Does economic deprivation fuel terrorist recruitment? A large empirical literature has explored this question, but the findings remain contradictory and inconclusive. We argue that this is due to inconsistencies in the way deprivation has been defined and measured. This article identifies these deficiencies and provides a roadmap toward more precise measurement of deprivation and consequently toward a better understanding of its potential impact on the emergence of terrorism. More specifically, we propose a conceptual framework that distinguishes three different dimensions of relative deprivation: individual vs. collective, objective vs. subjective, and synchronic vs. diachronic. Combining them yields eight different mechanisms that could link economic status to terrorist radicalization. Drawing inspiration from fields such as conflict studies, social psychology, and political behavior, we outline some measurement approaches that could capture the mechanisms in a targeted way. Preventive detention is a measure of deprivation of personal liberty that is applied to a person during an investigation to ensure their appearance in the judicial process, even without a prior sentence. It is a judicial decision made to order the preventive detention of an individual accused of committing a crime, to ensure that the process is not obstructed or delayed. This precautionary measure is the most extreme since it implies deprivation of liberty and must meet certain requirements to be applied by the judge in charge of the case. In conclusion, the theoretical and legal bases that support preventive detention contrast notably with the real situation in Ecuador, evidencing a legal problem in the country. In this context, a judicial system influenced by the media is observed, where judges and prosecutors usually accuse and hand down sentences based on public opinion, without respecting the limits established by Criminal Law. Con la propagación de la pandemia causada por el COVID-19, la pobreza aumentó en todo el mundo y con ello la desigualdad, siendo los países en vías de desarrollo, como el Ecuador, los que se vieron más afectados. En función de esta problemática, este trabajo se desarrolló con el objetivo de analizar los efectos causados por el COVID-19 en la pobreza multidimensional de Ecuador, para lo cual se calculó el índice de pobreza multidimensional y se determinó la contribución absoluta de cada indicador de privación sobre el índice. Los resultados obtenidos demostraron que Ecuador tuvo un incremento de 1,11 puntos en el índice de pobreza multidimensional entre 2019 y 2020, principalmente generado por el aumento del desempleo y el empleo inadecuado, por lo que se propone ahondar esfuerzos en la articulación e integración de las instituciones gubernamentales y de la sociedad civil para garantizar la plena cobertura de la asistencia social, así como fortalecer los pisos de protección social existentes en Ecuador.

Introducción. El suicidio es un problema clave de salud pública. La situación de privación de libertad es un riesgo aumentado para el suicidio. Hay un aumento de la prevalencia de depresión dentro de las prisiones y su identificación y tratamiento disminuye el riesgo. Objetivo. Determinar el riesgo de suicidio y depresión en mujeres privadas de libertad en una correccional. Metodología. Estudio descriptivo de corte transversal de una muestra por conveniencia de mujeres de una correccional de mujeres en Paraguay. Se utilizó un cuestionario socio-demográfico, la Escala de Suicidio de Plutchik, y el Inventario de Depresión de Beck, previa firma de consentimiento informado que explicó los objetivos del estudio y la participación voluntaria y anónima. Se analizó los datos con el paquete estadístico SPSS versión 15.0. Resultados. Participaron del estudio 108 mujeres entre 20 a 70 años de edad (media: 38 ± 12), 25,9% (n=28) alcanzó escolaridad secundaria completa u universitaria (12%). El 76,8% tenía entre 1 a 5 años de privación de libertad. El 38 % (41) del grupo tenía depresión; 36,1% (n=39) presentó riesgo suicida, 25,9% (n=28) riesgo leve, 7,4% (n=8) riesgo moderado y 2,8% (n=3) riesgo grave. Se encontró asociación altamente significativa entre la presencia de depresión y riesgo suicida (OR: 4,89 IC95% 2,1-11,4). El porcentaje de riesgo suicida fue mayor al de la población general y a cifras arrojadas por otros estudios similares en centros penitenciarios en américa latina.

