Objective. To estimate the prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. in dual-purpose calves on cattle ranches in Veracruz, Mexico. Materials and methods. A cross-sectional epidemiological study was carried out in five municipalities from the center of Veracruz. The animals included in the study were calves between 1 and 60 days old. Stool samples were taken directly from the rectum. The modified Faust centrifugation technique was used to concentrate oocysts and Direct Immunofluorescent Test for their detection. In each ranch surveys were applied to know the characteristics of the animals and their management. General and specific prevalence was estimated. Variables were analyzed using the univariate Chi-square test to determine possible epidemiological associations. Results. The overall prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. was 69.9%, and the municipality with the highest prevalence was Tlalixcoyan (96.6%). No significant difference was found between the age, sex, breed and consistency of the feces of the calves. The ranch (R9) was the only factor associated with Cryptosporidium spp. in the calves studied. Conclusions. There is a high prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. in calves from dual purpose cattle ranches from the center of Veracruz, Mexico. Future studies are required to determine the predominant species and genotypes in the region for an integral understanding of the transmission dynamics and zoonotic potential of this protozoan. Introduction and objectives: To estimate the frequency of patients with diagnoses associated with life-limiting conditions (LLCs) or complex chronic conditions (CCCs). Methods: Retrospective mixed population-based and hospital-based cohort study. Study universe consisted of the population aged less than 18 years of an autonomous community in Spain in the 2001–2021 period; the cases were patients admitted to hospital with a diagnosis associated with LLC or CCC during this period. We estimated age-adjusted annual prevalences and analysed changes in trends using joinpoint regression. Results: The prevalence of LLCs increased significantly from 20.7 per 10 000 inhabitants under 18 years in 2001 to 51.3 per 10 000 in 2019. There was also a significant increase in CCCs from 39.9 per 10 000 in 2001 to 54.4 per 10 000 in 2019. The prevalence of patients with any of these conditions rose from 45 per 10 000 in 2001 to 86.8 per 10 000 in 2019; 30.3% of these patients had conditions of both types. There was a turning point in this increasing trend between 2019 and 2020, coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions: The prevalence of patients requiring specialized care has increased progressively in the last 20 years, similar to what has happened in other countries. The magnitude of the affected population must be taken into account when planning specialized paediatric palliative care and complex chronic care services.

Introduction: oral mucosa lesions (OML) are any abnormal variations in appearance, color, texture, swelling, or loss of integrity of the oral mucosa. The worldwide prevalence varies from 4.9 % to 64.7 %. This study aimed to determine the frequency of oral lesions in patients who consult the Facultad de Odontología, Universidad de Antioquia, Medellín, Colombia. Methodology: a cross-sectional study was carried out using a structured instrument with sociodemographic, clinical, and habit variables and systematic clinical examination according to the WHO. Statistical analysis was univariate and bivariate, calculating the average and standard deviation for the age variable and absolute and relative frequencies for each sociodemographic and clinical variable. Chi-square tests were done for differences in proportions. Results: 539 patients, the average age was 35.2 years (SD=23.5 years). The frequency of patients with oral lesions was 75.9 % (409). Statistically significant differences were found between the number of lesions and age, use, and type of appliances. Orthodontic appliances were the most common cause of injury (43.1 %). The most frequent lesions were traumatic (68.2 %), followed by vascular (22 %), exfoliative cheilitis (20 %), infectious (17.1 %), and reactive (5.13 %). Conclusions: the prevalence of OML in this population is high, with women mainly affected. The study highlights the importance of making a systematic clinical examination and correlating the findings with the patient's history to establish a diagnosis, prognosis, and appropriate treatment.

