We have almost completed one year since the merger of NAIFA, the Society of FSP, and Life Happens, and we hope new readers to the Journal of Financial Service Professionals have found the articles and columns that were published to be beneficial to their practice and professional development. For many years now, the Editor's View column in the November issue of this Journal has highlighted the content we sponsored by providing a year-end review. By examining this column (and those November columns from prior years), we hope our expanded audience can easily locate important information that will enhance their careers and their clients' well-being. This study explores how local managers, in practicing Human Resource management (HRM), may pursue their own interests that are out of line with the agendas of headquarters in multinational companies (MNCs). It is widely acknowledged that informal networks have an impact on HRM practices in emerging markets. While these networks are often regarded as beneficial for organizations in compensating for institutional shortfalls, they may also lead to corruption, nepotism, or other ethical transgressions. Indigenous scholarship on informal networks in emerging markets has highlighted how their impact occurs through a dynamic process; powerful placeholders deploy informal networks to entrench existing power and authority relations when managing people. Qualitative data were gathered through 43 in‐depth interviews and documentary evidence from MNCs operating in Jordan. MNCs are subject to both home and host country effects; we highlight how, in practicing HRM, country of domicile managers deploy the cultural scripts of wasta informal network to secure and enhance their own relative authority. HRM practices are repurposed by actors who secure and consolidate their power through wasta. They dispense patronage to insiders and marginalize outsiders; the latter includes not only more vulnerable local employees but also expatriates. This phenomenon becomes particularly evident during the performance appraisal process, which may serve as a basis for the differential treatment and rewards of employees. Consequently, this further dilutes the capacity of MNCs to implement—as adverse to espousing—centrally decided approaches to HRM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With heightened uncertainties and risks in the fluctuating business environment, existing studies have concentrated on elucidating how service organizations leverage human resource practices to adapt to and survive such unforeseen and disruptive threats. However, how such practices could serve the strategic objective of cultivating a sustainably thriving workforce across different situations is not well understood. Thriving is a core transitional state that fosters positive behaviors, such as creative customer‐related problem‐solving. Applying social information processing theory, we propose and test a model by exploring how organizations that engage in thriving‐oriented human resource management (HRM) encourage employees to take responsibility and promote constructive change, thereby activating their creative problem‐solving behaviors. Specifically, we theorize and develop measures to promote thriving‐oriented HRM in Study 1. In Study 2, we collected multisource and multi‐wave data from 296 frontline service employees and 45 supervisors in China. Our findings reveal that thriving‐oriented HRM is positively related to felt responsibility for change, which ultimately encourages creative problem‐solving. We also show that the threat imposed by a crisis, that is, the COVID‐19 pandemic, strengthens the positive relationship between thriving‐oriented HRM and felt responsibility for change. Our study contributes to the HRM literature, especially on thriving‐oriented HRM and employee perception, and has practical implications for service organizations in the uncertain context. Case conceptualization is an important stage in the sport and performance psychology (SPP) consulting process. The conceptualization of a case can influence a consultant's understanding of the underpinning mechanisms contributing to a presenting concern, interventions selected to help a client, and the effectiveness of provided services. Guidelines for case conceptualization have been developed for SPP professionals, but little is known about how this activity is undertaken in practice. The purpose of this study was to investigate the case-conceptualization methods and approaches of certified SPP professionals. Fifty-two certified mental performance consultants completed an online qualitative survey exploring how they conceptualized cases. Our findings suggested that SPP consultants viewed case conceptualization as an ongoing process, something that helps a consultant understand a client's presenting concerns and guide any intervention plans, a collaboration between client and consultant, and a way to evaluate the effectiveness of their practice. Physical activity improves the well-being of persons living with dementia but few exercise programs include them. The Dementia-Inclusive Choices for Exercise (DICE) toolkit aims to improve exercise providers' understanding of dementia and ability to support persons living with dementia in physical activity. We evaluated the co-designed DICE toolkit with exercise providers using a mixed-methods approach comprising pre/post questionnaires and interviews and reflection diaries. Among 16 participants, self-efficacy for exercise delivery to persons living with dementia and both knowledge and attitudes toward dementia significantly improved. Thematic analysis suggested participants (a) had a deeper understanding of the variability of dementia, (b) were planning for equitable access for persons living with dementia, (c) planned to promote social connection through exercise, and (d) were optimistic for future engagement with persons living with dementia. The DICE toolkit may improve exercise providers' knowledge and confidence to plan proactively to support persons living with dementia in programs and services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drawing on an in-depth study of physicians facing the Covid-19 pandemic in Italy in 2020, we advance theory on how professionals in their workplace respond to knowledge disruptions associated with complex societal challenges that undermine the adequacy of their knowledge base to solve professional problems. We show that, in the context of uncertainty generated by the knowledge disruption