1. Radiopurity screening of materials for rare event searches by neutron activation at the TRIGA reactor of Pavia

Abstract: In the framework of physics experiments searching for rare events, the selection of extremely radiopure materials is a challenging task, as the signal of interest is often hidden by instrumental background. Neutron activation is a powerful technique to measure trace contaminants with high sensitivity but, to be properly applied, it requires a good characterization of neutron irradiation and $\gamma$-spectroscopy facilities. This paper presents the state-of-the-art workflow adopted by the Radioactivity Laboratory of the University of Milano-Bicocca for radiopurity screening of materials by neutron activation performed at the TRIGA reactor in Pavia. The ultimate sensitivity of the described workflow, in the absence of interfering activation products and without the application of radiochemical and/or active background rejection techniques, is $<10^{-14}$ g/g for $^{40}$K, $<10^{-12}$ g/g for $^{238}$U and of the order of $10^{-12}$ g/g for $^{232}$Th contaminations. Further details are here provided to address systematic uncertainties related to neutron irradiation that may bias results. To this aim, a dedicated neutron activation campaign was performed and the data were analyzed exploiting a Monte Carlo simulation model of the reactor and applying an unfolding technique to obtain a comprehensive characterization of the neutron flux in typical irradiation configurations. The results of this work provide a valuable benchmark for the application of neutron activation in future radiopurity screening campaigns.

Abstract: We present the model we developed to reconstruct the CUORE radioactive background based on the analysis of an experimental exposure of 1038.4 kg yr. The data reconstruction relies on a simultaneous Bayesian fit applied to energy spectra over a broad energy range. The high granularity of the CUORE detector, together with the large exposure and extended stable operations, allow for an in-depth exploration of both spatial and time dependence of backgrounds. We achieve high sensitivity to both bulk and surface activities of the materials of the setup, detecting levels as low as 10 nBq kg-1 and 0.1 nBq cm-2, respectively. We compare the contamination levels we extract from the background model with prior radio-assay data, which informs future background risk mitigation strategies. The results of this background model play a crucial role in constructing the background budget for the CUPID experiment as it will exploit the same CUORE infrastructure.

Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a detector array comprised by 988 5$\;$cm$\times$5$\;$cm$\times$5$\;$cm TeO$_2$ crystals held below 20 mK, primarily searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay in $^{130}$Te. Unprecedented in size amongst cryogenic calorimetric experiments, CUORE provides a promising setting for the study of exotic through-going particles. Using the first tonne-year of CUORE's exposure, we perform a search for hypothesized fractionally charged particles (FCPs), which are well-motivated by various Standard Model extensions and would have suppressed interactions with matter. No excess of FCP candidate tracks is observed over background, setting leading limits on the underground FCP flux with charges between $e/24-e/5$ at 90\% confidence level. Using the low background environment and segmented geometry of CUORE, we establish the sensitivity of tonne-scale sub-Kelvin detectors to diverse signatures of new physics., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: Several neutrino detectors, KamLAND, Daya Bay, Double Chooz, RENO, and the forthcoming large-scale JUNO, rely on liquid scintillator to detect reactor antineutrino interactions. In this context, inverse beta decay represents the golden channel for antineutrino detection, providing a pair of correlated events, thus a strong experimental signature to distinguish the signal from a variety of backgrounds. However, given the low cross-section of antineutrino interactions, the development of a powerful event selection algorithm becomes imperative to achieve effective discrimination between signal and backgrounds. In this study, we introduce a machine learning (ML) model to achieve this goal: a fully connected neural network as a powerful signal-background discriminator for a large liquid scintillator detector. We demonstrate, using the JUNO detector as an example, that, despite the already high efficiency of a cut-based approach, the presented ML model can further improve the overall event selection efficiency. Moreover, it allows for the retention of signal events at the detector edges that would otherwise be rejected because of the overwhelming amount of background events in that region. We also present the first interpretable analysis of the ML approach for event selection in reactor neutrino experiments. Abstract: The optical and radiochemical purification of the scintillating liquid, which will fill the central detector of the JUNO experiment, plays a crucial role in achieving its scientific goals. Given its gigantic mass and dimensions and an unprecedented target value of about 3% @ 1 MeV in energy resolution, JUNO has set severe requirements on the parameters of its scintillator, such as attenuation length (Lat>20 m at 430 nm), transparency, light yield, and content of radioactive contaminants (238U,232Th<10-15 g/g). To accomplish these needs, the scintillator will be processed using several purification methods, including distillation in partial vacuum and gas stripping, which are performed in two large scale plants installed at the JUNO site. In this paper, layout, operating principles, and technical aspects which have driven the design and construction of the distil- lation and gas stripping plants are reviewed. The distillation is effective in enhancing the optical properties and removing heavy radio-impurities (238U,232Th, 40K), while the stripping process exploits pure water steam and high-purity nitrogen to extract gaseous contaminants (222Rn, 39Ar, 85Kr, O2) from the scintillator. The plant operating parameters have been tuned during the recent com- missioning phase at the JUNO site and several QA/QC measurements and tests have been performed to evaluate the performances of the plants. Abstract: In the field of rare event physics, it is common to have huge masses of organic liquid scintillator as detection medium. In particular, they are widely used to study neutrino properties or astrophysical neutrinos. Thanks to its safety properties (such as low toxicity and high flash point) and easy scalability, linear alkyl benzene is the most common solvent used to produce liquid scintillators for large mass experiments. The knowledge of the refractive index is a pivotal point to understand the detector response, as this quantity (and its wavelength dependence) affects the Cherenkov radiation and photon propagation in the medium. In this paper, we report the measurement of the refractive index of the JUNO liquid scintillator between 260-1064 nm performed with two different methods (an ellipsometer and a refractometer), with a sub percent level precision. In addition, we used an interferometer to measure the group velocity in the JUNO liquid scintillator and verify the expected value derived from the refractive index measurements., Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: We explore the bound neutrons decay into invisible particles (e.g., $n\rightarrow 3 \nu$ or $nn \rightarrow 2 \nu$) in the JUNO liquid scintillator detector. The invisible decay includes two decay modes: $ n \rightarrow { inv} $ and $ nn \rightarrow { inv} $. The invisible decays of $s$-shell neutrons in $^{12}{\rm C}$ will leave a highly excited residual nucleus. Subsequently, some de-excitation modes of the excited residual nuclei can produce a time- and space-correlated triple coincidence signal in the JUNO detector. Based on a full Monte Carlo simulation informed with the latest available data, we estimate all backgrounds, including inverse beta decay events of the reactor antineutrino $\bar{\nu}_e$, natural radioactivity, cosmogenic isotopes and neutral current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. Pulse shape discrimination and multivariate analysis techniques are employed to further suppress backgrounds. With two years of exposure, JUNO is expected to give an order of magnitude improvement compared to the current best limits. After 10 years of data taking, the JUNO expected sensitivities at a 90% confidence level are $\tau/B( n \rightarrow { inv} ) > 5.0 \times 10^{31} \, {\rm yr}$ and $\tau/B( nn \rightarrow { inv} ) > 1.4 \times 10^{32} \, {\rm yr}$., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: The current experiments searching for neutrinoless double-$\beta$ ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay also collect large statistics of Standard Model allowed two-neutrino double-$\beta$ ($2\nu\beta\beta$) decay events. These can be used to search for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics via $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay spectral distortions. $^{100}$Mo has a natural advantage due to its relatively short half-life, allowing higher $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay statistics at equal exposures compared to the other isotopes. We demonstrate the potential of the dual read-out bolometric technique exploiting a $^{100}$Mo exposure of 1.47 kg $\times$ y, acquired in the CUPID-Mo experiment at the Modane underground laboratory (France). We set limits on $0\nu\beta\beta$ decays with the emission of one or more Majorons, on $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay with Lorentz violation, and $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay with a sterile neutrino emission. In this analysis, we investigate the systematic uncertainty induced by modeling the $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay spectral shape parameterized through an improved model, an effect never considered before. This work motivates searches for BSM processes in the upcoming CUPID experiment, which will collect the largest amount of $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay events among the next-generation experiments.

Abstract: The matter-antimatter asymmetry underlines the incompleteness of the current understanding of particle physics. Neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu \beta\beta$) decay may help explain this asymmetry, while unveiling the Majorana nature of the neutrino. The CUORE experiment searches for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay of $^{130}$Te using a tonne-scale cryogenic calorimeter operated at milli-kelvin temperatures. We report no evidence for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay and place a lower limit on the half-life of T$_{1/2}$ $>$ 3.8 $\times$ 10$^{25}$ years (90% C.I.) with over 2 tonne$\cdot$year TeO$_2$ exposure. The tools and techniques developed for this result and the 5 year stable operation of nearly 1000 detectors demonstrate the infrastructure for a next-generation experiment capable of searching for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay across multiple isotopes.

