1. A Self-Supervised Reinforcement Learning Approach for Fine-Tuning Large Language Models Using Cross-Attention Signals

Abstract

We propose a novel reinforcement learning framework for post training large language models that does not rely on human in the loop feedback. Instead, our approach uses cross attention signals within the model itself to derive a self supervised reward, thereby guiding iterative fine tuning of the model policy. By analyzing how the model attends to the input prompt during generation, we construct measures of prompt coverage, focus, and coherence. We then use these measures to rank or score candidate responses, providing a reward signal that encourages the model to produce well aligned, on topic text. In empirical comparisons against standard policy gradient methods and RL fine tuning with synthetic preference models, our method shows significant gains in prompt relevance and consistency over a non RL baseline. While it does not yet match the performance of fully human supervised RLHF systems, it highlights an important direction for scaling alignment with minimal human labeling. We provide a detailed analysis, discuss potential limitations, and outline future work for combining cross-attention based signals with smaller amounts of human feedback.

Abstract

Muon colliders offer a compelling opportunity to explore the TeV scale and conduct precision tests of the Standard Model, all within a relatively compact geographical footprint. This paper introduces a new detector concept, MAIA (Muon Accelerator Instrumented Apparatus), optimized for $\sqrt{s}=10$ TeV $\mu\mu$ collisions. The detector features an all-silicon tracker immersed in a 5T solenoid field. High-granularity silicon-tungsten and iron-scintillator calorimeters surrounding the solenoid capture high-energy electronic and hadronic showers, respectively, and support particle-flow reconstruction. The outermost subsystem comprises an air-gap muon spectrometer, which enables standalone track reconstruction for high-momentum muons. The performance of the MAIA detector is evaluated in terms of differential particle reconstruction efficiencies and resolutions. Beam-induced background (BIB) simulations generated in FLUKA are overlaid with single particle gun samples to assess detector reconstruction capabilities under realistic experimental conditions. Even with BIB, reconstruction efficiencies exceed 95% for energetic tracks, photons, and neutrons in the central region of the detector. Abstract

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is an emerging tech society with an opportunity to overcome geographic and social boundaries, in order to engage with the global market. However, the current tech landscape, dominated by Big Tech in Silicon Valley and other multinational companies in the Global North, tends to overlook the requirements of emerging economies such as PNG. This is becoming more obvious as issues such as algorithmic bias (in tech product deployments) and the digital divide (as in the case of non-affordable commercial software) are affecting PNG users. The Open Source Software (OSS) movement, based on extant research, is seen as a way to level the playing field in the digitalization and adoption of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) in PNG. This perspectives paper documents the outcome of the second International Workshop on BRIdging the Divides with Globally Engineered Software} (BRIDGES2023) in the hopes of proposing ideas for future research into ICT education, uplifting software engineering (SE) capability, and OSS adoption in promoting a more equitable digital future for PNG., Comment: 6 pages. 4. The Development of a Dialogical Pedagogical Agency in Initial Teacher Formation Programs: A Critical Inquiry

Abstract

Initial teacher formation is a permanent focus of attention on the part of research, as the value of education for the progress of society is well known. However, given the naturalization of instrumental criteria as common sense acquired in today's society, on occasion, initial teacher formation reproduces a technocratic perspective of education, not assisting a transformation into a fairer, ethically healthier, and politically more democratic society. This article is the result of doctoral research that addresses this concern, proposing that initial teacher formation could play a transformative role in society. Considering the Bourdieusian dialectical perspective of "agency," as well as elements from critical approach literature, this article particularly focuses on showing some results obtained regarding about the capacity for ethical/political/epistemic pedagogical agency that novice teachers show in their first professional experiences as teachers, discussing how important the development of this capacity is in initial teacher formation programs to prepare teachers to be able to transform education.

5. Game-Based Learning in Ghanaian Primary Schools: Listening to the Views of Teachers

Abstract

This research explores how primary school teachers use games to enhance pupils' learning and development of conceptual knowledge. The study employs an illustrative case study design; data was collected through interviews with thirty (30) teachers who were selected using purposive sampling technique. Twenty teachers had some knowledge of game-based learning, ten teachers, however, did not know anything about the concept game-based learning. The results show that the use of non-digital games of different kinds to engage pupils is common in the learning of Maths, English, and Science. Teachers ascribed positively that the integration of game-based learning motivates pupils to come to school, actively engages them in the learning process, helps pupils to easily assimilate lesson contents, makes lessons lively and fun, and builds collaborative skills amongst pupils. Inadequate resources, noisy classes, time constraints, large class sizes, the reluctance of some pupils to participate, and inadequate knowledge are challenges reported by the teachers.

