 3 serves as an introduction to Newton’s preaching by surveying Newton’s sermons and demonstrates that Newton’s preaching should be regarded as expository. Attention is also given to the eighteenth-century historical context in which Newton preached. Chapter 4 argues that Newton’s high view of Scripture served as a foundation of his ministry and preaching. Chapter 5 is a discussion of Newton’s Christ-centered piety with regard to its impact on his life, ministry and preaching. Chapter 6 maintains that Newton’s Christ-centered spirituality is evident in his gospel-centric preaching and the homiletical methods that guided him. Chapter 7 examines Newton’s preaching and his commitment to pastoral ministry. It argues that Newton’s preaching rhetoric was a function of a pastoral homiletic that was deeply concerned with the spiritual welfare of his hearers. The final chapter summarizes the major points of dissertation and reflects on the importance of the use of historical models like Newton for contemporary preaching.

Chapter 1 explains the purpose and the need for the project. The chapter covers the goals, the ministry context, the limitations, and the methodology behind how the project would be carried out. Chapter 2 shows the importance of both biblical and theological reasons for utilizing expository preaching in order to proclaim accurately the doctrines of Christ. Highlighted in this chapter are the importance of doctrine, the importance of expository preaching, and the importance of the church rightly articulating the gospel. Chapter 3 details the claims of Mormonism seen in contrast to the Christian faith. Scholars and theologians on both sides of the issue are examined and the chasm between the two faiths are exposed. Chapter 4 presents the details of the completed project. Included in this chapter are the schedule of the project, the process described in order to evaluate the project, and a summary of each of the sermons. Chapter 5 unveils an analysis of the project. Each aspect of the pre- and post-sermon survey are reviewed, as well as and the results of changes in attitudes or beliefs concerning expository preaching and three essential Christological doctrines.

Chapter 1 introduces the subject of this dissertation, which deals with the relationship between a biblical text's substance and structure to that of a sermon's substance and structure from that text. After stating the thesis of this dissertation-- that expository preaching considers the arrangement of the text, is sensitive to the genre of the text and aware of the rhetorical impact of the text in order to faithfully and effectively communicate the Word of God-- the introduction outlines the approach that this work follows. Chapter 2 begins by exploring the origin of inspiration as that of both divine and human. B. B. Warfield refers to this divine-human cooperation as the Spirit of God working confluently through the work of men. The chapter emphasizes how this divine-human cooperation came through a verbal-plenary view of inspiration. If inspiration extends to not only the writer's thoughts but also his words, then the literary forms in the Bible are equally inspired. Therefore, the extent of the doctrine of inspiration to that of genre is of great importance to this dissertation. Chapter 3 describes the importance of hermeneutics and genre. I state my presupposition for authorial intent and single meaning of the text. Upon this authorial intent and single meaning foundation, I discuss principles for hermeneutics in general. More specifically, I establish the crucial role of literary sensitivity in the hermeneutical task. Essential in understanding the genre is an awareness of surface and notional structures, as well as what the author is doing (speech act) through that particular genre (structure). In short, to ignore literary form, as D. A. Carson insists, is to fall prey of two dangers: to insist that Scripture is saying what in fact it is not saying or to indeed miss what Scripture is saying what in fact it is not saying or to indeed miss what Scripture is actually saying. The chapter provides interpretative guidelines for genre sensitivity by exploring five primary genres found in the Bible. Chapter 4 discusses the aim of rhetoric and, in particular, the significance of the canon of arrangement on a given discourse. After discussing the aim of rhetoric and homiletics as that of persuasion for maximum impact, this chapter focuses upon the canon of arrangement and, thus, the reality that structure argues. The chapter then offers similarities and differences of the canon of arrangement with that of expository homiletics. Chapter 5 synthesizes a textually-arranged, genre-sensitive, rhetorically-informed homiletic. The chapter explores two areas of relevance for preaching: the need for head and heart and the need for textual sermonic structure. In particular, the first section deals with the primacy of preaching holistically. The second section addresses the necessary importance of textual sermonic structure around the consideration of biblical genre. The section offers sermonic examples from five genres, considering generic structures and rhetorical aim. The section concludes with a structural analysis of two sermons.