and the inability to mitigate this uncertainty through typical knowledge-based strategies, professionals experience a trail of negative epistemic emotions. Despite these negative epistemic emotions, and motivated by a heightened sense of moral duty, professionals engage in service-oriented practices of collegial and humanistic work that depart from the knowledge-centric practices of their usual work. We detail how the repeated development of positive moral emotions when performing such practices leads professionals to ultimately consolidate and embed service-oriented practices in their professional work. Our study contributes to the literature on professions and organizations by theorizing the distinctive category of knowledge disruptions of unmitigable uncertainty and by uncovering the microlevel dynamics and mechanisms that sustain professionals' responses. The aim of this study was to investigate expert practitioners' approaches to conducting a first sport psychology session with individual clients as there is sparse empirical literature on this topic. Nine expert Certified Mental Performance Consultants completed a semistructured interview where they discussed experiences conducting a first meeting with an athlete. Primary objectives included establishing the relationship, setting guidelines and expectations, understanding the client's background, identifying presenting concerns, and formulating the treatment plan and building skills. Building rapport was an aspect used to establish the relationship while discussing confidentiality was utilized to set guidelines. Important strategies employed to increase the perceived benefits to services included conveying the consulting approach and philosophy. Lessons learned centered around doing too much and not appreciating individual differences of clients. Findings show expert consultants aim to achieve similar broad objectives in the first session and provide a basis for best practices in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined how psychologists working in men's English football academies evaluate their working context when choosing a professional practice framework for guiding applied psychology provisions. Sixteen psychologists—six women and 10 men—participated in two semistructured interviews. A stepwise inductive–deductive approach in the analysis was used. The authors found that 13 of the psychologists adopted humanistic psychology as their guiding framework. In exploring the reasoning, three categories were developed: (a) motives for choosing a humanistic approach, (b) challenges when applying a humanistic approach, and (c) perpetuating stigma and restrictive assumptions regarding sport psychology. The study shows that humanistic psychology might be an effective approach to countering some dehumanizing features in the current English academy context (e.g., an overreliance on metrics). However, the Premier League, the Football Association, and other governing football organizations should notice the drawbacks of how psychologists sometimes must collude with the current system to establish psychology in the academy before later expanding provisions. Background: Asthma is a common chronic respiratory inflammatory disease that adversely affects patients' quality of life (QoL) and overall well-being. When asthma is not adequately controlled, there is a higher risk of exacerbations and hospitalizations, thereby increasing the direct and indirect costs associated with the treatment and productivity loss. Overreliance on SABA and underutilization of ICS in the management of asthma can result in suboptimal treatment and poor asthma control. Patients who visit the emergency department are more likely to have poorly controlled asthma. Ensuring that these patients are provided with an evidence-based treatment plan during discharge can help reduce the risk of future exacerbations and consequently reduce the burden on the UAE healthcare system. Methods: A joint task force comprising experts from the Emirates Society of Emergency Medicine (ESEM) and Emirates Thoracic Society (ETS) reviewed published evidence and updated guidelines in asthma management to optimize the post-discharge recommendations. Results: The ESEM-ETS experts' joint task force has developed a step-by-step plan for emergency department/hospital discharge, which is based on the GINA 2023 guideline recommendations and the medications available in the UAE. By adhering to this structured plan, emergency department physicians can play a crucial role in improving asthma care, long-term patient outcomes, and the utilization of healthcare resources. Conclusions: Prioritizing patient education and ensuring patients are equipped with the best-suited asthma treatment plans prior to discharge can help ED physicians improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare resource utilization in UAE hospitals. The Wound Care Association UK (WCAUK) is committed to supporting both the accurate and consistent delivery and reporting of pressure ulcers/injuries based on the best available research and evidence. It is known that strategic and clinical guidance to support the delivery of evidence-based care does have a significant impact. Recent proposals to change pressure ulcer categorisation led the WCAUK to undertake a questionnaire survey of its members. This article outlines the importance of evidence-based guidance on the categorisation and assessment of pressure ulcer, highlighted by the responses to published changes to pressure ulcer categorisation for nurses in England, and presents the results of the survey. The article concludes that, although the discipline of tissue viability is constantly developing, the changes must be based on evidence, and clinicians must be supported strategically and practically to implement any proposed changes. Since publication of the new guidance the document has become the subject of further discussion, following concerns raised by tissue viability nurse specialists with strategic responsibility for change, as well as generalists who are expected to implement the changes. Objective: Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing healthcare, but less is known about how it may facilitate methodological innovations in research settings. In this manuscript, we describe a novel use of AI in summarizing and reporting qualitative data generated from an expert panel discussion about the role of electronic health records (EHRs) in implementation science. Materials and methods: 15 implementation