El presente trabajo de investigación presenta el cálculo del Índice Multidimensional de Calidad del Empleo para Bolivia basado en método Alkire-Foster de doble conteo para medir privaciones traslapadas. Como base de datos se emplean las Encuestas de Hogares de las gestiones 2011 a 2019, realizadas por el Instituto Nacional de Estadística. Se determina que en promedio, el 69.18% de la población de ocupados cuentan con empleos de mala calidad durante todo el periodo de estudio, y tienen una privación media en el 67.52 % de las tres dimensiones consideradas para la modelación: Ingresos, Estabilidad laboral y Condiciones de Empleo con sus respectivas subdimensiones. Asimismo, se muestra que el valor del índice se puede atribuir en 40% al aporte de la dimensión de Ingresos, que muestra que el 58 % de la población ocupada gana igual o menos de dos salarios mínimos nacionales. El 23% del valor del índice se debe al tipo de contrato que firman los trabajadores, de los cuales el 64 % no cuentan con un contrato dentro de su actual empleo. Finalmente, el 11% se atribuye a la falta de acceso a los fondos de pensiones por parte del 62 % de la población ocupada dentro de sus actuales empleos.

Este artículo se ocupa de reconstruir y evaluar los principales argumentos epicúreos contra la idea de que la muerte es un mal para quien muere. Para combatir la vida angustiada por el temor a la muerte, Epicuro y Lucrecio despliegan una serie de razonamientos que aspiran a mostrar la irracionalidad o falta de justificación de este temor. Compartiendo la idea de que una vida eudaimónica requiere que asumamos nuestra naturaleza mortal, se defiende, sin embargo, que esto no nos fuerza a aceptar la tesis mucho más radical de que “la muerte no es nada para nosotros”. En particular, se arguye que los argumentos discutidos invalidan el temor al hecho mismo de estar muerto, pero no otros temores a no seguir viviendo.

En los fragmentos del diálogo Eudemo aparece el hápax "privación indefinida" (stéresis aóristos). El significado de esta extraña construcción ha sido muy discutido por la crítica contemporánea. Dependiendo de su interpretación cada crítico ha ofrecido una teoría diferente sobre la evolución del pensamiento del Estagirita y la datación de sus obras. En este artículo presentamos el estado actual de la cuestión y proponemos una interpretación integradora de las propuestas anteriores, pero prescindiendo de aquellos elementos sobrevenidos o incluso insostenibles según la crítica actual.

"Are Epicurus' and Lucretius' Arguments Against the Fear of Death Convincing?". This article reconstructs and evaluates the main Epicurean arguments against the claim that death is an evil for the one who dies. To combat the anguished life of fear of death, Epicurus and Lucretius deploy a series of arguments that aim to show the irrationality or lack of justification of this fear. While sharing the idea that a eudaimonic life requires us to assume our mortal nature, it is argued, however, that this does not force us to accept the much more radical claim that "death is nothing to us." In particular, it is contended that the arguments discussed invalidate the fear of the fact of being dead, but not any fear of not continuing to live. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author describes the prevalence of compulsion to child pornography and notes the sparsity of psychoanalytic engagement with the phenomenon. The author describes his work in a psychoanalytic treatment with a man plagued by a compulsion to child pornography and illustrates the internal dynamics of unmetabolized trauma, identifications and erasure. At the center of the healing process is the patient's painful recognition that the compulsion embodies a destruction of self and that he is identified with both the child victim and the perpetrators in the pornographic scenarios. Aims the work to dissert about the importance of the concept of segregation, in the evaluation of policies for reducing human deprivation. He argues that the production of discursive counterhegemonies by formulators and evaluators of the action of the Brazilian State in history is in substance a political action. It then shows the evolution of indicators of human deprivation in Brazil, Recife/PE and Natal/RN, highlighting the disparity between the reduction of poverty and inequalities between 1991 and 2010. The work makes final considerations about the concept of segregation to conclude that its incorporation in the actions of evaluation would imply the expansion