Abstract: Nuclear reactors are a source of electron antineutrinos due to the presence of unstable fission products that undergo $\beta^-$ decay. They will be exploited by the JUNO experiment to determine the neutrino mass ordering and to get very precise measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters. This requires the reactor antineutrino spectrum to be characterized as precisely as possible both through high resolution measurements, as foreseen by the TAO experiment, and detailed simulation models. In this paper we present a benchmark analysis utilizing Serpent Monte Carlo simulations in comparison with real pressurized water reactor spent fuel data. Our objective is to study the accuracy of fission fraction predictions as a function of different reactor simulation approximations. Then, utilizing the BetaShape software, we construct fissile antineutrino spectra using the summation method, thereby assessing the influence of simulation uncertainties on reactor antineutrino spectrum.

Abstract: Given a permutation group $G$, the derangement graph of $G$ is the Cayley graph with connection set the derangements of $G$. The group $G$ is said to be innately transitive if $G$ has a transitive minimal normal subgroup. Clearly, every primitive group is innately transitive. We show that, besides an infinite family of explicit exceptions, there exists a function $f:\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{N}$ such that, if $G$ is innately transitive of degree $n$ and the derangement graph of $G$ has no clique of size $k$, then $n\le f(k)$. Motivation for this work arises from investigations on Erd\H{o}s-Ko-Rado type theorems for permutation groups.

Abstract: The current experiments searching for neutrinoless double-β (0νββ) decay also collect large statistics of Standard Model allowed two-neutrino double-β (2νββ) decay events. These can be used to search for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics via 2νββ decay spectral distortions. 100Mo has a natural advantage due to its relatively short half-life, allowing higher 2νββ decay statistics at equal exposures compared to the other isotopes. We demonstrate the potential of the dual read-out bolometric technique exploiting a 100Mo exposure of 1.47 kg × years, acquired in the CUPID-Mo experiment at the Modane underground laboratory (France). We set limits on 0νββ decays with the emission of one or more Majorons, on 2νββ decay with Lorentz violation, and 2νββ decay with a sterile neutrino emission. In this analysis, we investigate the systematic uncertainty induced by modeling the 2νββ decay spectral shape parameterized through an improved model, an effect never considered before. This work motivates searches for BSM processes in the upcoming CUPID experiment, which will collect the largest amount of 2νββ decay events among the next-generation experiments.

Abstract: Abstract Stride velocity 95th centile (SV95C) is a wearable-derived endpoint representing the 5% fastest strides taken during everyday living. In July 2023, SV95C received European Medicines Agency (EMA) qualification for use as a primary endpoint in trials of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) aged ≥ 4 years—becoming the first digital endpoint to receive such qualification. We present the data supporting this qualification, providing insights into the evidentiary basis of qualification as a digital clinical outcome assessment. Clinical trials, natural history studies, and patient surveys (ages 5 − 14 years) showed that SV95C is accurate, valid, reliable, sensitive, and clinically meaningful. SV95C significantly correlated with traditional DMD assessments, increased rapidly after steroid initiation (0.090 m/s 3 months post-treatment), and declined steadily in patients on stable steroid regimens. Compared with traditional assessments, SV95C demonstrated earlier sensitivity to disease progression (3 vs 9 months) and greater sensitivity at 12 months. Distribution- and anchor-based approaches revealed a change of − 0.10 to − 0.20 m/s as clinically meaningful. The EMA qualification of SV95C illustrates the willingness of regulators to accept novel digital endpoints for drug approval, setting an important precedent for the evidentiary basis of regulatory digital endpoint qualification that could transform clinical development in disorders affecting movement.

