The integration of hard and soft skills has become increasingly important to employers. Colleges of agriculture and natural sciences can facilitate the development of these skills in their students. The purpose of this study was to explore impacts of a behavioral style learning unit on soft skill development with 15 students enrolled in a senior-level undergraduate capstone course. The research objectives were to (a) explore students' preflections and reflections for indications of soft skill development, (b) explore team dynamics, and (c) identify best practices for integrating a behavioral style learning unit into a capstone course. Qualitative content analysis methods and basic quantitative methods were used to examine the preflections and reflections of the students. Students found the behavioral assessment improved understanding of their own behavioral needs, and allowed them to flex their style to meet the needs of team members. Relationship compatibility, based on behavioral styles within teams, correlated with the ability of team members to accurately perceive their contributions to tasks, relative to peer-based perceptions of contributions. Based on these results, it is recommended that a behavioral style learning unit, or a similar psychological type unit, be integrated into courses where soft skills are a desired student learning outcome.

A subspecies of the Black-crowned Night-Heron ('Auku'u; Nycticorax nycticorax hoactli) inhabits wetlands throughout the Hawaiian Islands. The global population of Black-crowned Night-Herons primarily forages at night, extending foraging hours during the breeding season. No studies have examined Blackcrowned Night-Heron foraging activity in the Hawaiian Islands, but the population has been described as diurnal, based on anecdotal observations. The goal of our study was to compare foraging activity of the Black-crowned Night-Heron in Hawai'i during the day and at night. Surveys were conducted during daytime and nighttime to compare the number of strikes for prey made by focal individuals. In a brackish marsh, the number of strikes per focal individual was similar between daytime and nighttime, and no individuals were observed striking during surveys in a freshwater marsh, although individuals were present and presumably foraging. Black-crowned Night-Herons in this study appeared to have a broader temporal niche, perhaps due to minimal competition from diurnal wading birds, energy needs during breeding, or abundance of prey due to seasonal conditions. The Hawaiian Stilt (Himantopus mexicanus kmidseni) and Hawaiian Gallinule (Gallinula galeata sandvicensis) are federally endangered waterbirds endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Both species are conservation-reliant; their population persistence is dependent on invasive predator control and removal of invasive plants that degrade habitat. We present observations of successful nesting by one Hawaiian Stilt pair and one Hawaiian Gallinule pair at a site managed within an adaptive Indigenous agroecological framework on the island of O'ahu, Fiawai'i. The Hawaiian Stilt nest, found in February 2019, contained 4 eggs and produced 3 hatchlings, 2 of which were banded and monitored after hatching. The Hawaiian Gallinule nest, found in February 2020, contained 6 eggs and produced 5 hatchlings. Although no individuals were banded from this nest, 2 adults and 2 hatchlings were continuously observed in the nesting area after the eggs hatched. Lo 7 kalo Hawaiian wetland agroecosystems centered around the cultivation of kalo (taro; Colocasia esculenta), have the potential to expand Hawaiian waterbird habitat beyond state and federal protected areas. We are aware of unpublished accounts of Hawaiian waterbirds nesting in commercially fanned lo 7 kalo, but until now, there have been no previously published accounts of native waterbirds breeding in lo 7 kalo managed as Indigenous agroecosystems. Presentamos observaciones de anidacion exitosa de una pareja de monjita y una de gallareta en un sitio mancjado mediante practicas indigenas agroecologieas en la isla de O'ahu. Hawai. El nido de la monita, encontrado en febrero de 2019, contenia 4 huevos y produjo 3 polluelos, 2 de los cuales fueron anillados y monitoreados despues de eclosionar. Aunque ningun individuo de estc nido fue anillado. 