This dissertation examines sermon application in the doctrinal preaching of John Piper. The work argues that Piper's use of application is characterized by multifaceted purpose and the qualities of consistency, creativity, clarity, recurrence, cumulative and/or climactic effect, and contextualization. The critical model utilized involves three primary components: quality, purpose, and doctrine. A representative sample of 700 sermons is analyzed, spanning Piper's thirty-plus years in the pulpit. Chapter 1 clarifies the thesis, presents an overview of the dissertation's methodology, and provides research delimitations and background information. Attention is given to the motivations behind the research and the importance of the study. Chapter 2 presents biographical material so that the reader may better understand and appreciate Piper's practice in the pulpit. His identity as a person, pastor-theologian, and preacher is explored. Chapter 3 addresses the process of study, surveying selected literature on doctrinal preaching and sermon application. Key terms such as doctrinal preaching and sermon application are defined. Moreover, the vital connection between doctrinal preaching and sermon application is demonstrated. Chapter 4 discusses the study's methodology and describes in detail both the object and method of analysis. The critical model employed, which guided the research, is thoroughly discussed, including the six qualities of sermon application (consistency, creativity, clarity, recurrence, cumulative and/or climactic effect, and contextualization), the four purposes of sermon application (duty, character, goals, and discernment), and the doctrines applied. Chapter 5 presents a segregated analysis of Piper's preaching utilizing the critical model described in chapter 4. Research findings are thoroughly discussed, in terms of the six qualities, four purposes, and doctrines applied. Chapter 6 presents an integrated analysis of Piper's doctrinal preaching. Patterns of quality, purpose, doctrine, and co-occurrence are emphasized. Also, the interplay of quality, purpose, and doctrine is demonstrated. Furthermore, development over time and across select sermon series is assessed. Chapter 7 concludes the project, presenting a summary of findings, key insights, major implications, and suggestions for future research. Defining characteristics of Piper's method are outlined, specifically in terms of the six qualities, the four purposes, and the doctrines applied.

The purpose of this dissertation is to discover the value of imagination for expository preaching. The thesis of this dissertation is that a rightly developed evangelical theory and use of imagination will improve the practice of expository hermeneutics and homiletics. In the introductory chapter, the challenging nature of imagination is examined. Despite its subjective challenging nature, imagination is an important subject for expository preaching. Imagination is necessary in order to improve both hermeneutics and homiletics. The second chapter provides an overview of expository preaching. Essential elements of expository preaching, author-centered hermeneutics and audience-focused homiletics, are discussed to form the backdrop against which imagination is to be examined. Second, the concept of imagination is introduced and explained. Chapter 3 demonstrates how the New Homiletic methodology deals with imagination in preaching., After a brief introduction to the basic philosophy of the New Homiletic, the work of two new homileticians, Paul Scott Wilson and Thomas H. Troeger, is discussed. They are important, because they were one of the first to devote an entire work to imagination and preaching. This chapter concludes with a critical evaluation of their methods in light of evangelical expository preaching. Chapter 4 presents suggestions for the use of imagination in expository hermeneutics. In particular, the role of imagination in specific steps of the exegetical process is explained. Furthermore, boundaries are discussed that ensure imagination is used in way that is faithful to the biblical text and the author's intention. Chapter 5 suggests how imagination can be used in homiletics. Committed to a hermeneutic that is faithful to the text and the author's intention, preachers can find in imagination a rich resource to convey God's truth to people.

