Abstract

The effect of including corn oil (CO) in the diet of Pelibuey ewes in an embryo transfer protocol was evaluated. Twenty-four (24) donor ewes were randomly assigned to each of two groups (G), G1: twelve ewes fed a base diet (BD) with CO, and G2: twelve ewes fed BD without CO. Embryos were obtained 6.5 d after estrus and transferred to recipient ewes, forming four treatments: T1: recipient ewes fed a base diet with CO (BD+CO), transferred with embryos from a G1 donor (n=23), T2: recipient ewes fed BD without CO (BD-CO), transferred with embryos from a G1 donor (n=18), T3: recipient ewes fed BD+CO, transferred with embryos from a G2 donor (n=9), and T4: recipient ewes fed BD-CO, transferred with embryos from a G2 donor (n=11). The inclusion of CO in the diet increased (P<0.05) the ovulatory rate (10.5 ± 2.07 vs. 6.3 ± 2.07 corpora lutea), the number of transferable embryos (5.5 ± 1.4 vs 2.8 ± 1.4), quality 1 embryos (4.41 ± 1.1 vs 2.08 ± 1.1), and the number of total structures (5.9 ± 1.5 vs 3.1 ± 2.7) per donor ewe, and no differences (P>0.05) were found in the percentage of gestation (43.4, 55.5, 55.5, and 36.3 %) in the recipient ewes for any of the treatments. Including CO in the diet of Pelibuey ewes increases the superovulatory response in an embryo transfer protocol. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective: To determine the productive performance and forage consumption (Trifolium repens L.) of Mexican Creole and Sasso chickens, under two rearing systems (confinement or grazing). Design/Methodology/Approach: One-hundred twenty-eight chickens (64 Mexican Creole (MC) and 64 Sasso (S)) of 35 d of age were randomly distributed in two production systems to obtain four repetitions (eight chickens per repetition) of each of the following genotype × system combinations: Mexican Creole in grazing, Mexican Creole in confinement, Sasso in grazing, and Sasso in confinement. A completely randomized experimental design with a 2×2 factorial arrangement was used, with genotype and production system as its main factors. The following variables were evaluated: feed consumption, weight gain, and feed conversion. Additionally, forage consumption in grazing birds was determined. Results: The productive performance variables were not affected by the production system factors or by its interaction with the bird genotype. However, the genotype did influence the variables considered: the Sasso birds recorded better values (p≤0.05) than Mexican Creole specimens. Regarding forage consumption, no differences were observed (p≤0.05) between bird genotypes and, in both cases, the accumulated consumption at the 49 d of study was close to 60 g of DM. Study Limitations/Implications: It is necessary to carry out a socioeconomic study as well as a defoliation level analysis with the aim of improving the use of the resource. Abstract

Objective: To describe the factors that affect the incubation of fertile eggs of Creole hens (Gallus gallus domesticus) at Mezquital Valley, Hidalgo, Mexico. Design/Methodology/Approach: 448 eggs of Creole hens were incubated in a Casser model 7622 incubator, in which the number of infertile and fertile eggs was evaluated; within the number of fertile eggs, the number of dead embryos was determined; due to dehydration or damage caused by fungi and bacteria. From the live hatched chickens, those that died due to omphalitis were recorded. Results: 272 of 448 incubated eggs were fertile; 119 of them hatched and 153 were dead embryos. While 176 were infertile. Among the dead embryos, 84 of dehydration, 69 due to fungal and bacterial infection and 11 live hatched chicks due to omphalitis. Limitations/implications: The literature review found little information on factors affecting the hatching of fertile Creole chicken eggs in backyard flocks. Findings/conclusions: Infection by fungi and bacteria increase embryonic mortality, while omphalitis increases mortality during the first days of life of the backyard Creole chickens. High storage temperature in the nest or incubator causes embryo dehydration.

Abstract

Objective: Evaluate the productive performance of rabbits fed alfalfa- and white clover-based diets. Design/methodology/approach: Rabbits can consume high-fiber diets. Therefore, this study evaluated a white clover-based diet (Diet 1) and an alfalfa-based diet (Diet 2). The experiment was carried out during the Fall-Winter season of 2018. This study used 111 rabbits (males and females), weaned at 31 days of age. Diets were randomly assigned to 20 cages, four to six animals per cage. In total, 56 rabbits received Diet 1 and 55 Diet 2. All animals had free access to feed and water during the 35-day growth period. The weekly recorded response variables were live weight (LW), daily weight gain (DWG), and feed conversion (FC). At 67 days of age, hot carcass yield (HCY) and cold carcass yield (CCY) were determined. Results: At the end of the fattening period (31 to 66 days of age), there were no significant differences between the two experimental groups. The results for Diet 1 and 2, respectively, were the following: LW201236 and 196037 g, DWG32.21.57 and 28.41.60 g/animal, FC3.30.2 and 3.40.2 g/g, HCY48.00.5 and 48.10.5%, and CCY55.90.6 and 55.80.7%. Limitations/implications: Due to the lack of significant differences (P0.05), further studies are required to better understand these legumes. Findings/conclusions: White clover could completely replace alfalfa in rabbit diets.

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the growth, performance, and carcass characteristics as well as the individual and maternal heterosis effects of New Zealand White (NZ), California (CA) rabbits and their crosses. Design/methodology/approach: 450 offspring rabbits, from 48 females (does) mated to six stud rabbits, were evaluated, recording the weight (BLW) and litter size at birth (LSB) and weaning (LSW), as well as the weight (AWW), gain (AWG), consumption (AWC), and feed conversion (CONV) for 8 weeks post-weaning. The carcass live weight at slaughter, warm carcass weight with head, carcass yield and parts of the carcass were evaluated. Results: The assessment showed differences (P<0.05) in LSB and LSW with values of 10.47 and 9.78 kits respectively, when NZ was used as the paternal breed, results suggest individual heterosis of 5.91% for litter size and 12.44% for the weaning weight. Regarding the productive performance and carcass characteristics, the California breed showed superiority as a paternal breed, with average values of 36.11 g in AWG and 2.90 in CONV. The average individual weight at the end of the fattening, at 70 days of age, was 2.09 kg and the carcass weight was 1.16 kg. Post-weaning heterosis for the evaluated characteristics during fattening was positive and moderate. Limitations on study/implications: It is necessary to carry out genetic improvement studies, with different crossing systems and to evaluate results based on productive and reproductive performance. Findings/Conclusions: When using NZ as a paternal breed, the reproductive characteristics of the offspring were superior compared to the ones obtained from CA. Abstract

Objective Evaluate the effects of i) dehulling of lupine seed on chemical composition and apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and ii) soybean meal substitution by dehulled lupine seed in broiler diets with enzymes on productive performance, size of digestive organs and welfare-related variables. Methods Experiment 1, chemical composition and AME were determined in whole and dehulled lupine seed. Experiment 2, two hundred eighty-eight one-day-old male Ross 308 broilers were used. The experimental diets were maize-soybean meal (MS), MS with enzymes (MSE) and maize-dehulled lupine seed with enzymes (MLE). Diets were assigned to the experimental units under a completely randomized design (eight replicates per diet). The body weight (BW) gain, feed intake, feed conversion, digestive organ weights, gait score, latency to lie down and valgus/varus angulation were evaluated. Results The dehulling process increased protein (25.0% to 31.1%), AME (5.9 to 8.8 MJ/kg) and amino acid contents. The BW gain of broilers fed the MLE diet was similar (p>0.05) to that of those fed the MS diet, but lower than that of those fed the MSE diet.
