Abstract

16th International Conference on Harmonisation within Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling for Regulatory Purposes, HARMO 2014 -- 8 September 2014 through 11 September 2014 -- 112323 The Bulgarian Chemical Weather Forecast System, based on WRF-CMAQ models is applied with 9km resolution for air pollution simulations in the cross-border region Bulgaria-Turkey, known for its natural parks with rich biodiversity and tourism activities in summer. Model results are compared to observations from 5 surface stations focussing on PM10, O3, NO2 and SO2 in February and June 2014. The preliminary analysis based on evaluation of some main statistics (mean, correlation, temporal variation) reveals that the model system performs well for ozone in summer, while PM10 and NO2 concentrations are underestimated. The result indicate some of the air quality problems of the region - high ozone in summer, high SO2 values in parts of the Turkish territory in winter and high PM10 daily mean concentrations in winter. © Crown Copyright 2014 Dstl.

25. Study of the pollution exchange between Bulgaria and northern Greece

Abstract

The present work aims at a detailed study and explanation of the pollution transport in the air basin over south-western Bulgaria and northern Greece and assessment of the air pollution exchange between Bulgaria and Greece. Some well-known specific climatic air pollution effects were studied and explained. Calculations were made of the SO2 pollution of the Balkan Peninsula from both Greek and Bulgarian sources for 1995, and the country-to-country pollution budget diagrams were built. Days with extreme mean concentration for Bulgaria and northern Greece were picked out, and some further specification of the contribution of the different sources in both the countries to these cases of extreme pollution was made. Some preliminary studies of possible mesoscale effects on the pollution exchange between Bulgaria and northern Greece were carried out. A three-layer pollution transport model with a more complex chemistry block was introduced, and some preliminary simulations of the transport of sulfur and nitrogen compounds were performed.

Abstract

The paper presents a work, which aims at numerical study of the wind and solar energy potential of the country. The wind/solar energy fields simulations were performed applying the 5th generation PSU/NCAR Meso- Meteorological Model MM5 for years 2000-2007 with a spatial resolution of 3 km over Bulgaria. The computer simulated data base is large and rather comprehensive. In this sense it can be considered as statistically significant ensemble. This allows statistical treatment in order various wind and solar energy potential evaluations to be retrieved from the data base. Abstract

The new energy efficiency politics of the EU requires till year 2020 16% of Bulgarian electricity to be produced from renewable sources. The wind is one of renewable energy sources. The ecological benefits of all the kinds of "green" energy are obvious. It is desirable, however, the utilization of renewable energy sources to be as much as possible economically effective. This means that installment of the respective devices (wind farms, solar farms, etc.) should be based on a detailed and reliable evaluation of the real potential of the country. Detailed study of the wind energy potential of the country - spatial distribution, temporal variation, mean and extreme values, fluctuations and statistical characteristics; evaluation from a point of view of industrial applicability can not be made only on the basis of the existing routine meteorological data - the measuring network is not dense enough to catch all the details of the local flow systems, hence of the real wind energy potential of the country spatial distribution. That is why the measurement data has to be supplemented by numerical modeling. Abstract

An operational prototype of the Integrated Bulgarian Chemical Weather Forecasting and Information System is presented. This version of the system is limited to relatively low resolution (10 km) but covers all Bulgaria. It is based on the US EPA Models-3 System (MM5, SMOKE and CMAQ). The meteorological input to the system is the Bulgarian operational numerical weather forecast. The boundary conditions are taken from analogous Greek system (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki). Bulgarian system runs automatically twice a day (00 and 12 UTC) and produces 48-hour forecast. The part of the results of each System's run is post-processed in a way to be visualized and uploaded to a respective web site. Abstract