of the political power and enjoyment of the cities by the target groups of the actions of the Brazilian State for the reduction of poverty and inequality. Poverty is usually measured at the household level; however, there is growing evidence that households do not share their resources equally. Using data from the material deprivation module in the 2014 Living Conditions Survey this article provides new insight on intra-household inequality in contexts of recession. Households strive to protect children from poverty but are not always able to do so. The combination of adult and child-specific deprivation measures permits the identification of a subset of particularly vulnerable households that are often deprived of basic needs. Additionally, a substantial minority of children do not have their social, leisure and extended educational needs covered. The financial and economic crisis that hit Europe since 2009 has highlighted the need to measure more effectively the impact that certain exogenous shocks can have in the social field. In order to fill this gap and to provide a statistical tool useful to measure phenomena evolving over time, we perform a non-compensatory time analysis of material deprivation in Europe by using the quantitative method known as Adjusted Mazziotta and Pareto Index (AMPI). Material deprivation is a proxy to identify the most suffering groups of people in a specific environment. We consider the material deprivation as the sum of economic stress and forced lack of durable goods. Using Eurostat EU-SILC data, we aim at determining which countries have suffered the most material deprivation and identifying clusters of deprivation. We also determine how material deprivation is evolved over time, from 2005 to 2019. Subsequently, through Influence Analysis, the robustness of the index obtained is evaluated. Our results show that the material deprivation gap between Eastern and Mediterranean countries and all the remaining countries, which already existed before the economic crisis, seems to have widened in the years up to 2015. This study aimed to analyze the profile of recyclable waste pickers in the municipality of Laranjeiras do Sul, Paraná, Brazil, and to relate to Amartya Sen’s deprivation of liberty theory. The identification of the profile of recyclable waste pickers occurred from a survey of primary data through interviews. The research is characterized as a case study and was constructed from a bibliographical survey, using descriptive and explanatory methods, with a quantitative and qualitative approach. The results showed that the waste pickers coexist with numerous deprivations of freedoms, such as low schooling and income; advanced age without access to social security; lack of basic documents for fundamental rights access; deprivations that limit the reach of a minimum level of living conditions. Knowledge and understanding about the impact of cumulative adverse experiences on the health and wellbeing of children, adolescents, and adults has rapidly expanded over the past 30 years. Despite the invaluable attention and support this proliferation has drawn to the importance of early childhood experiences, we believe that it is time to move beyond broad indices of risk and toward more specific and individualized understanding of how risk exposures are linked to clinical outcomes in young children. Within infant and early childhood mental health, there is a need for greater specificity in linking adverse caregiving experiences in early life to psychopathology in children. We highlight a framework distinguishing experiences of trauma from experiences of deprivation and use the examples of posttraumatic stress disorder and reactive attachment disorder to demonstrate how greater specificity in our understanding of early adverse caregiving can lead to more accurate and targeted diagnosis and treatment for young children. Both researchers and clinicians benefit from an approach to gain a greater appreciation of the links between specific types of experiences and outcomes in the children that we serve. This paper describes an experience of group art therapy with institutionalized children. Although several case studies are examined, an overview of the institution in itself is included as a variable to be considered in any art therapy project. For any art therapist active in an institutional setting, it is essential to work hand in hand with a multidisciplinary team, although this has not necessarily been the case in this particular experience.