- Abstract
Introduction: Acute cholecystitis is one of the most common complications of cholelithiasis. In Colombia, there are no studies on its prevalence or the sociodemographic characteristics of the affected population. Objectives: To establish the prevalence of acute cholecystitis in Colombia and describe the associated sociodemographic characteristics. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the individual service provision records (RIPS) from 2018 to 2022. Results: A total of 343,254 cases of acute cholecystitis were identified in Colombia, with a prevalence of 681 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and a female-to-male ratio of 2.3:1. The highest number of reported cases was in the 34 to 39-year age group. The departments with the most cases are located in the southeast of the country, including Nariño, Valle del Cauca, Caquetá, and Tolima. Conclusion: This study presents epidemiological and sociodemographic information on acute cholecystitis in Colombia. There are few epidemiological studies on this disease in Latin America, however, the prevalence found is similar to that reported in countries like the United States. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The lower second molar mostly has a C configuration and it is important to know the internal anatomy and classification to have a better clinical approach, so the objective was to evaluate the prevalence and types of C-shaped canals in permanent mandibular second molars by using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: 150 CTHC images of mandibular second molars were used. The following was recorded: sex, presence of Cshaped canal, location, morphology and type of C configuration according to Fan's classification, which is divided into C1, C2, C3 (c and d), C4 and C5. The chi-square test was used to analyze the differences between groups (p=0.05, considered a statistically significant difference). Results: Of the 300 teeth evaluated, 12.6% had C-shaped canals. There were no statistically significant differences between C-shaped canals and sex. This configuration tends to appear bilaterally, however, when it appears unilaterally, we find it mostly on the right. At the level of the pulp chamber floor and middle third, C1 was the most frequent and at the apical level it was C4 for both parts (37 and 47). Conclusions: The prevalence of Cshaped canals is not high. Bilateral appearance is more common than unilateral. Fan's classification is a complement to Melton's, since it will help us understand in more detail the morphological changes of this configuration along the root. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PREVENTION of obesity , *BODY mass index , *HEALTH policy , *LOGISTIC regression analysis , *NUTRITION surveys - Abstract
Objective. Describe the prevalence of obesity in adults from the Continuous National Health and Nutrition Survey 2020-2023 (Ensanut 2020-2023), its main sociodemographic characteristics, its association with chronic diseases, risk factors and the consumption of industrialized energetic beverages (IEB), as well as trends in the last 23 years, to contribute to the generation of evidence for the design of public health policies. Materials and methods. Information from 32 889 participants was analyzed to characterize the Mexican adult population by body mass index (BMI) groups and stratified by sociodemographic variables. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the associations of these groups with the variables of interest. The trend of BMI groups in the last six national surveys (2000-2023) was explored. Results. The prevalence of obesity in adults was 37.1% (41.0% women, 33.0% men). The percentage of energy coming from EIB was twice as high in men as in women (6.8 vs. 3.3%). Men in the highest quartile of percentage of energy coming from EIB were 2.29 times more likely to have obesity (p<0.05). There was a continuous and significant increase in the prevalence of obesity in the period 2000-2012, but between 2016-2023 no significant differences were observed (p>0.05). Conclusions. The national prevalence of obesity in adults showed an increase of 41.7% in the period 2000-2016. Starting in 2016, there was a stabilization of the trend. High EIB consumption increases the possibility of obesity. Interventions with a comprehensive and multisystemic vision are required that allow the prevention and control of obesity. POISSON regression , *HUMAN skin color , *LEISURE , *MARITAL status , *NON-communicable diseases - Abstract
Introduction: physical activity is one of the modifiable risk factors for chronic noncommunicable diseases, whose prevalence is still low, and there are few data in the literature about the level of physical activity considering different domains (total activity, occupational activity, commuting, home activity and leisure time). Objective: to review the prevalence of physical activity in different domains and analyze the association between these domains and sociodemographic, economic and behavioral factors. Materials and Methods: Population-based cross-sectional study with data on physical activity in different domains (total, occupational, transport, household, and leisure time), sociodemographic data, and behavioral data. Sampling weights were assigned to gender, age, and education variables, and the association between the different domains and related factors was tested using Poisson regression. Results: 931 subjects were evaluated. Female sex was associated with total physical activity, commuting, and home; age was associated with total physical activity, occupation, and commuting. Schooling, nonwhite skin color, and smoking were each associated with leisure, domestic, and recreational domains. Socioeconomic level was associated with the commuting, household, and leisure domains. Overall physical activity, commuting, household, and leisure were associated with marital status. Conclusion: Physical activity levels differed across domains and associated factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OVERWEIGHT children , *CHILDHOOD obesity , *LEAST squares , *DEVELOPMENTAL psychology , *TREND analysis - Abstract
Introduction: overweight and obesity in children are serious public health problems in Mexico. Objective: to analyze the behavior of the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children from 5 to 11 years of age and to present projections on the prevalence for the period 2022-2026. Methodology: ecological and retrospective study whose units of analysis were groups of children of Mexico with overweight and obesity in the period 1999-2021, according to information collected from six National Health and Nutrition Surveys. For the projections the classical method of least squares was used, for a trend analysis of both conditions for the period 2022-2026. Results: overweight in girls and obesity in boys shows a high prevalence in the period 1999-2021, even though the trend analysis for the period 2022-2026 shows a slight decrease in overweight for the group of boys and a slight increase in overweight for girls, as well in obesity for both groups. Conclusions: due to the high prevalence of overweight and obesity in children from 5 to 11 years of age in Mexico, an interdisciplinary approach is required to identify which dimensions (biochemical, psychological, interpersonal and social) participate in the problem, considering three environments contributing for psychological and social development of children, the ecological-social, the family and the school.