2 adultos y 2 polluelos fueron continuamente observados en el area del nido despues de que los huevos eclosionaron. Los agroeeosistemas de humedales hawaianos (l'oi) tienen el poteneial de expandir el habitat de las aves acuaticas hawaianas mas alia de las areas protegidas estatales y federales. Sabemos que hay reportes de aves acuaticas hawaianas sin publiear en loi comercialmente cultivados. pero hasta ahora no habia reportes previos publicados de aves acuaticas nativas en l'oi bajo mancjo como agroeeosistemas indigenas. The Least Tern (Sternula antillarum) commonly breeds along coastal beaches and major interior rivers of North America and the Caribbean. Least Terns have been observed in Hawai'i since the 1970s; however, few breeding attempts have been documented. Nests have been discovered on the northwestern Flawaiian island of Midway Atoll and the southeastern Hawaiian island of Hawai'i. While nesting is thought to also occur on the islands of O'ahu and French Frigate Shoals based on observations of juvenile Least Terns, no observations of nests had been recorded for these islands prior to this study. In this paper we describe 2 accounts of discovering Least Tern eggs in the Ki'i Unit of the James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge on O'ahu, as well as several observations of breeding behavior in wetlands within the Pearl Harbor region of O'ahu. The first confirmed nesting location of the Hawaiian population of the Band-rumped Storm-Petrel (Oceanodroma castro), an endangered seabird, was recently discovered on Hawai'i island after decades of searching. Following the discovery, we analyzed nest site preferences of the Band-rumped Storm-Petrel at this site using a paired design. Band-rumped Storm-Petrels preferred deeper crevices compared with those available within 100 m of the nest sites. Physical and environmental characteristics of Hawaiian Bandrumped Storm-Petrel nest sites may aid conservation efforts including on-the-ground searches, removal of invasive mammalian predators, identification of potential translocation sites, and habitat restoration for this endangered species. The Chuck-will's-widow (Caprimulgus carolinensis) in the Bahama Islands has been regarded as a rare to uncommon winter visitor. We conducted breeding season surveys on the three largest northern islands (North Andros, Grand Bahama, and Great Abaco) to examine the status of this species. We encountered singing birds on most survey routes on all three islands, suggesting that sizeable breeding populations are widespread in the northern Bahamas with an aggregate estimate of 500-1,000 pairs. Management of avian species threatened by land use and climate change requires a thorough understanding of their site fidelity and dispersive behaviors. Among long-lived colonial seabird species, the behavior of returning to the natal colony to breed, i.e., natal philopatry, may increase the likelihood that adequate resources and mates are available, but it may also increase the potential for inbreeding, competition, and ecological traps. Successful management of seabird populations--using chick translocation to encourage colony establishment to locations having minimal threats--must also be informed by the likelihood that birds will return to the new sites. However, the extent of philopatry, and the traits that dictate variation across seabirds, have yet to be fully summarized. We evaluated whether seabirds returned to their natal colony at rates greater than those predicted by colony size and various dispersal variables, based on data gathered for 36 seabird species nesting in the British Isles and the Hawaiian Archipelago. We compiled long-term banding and census data across 663 colonies. A linear mixed-effects model was employed to determine the relationship between philopatry and colony demographics, wingspan (mobility), and spatial variables. Our results indicate that philopatric rates are higher in the Hawaiian Archipelago than in the British Isles. Seabird fledglings are often attracted to artificial, bright lights, leading to their grounding. This phenomenon is termed "fallout" and is associated with an increased risk of mortality from land-based threats. This study evaluated temporal trends and spatial factors, such as fallout clustering near lights and proximity to colonies, to inform targeted management actions. Standardized surveys were conducted from 2002 to 2010 for Wedge-tailed Shearwater Ardenna pacifica (WTSH) fallout on the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i, USA. First, yearly fallout counts along the transect showed a two-year cycle and identified 25 November as the date with the highest fallout across years. Second, artificial lights and utility lines were present in 94% and 83% of fallout locations, leading to significantly higher fallout rates at these locations compared to random points along the transect. Third, fallout decreased significantly as the distance from the colonies increased and was negligible farther than 5 km from the nearest colony. Overall, 60% of all fallout occurred along a 1.7 km section of the survey route, with 27% of this fallout occurring within 8 m of two light poles, highlighting the need for targeted management. Finally, the disposition outcomes of rescued shearwaters from non-fatal fallout were analyzed. Among grounded individuals that were recovered alive, 78% were admitted for rehabilitation with no injury and released. This suggests that rescue efforts during high-risk periods that are focused within 5 km of colonies, in fallout hot spots, are likely to enhance survival. Because little is known about the environmental drivers of WTSH fallout, our results specify when, where, and how targeted management could be used most effectively to reduce fallout on O'ahu.