Abstract: Abstract Fungal infections pose a great threat to public health and there are only four main types of antifungal drugs, which are often limited with toxicity, drug-drug interactions and antibiotic resistance. Streptomyces is an important source of antibiotics, represented by the clinical drug amphotericin B. Here we report the discovery of alligamycin A (1) as an antifungal compound from the rapamycin-producer Streptomyces iranensis through genome-mining, genetics and natural product chemistry approaches. Alligamycin A harbors a unique chemical scaffold with 13 chiral centers, featuring a β-lactone moiety, a [6,6]-spiroketal ring, and an unreported 7-oxo-octylmalonyl-CoA extender unit incorporated by a potential crotonyl-CoA carboxylase/reductase. It is biosynthesized by a type I polyketide synthase which is confirmed through CRISPR-based gene editing. Alligamycin A displayed potent antifungal effects against numerous clinically relevant filamentous fungi, including resistant Aspergillus and Talaromyces species. β-Lactone ring is essential for the antifungal activity since alligamycin B (2) with disruption in the ring abolished the antifungal effect. Proteomics analysis revealed alligamycin A potentially disrupts the integrity of fungal cell walls and induces the expression of stress-response proteins in Aspergillus niger. Discovery of the potent antifungal candidate alligamycin A expands the limited antifungal chemical space.

Abstract: Abstract Background Facioscapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD) is a myopathy characterized by the loss of repressive epigenetic features affecting the D4Z4 locus (4q35). The assessment of DNA methylation at two regions (DUX4-PAS and DR1) of D4Z4 locus proved to be an effective method to detect epigenetic signatures compatible with FSHD. The present study aims at validating the employment of this method into clinical practice and improving the protocol by refining the classification thresholds of 4qA/4qA patients. To this purpose, 218 subjects with clinical suspicion of FSHD collected in 2022–2023 were analyzed. Each participant underwent in parallel the traditional FSHD molecular testing (D4Z4 sizing) and the proposed methylation assay. The results provided by both analyses were compared to evaluate the concordance and calculate the performance metrics of the methylation test. Results Among the 218 subjects, the 4q variant type distribution was 54% 4qA/4qA, 43% 4qA/4qB and 3% 4qB/4qB. The methylation analysis was performed only on carriers of at least one 4qA allele. After refining the classification threshold, the test reached the following performance metrics: sensitivity = 0.90, specificity = 1.00 and accuracy = 0.93. These results confirmed the effectiveness of the methylation assay in identifying patients with genetic signature compatible with FSHD1 and FSHD2 based on their DUX4-PAS and DR1 profile, respectively. The methylation data were also evaluated with respect to the clinical information. Conclusions The study confirmed the ability of the method to accurately identify methylation profiles compatible with FSHD genetic signatures considering the 4q genotype. Moreover, the test allows the detection of hypomethylated profiles in asymptomatic patients, suggesting its potential application in identifying preclinical conditions in patients with positive family history and FSHD genetic signatures. Furthermore, the present work emphasizes the importance of interpreting methylation profiles considering the patients’ clinical data.

Abstract: Abstract Objective The objective of this study is to report the results of the genetic analysis in a large and well‐characterized population with pediatric‐onset epilepsies and to identify those who could benefit from precision medicine treatments. Methods In this retrospective observational study, we consecutively recruited patients with pediatric‐onset epilepsy observed at a tertiary neurological center over a time span of 7 years, collecting clinical and laboratory findings. Following in‐depth diagnostic process to exclude possible structural and metabolic causes of the disease, patients with a suspected genetically determined etiology underwent next‐generation sequencing (NGS) screening with panels for the analysis of target genes causative of epilepsy. Results We detected likely pathogenic or pathogenic variants (classes IV and V) in 24% of the 562 patients who underwent genetic investigations. By the evaluation of patients' data, we observed that some features (onset of epilepsy before one year old, presence of neurological deficits, psychomotor delay/cognitive disability, and malformative aspects at brain MRI) were significantly associated with class IV or V variants. Moreover, statistical analysis showed that the diagnostic yield resulted higher for patients affected by Progressive Myoclonic Epilepsy (PME) and with early onset developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEE), compared with focal epilepsies, genetic generalized epilepsies, DEE with onset at/after 1 y.o., and unclassified epileptic syndromes. According to the results of the genetic screening, up to 33% of patients carrying class IV or V variants resulted potentially eligible for precision medicine treatments. Significance The large‐scale application of NGS multigene panels of analysis is a useful tool for the molecular diagnosis of patients with pediatric‐onset epilepsies, allowing the identification of those who could benefit from a personalized therapeutic approach. Plain Language Summary The analysis of patients with pediatric‐onset epilepsy using advanced technologies for the screening of all the implicated genes allows the identification of the cause of diseases in an ever‐increasing number of cases. Understanding the pathogenic mechanisms could, in some cases, guide the selection and optimization of appropriate treatment approaches for patients.