Introduction and aims: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most frequent functional gastrointestinal disorders. Prevalence worldwide is estimated at 11%. There is little information on the prevalence of the other functional bowel disorders (FBDs). Our aim was to establish the prevalence of IBS and other FBDs according to the Rome IV criteria, in Uruguay. Materials and methods: An observational, population-based prevalence study was conducted. Data were collected through an online questionnaire, utilizing the Rome IV criteria. Results: Of the 1,052 participants (79% women, mean patient age 44 years), 47.2% met the Rome IV diagnostic criteria for at least one of the FBDs analyzed. Functional constipation (FC) was the most frequent, at 18.7% (16.4-21.1), followed by IBS at 17.1% (14.9-19.4) and functional diarrhea (FD) at 15.4% (13.3-17.6). IBS with constipation (IBS-C) was the most frequent IBS subtype (35%) and the IBS with diarrhea (IBS-D) subtype predominated in men. All FBDs were more prevalent in women and youths. Of the survey participants with a FBD, 59% stated that they perceived no worsening of their symptoms related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions: Ours is the first prevalence study on FBDs conducted on the Uruguayan general population. Half of the participants surveyed presented with a FBD analyzed in the study. FC was the most frequent, followed by IBS and FD. The prevalence rate of IBS was the highest, based on the Rome IV diagnostic criteria, and constipation was the most frequent subtype.

Introduction: The factors and patterns associated with antibiotic consumption in infants are unclear. Our aim was to assess the cumulative incidence of antibiotic consumption from birth to 16 months and identify factors associated with antibiotic consumption among infants aged 4–16 months. Material and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 2016 in a sample of 18 882 women from Galicia, Spain, who had given birth to a live child between September 1, 2015 and August 31, 2016. We calculated the cumulative incidence of antibiotic consumption based on maternal reports regarding the infant’s consumption from birth to 14 months obtained through interviews; we did not estimate consumption at ages 15 and 16 months due to the small sample size. To assess which factors were associated with antibiotic consumption, we carried out a nested case-control study matching cases and controls for birth month on a 1:1 ratio. Results: The cumulative incidence of antibiotic consumption among infants aged 0–14 months increased from 7.5% to 66.0%. The case-control study included data for 1852 cases and 1852 controls. Daycare attendance (OR: 3.8 [95% CI: 3.2–4.6]), having older siblings (OR: 1.8 [95% CI: 1.6–2.1]), health care visits to private clinics (OR: 1.6 [95% CI: 1.4–2.0]), and passive smoking (OR: 1.3 [95% CI: 1.1–1.6]) were associated with an increased probability of antibiotic consumption. Maternal age between 30–39 years or 40 years and over at the time of birth was associated with a decreased probability of antibiotic consumption (OR: 0.8 [95% CI, 0.7–1.0] and OR: 0.6 [95% CI: 0.5–0.8], respectively). Conclusions: Some of the factors associated with antibiotic consumption in infants are modifiable and should be considered in the development of public health measures aimed at reducing antibiotic consumption.