scientists participated in an hour-long expert panel discussion addressing how EHRs can support implementation strategies, measure implementation outcomes, and influence implementation science. Notes from the discussion were synthesized by ChatGPT (a large language model—LLM) to generate a manuscript summarizing the discussion, which was later revised by participants. We also surveyed participants on their experience with the process. Results: Panelists identified implementation strategies and outcome measures that can be readily supported by EHRs and noted that implementation science will need to evolve to assess future EHR advancements. The ChatGPT-generated summary of the panel discussion was generally regarded as an efficient means to offer a high-level overview of the discussion, although participants felt it lacked nuance and context. Extensive editing was required to contextualize the LLM-generated text and situate it in relevant literature. Discussion and conclusions: Our qualitative findings highlight the central role EHRs can play in supporting implementation science, which may require additional informatics and implementation expertise and a different way to think about the combined fields. Background: Shamanism is a spiritual tradition in which trance practitioners deliberately modify their state of consciousness to seemingly interact with an invisible world to resolve their community members' problems. This review aims to provide a multidisciplinary overview of scientific research on shamanic trance. Methods: The search was performed using PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Twenty-seven articles were found to be eligible, and their data were classified into four dimensions, namely, a) phenomenology, b) psychology, c) neuro-physiological functions, and d) clinical applications. Results: These studies suggest that these trances are non-pathological, different from normal states of consciousness in terms of phenomenology and neurophysiology, and influenced by multiple personal and environmental variables. Furthermore, while trances may offer therapeutic potential, their scope should be approached cautiously, underscoring the need for rigorous studies to assess the effectiveness of shamanic approaches for complementary therapies. Conclusion: Overall, shamanic trance and its potential benefits remain an intriguing and multifaceted area of scientific study, offering insights into the intersections of consciousness, spirituality, and possibly therapy. Professional practice in health and social care is embodied by the practitioners concerned, embedded in practice contexts and creative in nature. It is therefore complex to investigate, understand and develop. Current health and social care contexts can present practitioners with increasingly constraining circumstances and spaces that can feel closed instead of open to exploration and development of practice. The collaborative, critical and creative inquiry methodology presented here was developed among nurses practising in such challenging circumstances. It enables nurses and other health and social care practitioners to reveal, explore and develop their embodied practices, systematically and collaboratively, amid busy daily practice situations. However ‘small’ the space they are in, the process described here can help practitioners to enlarge their space for becoming. The iterative cycle and the use of participatory arts help illuminate otherwise hidden and difficult to articulate aspects of practice, enable the involvement of stakeholders in coming to new understandings and lead to an expanded view of professional practice and its potential for transformation. The purpose of this paper is threefold. First, to present the methodology, methods and lessons learned during the doctoral study in which this approach was developed. Second, to reveal the professional artistry of facilitating this space for becoming and of supporting professionals to reveal their own and others’ professional artistry. This mixed-methods study explores the incidence, manifestations, and drivers of secondary traumatic stress among service providers who work with Syrian refugees in Istanbul, Turkey. A survey of 104 social workers and other providers working in 17 public and civil society agencies in Istanbul in 2018 demonstrates that 54.81% had Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale scores indicating mild to severe secondary traumatic stress. In total, 28 qualitative interviews showed manifestations and possible drivers of secondary traumatic stress including weak supervision, heavy caseloads, and insecure working conditions. The findings suggest supervision and peer-support should be strengthened to address secondary traumatic stress among providers serving refugees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reflects upon an international collaboration between supervision experts from South Africa, Hong Kong and New Zealand with the Singapore Association of Social Workers. This collaboration was focused on developing the supervision of supervisory practice. An overview of social work supervision in Singapore is discussed, followed by the process of developing the programme content, delivering training and providing consultation on creating a curriculum. The outcomes include supervision guidelines, curriculum development and further cross-national collaborations. The article concludes by discussing the learning from this international collaboration. The 2016 Alberta wildfires resulted in widespread destruction of property and displacement of residents. Research aimed to identify the roles and responsibilities of social work practitioners and human service professionals in long-term disaster recovery. This article presents the findings from interviews, focus groups, and a survey with a total of 140 participants in Alberta, Canada. Implications for disaster social work planning, and response and recovery efforts in Canada and internationally, will inform the development of programs and policies to support and make visible the contribution of social workers and human service professionals in long-term disaster recovery. Eradicating poverty is a fundamental objective of social work, both at local and at global levels. After COVID-19, the United Nations Commission for Social Development and Sustainable Development Goals, the global agenda developed by the International Association of Schools of Social Work, the International Council on Social Welfare and the International Federation of Social Workers have placed the fight against poverty and the role of decent work at the forefront of the public agenda. The article discusses the specialty of geriatric medicine that extends well beyond single medical conditions and calls for interdisciplinary team care. Topics covered include medical students' low interest in the specialty and maintenance of specialty certification, and healthcare advances in the field as of 2024. Also noted are recommendations for renewed interest in the specialty like practitioners' need to lay claim to their clinical domain, and the improvement of fellowship training.

