Search

We present a new search for variable stars in the Galactic globular cluster M28 (NGC 6626). The search is based on a series of BVI images obtained with the SMARTS Consortium's 1.3m telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, Chile. The search was carried out using the ISIS v2.2 image subtraction package. We find a total of 25 variable stars in the field of the cluster, 9 being new discoveries. Of the newly found variables, 1 is an ab-type RR Lyrae star, 6 are c-type RR Lyrae, and 2 are long-period/semi-regular variables. V22, previously classified as a type II Cepheid, appears as a bona-fide RRc in our data. In turn, V20, previously classified as an ab-type RR Lyrae, could not be properly phased with any reasonable period. The properties of the ab-type RR Lyrae stars in M28 appear most consistent with an Oosterhoff-intermediate classification, which is unusual for bona-fide Galactic globulars clusters. However, the cluster's c-type variables do not clearly support such an Oosterhoff type, and a hybrid Oosterhoff I/II system is accordingly another possibility, thus raising the intriguing possibility of multiple populations being present in M28. We present a B, V color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the Milky Way dwarf satellite Ursa Major II (UMa II), spanning the magnitude range from V ~ 15 to V ~ 23.5 mag and extending over a 18 {\times} 18 arcmin2 area centered on the galaxy. Our photometry goes down to about 2 magnitudes below the galaxy's main sequence turn-off, that we detected at V ~ 21.5 mag. We have discovered a bona-fide RR Lyrae variable star in UMa II, which we use to estimate a conservative dereddened distance modulus for the galaxy of (m-M)0 = 17.70{\pm}0.04{\pm}0.12 mag, where the first error accounts for the uncertainties of the calibrated photometry, and the second reflects our lack of information on the metallicity of the star. The corresponding distance to UMa II is 34.7 {\pm} 0.6 ({\pm} 2.0) kpc. Our photometry shows evidence of a spread in the galaxy subgiant branch, compatible with a spread in metal abundance in the range between Z=0.0001 and Z=0.001. Based on our estimate of the distance, a comparison of the fiducial lines of the Galactic globular clusters (GCs) M68 and M5 ([Fe/H]=-2.27 {\pm} 0.04 dex and -1.33 {\pm} 0.02 dex, respectively), with the position on the CMD of spectroscopically confirmed galaxy members, may suggest the existence of stellar populations of different metal abundance/age in the central region of UMa II., Comment: To appear in ApJ

We present new time-series CCD photometry, in the B and V bands, for the moderately metal-rich ([Fe/H] ~ -1.3) Galactic globular cluster (GC) M62 (NGC 6266). The present dataset is the largest obtained so far for this cluster, and consists of 168 images per filter, obtained with the Warsaw 1.3m telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory (LCO) and the 1.3m telescope of the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO), in two separate runs over the time span of three months. The procedure adopted to detect the variable stars was the optimal image subtraction method (ISIS v2.2), as implemented by Alard. The photometry was performed using both ISIS and DAOPHOT/ALLFRAME. We have identified 245 variable stars in the cluster fields that have been analyzed so far, of which 179 are new discoveries. Of these variables, 133 are fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars (RRab), 76 are first overtone (RRc) pulsators, 4 are type II Cepheids, 25 are long-period variables (LPV), 1 is an eclipsing binary, and 6 are not yet well classified. Such a large number of RR Lyrae stars places M62 among the top two most RR Lyrae-rich (in the sense of total number of RR Lyrae stars present) GCs known in the Galaxy, second only to M3 (NGC 5272) with a total of 230 known RR Lyrae stars. Since this study covers most but not all of the cluster area, it is not unlikely that M62 is in fact the most RR Lyrae-rich GC in the Galaxy. In like vein, we were also able to detect the largest sample of LPV's known in a Galactic GC. We analyze a variety of Oosterhoff type indicators for the cluster, and conclude that M62 is an Oosterhoff type I system. This is in good agreement with the moderately high metallicity of the cluster, in spite of its predominantly blue horizontal branch morphology -- which is more typical of Oosterhoff type II systems. We present the results of a search for variable stars in the globular cluster NGC 5286, which has recently been suggested to be associated with the Canis Major dwarf spheroidal galaxy. 57 variable stars were detected, only 19 of which had previously been known. Among our detections one finds 52 RR Lyrae (22 RRc and 30 RRab), 4 LPV's, and 1 type II Cepheid of the BL Herculis type. Periods are derived for all of the RR Lyrae as well as the Cepheid, and BV light curves are provided for all the variables. The mean period of the RRab variables is = 0.656 days, and the number fraction of RRc stars is N(c)/N(RR) = 0.42, both consistent with an Oosterhoff II (OoII) type -- thus making NGC 5286 one of the most metal-rich ([Fe/H] = -1.67; Harris 1996) OoII globulars known to date. The minimum period of the \RRab's, namely Pab,min = 0.513 d, while still consistent with an OoII classification, falls towards the short end of the observed Pab,min distribution for OoII globular clusters. As was recently found in the case of the prototypical OoII globular cluster M15 (NGC 7078), the distribution of stars in the Bailey diagram does not strictly conform to the previously reported locus for OoII stars. We provide Fourier decomposition parameters for all of the RR Lyrae stars detected in our survey, and discuss the physical parameters derived therefrom. The values