Abstract

We show the existence of traveling front solutions in a diffusive classical SIS epidemic model and the SIS model with a saturating incidence in the size of the susceptible population. We investigate the situation where both susceptible and infected populations move around at a comparable rates, but small compared to the spatial scale. In this case, we show that traveling front solutions exist for each fixed positive speed. In the regime where the infected population diffuses slower than the susceptible population, we show the existence of traveling wave solutions for each fixed positive speed and describe their structure and dependence on the wave speed which as it is varied from 0 to infinity. In the regime where the infected population diffuses faster than the susceptible population, we derive a bound for the speeds of the fronts in this regime in which the infection propagates as a front. Moreover, for the classical SIS model we show that there is a case when the spread of the disease is governed by the Burgers-FKPP equation., Comment: 17 pages

Abstract

Hamilton's equations are fundamental for modeling complex physical systems, where preserving key properties such as energy and momentum is crucial for reliable long-term simulations. Geometric integrators are widely used for this purpose, but neural network-based methods that incorporate these principles remain underexplored. This work introduces SympFlow, a time-dependent symplectic neural network designed using parameterized Hamiltonian flow maps. This design allows for backward error analysis and ensures the preservation of the symplectic structure. SympFlow allows for two key applications: (i) providing a time-continuous symplectic approximation of the exact flow of a Hamiltonian system--purely based on the differential equations it satisfies, and (ii) approximating the flow map of an unknown Hamiltonian system relying on trajectory data. Abstract

This summary of the second Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry (TVLBAI) Workshop provides a comprehensive overview of our meeting held in London in April 2024, building on the initial discussions during the inaugural workshop held at CERN in March 2023. Like the summary of the first workshop, this document records a critical milestone for the international atom interferometry community. It documents our concerted efforts to evaluate progress, address emerging challenges, and refine strategic directions for future large-scale atom interferometry projects. 9. A Survey of H I and O VI Absorption Lines in the Outskirts of $z\lesssim0.3$ Galaxy Clusters

Abstract

The intracluster medium (ICM) in the far outskirts (r $>$ 2-3 R$_{200}$) of galaxy clusters interfaces with the intergalactic medium (IGM) and is theorized to comprise diffuse, multiphase gas. This medium may hold vital clues to clusters' thermodynamic evolution and far-reaching impacts on infalling, future cluster galaxies. The diffuse outskirts of clusters are well-suited for quasar absorption line observations, capable of detecting gas to extremely low column densities. We analyze 18 QSO spectra observed with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope whose lines of sight trace the gaseous environments of 26 galaxy clusters from within R$_{200}$ to 6 R$_{200}$ in projection. We measure the dN/dz and covering fraction of H I and O VI associated with the foreground clusters as a function of normalized impact parameter. We find the dN/dz for H I is consistent with the IGM field value for all impact parameter bins, with an intriguing slight elevation between 2 and 3 R$_{200}$. The dN/dz for O VI is also consistent with the field value (within 3$\sigma$) for all impact parameter bins, with potential elevations in dN/dz both within 1-2 R$_{200}$ and beyond 4 R$_{200}$ at $>2\sigma$. We propose physical scenarios that may give rise to these tentative excesses, such as a buildup of neutral gas at the outer accretion shock front and a signature of the warm-hot IGM. We do not find a systematic excess of potentially associated galaxies near the sightlines where O VI is detected; thus, the detected O VI does not have a clear circumgalactic origin., Comment: Submitted to ApJ, 33 pages, 11 primary figures, 2 tables, 25 supplementary figures

Abstract

Hamilton's equations of motion form a fundamental framework in various branches of physics, including astronomy, quantum mechanics, particle physics, and climate science. Classical numerical solvers are typically employed to compute the time evolution of these systems. However, when the system spans multiple spatial and temporal scales numerical errors can accumulate, leading to reduced accuracy. To address the challenges of evolving such systems over long timescales, we propose SympFlow, a novel neural network-based symplectic integrator, which is the composition of a sequence of exact flow maps of parametrised time-dependent Hamiltonian functions. This architecture allows for a backward error analysis: we can identify an underlying Hamiltonian function of the architecture and use it to define a Hamiltonian matching objective function, which we use for training. In numerical experiments, we show that SympFlow exhibits promising results, with qualitative energy conservation behaviour similar to that of time-stepping symplectic integrators., Comment: NeurReps 2024