Simple Summary: Patients with advanced stages of breast cancer are at high risk of the cancer metastasizing or spreading to areas of the central nervous system, including the brain, cerebrospinal fluid, and the protective tissue layers of the brain, termed leptomeninges. Although guidelines recommend screening for central nervous system disease in other cancers, such as non-small cell lung cancer, there are no such recommendations for patients with breast cancer unless they have symptoms such as headaches, weakness, or vomiting. This review discusses the evidence behind screening for breast cancer that has spread to the central nervous system, as well as new methods of diagnosis, including specialized imaging, serum testing, and cerebrospinal fluid analysis. Brain and leptomeningeal metastases are complications of breast cancer with high rates of morbidity and mortality and have an estimated incidence of up to 30%. While National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines recommend screening for central nervous system metastasis in other neurotropic cancers such as non-small cell lung cancer, there are no such recommendations for asymptomatic breast cancer patients at any stage of disease. This review highlights ongoing studies into screening and diagnostics for breast cancer with brain and leptomeningeal metastasis (BCBLM) as they relate to patient outcomes and prognostication. These include imaging methods such as MRI with novel contrast agents with or without PET/CT, as well as 'liquid biopsy' testing of the cerebrospinal fluid and serum to analyze circulating tumor cells, genomic material, proteins, and metabolites. Given recent advances in radiation, neurosurgery, and systemic treatments for BCBLM, screening for CNS involvement should be considered in patients with advanced breast cancer as it may impact treatment decisions and overall survival. Clinicians, researchers, regulators, and other decision-makers increasingly rely on evidence from real-world data (RWD), including data routinely accumulating in health and administrative databases. RWD studies often rely on algorithms to operationalize variable definitions. An algorithm is a combination of codes or concepts used to identify persons with a specific health condition or characteristic. Establishing the validity of algorithms is a prerequisite for generating valid study findings that can ultimately inform evidence-based health care. In this paper, we aim to systematize terminology, methods, and practical considerations relevant to the conduct of validation studies of RWD-based algorithms. We discuss measures of algorithm accuracy, gold/reference standards, study size, prioritization of accuracy measures, algorithm portability, and implications for interpretation. Information bias is common in epidemiologic studies, underscoring the importance of transparency in decisions regarding choice and prioritizing measures of algorithm validity. The validity of an algorithm should be judged in the context of a data source, and one size does not fit all. Prioritizing validity measures within a given data source depends on the role of a given variable in the analysis (eligibility criterion, exposure, outcome, or covariate). Purpose: The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that health professionals develop and implement "adherence counselling toolkits" to promote adherence to long-term therapies in people with chronic conditions. This prospectively registered review aimed to systematically identify and evaluate existing toolkits developed to promote adherence to physical activity in people with chronic conditions. Materials and methods: Grey literature and six e-databases were searched for studies investigating the use of "toolkits" to promote adherence to physical activity or exercise recommendations in people with chronic conditions (Medline, PsycInfo, EmCare, Cochrane, CINAHL Plus, Pedro). A two-stage screening process was completed by two independent reviewers. Results: Five studies describing five toolkits were included. Three toolkits displayed all WHO recommended features, including information on adherence, a clinically useful way of using this information, and behavioural tools for maintaining habits. The included toolkits featured "adherence" to the intervention; however, this was not their primary aim. There were trends towards improved physical activity with some of the included toolkits. Conclusions: There are a lack of rigorously developed toolkits that focus on adherence to physical activity in people with chronic conditions. Toolkits should be developed, tested, and implemented to improve adherence and outcomes for people with chronic conditions. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: Health outcomes for people with chronic conditions may be enhanced with a focus on adherence, however there are currently no rigorously developed toolkits that meet this need. Adherence counselling toolkits should be co-designed with stakeholders for use with people with specific chronic conditions. Adherence-focused toolkits should be developed, implemented, and evaluated to ensure they are feasible to use and beneficial for health professionals working with people with chronic conditions. Nature‐based solutions (NbS, and related concepts like natural infrastructure, Ecosystem‐based Adaptation, and green infrastructure) are increasingly recognized as multi‐benefit strategies for addressing the critical sustainability challenges of the Anthropocene, including the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis. Mainstreaming NbS in professional practice requires strategic, landscape‐level planning integrating multiple sources of benefits and their synergies and trade‐offs. Levee setbacks (LS) are among the best‐studied riverine NbS with recognized benefits for flood risk management, drought resilience, water quality management, recreational