- Abstract
Background: Rare diseases (RD) are those that have a low prevalence in the population; ≈80% have a genetic origin, and to diagnose them it takes from 5 to 10 years, and they require evaluations from ≈10 specialists. There is no international consensus on the definition and number of RDs, which affects the availability of resources for their diagnosis, treatment, and research. Objective: To determine the prevalence of RDs in the Medical Genetics Service of a regional general hospital belonging to the Mexican Institute for Social Security (IMSS), in Puebla, Mexico. Material and methods: The patients’ records who were evaluated by the above-mentioned service from January 2019 to June 2022 were reviewed. Those patients with a diagnosis of a RD were identified, and the prevalence was obtained by using the formula: total number of cases of the disease/number of people in the population at that moment in time. Results: A total of 798 medical records were reviewed and a prevalence of RDs of 27% was obtained. Those diseases with a prevalence of 1 case per 2000 inhabitants were considered, being 118 different RD. Considering only the 20 rare diseases registered in Mexico in 2022, 11 of these were detected, distributed in 35 patients, with an estimated prevalence of 4.3%. Conclusion: The prevalence of RDs differs according to the criteria implemented. In Mexico, several diseases that fall within the definition of a RD based on their prevalence were not considered as such until 2022, so the recent recognition of rare diseases included by the World Health Organization will benefit affected patients. Older people with rheumatic diseases tend to have a greater number of associated comorbidities, which will require the use of more drugs, increasing the risk of hospitalizations, complications, and drug interactions. In Mexico, there has been an estimated prevalence of polypharmacy of up to 55%, however there are scarce reports on the topic in our elderly population with rheumatic diseases. We aimed to determine the prevalence of polypharmacy and the association of drug interactions in patients treated for rheumatic disease. A retrospective observational study was conducted on patients undergoing treatment for rheumatic diseases who were treated in geriatrics and rheumatology clinics from January to December 2021. The presence of polypharmacy and drug interactions was evaluated using the BOT Plus Pharmacological Surveillance System. The prevalence of polypharmacy and the association of drug interactions were estimated. We evaluated 320 patients, with a mean age of 67.05 ± 5.8 years, predominantly female (85%). The prevalence of polypharmacy was 68.1% (n = 218), of which 214 (98.1%) patients had related drug interactions; 27.1% were severe and 53.2% as moderate interactions. Factors related with increased risk of drug interactions were being exposed to hypertension increased the risk of drug interactions (POR 1.75, 95% CI 1.44–2.14; P < 0.001), having osteoarthritis (POR 1.21, 95% CI 1.04–1.42; P = 0.032) and thyroid disease (POR 1.45, 95% CI 1.28–1.65; P = 0.001). The most prevalent serious interactions were leflunomide–methotrexate in 27 (46.5%) patients and buprenorphine–tramadol in 8 (13.7%). A high prevalence of polypharmacy and drug interactions was observed in elderly patients with rheumatic diseases. The main associated factors were comorbidities, particularly high blood pressure, osteoarthritis and thyroid diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fabella is a bony anatomical variable, which in humans is located posterior to the lateral condyle of the femur, in the tendinous portion of the lateral head of the gastrocnemius muscle. Its prevalence rate has been reported in different populations, ranging from 3% to 86%. This study aimed to create an index that classifies the fabella according to its dimensions, determine the prevalence of the fabella in the Colombian population, and identify possible differences according to the fabella index (FI), sex, age, laterality, and degree of fabellar degeneration. A retrospective study used 93 lateral knee radiographs belonging to Colombian individuals. A fabella index was established to classify fabellae into longifabellar, medifabellar, and equifabellar, and radiological classification was used to identify the degree of fabellar degeneration (DFD). The prevalence of fabella was 36.30 %, and this variant was associated with the individual’s sex, with male subjects having 2.66 times the probability of presenting fabella. A higher prevalence of medifabellar fabellae (57.60 %) was observed, followed by longifabellar (24.20 %) and equifabellar (18.20 %). There was a positive and moderate correlation between the DFD and age. We consider that larger fabellae can cause entrapment of the common fibular nerve, compression of the popliteal artery, and tear of the medial meniscus, so the FI becomes relevant in clinical practice, providing information on the type of fabella and its associated pathological manifestations. This study introduces a novel fabella index and investigates the frequency of fabella in the Colombian population. The findings of this study will serve as a reference for future research and contribute to the field of knee orthopedics and surgery in this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency of pharmacodermias in the Hospital Ángeles Metropolitano, Mexico City, as well as to examine the clinical characteristics and etiological agents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study was carried out from March 2022 to June 2023. Patients hospitalized at the Hospital Ángeles Metropolitano, Mexico City, over 18 years of age, with a diagnosis of mucocutaneous adverse drug reactions were included. RESULTS: Of the 16,651 hospitalized patients in the period of study, 104 were selected for diagnosis of mucocutaneous adverse drug reaction. The prevalence was of 6.24/1000 hospitalized patients, with a predominance of female sex (62.5%). The most frequent pharmacodermia was maculopapular exanthema, followed by urticaria with or without angioedema. Serious adverse drug reactions, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, accounted for 1%. The most related drugs were antibiotics, followed by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study agree with those reported in the national and international literature; however, epidemiological studies on pharmacodermias in Mexico should be continued in order to establish a more realistic national incidence.