derived for the RRc's are not consistent with those typically found for OoII clusters, which may be due to the cluster's relatively high metallicity -- the latter being confirmed by our Fourier analysis of the ab-type RR Lyrae light curves. We present BV photometry of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 5286, based on 128 V frames and 133 B frames, and covering the entire face of the cluster. Our photometry reaches almost two magnitudes below the turn-off level, and is accordingly suitable for an age analysis. Field stars were removed statistically from the cluster's color-magnitude diagram (CMD), and a differential reddening correction applied, thus allowing a precise ridgeline to be calculated. Using the latter, a metallicity of [Fe/H] = -1.70 +/- 0.10 in the Zinn & West scale, and [Fe/H] = -1.47 +/- 0.02 in the Carretta & Gratton scale, was derived on the basis of several parameters measured from the red giant branch, in good agreement with the value provided in the Harris catalog. Comparing the NGC 5286 CMD with the latest photometry for M3 by P. B. Stetson (2008, priv. comm.), and using VandenBerg isochrones for a suitable chemical composition, we find evidence that NGC 5286 is around 1.7 +/- 0.9 Gyr older than M3. This goes in the right sense to help account for the blue horizontal branch of NGC 5286, for which we provide a measurement of several morphological indicators. If NGC 5286 is a bona fide member of the Canis Major dwarf spheroidal galaxy, as previously suggested, our results imply that the latter's oldest components may be at least as old as the oldest Milky Way globular clusters., Comment: 7 pages, 11 figures. We report on the detection of variable stars in the Canes Venatici II (CVn II) dwarf spheroidal galaxy, a new satellite of the Milky Way recently discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We also present a V, B-V color-magnitude diagram that reaches V = 25.5 mag, showing the galaxy's main sequence turn off at V = 24.5 mag and revealing several candidate blue straggler stars. Two RR Lyrae stars have been identified within the half-light radius of CVn II,a fundamental-mode variable (RRab) with period P_ab = 0.743 days, and a first-overtone (RRc) RR Lyrae star with P_c = 0.358 days. The rather long periods of these variables along with their position on the period-amplitude diagram support an Oosterhoff type II classification for CVn II. The average apparent magnitude of the RR Lyrae stars, = 21.48 +/- 0.02 mag, is used to obtain a precision distance modulus of mu_0 = 21.02 +/- 0.06 mag and a corresponding distance of 160(+4,-5} kpc, for an adopted reddening E(B-V) = 0.015 mag., Comment: Submitted to ApJ Letters

We describe the status of a project whose main goal is to detect variability along the extreme horizontal branch of the globular cluster NGC 6752. Based on Magellan 6.5m data, preliminary light curves are presented for some candidate variables. By combining our time-series data, we also produce a deep CMD of unprecedented quality for the cluster which reveals a remarkable lack of main sequence binaries, possibly pointing to a low primordial binary fraction., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in "Hot Subdwarf Stars and Related Objects", ASP Conf. Variable stars have been identified for the first time in Fornax 4, the globular cluster located near the center of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. By applying the image subtraction technique to B,V time series photometry obtained with the MagIC camera of the 6.5-m Magellan/Clay telescope and with the wide field imager of the 4-m Blanco/CTIO telescope, we detected 27 RR Lyrae stars (22 fundamental mode, 3 first overtone, and 2 double-mode pulsators) in a 2.4'x2.4' area centered on Fornax 4. The average and minimum periods of the ab-type RR Lyrae stars, = 0.594 d and P(ab,min)=0.5191 d, respectively, as well as the revised position of the cluster in the horizontal branch type--metallicity plane, all consistently point to an Oosterhoff-intermediate status for the cluster, unlike what is seen for the vast majority of Galactic globular clusters, but in agreement with previous indications for the other globular clusters in Fornax. The average apparent magnitude of the RR Lyrae stars located within 30 arcsec from the cluster center is =21.43 +/- 0.03 mag (sigma=0.10 mag, average on 12 stars), leading to a true distance modulus of (m-M)o=20.64 +/- 0.09 mag or (m-M)o=20.53 +/- 0.09 mag, depending on whether a low ([Fe/H]=-2.0) or a moderately high ([Fe/H]=-1.5) metallicity is adopted., Comment: Apj, in press

We analyse the properties of three unusual dwarf galaxies in the Centaurus A group discovered with the HIPASS survey. From their optical morphology they appear to be low surface brightness dwarf spheroidals, yet they are gas-rich (M_{HI}/L_{B} > 1) with gas-mass-to-stellar light ratios larger than typical dwarf irregular galaxies. Therefore these systems appear different from any dwarfs of the Local Group. They should be favoured hosts for starburst, whereas we find a faint star formation region in only one object. We have obtained 21-cm data and Hubble Space Telescope photometry in V and I bands, and have constructed Colour Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs) to investigate their stellar populations and to set a constraint on their age. From the comparison of the observed and model CMDs we infer that all three galaxies are at least older than 2 Gyr (possibly even as old as 10 Gyr) and remain gas-rich because their star formation rates (SFRs) have been very low (< 10^{-3} M_{sun}/yr) throughout. In such systems, star formation (SF) appears to have been sporadic and local, though one object (HIPASS J1321--31) has a peculiar red plume in its