opportunities, and ecological restoration for biodiversity. Although awareness of the multifarious benefits of LS as forms of Natural Capital is growing, implementation remains ad‐hoc and opportunistic. To address this critical implementation gap for one major example of NbS, we review and synthesize literature across diverse disciplines to provide an overview of the primary social, economic, and ecological mechanisms that affect the co‐benefit delivery of LS projects. Next, to make this information relevant to NbS practitioners, we link these mechanisms to spatial metrics that can be used to approximate the relative magnitude of project benefits and costs across these mechanisms. Finally, we highlight examples of key synergies and trade‐offs among benefits that should be considered for LS planning. This synthetic approach is intended to familiarize readers with the diverse potential benefits of LS, and provide an understanding of how to select and prioritize potential sites for further study and implementation. Objectives: Musicians who wear hearing aids are a unique subset of hearing-impaired individuals. There are a number of issues musicians experience with hearing aids, making effective hearing rehabilitation a challenge. Research suggests hearing aid satisfaction in musicians is lower partly due to their advanced listening skills, however, qualitative research addressing musicians who wear hearing aids for music is scarce. The current study aimed to record the barriers encountered by musicians who wear hearing aids when playing their instrument/singing, listening to recorded music and listening to live music. Design: Professional musicians who wear hearing aids were interviewed. Participants were questioned about their experiences with hearing loss and hearing aids, with particular emphasis on experiences listening to recorded and live music, and playing or performing music with the hearing aids. Study Sample: Eight professional musicians were interviewed, using a semi-structured interview style, with a question and prompt guide. Results: Thematic analysis revealed three main themes in the data: the musicians' journey, communication, and flexibility/adjustability. Conclusions: The results have implications for future research into specific fitting parameters for hearing aids for musicians (particularly for music performance), the need for evidence-based rehabilitation programs for musicians with hearing loss, and the need for a glossary of terms to assist communication between Audiologists and musicians. Summary: This article reports on research exploring the perspectives of Australian social work and human service professionals about environmental practice. An online survey consisting of quantitative and qualitative questions was conducted, recruiting 303 participants from the human services sector. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively using SPSS and qualitative data analyzed thematically using NVivo. Findings: Overall, results indicated that participants strongly supported an environmental focus in human services at personal and professional levels of practice. However, while participants expressed values supporting environmental practice, its implementation was less frequently reported. The adverse impacts of climate change were reported as strongly impacting the well-being of service users, and a general lack of support from employing organizations to facilitate environmental practice was evident. Despite a strong belief in the value of Australian First Nations knowledges, limited engagement with Australian First Nations peoples was practiced. Applications: Implications suggest the need to examine the practical realities of environmental practice including the disconnect between values and action. Given that participants reported adverse impacts of climate change on people and communities, but faced significant challenges implementing environmental action, the need to disrupt barriers caused by the dominant neoliberal discourse is critical. Likewise, disrupting the prevailing colonialist discourse by working alongside First Nations peoples to decolonize society and the profession is essential for enacting principles of environmental sustainability. Summary: An emerging field of research seeks to understand the experiences of non-offending adults who experience sexual attraction towards children. Research indicates that this largely hidden population can experience significant mental ill health and suicidal ideation, yet are reluctant to seek professional mental health support. Furthermore, mental ill health has been identified as a factor that can increase the likelihood of offending. This study, undertaken by a social work practitioner researcher, aimed to assist in understanding suicidality factors within this population, and to identify how statutory mental health services could be developed for this client group, thus contributing to child protection and suicide prevention agendas. A qualitative analysis was undertaken of data gathered from an online forum used by adults who have sexual attraction towards children, and are committed to non-offending. The data related to forum members' experiences of suicidality, and key themes were identified through thematic analysis. Findings: The study found that a pattern of suicidal ideation commonly appears to manifest and identified risk and protective factors that can influence suicidality. The benefits of peer support and the strengths and limitations of professional support were also identified. Applications: The findings from this study contribute to an improved understanding of this client group for mental health practitioners. The findings also lay the foundation for further investigations, to inform the development of mental health services to facilitate improved outcomes for this client group, and for child protection. Purpose: In simulation-based education (SBE), educators integrate their professional experiences to prepare learners for real world practice and may embed unproductive stereotypical biases. Although learning culture influences educational practices, the interactions between professional culture and SBE remain less clear. This study explores how professional learning culture informs simulation practices in healthcare, law, teacher training and paramedicine. Methods: Using constructivist grounded theory, we interviewed 19 educators about their experiences in designing and delivering simulation-based communication training. Data collection and analysis