Search

We have found that the 2+2 quadruple star system BU CMi is currently the most compact quadruple system known, with an extremely short outer period of only 121 days. The previous record holder was TIC 219006972 (Kostov et al. 2023), with a period of 168 days. The quadruple nature of BU CMi was established by Volkov et al. (2021), but they misidentified the outer period as 6.6 years. BU CMi contains two eclipsing binaries (EBs), each with a period near 3 days, and a substantial eccentricity of about 0.22. All four stars are within about 0.1 solar mass of 2.4 solar masses. Both binaries exhibit dynamically driven apsidal motion with fairly short apsidal periods of about 30 years, thanks to the short outer orbital period. The outer period of 121 days is found both from the dynamical perturbations, with this period imprinted on the eclipse timing variations (ETV) curve of each EB by the other binary, and by modeling the complex line profiles in a collection of spectra. We find that the three orbital planes are all mutually aligned to within 1 degree, but the overall system has an inclination angle near 83.5 degrees. We utilize a complex spectro-photodynamical analysis to compute and tabulate all the interesting stellar and orbital parameters of the system. Finally, we also find an unexpected dynamical perturbation on a timescale of several years whose origin we explore. This latter effect was misinterpreted by Volkov et al. We report the discovery with TESS of a remarkable quadruple star system with a 2+1+1 configuration. The two unique characteristics of this system are that (i) the inner eclipsing binary (stars Aa and Ab) eclipses the star in the outermost orbit (star C), and (ii) these outer 4th body eclipses last for $\sim$12 days, the longest of any such system known. The three orbital periods are $\sim$3.3 days, $\sim$51 days, and $\sim$2100 days. The extremely long duration of the outer eclipses is due to the fact that star B slows binary A down on the sky relative to star C. We combine TESS photometric data, ground-based photometric observations, eclipse timing points, radial velocity measurements, the composite spectral energy distribution, and stellar isochones in a spectro-photodynamical analysis to deduce all of the basic properties of the four stars (mass, radius, $T_{\rm eff}$, and age), as well as the orbital parameters for all three orbits. The four masses are $M_{\rm Aa} =0.382$M$_\odot$, $M_{\rm Ab} =0.300$M$_\odot$, $M_{\rm B} =0.540$M$_\odot$ and $M_{\rm C} =0.615$M$_\odot$, with a typical uncertainty of 0.015 M$_\odot$., Comment: Accepted for publication by The Astrophysical Journal, 10 August 2022