En su Periphyseon, Juan Escoto Eriugena presenta la noción de nihil per excellentiam. Es famosa la aplicación que hace de ella para elaborar su interpretación de la fórmula ex nihilo (o, como él prefiere: de nihilo) de Macabeos 7,28, en el libro III del Peryphyseon. El pensador carolingio defiende allí su idea de nihil entendida como la excelencia de la “super-esencialidad” divina. Sin embargo, también es posible encontrar en Eriugena un análisis de la noción de no-ser entendido como privación, ya presente en su De praedestinatione liber. Este trabajo pretende mostrar el íntimo vínculo entre este análisis y su interpretación de los Macabeos.

En esta investigación se plantea como objetivo aplicar el método “Satisfacción de necesidades absolutas de energía” para analizar la pobreza energética en México a nivel subnacional. Los resultados muestran que 36,7% de los hogares mexicanos viven en pobreza energética, encontrando que los bienes económicos “confort térmico”, “refrigerador eficiente” y “estufa de gas o eléctrica” son los que presentan mayores niveles de privación. Se encontraron seis grupos de entidades federativas con características similares, escenario que evidencia la importancia de la dimensión geográfica en este tema. Se propone integrar la pobreza energética como una dimensión clave de la política nacional de sustentabilidad energética.

Community asset transfer enables local groups to own or manage a government-owned facility and related services. For critics, it is merely an extension of rollback neoliberalism, permitting the state to withdraw from welfare and transfer risk from local government to ill-defined communities. The paper uses quantitative and case-study data from Northern Ireland to demonstrate its transformative potential by challenging the notion of private property rights, enabling communities to accumulate and creating local consumption circuits. It suggests that asset-led social enterprises are entangled in a mix of pro-market and alternative economic strategies which are necessarily traded off each other in the reproduction of social value. There is not an ethically pure form of asset transfer but the tactical adaptation of different modes of working, including the enhancement of state services as well as more independent forms of economic and social organisation. However, the analysis points to the political weaknesses of three specific projects and in particular, the lack of corporate working that has limited their reformist potential. The paper concludes by highlighting the implications for more progressive forms of social economics and the skills, finance and practices that facilitate local accumulation strategies. This study aims to understand, through the eyes of children's caregivers of institutional shelters that holds children that were separated from their mothers, how those constitute themselves psychically, thinking about the relevance of the maternal function for the baby's emotional development. Taking the caregivers perspective, we reflect about the possibilities that each child finds to handle with the deprivation of living without his/her mother and, thus, hosted in a shelter. Thus, interviews were realized with four professionals who work directly caring babies and young children that are in shelters of Porto Alegre. Were also used vignettes of a clinical case that propelled this writing. The approach made possible the understanding of several factors involved in the arduous task of becoming as a subject in the ambit of a host institution, emphasizing the possibilities that burst when we consider a space for a clinical listening. We realize, as well, that an analysis for a bond trampled on trust and reliability can be possible, but inevitably it finds itself tangled beyond the difficulties inherent in the function. This is the experience of an art therapy workshop conducted in a Day Care Center for Children of Aldeas Infantiles SOS Granada. The title, play with trick, tries to refer to the conclusion of one of the participants in the workshop, which spontaneously arrived to the conclusion of the "trick" of art therapy: which is the result of the personal reflection that has to be discovered by themselfs with implicit learning.

Se describen las desigualdades socioeconómicas en la mortalidad por secciones censales en el País Vasco y en sus tres capitales durante el período 1996-2003. Se realizó un estudio ecológico transversal de áreas pequeñas. Mediante el análisis de componentes principales se calculó un índice de privación socioeconómica. El riesgo de mortalidad de cada sección censal, y la relación entre la mortalidad y la privación socioeconómica se estudiaron mediante modelos Bayesianos jerárquicos. Los patrones geográficos del riesgo de mortalidad y del índice de privación fueron similares, con mayor mortalidad en las áreas de mayor privación. En el conjunto del País Vasco la magnitud de la asociación entre la privación y la mortalidad fue mayor en los hombres que en las mujeres. En las capitales esa asociación sólo se evidenció para los hombres. Estos resultados son útiles para orientar las políticas de salud e identificar las áreas geográficas que precisan una mayor atención. [fr] On décrit les inégalités socio-économiques dans la mortalité par sections de recensement au Pays Basque et ses trois capitales pendant la période 1996-2003. Une étude écologique transversale d’aires petites a été accomplie. Au moyen de l’analyse de composantes principales, on a calculé un index de privation socio-économique. Le risque de mortalité de chaque section, et le rapport entre la mortalité et la privation socioéconomique ont été étudiés utilisant des modèles Bayesians hiérarchiques. Les patrons géographiques du risque de mortalité et de l’index de privation étaient semblables, étant la mortalité plus grande dans les aires avec une plus grande privation. Dans l’ensemble du Pays Basque la grandeur de l’association entre la privation et la mortalité était plus grande chez les hommes que chez les femmes. Dans les capitales l’association était evidente seulement chez les hommes. Ces résultats sont utiles pour orienter les politiques de santé et pour identifier les aires géographiques qui ont besoin d’une plus grande attention.