Abstract: The core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is considered one of the most energetic astrophysical events in the universe. The early and prompt detection of neutrinos before (pre-SN) and during the supernova (SN) burst presents a unique opportunity for multi-messenger observations of CCSN events. In this study, we describe the monitoring concept and present the sensitivity of the system to pre-SN and SN neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector currently under construction in South China. The real-time monitoring system is designed to ensure both prompt alert speed and comprehensive coverage of progenitor stars. It incorporates prompt monitors on the electronic board as well as online monitors at the data acquisition stage. Assuming a false alert rate of 1 per year, this monitoring system exhibits sensitivity to pre-SN neutrinos up to a distance of approximately 1.6 (0.9) kiloparsecs and SN neutrinos up to about 370 (360) kiloparsecs for a progenitor mass of 30 solar masses, considering both normal and inverted mass ordering scenarios. The pointing ability of the CCSN is evaluated by analyzing the accumulated event anisotropy of inverse beta decay interactions from pre-SN or SN neutrinos. Abstract: Neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) is a yet unobserved nuclear process which would demonstrate Lepton Number violation, a clear evidence of beyond Standard Model physics. The process two neutrino double beta decay ($2\nu\beta\beta)$ is allowed by the Standard Model and has been measured in numerous experiments. In this letter, we report a measurement of $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life of $^{100}$Mo to the ground state of $^{100}$Ru of $(7.07~\pm~0.02~\text{(stat.)}~\pm~0.11~\text{(syst.)})~\times~10^{18}$~yr by the CUPID-Mo experiment. With a relative precision of $\pm~1.6$ \% this is the most precise measurement to date of a $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay rate in $^{100}$Mo. In addition, we constrain higher-order corrections to the spectral shape which provides complementary nuclear structure information. We report a novel measurement of the shape factor $\xi_{3,1}=0.45~\pm 0.03~\text{(stat.)} \ \pm 0.05 \ \text{(syst.)}$, which is compared to theoretical predictions for different nuclear models. Abstract: We report on the results obtained with the global CUPID-0 background model, which combines the data collected in the two measurement campaigns for a total exposure of 16.6 kg$\times$yr. We identify with improved precision the background sources in the region of interest for neutrinoless double $\beta$-decay, making more solid the foundations for the background budget of the next-generation CUPID experiment. Relying on the excellent data reconstruction, we measure the two-neutrino double $\beta$-decay half-life of $^{82}$Se with unprecedented accuracy: $T_{1/2}^{2\nu} = [8.69 \pm 0.05 \textrm{(stat.)}~^{+0.09}_{-0.06} \textrm{(syst.)}] \times 10^{19}~\textrm{yr}$.

Abstract: We discuss JUNO sensitivity to the annihilation of MeV dark matter in the galactic halo via detecting inverse beta decay reactions of electron anti-neutrinos resulting from the annihilation. We study possible backgrounds to the signature, including the reactor neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, charged- and neutral-current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos, backgrounds from muon-induced fast neutrons and cosmogenic isotopes. A fiducial volume cut, as well as the pulse shape discrimination and the muon veto are applied to suppress the above backgrounds. It is shown that JUNO sensitivity to the thermally averaged dark matter annihilation rate in 10 years of exposure would be significantly better than the present-day best limit set by Super-Kamiokande and would be comparable to that expected by Hyper-Kamiokande., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, matches the publised version

Abstract: CUPID-Mo, located in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France), was a demonstrator for the next generation $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay experiment, CUPID. It consisted of an array of 20 enriched Li$_{2}$$ ^{100}$MoO$_4$ bolometers and 20 Ge light detectors and has demonstrated that the technology of scintillating bolometers with particle identification capabilities is mature. Furthermore, CUPID-Mo can inform and validate the background prediction for CUPID. In this paper, we present a detailed model of the CUPID-Mo backgrounds. This model is able to describe well the features of the experimental data and enables studies of the $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay and other processes with high precision. We also measure the radio-purity of the Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals which are found to be sufficient for the CUPID goals. Finally, we also obtain a background index in the region of interest of 3.7$^{+0.9}_{-0.8}$(stat)$^{+1.5}_{-0.7}$(syst)$\times10^{-3}$counts/$\Delta$E$_{FWHM}$/mol$_{iso}$/yr, the lowest in a bolometric $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay experiment.