The present work aims at studying the local to regional atmospheric pollution transport and transformation processes over the Balkan Peninsula and at tracking and characterizing the main pathways and processes that lead to atmospheric composition formation in the region. The US EPA Models-3 system is chosen as a modelling tool. As the NCEP Global Analysis Data with 1 degree resolution is used as meteorological background, the MM5 and CMAQ nesting capabilities are applied for downscaling the simulations to a 9 km resolution over Balkans and 3 km over Bulgaria. The TNO emission inventory is used as emission input. Special pre-processing procedures are created for introducing temporal profiles and speciation of the emissions. The study is based on a large number of numerical simulations carried out for the summer period for two emission scenarios-with all the emissions and with biogenic emissions excluded. Some results from both emission scenarios which make it possible to evaluate the contribution of biogenic emissions in many different terms-spatial pattern, averaged over Bulgaria, typical and extreme impacts are demonstrated in the paper. Abstract

Here we presents results of an experimental campaign performed in October 2016 in Ahtopol (Bulgaria) in the context of Exchange program between ISAC-CNR and NIHM-BAS research centers. The aim of the campaign is to collect aerosols in the coastal area, together with physical parameters; to consider air-masses circulation from meteorological output and to demonstrate that for some period Ahtopol and Lamezia Terme sites are in the same system. Evidence of aerosols circulation is also given by using HYSPLIT model for a better understanding of pollution sources also by chemical analysis form wet and dry deposition and filters from impactor.

Abstract

Coastal meteorology is characterised with complex physical and chemical processes related to aerosols exchange and transport. Aerosol measurements in Bulgaria are rare in areas outside big cities which makes extremely valuable the 3-year effort of a bilateral project between BAS and CNR to perform experimental campaigns at a rural Black Sea coastal site. Not only the concentration of different fractions of PM, but also the chemical composition of aerosols was studied during three short experimental studies in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Abstract: In this paper we investigate the results of multi-model simulations performed on the ETEX-2 experiment by the ENSEMBLE modelling community. New sets of results were created by taking different percentiles of the distribution of the models'' predicted values. Both single models and the new constructed sets of results have been compared with the observed data. While a similar comparison for the ETEX-1 case indicated the median model was superior to any single model, for the ETEX-2 case, the situation is more difficult due to complex meteorological conditions, and no absolute and clear conclusions can be obtained. However, for emergency response purposes the median model still can be considered the most viable option also for complicated meteorological situation such is the ETEX-2 experiment. Abstract

Background and Aims: The adhesion molecule expression in colonic mucosa is pivotal for transition from quiescent to active stage of ulcerative colitis (UC). The aim of the present study is to reveal the adhesion molecule profile of colonic mucosa in the active stage of UC and in remission., Materials and Methods: Biopsy specimens obtained from 14 patients with UC (seven with active disease and seven with UC in remission) and from seven controls were used. Immunohistochemistry was performed with antibodies against ICAM-1, VCAM-1, E-selectin, LFA-1, Mac-1, and VLA-4., Results: In controls, slight ICAM-1 positivity was observed on thety endothelium of blood vessels of the mucosal and submucosal layer and only single ICAM-1-, Mac-1-, and LFA-1-positive cells were found. In all patients with UC, the endothelium of venules in the edematous mucosal and submucosal layers was ICAM-1-, VCAM-1-, and E-selectin-positive. Numerous ICAM-1- and LFA-1-positive and less VCAM-1-, Mac-1-, and VLA-4-positive inflammatory cells were detected in mucous layers of acute UC. In specimens of UC in remission, the inflammatory cells positive for the studied adhesion molecules were significantly less in number in the mucosa and submucosa (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: Based on the increased expression of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and their ligands LFA-1 and VLA-4 in patients with UC, we can conclude that these adhesion molecules play a key role in the adherence of lymphocytes and macrophages to endothelial cells maintaining the chronic inflammation. Presence of E-selectin on endothelial cells of venules could be a sign of relapse after remission in UC.

Abstract

The EMAP model (Eulerian Model for Air Pollution) is applied for calculating the sulfur concentration and deposition fields for 1995 as based upon Bulgarian and Greek sources. The country-to-country budgets show that about 4% of the sulfur oxides emitted by Bulgaria are deposited over Greek territory, estimated at 28 kt S. Only 2% of sulfur compounds emitted by Greece are deposited over Bulgaria, estimated at 6.2 kt S for 1995. This data is in agreement with EMEP/MSC-W estimates and provides more details concerning time and space. The results can be used in decision-making, negotiating and the development of contamination strategies.