In this article, we take as deep study object the relation between privation and ego ideal, demonstrating that the first is the push of the second; to reflection about contemporary compulsion the former is the spring of latter. This study aims to comprehend more precisely about In these experiences the symbolic object, correspondent to privation, loses value in privilege of the real object, approached by Lacan (1995a). This analysis goes from the Freud and Lacan psychoanalytics conceptions, as well as from the idea of the ideals fall that are cited by contemporary authors, such as Zizek, Miller and others. In this article we argue that the recent focus on the suburbanization of poverty is problematic because of the ambiguities and inconsistencies in defining suburbia. To improve transparency, replicability, and comparability, we suggest that research on the geographical changes to the distribution of poverty should focus on three questions: (1) How centralized is urban poverty? (2) To what extent is it decentralizing? (3) Is it becoming spatially dispersed? With respect to all three questions, the issue of quantifying uncertainty has been underresearched. The main contribution of the article is to provide a practical and robust solution to the problem of inference based on a Bayesian multivariate conditional autoregressive (CAR) model, made accessible via the R software package CARBayes. Our approach can be applied to spatiotemporally autocorrelated data and can estimate both levels of and change in global relative centralization index (RCI), local RCIs, and dissimilarity indexes. We illustrate our method with an application to Scotland's four largest cities. Our results show that poverty was centralized in 2011 in Glasgow, Dundee, and Aberdeen. Poverty in Edinburgh, however, was decentralized: Nonpoor households tend to live closer to the center than poor ones and increasingly so. We also find evidence of statistically significant reductions in centralization of poverty in all four cities. To test whether this change is associated with poverty becoming more dispersed, we estimate changes to evenness and local decentralization of poverty, revealing complex patterns of change. Urban living environments are known to influence human well-being and health. The literature on environmental equity focuses especially on the distribution of nuisances and resources, which, because of the unequal spatial distribution of different social groups, leads to an increased exposure to risks or to less access to beneficial elements for certain populations. Little work has been done on the multidimensionality of different environmental burdens and the lack of resources in some urban environments. This article has two main objectives. The first objective is to construct an environmental equity index that takes into consideration seven components of the urban environment (traffic-related pollutants, proximity to major roads and highways, vegetation, access to parks, access to supermarkets, and the urban heat island effect). The second objective is to determine whether groups vulnerable to different nuisances—namely, individuals under fifteen years old and the elderly—and those who tend to be located in the most problematic areas according to the environmental justice literature (i.e., visible minorities and low-income populations) are affected by environmental inequities associated with the application of the composite index at the city block level. The results obtained by using four statistical techniques show that, on the Island of Montreal, low-income persons and, to a lesser extent, visible minorities are more frequently located in city blocks close to major roads and with higher concentrations of NO2and less vegetation. Finally, the environmental equity index is significantly lower in areas with high concentrations of low-income populations in comparison with the wealthiest areas. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Analizando la jurisprudencia del Consejo de Estado en lo relacionado con la responsabilidad del Estado por la privación injusta de la libertad, encontramos que la Corporación ha adoptado tres clases de posiciones: La primera, que podemos considerar como subjetiva, en la que equipara esta forma de responsabilidad con el error judicial y el defectuoso funcionamiento de la administración de justicia, pues exige una conducta fallida de la administración de justicia y la presencia de una decisión judicial abiertamente contraria a derecho, como requisitos necesarios para que surja la responsabilidad patrimonial del Estado por prisión provisional injusta. La segunda, que podemos llamar objetiva, sujeta esta forma de responsabilidad, en cuanto a la conducta imputada, a que la persona que ha sido privada de la libertad y que posteriormente ha sido liberada como consecuencia de una decisión de autoridad competente, ésta haya sido fundada en alguna de las causales que contempla el Art. 414 del Decreto Ley 2700 de 1991 (anterior C.P.P), es decir, en que el hecho no ocurrió, o no le es imputable o que no constituyó conducta punible, sin necesidad de valorar la conducta del funcionario judicial y de comprobar si la misma fue errada, ilegal, arbitraria o injusta. La tercera, posición actual de la Corporación, fundamenta la responsabilidad del Estado por privación injusta de la libertad en lo reglado por el artículo 90 de la Constitución Política, esto es, que el Estado es patrimonialmente responsable por los daños antijurídicos que le sean imputables, de manera que si un sujeto es privado de la libertad en desarrollo de una investigación penal y posteriormente es liberado mediante providencia judicial en la que se resuelve desvincularlo del proceso penal, los daños que demuestre y que se deriven de la detención deben serle indemnizados, toda vez que no estaba en el deber de soportarlos.

Se hace un breve recorrido de la teoría del duelo en Freud y Lacanque permite obtener un saldo clínico unívoco de ambas teorías: elduelo deja un enigma incurable en la subjetividad. Lacan ubica al duelo en relación al objeto a y la privación;desde allí destacamos diferentes vicisitudes: pasaje al acto,movimiento donde el sujeto es arrastrado por el objeto hacia unacaída que puede terminar en suicidio; acting-out como escena escandalosa que es, al mismo tiempo, un llamado al Otro; acto comoaspecto fecundo del duelo, porque el sujeto, en esta respuesta antela privación, no se pierde tras el objeto a sino que cambia su posición subjetiva; síntoma en tanto es posible darle al objeto a cobertura de un nuevo sustituto vía el falo.

Un análisis de la matriz conceptual aristotélica, focalizado en las nociones de privación y potencia, permitiría demostrar que es posible encontrar convergencias semánticas entre tales nociones —bajo ciertos aspectos y relaciones—. Las mismas podrían proyectarse en esquemas analíticos-interpretativos plausibles de ser aplicados a hechos, fenómenos y problemas contemporáneos que, aquí, han de corresponder con un análisis de las posibles aplicaciones de estas nociones sobre el hecho social de la pobreza, según su afección sobre el individuo.