This project was designed to develop active or potential preachers in Kindred Community Church and other from the Southern California area in the basics of expository preaching. Chapter 1 outlines the ministry context at Kindred Community Church, Anaheim Hills, California, the project's purpose, and the project's goals. Chapter 2 examines biblical and theological rationale for expository preaching as the only biblical model of preaching. Chapter 3 investigates the importance of illustrations for sermon effectiveness, and provides methods for effective use of illustrations. This project aimed to educate and motivate church members with the New Testament purposes of the church through expository preaching. Chapter 2 exposed the modern crisis in Christian ecclesiology and provided a cure through a renewed understanding of God's purposes for the local church as indicated in the Great Commission. Chapter 3 aimed to improve sermon application in expository preaching. This chapter revealed the necessity of application in expository preaching and offered solutions for improvement. Chapter 4 outlined the sermons used in the project, described the various surveys and feedback groups, and presented the project's schedule. Chapter 5 offered an analysis of the project's goals, data, survey results, strengths and weaknesses, things done differently, and theological and personal reflections. Chapter 3 examines the practical issues of proper application. A definition that proves a balance of exposition and application is developed from five scholars. This chapter describes the need, nature, and guidelines of application in relation to expository preaching along with pitfalls to avoid. Chapter four is a presentation of the ministry project. Chapter 5 is an evaluation of the project which is evaluated on the bases of the goals set forth in chapter one. Strengths and weaknesses are identified, along with recommendations for improvement. This Doctor of Ministry project examines the biblical and practical rationale for the use of illustrations in expository preaching. Chapter 1 gives an introduction to the topic and gives the ministry context for which the project was conducted. Chapter 2 is an examination of some key passages from both the Old and New Testaments relevant to illustration. Particular emphasis is given to Ecclesiastes 12:9-11, Ezekiel 37:1-14, Hosea 3:1, Acts 17:28, Romans 10:14, and 2 Corinthians 4:7. Chapter 3 focuses on examples of how to illustrate points in expository preaching. Principles are given on how to determine the needs of the original audience as well as a contemporary audience. Framing the illustration and filling the frame are examined. Donald Grey Barnhouse and Charles Swindoll are given as examples and brief commentary is provided. Chapter 4 reports the results of a 15-week project. The project includes project methodology, data collection, and analysis. Chapter 5 is an evaluation of the entire project. The evaluation includes the project's purpose, goals, strengths, weaknesses, theological reflections and personal reflections.

This project utilizes expository preaching in preaching the parables in Luke 14-16 at Medway Baptist Church. Chapter 1 identifies both the project and the community surrounding Medway Baptist Church. Chapter 2 contains the exposition of four selected parables focusing on context, theological implications and the main idea of each parable. Chapter 3 focuses on the principles for interpreting parables such as historical and cultural context, lexical and syntactical context, the main idea of the parable, and literal versus figurative language. The methodology of the project is found in chapter 4 as it relates to the recruitment process, meetings, and a summary of each chapter. Chapter 5 evaluates the success of the project by the feedback of the participants and reflection of the goals.

This project works to establish a pattern of christocentric expository preaching at Grace Fellowship, Anniston, Alabama. Chapter 1 outlines the limits of the project, sets the context of Grace Fellowship, and defines christocentric expository preaching. Chapter 1 also serves as the introduction to the project as a body of work. Chapter 2 begins with an analysis of important passages of Scripture that form the foundation of a christocentric approach to expository preaching. The chapter focuses on the preaching of the apostles as a model of preaching for pastors in our day. Chapter 3 compares christocentric preaching to two alternate approaches of preaching. Both methods are analyzed using the preaching ministry of prominent advocates of the preaching style. Chapter 4 gives the details of the work completed during the fifteen-week project that was conducted at Grace Fellowship. The three main elements of the project are evaluated and reported for the reader to analyze this project. Chapter 5 is the final chapter in this ministry project. It seeks to summarize the conclusions of the project and suggests ways this project can be improved.