occurred iteratively via constant comparison, memo-writing and reflexive analytical discussions to identify themes and explore their relationships. Results: Varied conceptualizations and enactments of SBE contributed to distinct professional learning cultures. We identified a unique 'simulation culture' in each profession, which reflected a hyper-real representation of professional practice shaped by three interrelated elements: purpose and rationale for SBE, professional values and beliefs, and educational customs and techniques. Dynamic simulation cultures created tensions that may help or hinder learning for later interprofessional practice. Conclusion: The concept of simulation culture enhances our understanding of SBE. Simulation educators must be mindful of their uni-professional learning culture and its impacts. Access to medical and supportive care services is important for the health and quality of life of cancer survivors; however, services are not always available or accessible to all survivors equally. This study aims to explore the experiences of cancer services among cancer survivors in urban and rural settings to inform social work practice. Authors conducted interviews with 25 cancer survivors (colorectal, n = 13; hematological, n = 12) in the West of Ireland, using a narrative inquiry approach. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Authors found variations in the availability of supportive care services for urban and rural cancer survivors. Often, services designed to maximize survivors' individualized choices and needs in community care were limited in rural communities, preventing some survivors from having their physical and psychological needs met. Additionally, access to services proved to be a barrier for rural cancer survivors. Rural survivors stated that traveling to appointments required time and planning, and the implications of travel costs were an increased burden. When rural survivors had good social support, access to services became less of an issue. This series of six articles is inspired by themes arising from the Royal College of Midwives' state of midwifery education report. The series explores the current landscape and challenges in educating the future midwifery workforce, particularly those that relate to the higher education workforce. This penultimate article examines the interplay between the practice and academic environments and the impact this has on both students and staff alike, particularly in the wake of changing standards for student supervision. The article explores whether the nature of being an educator in a health field such as midwifery is unique because of the need to support students through placement challenges when there are limitations on what higher education institutions can realistically influence. BACKGROUND: The school climate concept has been promising, but has long‐standing critiques that have not been adequately addressed to date. The School as a Protective Factor approach represents one attempt to offer a new approach that builds on and extends beyond the concept of school climate while addressing previously identified limitations. CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEORY: The School as a Protective Factor approach offers a new framework for conceptualizing, measuring, and establishing protective school social and learning environments that co‐promote academic achievement and student health in schools, especially student mental health and substance use/abuse prevention. This new framework includes clear definitions, explicit goals, firmly established constructs, validated measures, and an intentionally parsimonious approach that prioritizes the implementation of well‐established, high‐impact constructs. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR SCHOOL HEALTH POLICY, PRACTICE, AND EQUITY: The School as a Protective Factor approach presents a simple, easy‐to‐use means of ensuring a school social environment that meets the developmental, academic, and health needs of all children and adolescents while maximizing protection across a range of desired outcomes. Perhaps most importantly, it does so in a manner that is manageable and easily integrated into every aspect of schooling, resonates with the practical experience of school personnel, and includes brief, effective, and free measurement tools. Because repeated incidents of police violence against unarmed Black people are increasingly visible, as a result of technological advances, there is growing need to understand their potentially traumatic mental health effects for other Black people. This narrative review provides an overview of critical race theory, the stress, appraisal, and coping theory, trauma theory, racial trauma theory, and emotional contagion theory to develop an integrated conceptual framework for understanding and explaining psychosocial processes by which exposure to police violence against unarmed Black people affect the mental health of other Black people at individual and community-levels. Black and Blue, a new conceptual framework, adds to the social science literature on police violence in historically marginalized communities. The conceptualization of this framework suggests implications for practice, policy, and research about police violence and trauma exposure in Black communities. A growing body of literature uses the concept of core components to better understand small-scale programmatic interventions. Instead of interventions being viewed as unitary "black boxes," interventions are viewed as configurations of core components, which are the parts of interventions that carry their causal potential and therefore need to be reproduced with fidelity to produce the intended effect. To date, the concept of core components has not been as widely applied to public health policy interventions as it has to programmatic interventions. The purpose of this topical review is to familiarize public health practitioners and policy makers with the concept of core components as applied to public health policy interventions. Raising the profile of core component thinking can foster mindful adaptation and implementation of public health policy interventions while encouraging further research to enhance the supporting evidence base. We present 3 types of multilevel interactions in which the core components of a public health policy intervention produce effects at the population level by (1) seeking to directly affect individual behavior, (2) facilitating adoption of programmatic