Abstract: CUPID is a next-generation bolometric experiment aiming at searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay with ~250 kg of isotopic mass of $^{100}$Mo. It will operate at $\sim$10 mK in a cryostat currently hosting a similar-scale bolometric array for the CUORE experiment at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (Italy). CUPID will be based on large-volume scintillating bolometers consisting of $^{100}$Mo-enriched Li$_2$MoO$_4$ crystals, facing thin Ge-wafer-based bolometric light detectors. In the CUPID design, the detector structure is novel and needs to be validated. In particular, the CUORE cryostat presents a high level of mechanical vibrations due to the use of pulse tubes and the effect of vibrations on the detector performance must be investigated. In this paper we report the first test of the CUPID-design bolometric light detectors with NTD-Ge sensors in a dilution refrigerator equipped with a pulse tube in an above-ground lab. Light detectors are characterized in terms of sensitivity, energy resolution, pulse time constants, and noise power spectrum. Despite the challenging noisy environment due to pulse-tube-induced vibrations, we demonstrate that all the four tested light detectors comply with the CUPID goal in terms of intrinsic energy resolution of 100 eV RMS baseline noise. Indeed, we have measured 70--90 eV RMS for the four devices, which show an excellent reproducibility. We have also obtained outstanding energy resolutions at the 356 keV line from a $^{133}$Ba source with one light detector achieving 0.71(5) keV FWHM, which is -- to our knowledge -- the best ever obtained when compared to $\gamma$ detectors of any technology in this energy range., Comment: Prepared for submission to JINST; 16 pages, 7 figures, and 1 table

Abstract: An array of twelve 0.28 kg lithium molybdate (LMO) low-temperature bolometers equipped with 16 bolometric Ge light detectors, aiming at optimization of detector structure for CROSS and CUPID double-beta decay experiments, was constructed and tested in a low-background pulse-tube-based cryostat at the Canfranc underground laboratory in Spain. Performance of the scintillating bolometers was studied depending on the size of phonon NTD-Ge sensors glued to both LMO and Ge absorbers, shape of the Ge light detectors (circular vs. square, from two suppliers), in different light collection conditions (with and without reflector, with aluminum coated LMO crystal surface). Abstract: Abstract The current experiments searching for neutrinoless double- $$\beta $$ β ( $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β ) decay also collect large statistics of Standard Model allowed two-neutrino double- $$\beta $$ β ( $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β ) decay events. These can be used to search for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics via $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β decay spectral distortions. 100Mo has a natural advantage due to its relatively short half-life, allowing higher $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β decay statistics at equal exposures compared to the other isotopes. We demonstrate the potential of the dual read-out bolometric technique exploiting a 100Mo exposure of 1.47 kg $$\times $$ × years, acquired in the CUPID-Mo experiment at the Modane underground laboratory (France). We set limits on $$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0 ν β β decays with the emission of one or more Majorons, on $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β decay with Lorentz violation, and $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β decay with a sterile neutrino emission. In this analysis, we investigate the systematic uncertainty induced by modeling the $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β decay spectral shape parameterized through an improved model, an effect never considered before. This work motivates searches for BSM processes in the upcoming CUPID experiment, which will collect the largest amount of $$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2 ν β β decay events among the next-generation experiments.