Rapidly rotating early-type main-sequence stars with transiting planets are interesting in many aspects. Unfortunately, several astrophysical effects in such systems are not well understood yet. Therefore, we performed a photometric mini-survey of three rapidly rotating stars with transiting planets, namely KELT-17b, KELT-19Ab, and KELT-21b, using the Characterising Exoplanets Satellite (CHEOPS), complemented with Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data, and spectroscopic data. We aimed at investigating the spin-orbit misalignment and its photometrical signs, therefore the high-quality light curves of the selected objects were tested for transit asymmetry, transit duration variations, and orbital precession. In addition, we performed transit time variation analyses, obtained new stellar parameters, and refined the system parameters. For KELT-17b and KELT-19Ab we obtained significantly smaller planet radius as found before. The gravity-darkening effect is very small compared to the precision of CHEOPS data. We can report only on a tentative detection of the stellar inclination of KELT-21, which is about 60 deg. In KELT-17b and KELT-19Ab we were able to exclude long-term transit duration variations causing orbital precession. The shorter transit duration of KELT-19Ab compared to the discovery paper is probably a consequence of a smaller planet radius. KELT-21b is promising from this viewpoint, but further precise observations are needed. There is a small group of peculiar early-type stars on the main sequence that show different rotation velocities from different spectral lines. This inconsistency might be due to the binary nature of these objects. We aim to verify this hypothesis by a more detailed spectroscopic and photometric investigation of one such object: HD 183986. We obtained 151 high and medium resolution spectra that covered an anticipated long orbital period. There is clear evidence of theorbital motion of the primary component. We uncovered a very faint and broad spectrum of the secondary component. The corresponding SB2 orbital parameters, and the component spectra, were obtained by Fourier disentangling using the KOREL code. The component spectra were further modeled by iSpec code to arrive at the atmospheric quantities and the projected rotational velocities. We have proven that this object is a binary star with the period $P$ = 1268.2(11) d, eccentricity $e$ = 0.5728(20), and mass ratio $q$ = 0.655. The primary component is a slowly rotating star ($v \sin i = 27$ km.s$^{-1}$) while the cooler and less massive secondary rotates much faster ($v \sin i \sim 120$ km.s$^{-1}$). Photometric observations obtained by the TESS satellite were also investigated to shed more light on this object. A multi-period photometric variability was detected in the TESS data ranging from hours (the $\delta$ Sct-type variability) to a few days (spots/rotational variability). Ariel, the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey, was adopted as the fourth medium-class mission in ESA's Cosmic Vision programme to be launched in 2029. During its 4-year mission, Ariel will study what exoplanets are made of, how they formed and how they evolve, by surveying a diverse sample of about 1000 extrasolar planets, simultaneously in visible and infrared wavelengths. It is the first mission dedicated to measuring the chemical composition and thermal structures of hundreds of transiting exoplanets, enabling planetary science far beyond the boundaries of the Solar System. The payload consists of an off-axis Cassegrain telescope (primary mirror 1100 mm x 730 mm ellipse) and two separate instruments (FGS and AIRS) covering simultaneously 0.5-7.8 micron spectral range. The satellite is best placed into an L2 orbit to maximise the thermal stability and the field of regard. The payload module is passively cooled via a series of V-Groove radiators; the detectors for the AIRS are the only items that require active cooling via an active Ne JT cooler. Only a few exoplanets are known to orbit around fast rotating stars. One of them is XO-6b, which orbits an F5V-type star. Shortly after the discovery, we started multicolor photometric and radial-velocity follow-up observations of XO-6b, using the telescopes of Astronomical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Our main scientific goals were to better characterize the planetary system and to search for transit timing variations. We refined several planetary and orbital parameters. Based on our measurements, the planet XO-6b seems to be about 10% larger, which is, however, only about $2\sigma$ difference, but its orbit inclination angle, with respect to the plane of the sky, seems to be significantly smaller, than it was determined originally by the discoverers. In this case we found about $9.5\sigma$ difference. Moreover, we observed periodic transit timing variations of XO-6b with a semi-amplitude of about 14 min and with a period of about 450 days. There are two plausible explanations of such transit timing variations: (1) a third object in the system XO-6 causing light-time effect, or (2) resonant perturbations between the transiting planet XO-6b and another unknown low-mass planet in this system. From the O-C diagram we derived that the assumed third object in the system should have a stellar mass, therefore significant variations are expected in the radial-velocity measurements of XO-6. Since this is not the case, and since all attempts to fit radial velocities and O-C data simultaneously failed to provide a consistent solution, more realistic is the second explanation., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The magnetic chemically peculiar (Ap/CP2) star 21 Com has been extensively studied in the past, albeit with widely differing and sometimes contradictory results, in particular concerning the occurrence of short term variability between about 5 to 90 minutes. We have performed a new investigation of 21 Com using MOST satellite and high-cadence ground-based photometry, time series spectroscopy, and evolutionary and pulsational modeling. Our analysis confirms that 21 Com is a classical CP2 star showing increased abundances of, in particular, Cr and Sr. From spectroscopic analysis, we have derived Teff = 8900(200) K, log g = 3.9(2), and vsini = 63(2) km/s. Our modeling efforts suggest that 21 Com is a main sequence (MS) star seen equator-on with a mass of 2.29(10) M(Sun) and a radius of R = 2.6(2) R(Sun). Our extensive photometric data confirm the existence of rotational light variability with a period of 2.05219(2) d. However, no significant frequencies with a semi-amplitude exceeding 0.2 mmag were found in the frequency range from 5 to 399 c/d. Our RV data also do not indicate short-term variability. We calculated pulsational models assuming different metallicities and ages, which do not predict the occurrence of unstable modes. The star 18 Com, often employed as comparison star for 21 Com in the past, has been identified as a periodic variable (P = 1.41645 d). While it is impossible to assess whether 21 Com has exhibited short-term variability in the past, the new observational data and several issues/inconsistencies identified in previous studies strongly suggest that 21 Com is neither a delta Scuti nor a roAp pulsator but a "well-behaved" CP2 star exhibiting its trademark rotational variability., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