CMD suggesting that many of its stars were formed in a "miniburst" 300 - 500 Myr ago. Using the Hubble Space Telescope, we have obtained the first color-magnitude diagram (CMD) to reach the main-sequence turnoff of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6388. From a comparison between the cluster CMD and 47 Tucanae's, we find that the bulk of the stars in these two clusters have nearly the same age and chemical composition. On the other hand, our results indicate that the blue horizontal branch and RR Lyrae components in NGC 6388 are intrinsically overluminous, which must be due to one or more, still undetermined, non-canonical second parameter(s) affecting a relatively minor fraction of the stars in NGC 6388., Comment: 4 pages, 3 colored figures. We have applied Alard's image subtraction method (ISIS v2.1) to the observations of the globular clusters NGC 6388 and NGC 6441 previously analyzed using standard photometric techniques (DAOPHOT, ALLFRAME). In this reanalysis of observations obtained at CTIO, besides recovering the variables previously detected on the basis of our ground-based images, we have also been able to recover most of the RR Lyrae variables previously detected only in the analysis of Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 observations of the inner region of NGC6441. In addition, we report five possible new variables not found in the analysis of the HST observations of NGC 6441. This dramatically illustrates the capabilities of image subtraction techniques applied to ground-based data to recover variables in extremely crowded fields. We have also detected twelve new variables and six possible variables in NGC 6388 not found in our previous ground-based studies. The revised mean period for RRab stars in NGC 6388 is 0.676 day, while the mean period of RRab stars in NGC 6441 is unchanged at 0.759 day. These values are among the largest known for any galactic globular cluster. We present a long-term project aimed at completing the census of (bright) variable stars in Galactic globular clusters. We report the discovery of a sizeable, previously unknown variable star population in the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal globular clusters NGC 5634, Arp 2 and Terzan 8. We present the first results of a variable star search in the field and in the globular clusters of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Variable stars were identified using the Image Subtraction Technique (Alard 2000) on time-series data obtained with the ESO 2.2 m and the Magellan 6.5 m telescopes. The variable star sample includes RR Lyrae stars, Dwarf Cepheids and Anomalous Cepheids. We report on the discovery of a large number of RR Lyrae variable stars in the moderately metal-rich Galactic globular cluster M62 (NGC 6266), which places it among the top three most RR Lyrae-rich globular clusters known. Likely members of the cluster in our studied field, from our preliminary number counts, include about 130 fundamental-mode (RRab) pulsators, with = 0.548 d, and about 75 first-overtone (RRc) pulsators, with = 0.300 d. The average periods and the position of the RRab variables with well-defined light curves in the Bailey diagram both suggest that the cluster is of Oosterhoff type I. However, the morphology of the cluster's horizontal branch (HB) is strikingly similar to that of the Oosterhoff type II globular cluster M15 (NGC 7078), with a dominant blue HB component and a very extended blue tail. Since M15 and M62 differ in metallicity by about one dex, we conclude that metallicity, at a fixed HB type, is a key parameter determining the Oosterhoff status of a globular cluster and the position of its variables in the Bailey diagram., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. We present a theoretical calibration of the RR Lyrae period-luminosity (PL) relation in the UBVRIJHK Johnsons-Cousins-Glass system. Our theoretical work is based on calculations of synthetic horizontal branches (HBs) for several different metallicities, fully taking into account evolutionary effects besides the effect of chemical composition. Extensive tabulations of our results are provided, including convenient analytical formulae for the calculation of the coefficients of the period-luminosity relation in the different passbands as a function of HB type. We also provide "average" PL relations in IJHK, for applications in cases where the HB type is not known a priori; as well as a new calibration of the M_V - [M/H] relation. These can be summarized as follows: M_I = +0.471 - 1.132 log P + 0.205 log Z, M_J = -0.141 - 1.773 log P + 0.190 log Z, M_H = -0.551 - 2.313 log P + 0.178 log Z, M_K = -0.597 - 2.353 log P + 0.175 log Z, and M_V = +2.288 + 0.882 log Z + 0.108 (log Z)^2., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures. We present HST/WFPC2 observations (F555W, F814W) and ATCA high resolution HI maps of three gas-rich dwarf galaxies in the Centaurus A group discovered in two blind 21-cm surveys (HIPASS, HIDEEP). We compare their individual properties and discuss their star formation history. Although we can not constrain the age of the oldest population from the diagrams very well, the presence of an extended population of red giant stars suggests that these systems were not formed recently. We discuss the Oosterhoff classification of the unusual, metal-rich globular clusters NGC 6388 and NGC 6441, on the basis of new evolutionary models computed for a range of metallicities. Our results confirm the difficulty in unambiguously classifying these clusters into either Oosterhoff group, and also question the view that RR Lyrae stars in Oosterhoff type II globular clusters can all be evolved from a position on the blue zero-age horizontal branch., Comment: 2 pages, no figures.