Abstract: Abstract Objectives Neurogenic muscle hypertrophy (NMH) is a rare condition characterized by focal muscle hypertrophy caused by chronic partial nervous injury. Given its infrequency, underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Inspired by two clinical cases, we conducted a systematic review to gain insights into the different aspects of NMH. Methods We systematically searched online databases up until May 30, 2023, for reports of muscle hypertrophy attributed to acquired neurogenic factors. We conducted an exploratory analysis to identify commonly associated features. We also report two representative clinical cases. Results Our search identified 63 reports, describing 93 NMH cases, to which we added our two cases. NMH predominantly affects patients with compressive radiculopathy (68.4%), negligible muscular weakness (93.3%), and a chronic increase in muscle bulk. A striking finding in most neurophysiological studies (60.0%) is profuse spontaneous discharges, often hindering the analysis of voluntary traces. Some patients exhibited features consistent with more significant muscle damage, including higher creatine phosphokinase levels, muscle pain, and inflammatory muscle infiltration. These patients are sometimes referred to in literature as “focal myositis.” Treatment encompassed corticosteroid, Botulinum Toxin A, decompressive surgery, antiepileptic medications, and nerve blocks, demonstrating varying degrees of efficacy. Botulinum Toxin A yielded the most favorable response in terms of reducing spontaneous discharges. Interpretation This systematic review aims to provide a clear description and categorization of this uncommon presentation of an often‐overlooked neurological disorder. Though questions remain about the underlying mechanism, evidence suggests that aberrant fiber overstimulation along with increased workload that promotes focal damage may result in muscle hypertrophy. This may serve as a guide for therapeutic interventions.

Abstract: The main task of the Top Tracker detector of the neutrino reactor experiment Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is to reconstruct and extrapolate atmospheric muon tracks down to the central detector. This muon tracker will help to evaluate the contribution of the cosmogenic background to the signal. The Top Tracker is located above JUNO's water Cherenkov Detector and Central Detector, covering about 60% of the surface above them. The JUNO Top Tracker is constituted by the decommissioned OPERA experiment Target Tracker modules. The technology used consists in walls of two planes of plastic scintillator strips, one per transverse direction. Wavelength shifting fibres collect the light signal emitted by the scintillator strips and guide it to both ends where it is read by multianode photomultiplier tubes. Compared to the OPERA Target Tracker, the JUNO Top Tracker uses new electronics able to cope with the high rate produced by the high rock radioactivity compared to the one in Gran Sasso underground laboratory. Abstract: The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), the first multi-kton liquid scintillator detector, which is under construction in China, will have a unique potential to perform a real-time measurement of solar neutrinos well below the few MeV threshold typical for Water Cherenkov detectors. JUNO's large target mass and excellent energy resolution are prerequisites for reaching unprecedented levels of precision. In this paper, we provide estimation of the JUNO sensitivity to 7Be, pep, and CNO solar neutrinos that can be obtained via a spectral analysis above the 0.45 MeV threshold. This study is performed assuming different scenarios of the liquid scintillator radiopurity, ranging from the most opti mistic one corresponding to the radiopurity levels obtained by the Borexino experiment, up to the minimum requirements needed to perform the neutrino mass ordering determination with reactor antineutrinos - the main goal of JUNO. Our study shows that in most scenarios, JUNO will be able to improve the current best measurements on 7Be, pep, and CNO solar neutrino fluxes. We also perform a study on the JUNO capability to detect periodical time variations in the solar neutrino flux, such as the day-night modulation induced by neutrino flavor regeneration in Earth, and the modulations induced by temperature changes driven by helioseismic waves.

Abstract: The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a large neutrino detector currently under construction in China. Thanks to the tight requirements on its optical and radio-purity properties, it will be able to perform leading measurements detecting terrestrial and astrophysical neutrinos in a wide energy range from tens of keV to hundreds of MeV. A key requirement for the success of the experiment is an unprecedented 3% energy resolution, guaranteed by its large active mass (20 kton) and the use of more than 20,000 20-inch photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs) acquired by high-speed, high-resolution sampling electronics located very close to the PMTs. As the Front-End and Read-Out electronics is expected to continuously run underwater for 30 years, a reliable readout acquisition system capable of handling the timestamped data stream coming from the Large-PMTs and permitting to simultaneously monitor and operate remotely the inaccessible electronics had to be developed. In this contribution, the firmware and hardware implementation of the IPbus based readout protocol will be presented, together with the performances measured on final modules during the mass production of the electronics.

JUNO will perform leading measurements detecting neutrinos from different sources (reactor, terrestrial and astrophysical neutrinos) covering a wide energy range (from 200 keV to several GeV). This paper focuses on the design and development of a test protocol for the 20-inch PMT underwater readout electronics, performed in parallel to the mass production line. In a time period of about ten months, a total number of 6950 electronic boards were tested with an acceptance yield of 99.1%.