The purpose of this project was to improve the preaching at White Rock Baptist Church through the intentional use of variety in sermon structure and delivery. The project laid a biblical foundation for variety in expository preaching by considering the Lord's use of different but complementary methods to proclaim truth and by examining six sermons from the Acts of the Apostles. A study of the works of a number of homileticians corroborated the concept that true expository preaching actually elicits rich variety. Such variety is best achieved by an organic rather than a mechanical approach. The thesis was tested in a series of twelve sermons on the Acts of the Apostles by means of two related questionnaires. The survey confirmed that preaching is indeed improved by variety in sermon structure and delivery, provided that such variety derives from a creative exposition of the passage at hand.

The Word of God was given to the world to move human beings to faith and obedience. It is the role of the expositor to release that Word with all of its potency by faithfully communicating every aspect of every passage. Each passage of Scripture has a personal aspect designed to radically change both the heart and life of the expositor so that he becomes the message to his hearers. Among the Old Testament prophets, Jeremiah particularly models and informs this personal aspect of Scripture. The purpose of this paper is to show that using Jeremiah to develop the personal aspect of expository preaching produces measurable movement in both the expositor and in his hearers. This will bring the expositor into deep, personal involvement with the message in order to unlock the life changing potency of the passage in every sermon.

This project is an attempt to teach Harlan Baptist Church (Kentucky) the unity of the Bible using the Old Testament covenants. Chapter 1 provides an introduction for the entire project. It is the basis, the context, and the objective for teaching the unity of the Scriptures and the story of redemption. Chapter 2 is an exegetical and theological analysis of the Old Testament covenants and the New Covenant from the significant covenant texts of the Bible. Chapter 3 is an examination of preaching Old Testament narrative and prophetic literature in a faithful and Christocentric way. Chapter 4 describes the preaching project and seminar used in an effort to grow as an expositor and teach the church the unity of the Bible. Chapter 5 summarizes and evaluates the information and data gathered from the project.

This project was designed to train laymen in expository preaching through a combination of teaching, practice, and evaluation. Chapter 1 serves as an introduction to Faith Bible Church and the community in which the church is located. The demographics of the region and church are described, along with the history of the church. As many ministry leaders have occasion to preach regularly and have not had formal training in preaching, a preaching workshop is suggested as a means of improving their sermon preparation and delivery. Chapter 2 discusses the biblical and theological mandate for preaching to consistently connect to the person and work of Jesus. If Christ is the center of the Bible's story, then expositional preaching should have a Christocentric element. The regular neglect of the gospel in preaching has danger for the preacher and the congregation. Such redemptive preaching is a biblical priority and vital for the church's long-term health. Chapter 3 addresses the variety of hermeneutically legitimate methods by which the gospel may be linked to a biblical passage which lacks explicit reference to the person and work of Jesus. A number of viable methods are examined. These methods do not diminish the need for and value of moral exhortation in preaching. Chapter 4 explains the actual implementation of the training process. Questionnaires and sermon evaluation forms are used to assess the value of the preaching workshop for the instructor and the participants. Chapter 5 presents the analysis and evaluation of the ministry project. Goals are evaluated and the strengths and weaknesses of the training methodology are reflected upon. Feedback from participants and personal reflections are shared, with implications for further study.

The purpose of this project is to improve application in preaching while teaching lay leaders how to recognize, evaluate and appreciate proper application in expository preaching at Racine Bible Church, Wisconsin. A curriculum teaching accuracy in interpretation alongside of relevancy in application is developed and presented in an eight week course. Upon completion of this course, select members evaluate application in exposition. Both the initial curriculum delivery and the subsequent evaluative process are narrated in this project.

This project was designed to create increased appreciation in the congregation's understanding of how and why Old Testament narrative is important and relevant for their spiritual lives. Chapter 1 outlines the ministry context at Hope Fellowship Church, the project's purpose and the project's goals. Chapter 2 examines the biblical and theological rationale that Old Testament narrative is important for Christians. Chapter 3 examines the homiletical concerns associated with Esther and Christological approaches for preaching the narrative. Chapter 4 is a review of the implementation of the project's three inter-related components: a ten week expository preaching series through the book of Esther; sermon based small groups, known as Berean Heart Groups; and four weeks of Sunday school classes. Chapter 5 is an analysis of the surveys taken by the congregants of Hope Fellowship before and after the project and demonstrates that the church indeed benefited from this project.