interventions by intermediaries, and (3) encouraging intermediaries to take action that can shape changes in upstream drivers of population health. Changing the unit of analysis from whole policies to core components can provide a basis for understanding how policies work and for facilitating novel evidence-generating strategies and rapid evidence reviews that can inform future adaptation efforts. This study explored how speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in Jordan perceived and implemented telepractice at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, from April to June 2020. Eighty-five SLPs who provided telepractice and 57 SLPs, who did not, completed an online survey sharing their perceptions related to the delivery and barriers of telepractice. The results showed a significant increase of telepractice use in response to the pandemic. However, the SLPs identified several barriers to telepractice, including environmental distractions at the client's end, limited computer knowledge, technological issues, internet connectivity problems, and platform availability. There was general agreement among the SLPs regarding the need for professional training and governmental guidelines to regulate the use of telepractice. The study's findings demonstrate how SLPs in Jordan adapted to the sudden shift toward telepractice, and identify potential implementation obstacles, which could assist in establishing telepractice as a reliable model for speech-language therapy services in the future. This article examines the impact of emotions on the professional realities and practices of Burkinabè reporters working in conflict-ridden regions of Burkina Faso. To achieve this, it adopts an innovative theoretical perspective that links the emotional turn in journalism to the sociology of risk. Using an original "fieldwork in delegation" methodology involving three focus groups and 37 interviews with Burkinabè journalists, the study closely investigates the specific realities of these volatile areas. The results highlight four main forms of professional adjustment that are emerging in the current context of crisis: (1) individual adjustments - to secure both physical and mental security, (2) professional adjustments - to secure working and employment conditions, (3) media adjustments - to secure the practical and economic functioning of the media companies; and (4) values adjustments - to reflect the core values underpinning the profession in conflict-situation. The article demonstrates that the Burkinabè journalists' current attempt to manage risk and emotion is rooted in their traditional role, but also in the new responsibilities they wish to assume in the current security context. This innovative and significant research provides a useful foundation for reflection for those interested in the experiences of local journalists operating in other global conflict zones. Me and my family is a knowledge-based motivational program that includes eight weekly therapeutic sessions provided via the social services for families in which parent(s) have substance use problems (SUP). Purpose: The aim of this study was to report experiences gained while conducting the research project, in which social workers' active participation was a core feature. Materials and method: Guided by the implementation framework AIF (Active Implementation Framework) data were collected from multiple sources, such as minutes from guidance sessions, meetings with managers, booster days, and transcriptions of focus group interviews with social workers. Results: Findings indicate that social workers need to receive training in research activities before program start and to have time for pre- and post-therapeutic session reflections To deliver and maintain an intervention like Me & my Family require cross-sectional cooperation and staff having academic degrees to develop reflections on program delivery. Research design experiences indicate that RCT methods proved difficult to accomplish. An additional finding was organizational structures in silos as a barrier to recruiting families. Conclusion: Involving social workers in doing research on practices concern needs for managerial support regarding scheduling, routines and interest in evidence-based practice, well-educated social workers, and special attention to research design in relation to clients' needs. The healthcare sector is ubiquitously plagued by workforce shortages in economies around the globe. The fragility of this structural shortage becomes apparent when external shocks, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, exacerbate the lack of workers in clinical practice. In this article, we summarize current trends in healthcare workforce development across the globe, review theoretical concepts of workforce shortages, and discuss policies to address them. In practice, developed countries often address workforce shortages with targeted migration policies. However, targeted workforce migration policies only intensify workforce shortages in low-and middle-income countries. Theoretical macroeconomic models suggest that supply shortages may result from too low wages, supply lagging behind demand, and social perception. Changes in the wage rate cannot sufficiently increase the supply of health professionals as scholars find inelastic wages for physicians and nurses. Nonpecuniary factors such as working conditions, job satisfaction, and intrinsic motivation are at least equally important as financial incentives. In conclusion, increased wages can only be part of a heterogeneous policy plan to address shortages. Migration and retirement levels of health professionals can temporarily mitigate workforce shortages but rarely change the underlying systemic issues. Increasing the number of places available in medical and nursing schools while also improving, both, financial and nonfinancial incentives for employees are long-term structural policy options. This study investigates the influence of Bureaucratic, Supportive, and Innovative organizational structures on Consideration and Initiating Structure leadership behaviors. The study comprised survey of 261 purposively sampled social workers employed in Kuwaiti governmental social organizations. The Organizational Culture Index (OCI) and the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ) were used for data collection, and Structural Equation Modeling was used to examine these relationships. The results of this study demonstrate that Bureaucratic cultures significantly