Abstract: Summary: Background: The advent of disease-modifying treatments (DMT) has changed natural history in 5q Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). The aim of this study was to report survival and functional aspects in all the Italian type I children born since 2016. All the Italian SMA referral centers provided data on survival and motor, respiratory, and nutritional status. To compare survival rate pre and post DMTs approval, we also included similar data from SMA I patients born between January 1st, 2010, and December 31st, 2015. A two-proportion z-test was conducted to compare the two cohorts. The significance level was set at p 16 h/day ventilation or tracheostomy with continuous invasive ventilation. 130 of the 199 survivors (65%) achieved independent sitting, and 175 (87.9%) did not require tube feeding. Interpretation: Our study provides a picture of the ‘new natural history’ of type I SMA, confirming the impact of the new therapies on the progression of type I with longer survival r and has better motor, respiratory and nutritional. 50. LINFOMA DE HODGKIN REFRATÁRIO RESPONSIVO AO TRATAMENTO COM NIVOLUMABE

Abstract: Introdução: O linfoma de Hodgkin (LH) é caracterizado pela presença histológica das células de Reed-Sternberg. Sua incidência corresponde a aproximadamente 10% dos linfomas e cerca de 0,6% dos cânceres. O quadro clínico inclui linfonodos aumentados e indolores na região cervical, tóraxsuperior, interior do mediastino, axilas, abdômen e região inguinal. Além disso, os denominados sintomas B podem estar associados como febre, sudorese noturna e emagrecimento. O diagnóstico de LH é realizado por biópsia excisional de linfonodo, sendo a PET/CT considerada padrão-ouro para o estadiamento. Os principais tratamentos para esses pacientes são a quimioterapia e a radioterapia. Outras opções terapêuticas incluem anticorpos monoclonais e o transplante de células tronco hematopoiéticas. Objetivo: Relatar um caso de LH refratário à quimioterapia, mas responsivo ao Nivolumabe. Relato de caso: Paciente de 23 anos, feminino, com quadro de linfonodomegalias em região cervical em 2020, com aumento gradativo em quantidade e tamanho. Ao exame físico, foi possível observar linfonomegalia com múltiplos gânglios móveis, indolores e de consistência fibro-elástica em cadeias ganglionares cervical inferior, supraclavicular e axilar (bulky). Em fevereiro/2021, imuno-histoquímica resultou Linfoma deHodgkin - Esclerose Nodular, CD30+/CD15+/MUM-1+. Em março/2021, relatou perda de 14 kg, sudorese noturna e febre esporádica à noite. Iniciou quimioterapia em abril/2022 e terminou os seis ciclos de ABVD em outubro/2022 sendo a doença refratária. Tentativas de resgate com um ciclo de DHAP (toxicidade renal), dois ciclos de GIV sem resposta satisfatória e então 20 sessões de radioterapia, finalizadas em março/2023 com resposta parcial. Em junho/2023 fez novo PET, que revelou doença em região cervical e axilar, portanto, LH triplo refratário. Iniciado tratamento com Nivolumabe em fevereiro/2024 com resposta clínica completa já no primeiro ciclo e metabólica ao PET após o sexto ciclo. Discussão: O esquema ABVD é o tratamento de primeira linha para o LH, mas cerca de 15% dos pacientes apresentam refratariedade. No caso relatado, a paciente não respondeu ao ABVD, levando a outros esquemas (DHAP, GIV), objetivando um transplante autólogo se responsivo à quimioterapia. Como não houve resposta, foi considerado o uso do anticorpo monoclonal Nivolumabe. O Nivolumabe é uma opção eficaz para pacientes com LH recidivado. Estudos sugerem que sua ativação prolongada ao sistema imunológico contribui para a remissão, mostrando que sua ligação às células T pode persistir por mais de dois meses após uma única dose. No caso da paciente, a resposta positiva ao Nivolumabe pode ser atribuída à essa persistência. Isso reforça estudos que indicam a eficácia do bloqueio de checkpoint anti-PD-1 como uma estratégia potencialmente curativa para pacientes com LH refratário, especialmente em casos com características genéticas que aumentam a expressão dos ligantes do PD-1. Conclusão: O LH apresenta um desafio terapêutico considerável nos casos refratários aos tratamentos convencionais. O caso relatado destaca a importância de alternativas terapêuticas, como o uso do anticorpo monoclonal citado. Mostrou que o inibidor de check point - anti-PD1, Nivolumabe, é uma ótima opção para esses casos refratários.