This project teaches the providence of God through the use of historical illustrations in expository sermons. Chapter 1 addresses the context of ministry at Pioneer Baptist Church, Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Also an introduction to the significance and scope of this project presented. In chapter 2, a defense of providence and historical illustration is given from Scripture. An exegesis of Matthew 16:18 forms the basis for the sermon series and project. Chapter 3 examines the biblical doctrine of providence as well as comparing and contrasting five common views. Chapter 4 details the process of the project step by step and gives the sermon texts, titles and historical illustrations. Chapter 5 serves as an analysis of the effectiveness of the project to meet the goals, reflecting on strengths and weaknesses of the project as it occurred as well as offering changes that should take place if a similar project were undertaken again.

This research project sought to incorporate lay leaders in the preparation, evaluation, and application of expository messages at Bethany Community Church, Washington, Illinois. Chapter 1 introduces the goals for and an overview of the project. Chapter 2 explores the relationship between the pastor and the plurality of shepherds from a biblical perspective. It considers the prominent teaching role of a single pastor/elder while also contending that all elders bear responsibility for the pulpit ministry of the church. Chapter 3 examines the dynamics of teams and how they accomplish tasks, looking at several examples of churches seeking to incorporate teams into the pulpit ministry. Chapter 4 details the actual carrying out of the project. In chapter 5 the project is evaluated, concluding that the research project proved to be effective in incorporating lay leadership into the expository preaching ministry at Bethany Community Church in Washington, Illinois.

During the years of my pastoral ministry, I have observed many Christians who were unable to find comfort in the gospel when they encountered troubles in their lives. This became a deep concern in two ways. First, my people were hurting, and I could not seem to offer them sufficient help in the gospel. My second concern was where the members of the church might turn for help. Chapter 1 outlines the project goals, context, rationale, and definitions that grew out of these concerns. Chapter 2 grounds the task of preaching, which is central to this project, in the New Testament. It provides relevant theological and historical insights that establish the nature and importance of gospel soul care, drawing heavily on the example of the English Puritans. As Chapter 3 explains, the Puritans' keen insight into the human soul forced me to face some contemporary complications in gospel soul care, especially our modern professional and therapeutic approach to ministry. This research was combined with practical work at LaGrange Baptist Church in LaGrange, Kentucky, as described in Chapter 4 and evaluated in Chapter 5.

This dissertation proposes and analyzes the integration of doctrine and expository preaching for the twenty-first century. Chapter 1 traces the recent history of doctrinal preaching and expository preaching. Problems related to postmodernism, the New Homiletic, and the changes within contemporary evangelicalism also receive treatment. Chapter 2 defines and blends the definitions of expository preaching and doctrinal preaching. These definitions form the basis for defining doctrinal expository preaching. Several doctrinal prerequisites of an expositor conclude this section. Chapter 3 examines the biblical basis for doctrinal exposition. The semantic domain for preaching and the Bible's practitioners of doctrinal exposition support this basis. Chapter 4 incorporates the disciplines of biblical and systematic theology for the task of theological interpretation. Moreover, principles for theological exegesis of literary genres prepare the expositor for the homiletical process. The chapter concludes with steps in the doctrinal expository sermon process as well as with two valid approaches for implementing doctrinal exposition. Chapter 5 covers postmodern issues of truth, entertainment, language, image, and story. Also, the subject of applying doctrine is discussed. Observations of valuable doctrines for contemporary evangelicalism end this section. Chapter 6 describes many practicalities of doctrinal exposition. A summary concludes the work. This study argues for the need to integrate doctrine and expository preaching for the twenty-first century. Furthermore, this work proposes doctrinal exposition distinctively, biblically, theologically, and practically. In order for preachers to declare the whole counsel of God, sermons must employ doctrinal exposition.