12. The Relationship between International Students' Perceived Discrimination and Self-Reported Overall Health during COVID-19: Indirect Associations through Positive Emotions and Perceived Social Support

Abstract

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, cases of discrimination and hate crimes against minority populations including international students have soared in the U.S. This study explores the relationship between international students' perceived discrimination and their self-reported overall health and the role of social support and positive emotions in such relationship. In total, 203 international students studying at two U.S. universities participated in an online survey. The results indicated that: (1) when international students perceive higher levels of discrimination, they experience lower levels of positive emotions and have lower levels of perceived social support; and (2) positive emotions were significantly associated with both psychological distress and physical health. Perceived social support was only significantly associated with physical health not psychological distress. We also provided meaningful implications for higher educational institutions that strive to enhance international students' overall health.

14. A Daily Diary Study on Associations between School-Based Ethnic Discrimination and School Engagement

Abstract

Being the target of discriminatory actions because of their ethnicity can lead ethnic minority students to disengage from school. Research has relied on cross-sectional survey data to show that students who experience more frequent discrimination are more likely to be disengaged from school (i.e., between-person associations). Less is known about whether ethnic discrimination is responsible for day-to-day dynamic fluctuations in school engagement (i.e., within-person associations). The current study focuses on within-person processes to assess how different types (i.e., overt- vs. subtle behavior) and sources (i.e., peer vs. teacher) of school-based ethnic discrimination are linked to behavioral, emotional, and cognitive school engagement at the same- and next-day levels. Participants were secondary school students of Turkish and Arab descent (N = 87, M[subscript age] = 15, 62% female) in an ethnically diverse area of north-west Germany. Using an interval-contingent design, participants completed a daily diary once a day over a two week-period using a smartphone application. At the within-person level, multilevel models indicated that more frequent discrimination from teachers was associated with lower levels of cognitive engagement on the same day and emotional engagement on the next day. We found little evidence for links between any discrimination types and sources and behavioral school engagement. This study documents the negative consequences of experiencing school-based ethnic discrimination on student school engagement.

Abstract

BackgroundHIV is associated with increased risk of heart failure (HF) but data regarding phenotypes of HF and outcomes after HF diagnosis, especially within the safety net where half of people with HIV in the United States receive care, are less clear.Methods and resultsUsing an electronic health record cohort of all individuals with HF within a municipal safety-net system from 2001 to 2019 linked to the National Death Index Plus, we compared HF phenotypes, all-cause mortality, HF hospitalization, and cause of death for individuals with and without HIV. Among people with HF (n=14 829), 697 individuals had HIV (4.7%). People with HIV were diagnosed with HF 10 years younger on average. A higher proportion of people with HIV had a reduced ejection fraction at diagnosis (37.9% versus 32.7%). Adjusted for age, sex, and risk factors, coronary artery disease on angiography was similar by HIV status. Abstract

Meningeal solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) are rare and have a high frequency of local recurrence and distant metastasis. In a cohort of 126 patients (57 female, 69 male; mean age at surgery 53.0 years) with pathologically confirmed meningeal SFTs with extended clinical follow-up (median 9.9 years; range 15 days-43 years), we performed extensive molecular characterization including genome-wide DNA methylation profiling (n = 80) and targeted TERT promoter mutation testing (n = 98). Associations were examined with NAB2::STAT6 fusion status (n = 101 cases; 51 = ex5-7::ex16-17, 26 = ex4::ex2-3; 12 = ex2-3::exANY/other and 12 = no fusion) and placed in the context of 2021 Central Nervous System (CNS) WHO grade. NAB2::STAT6 fusion breakpoints (fusion type) were significantly associated with metastasis-free survival (MFS) (p = 0.03) and, on multivariate analysis, disease-specific survival (DSS) when adjusting for CNS WHO grade (p = 0.03). Abstract

Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial tumors in adults and are increasing in incidence due to the aging population and increased access to neuroimaging. While most exhibit nonmalignant behavior, a subset of meningiomas are biologically aggressive and are associated with treatment resistance, resulting in significant neurologic morbidity and even mortality. In recent years, meaningful advances in our understanding of the biology of these tumors have led to the incorporation of molecular biomarkers into their grading and prognostication. However, unlike other central nervous system (CNS) tumors, a unified molecular taxonomy for meningiomas has not yet been established and remains an overarching goal of the Consortium to Inform Molecular and Practical Approaches to CNS Tumor Taxonomy-Not Official World Health Organization (cIMPACT-NOW) working group. Additionally, clinical equipoise still remains on how specific meningioma cases and patient populations should be optimally managed. To address these existing gaps, members of the International Consortium on Meningiomas including field-leading experts, have prepared this comprehensive consensus narrative review directed toward clinicians, researchers, and patients. Included in this manuscript are detailed overviews of proposed molecular classifications, novel biomarkers, contemporary treatment strategies, trials on systemic therapies, health-related quality-of-life studies, and management strategies for unique meningioma patient populations. In each section, we discuss the current state of knowledge as well as ongoing clinical and research challenges to road map future directions for further investigation.

Abstract

Key HIV cure strategies involve reversing immune dysfunction and limiting the proliferation of infected T cells. We evaluate the safety of sirolimus, a mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor, in people with HIV (PWH) and study the impact of sirolimus on HIV-1 reservoir size and HIV-1-specific immunity in a single-arm study of 20 weeks of treatment in PWH on antiretroviral therapy (ART). Sirolimus treatment does not impact HIV-1-specific CD8 T cell responses but leads to a significant decrease in CD4+ T cell-associated HIV-1 DNA levels at 20 weeks of therapy in the primary efficacy population (n = 16; 31% decline, p = 0.008). This decline persists for at least 12 weeks following cessation of the study drug. Sirolimus treatment also leads to a significant reduction in CD4+ T cell cycling and PD-1 expression on CD8+ lymphocytes. These data suggest that homeostatic proliferation of infected cells, an important mechanism for HIV persistence, is an intriguing therapeutic target.

Abstract

Modelling longitudinal data is an important yet challenging task. These datasets can be high-dimensional, contain non-linear effects and time-varying covariates. Gaussian process (GP) prior-based variational autoencoders (VAEs) have emerged as a promising approach due to their ability to model time-series data. However, they are costly to train and struggle to fully exploit the rich covariates characteristic of longitudinal data, making them difficult for practitioners to use effectively. In this work, we leverage linear mixed models (LMMs) and amortized variational inference to provide conditional priors for VAEs, and propose LMM-VAE, a scalable, interpretable and identifiable model. We highlight theoretical connections between it and GP-based techniques, providing a unified framework for this class of methods. Abstract

Memristor has been identified as the fourth fundamental circuit element by Dr. Leon Chua in 1971 and since then it has gathered a lot of interest because of its non-volatility and are considered as a viable solution to the beyond CMOS era computation. Recently, memristor have been used to perform basic logic operations like AND, OR, NAND, NOR, XOR etc. and are also used in applications like Dot Product Engine, Convolution Neural Networks etc. This paper presents a new behavioural model of memristor then using it to build a 32-bit ripple carry adder. The paper later compares the area, power and time delay of the 32 bit Ripple Carry Adder using memristor with the 45nm CMOS technology and highlights its advantages and pitfalls.

Abstract

Low-resource languages often face challenges in acquiring high-quality language data due to the reliance on translation-based methods, which can introduce the translationese effect. This phenomenon results in translated sentences that lack fluency and naturalness in the target language. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for data collection by leveraging storyboards to elicit more fluent and natural sentences. Our method involves presenting native speakers with visual stimuli in the form of storyboards and collecting their descriptions without direct exposure to the source text. We conducted a comprehensive evaluation comparing our storyboard-based approach with traditional text translation-based methods in terms of accuracy and fluency. Human annotators and quantitative metrics were used to assess translation quality. The results indicate a preference for text translation in terms of accuracy, while our method demonstrates worse accuracy but better fluency in the language focused., Comment: published at LREC-COLING 2024

Abstract

Different imaging modalities are used to extract the diverse information carried in an optical field. Two prominent modalities include bright field and phase contrast microscopy that can visualize the amplitude and phase features of a sample, respectively. However, capturing both of these images on the same camera typically requires interchanging optical components. Metasurfaces are ultra-thin nanostructures that can merge both of these operations into a single miniaturized device. Here, a silicon-based metasurface that supports a Mie resonance is demonstrated to perform near-infrared phase contrast and bright field multi-modal microscopy that can be tuned by changing the polarization of the illumination. We performed experiments using optical fields with phase variations synthesized by a spatial light modulator and introduced by propagation through semi-transparent samples, including C. elegans, unstained human prostate cancer cells and breast tissue.