Transit timing variations of Kepler-410Ab were already reported in a few papers. Their semi-amplitude is about 14.5 minutes. In our previous paper, we found that the transit timing variations could be caused by the presence of a stellar companion in this system. Our main motivation for this paper was to investigate variation in a radial-velocity curve generated by this additional star in the system. We performed spectroscopic observation of Kepler-410 using three telescopes in Slovakia and Czech Republic. Using the cross-correlation function, we measured the radial velocities of the star Kepler-410A. We did not observe any periodic variation in a radial-velocity curve. Therefore, we rejected our previous hypothesis about additional stellar companion in the Kepler-410 system. We ran different numerical simulations to study mean-motion resonances with Kepler-410Ab. Observed transit timing variations could be also explained by the presence of a small planet near to mean-motion resonance 2:3 with Kepler-410Ab. This resonance is stable on a long-time scale. In some delta Scuti stars, only one or two radial modes are excited (usually the fundamental mode and/or first overtone mode) and the observed peak-to-peak amplitudes exceed 0.3 mag (V). These stars are known as High Amplitude Delta Scuti (HADS) variables. We here present a detailed photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the HADS star TYC 3637-1152-1. We have derived a metallicity close to solar, a spectral type of F4V and an age of log t = 9.1. Employing archival time series data from different sources, two frequencies f0 =10.034 c/d and f1 =12.681 c/d and their harmonics and linear combinations were identified. The period ratio of f0/f1 = 0.791 puts this star into a peculiar position in the Petersen diagram, from which we conclude that TYC 3637-1152-1 is a unique object with peculiar pulsational properties that indicate a transitional state between HADS stars pulsating in the fundamental and first overtone modes and stars pulsating in higher overtones., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in New Astronomy

Magnetic chemically peculiar (mCP) stars exhibit complex atmospheres that allow the investigation of such diverse phenomena as atomic diffusion, magnetic fields, and stellar rotation. The advent of space-based photometry provides the opportunity for the first precise characterizations of the photometric variability properties of these stars. We carried out a search for new mCP stars in the Kepler field with the ultimate aim of investigating their photometric variability properties using Kepler data. As an aside, we describe criteria for selecting mCP star candidates based on light curve properties, and assess the accuracy of the spectral classifications provided by the MKCLASS code. As only very few known mCP stars are situated in the Kepler field, we had to depend largely on alternative (nonspectroscopic) means of identifying suitable candidates that rely mostly on light curve properties; in particular we relied on monoperiodic variability and light curve stability. Newly acquired and archival spectra were used to confirm most of our mCP star candidates. Linear ephemeris parameters and effective amplitudes were derived from detrended Kepler data. Our final sample consists of 41 spectroscopically confirmed mCP stars of which 39 are new discoveries, 5 candidate mCP stars, and 7 stars in which no chemical peculiarities could be established. Our targets populate the whole age range from zero-age main sequence to terminal-age main sequence and are distributed in the mass interval from 1.5 M_sun to 4 M_sun. About 25% of the mCP stars show a hitherto unobserved wealth of detail in their light curves indicative of complex surface structures. We report the discovery of two massive eccentric systems with BRITE data, $\tau$ Ori and $\tau$ Lib, showing heartbeat effects close to the periastron passage. $\tau$ Lib exhibits shallow eclipses that will soon vanish due to the apsidal motion in the system. We present a new few-parameter phenomenological model of light curves of eclipsing binaries and stars with transiting planets that is able to fit the observed light curves with the accuracy better than 1\% of their amplitudes. This study is an attempt to determine the metallicities of WUMa-type binary stars using spectroscopy. ~4,500 spectra collected at the David Dunlap Observatory were subject to the same Broadening Function processing to determine the combined line strength in the spectral window centered on the MgI triplet (5080-5285A). Individual integrated BF's were phase averaged to derive a single line-strength indicator. The sample was limited to 90 EW binaries with the strict phase-constancy of colors and without spectral contamination by companions. The best defined results were obtained for a F-type sub-sample (0.32<(B-V)0<0.62) of 52 stars for which the BF strengths could be interpolated in the model predictions. The metallicities, [M/H], for the F-type sub-sample indicate abundances roughly similar to the solar [M/H], but with a large scatter which is partly due to combined random and systematic errors. Because of a color trend resulting from limitations in our approach, we set the scale of metallicities to correspond to that derived from the m_1 index of the Stromgren photometry for F-type binaries. The trend-adjusted [M/H]1 are distributed within -0.65<[M/H]1<+0.50, with the spread reflecting genuine metallicity differences between stars. One half of the F-sub-sample binaries have [M/H]1 within -0.37<[M/H]1 +0.10, a median of -0.04 and a mean of -0.10, with a tail towards low metallicities, and a possible bias against very high metallicities. A parallel study of kinematic data, utilizing the most reliable and recently obtained proper motion and radial velocity data for 78 stars of the full sample, shows that the F-type sub-sample binaries have similar kinematic properties to solar neighborhood, thin-disk dwarfs with ages about 3 - 5.5 Gyr. A spectroscopic support survey of 103 objects observed by the MOST satellite is presented; 96 are variable stars with 83 of them being new MOST variable-star detections or stars with variability types verified and/or modified on the basis of the MOST data. Analysis of 241 medium-resolution spectra using the broadening-functions formalism yielded radial velocities, projected rotational velocities (for 31 targets for which it was possible) and spectral type estimates. Seven new spectroscopic binaries were discovered; orbital solutions are given for two of them (HD73709, and GSC 0814-0323). Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital radial velocity variations are presented for ten close binary systems: TZ Boo, VW Boo, EL Boo, VZ CVn, GK Cep, RW Com, V2610 Oph, V1387 Ori, AU Ser, and FT UMa. Our spectroscopy revealed two quadruple systems, TZ Boo and V2610 Oph, while three stars showing small photometric amplitudes, EL Boo, V1387 Ori, and FT UMa, were found to be triple systems. GK Cep is close binary with a faint third component. While most of the studied eclipsing systems are contact binaries, VZ CVn and GK Cep are detached or semi-detached double-lined binaries, and EL Boo, V1387 Ori and FT UMa are close binaries of uncertain binary type. The large fraction of triple and quadruple systems found in this sample supports the hypothesis of formation of close binaries in multiple stellar systems; it also demonstrates that low photometric amplitude binaries are a fertile ground for further discoveries of multiple systems., Comment: 5 figures, submitted to AJ

