5. Toward Mutual Trust Modeling in Human-Robot Collaboration

Abstract

The recent revolution of intelligent systems made it possible for robots and autonomous systems to work alongside humans, collaborating with them and supporting them in many domains. It is undeniable that this interaction can have huge benefits for humans if it is designed properly. However, collaboration with humans requires a high level of cognition and social capabilities in order to gain humans acceptance. In all-human teams, mutual trust is the engine for successful collaboration. This applies to human-robot collaboration as well. Trust in this interaction controls over- and under-reliance. It can also mitigate some risk. Therefore, an appropriate trust level is essential for this new form of teamwork. Most research in this area has looked at trust of humans in machines, neglecting the mutuality of trust among collaboration partners. In this paper, we propose a trust model that incorporates this mutuality captures trust levels of both the human and the robot in real-time, so that robot can base actions on this, allowing for smoother, more natural interactions. This increases the human autonomy since the human does not need to monitor the robot behavior all the time.

Abstract

Professional caregivers often face complex situations in which they need the support of a colleague or a specialist. This is especially necessary for caregivers during their training or with less practice in certain tasks. Due to time and space restrictions, colleagues or specialists are not always available for local support. Remote support by streaming videos to a remote helper has been discussed in healthcare domains as a so-called teleconsultation. However, little is known about how to apply teleconsultation in care. We conducted a study with caregivers and remote helpers to compare head mounted devices (HMDs) for teleconsultation in care to two alternative solutions using smartphones. We found that despite lacking familiarity, HMDs have good potential for remote support in care, and that creating video streams with smartphones is not preferable for teleconsultations. We suggest that ideal support needs to balance freedom and guidance and suggest how such support needs to be further explored.

Abstract

Fairness is an important aspect for individuals and teams. This also applies to human-robot interaction (HRI). Especially if intelligent robots provide services to multiple humans, humans may feel treated unfairly by robots. Most work in this area deals with the aspects of fair algorithms, task allocation, and decision support. This work focuses on a different, yet little-explored perspective, which looks at fairness in HRI from a human-centered perspective in human-robot teams. We present an experiment in which a service robot was responsible for distributing resources among competing team members - in one condition with an efficient (but rather unfair) distribution algorithm and in another condition with an algorithm that was less efficient but could be considered fair. We investigated how the different strategies of distribution influence the perceived fairness and how this perceived fairness influenced the perception of the robot as such. Our study shows that humans might perceive technically efficient algorithms executed by a robot as unfair, especially if humans personally experience negative consequences. Interestingly, this perceived unfairness had a negative impact on human perception of the robot as such, which should be considered in the design of future robots. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