We present two series of MOST (Microvariability & Oscillations of STars) space-based photometry, covering nearly continuously 10 days in 2004 and 30 days in 2007, of selected variable stars in the upper Main Sequence of the old open cluster M67. New high-precision light curves were obtained for the blue-straggler binary/triple systems AH Cnc, ES Cnc and EV Cnc. The precision and phase coverage of ES Cnc and EV Cnc is by far superior to any previous observations. The light curve of ES Cnc is modelled in detail, assuming two dark photospheric spots and Roche geometry. An analysis of the light curve of AH Cnc indicates a low mass ratio (q about 0.13) and a high inclination angle for this system. Two new long-period eclipsing binaries, GSC 814-323 and HD75638 (non-members of M67) were discovered. We also present ground-based DDO spectroscopy of ES Cnc and of the newly found eclipsing binaries. Especially interesting is HD75638, a member of a visual binary, which must itself be a triple or a higher-multiplicity system. New light curves of two delta Scuti pulsators, EX Cnc and EW Cnc, have been analyzed leading to detection of 26 and 8 pulsation frequencies of high temporal stability., Comment: accepted to MNRAS, 2008 August 28

Photometric and spectroscopic results for the contact binary GSC 01387-00475 (ASAS 083128+1953.1) are presented. The existence of this binary with the orbital period of P = 0.2178 d strengthens the argument that the cut-off of the period distribution for contact binaries - until now defined by CC Comae - is very sharp. The only case of a still shorter period is known in a globular cluster where more compact contact configurations are in fact expected. While the spectroscopic orbit of GSC 01387-00475 is well defined, the low orbital inclination of the binary and the presence of a spectroscopic companion contributing about 1/3 of the total light conspire to reduce the photometric variability to ~0.09 mag. The photometric data are currently inadequate to identify the source of the small amplitude (0.02 - 0.03 mag) intrinsic variability of the system., Comment: to appear in MNRAS

Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital radial velocity variations are presented for ten close binary systems: EG Cep,V1191 Cyg, V1003 Her, BD+7_3142, V357 Peg, V407 Peg, V1123 Tau, V1128 Tau, HH UMa, and PY Vir. While most of the studied eclipsing systems are contact binaries, EG Cep is a detached or a semi-detached double-lined binary and V1003 Her is a close binary of an uncertain type seen at a very low inclination angle. We discovered two previously unknown triple systems, BD+7_3142 and PY Vir, both with late spectral-type (K2V) binaries. Of interest is the low-mass ratio (q = 0.106) close binary V1191 Cyg showing an extremely fast period increase; the system has a very short period for its spectral type and shows a W-type light curve, a feature rather unexpected for such a low mass-ratio system., Comment: Accepted by AJ. 19 pages including 5 figures

We present two-dimensional (radial velocity, orbital phase) spectroscopic results for the very low mass-ratio close binary AW UMa which strongly indicate that the spectroscopic mass ratio (q_sp = 0.10) does not agree with the photometrically derived one and that the widely adopted contact binary model appears to experience serious inconsistencies and limitations for this object. AW UMa is compared with V566 Oph (q_sp = 0.26) which we found to behave according to the contact model. Observed broadening functions of AW UMa can be interpreted by a very strong limb darkening and/or non-solid body rotation of the dominant primary component; the former assumption is unphysical while the differential rotation is not supported by an apparent stability of localized, dark features on the outer side of the primary. There are indications of the existence of an equatorial belt encompassing the whole system. All deficiencies in the interpretation and the discrepancy between the photometric and spectroscopic mass ratio of AW UMa can be solved within a new model of AW UMa where both components are detached and the system is submerged in a stream of hot, optically thick matter which mimics the stellar contact. While the masses and their ratio are correctly given by spectroscopy, the photometric picture is heavily modified by the matter engulfing both stars in the equatorial plane., Comment: 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS, January 28, 2008

The MOST photometric space mission discovered an eclipsing binary among its guide stars in June 2006 which combines a relatively large eccentricity e = 0.20 with an orbital period of only 2.27 days. HD 313926 appears to consist of two early-type stars of spectral type B3 - B7. It has a largest eccentricity among known early-type binaries with periods less than 3.5 d. Despite the large components indicated by its spectral type and light curve model, and its short period, the orbit of HD 313926 has not yet circularised so it is probably very young, even compared to other young B stars., Comment: accepted as a Letter by MNRAS

We present results of the CFHT adaptive optics search for companions of a homogeneous group of contact binary stars, as a contribution to our attempts to prove a hypothesis that these binaries require a third star to become so close as observed. In addition to companions directly discovered at separations of >=1", we introduced a new method of AO image analysis utilizing distortions of the AO diffraction ring pattern at separations of 0.07"-1". Very close companions, with separations in the latter range were discovered in systems HV Aqr, OO Aql, CK Boo, XY Leo, BE Scl, and RZ Tau. More distant companions were detected in V402 Aur, AO Cam, V2082 Cyg. Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital radial velocity variations are presented for ten close binary systems: OO Aql, CC Com, V345 Gem, XY Leo, AM Leo, V1010 Oph, V2612 Oph, XX Sex, W UMa, and XY UMa. Most of these binaries have been observed spectroscopically before, but our data are of higher quality and consistency than in the previous studies. While most of the studied eclipsing pairs are contact binaries, V1010 Oph is probably a detached or semi-detached double-lined binary and XY UMa is a detached, chromospherically active system whose broadening functions clearly show well defined and localized dark spots on the primary component. A particularly interesting case is XY Leo, which is a member of visually unresolved quadruple system composed of a contact binary and a detached, non-eclipsing, active binary with 0.805 days orbital period. V345 Gem and AM Leo are known members of visual binaries. We have attempted to establish an observational evidence for presence of distant companions which may have acquired and/or absorbed the angular momentum during evolution of multiple systems thus facilitating or enabling formation of contact binaries. In this preliminary investigation we use several techniques (some of them distance-independent) and mostly disregard detection biases of individual techniques in an attempt to establish a lower limit to the frequency of triple systems. While the whole sample of 151 contact binary stars brighter than Vmax = 10 mag. gives a firm lower limit of 42+/-5%, the corresponding number for the much better observed Northern-sky sub-sample is 59+/-8%.