affect both the Consideration and Initiating Structure behaviors. Moreover, Supportive organizational culture predicts Consideration, whereas little evidence is found to support if Innovative Culture has any impact on Consideration or Initiating Structure. PRACTICE POINTS: The predominant organizational culture of governmental social work organizations in Kuwait is Bureaucratic. Unfortunately, a smaller number of organizations exhibit a Supportive culture. Above all, the empirical evidence concerning these issues in the context of Kuwait is thin. Most organizations with bureaucratic cultures have leaders whose behavior have either Consideration or Initiating Structure. Those within Supportive cultures demonstrate behaviors associated with Consideration. Administrators in social work settings should promote Innovative and Supportive cultures instead of the predominant Bureaucratic cultures, thus enhancing the workplace environment with team-focused, people-oriented, encouraging, and trustworthy leadership behaviors. COVID-19 outbreak produced an unprecedented crisis in care sectors. Nursing home workers, healthcare, social care, and clinical social workers (HSCW) often took the burden of managing the crisis in their facilities, risking increased stress, trauma, and burnout. As a response to this issue, increased interest in self-care in health and social work literature could be observed. Yet, the concept of self-care is problematic, as it focuses attention on the individual responsibility to care for oneself, regardless of organisational and structural factors and obstacles. The article provides a critical literature review, focused on risk factors and psychological consequences of the pandemic in health and social care and clinical social work, and on the proposed response, namely, self-care. The aim of the article is to systematise knowledge about approaches to self-care in these sectors and to critically review those approaches. Critiques of self-care are considered, including those informed by Foucauldian perspective of governmentality and responsibilization. This article explores the conceptualization of cultural responsivity in Australian child protection through the critical Whiteness theory lens. Critical discourse analysis was deployed to examine the cultural responsivity concept in two statutory child protection documents from New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Interrogating the underlying assumptions present in the texts, the study demonstrated a narrow categorization of who is deemed 'culturally diverse' and a problematic conceptualization of cultural responsivity. We argue that these texts maintain Whiteness as the unexamined cultural norm and can reinforce the 'Othering' effect and racial disproportionality in the child protection system. We conclude with a call to practitioners to remain critical of the widely accepted concepts that inform their practice, such as cultural responsivity to avoid reinforcing racial inequality through their practice. This article highlights social work practices for children with cleft lip and palate (CLP) and their families in a hospital. Embodiment is the main theoretical perspective used to analyse complex encounters between clients (children with CLP and their parents) and social workers in concrete interactive situations. It allows us to symmetrically reflect on how encounters between the bodies of clients, the social worker and medical professionals co-construct and redefine the social worker's identities. Three body-related identities emerge and coexist as the practice proceeds: a normal person with a normal life, a learner without embodied knowledge of a particular illness and a professional with both medical and social work authorities. These three dimensions show how mutual embodiment in contextualised interactions affects the social worker-client relationship. About implications for social work practice, we draw attention to the situated identities of social worker in a specific context, and explain how embodiment serves as a critical tool to improve our understanding of practitioners' dynamic identities through embodied reflexivity. Human milk feeding has generally been described using a heteronormative and cisnormative paradigm focusing on a mother and child dyad with the child nursing at the mother's breast and the father in a supportive role. However, there has been a paradigm shift that has emerged from the LGBTQI+ community that recognizes dynamic gender identities, gender roles, sexual orientations, and diverse family structures. Social workers can best provide support to people with dynamic and diverse gender roles and a variety of family structures. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of social work best practices, including de-sexed and gender-inclusive language, gender-affirming, and trauma-informed care in supporting lactation and infant feeding for LGBTQI+ families. This paper acknowledges and describes terminology that promotes equity and inclusivity in human milk feeding and provides examples of information and anticipatory guidance that social workers can use to protect, promote, and support human milk feeding in the LGBTQI+ community. Background: Forty percent of individuals within the Disorders of Consciousness (DoC) spectrum are misdiagnosed as in a vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (VS/UWS) when in fact they are minimally conscious or emerged, underscoring a need to optimize evaluation techniques and interprofessional care management. Primary Objective: Conscious Care is a proposed care model that aims to improve interprofessional care of patients with DoC in the hospital setting. The aim of this paper is to describe this model's key ingredients and various components. Conclusions: This care model will advance clinician and caregiver preparedness to manage the complexities of this population and advocate for equal access to post-hospital medical and rehabilitative services. Evaluation and treatment of survivors of DoC should incorporate current evidence which drives continuous quality improvement and education to clinicians across the continuum of care. Immediate action must be taken to decrease the vulnerability and neglect of this marginalized population. Conscious Care is an innovative, sustainable solution that will improve interprofessional awareness of best practices and available science, strengthen care, and advocate for the right to quality of life that this population is so often denied. As Training and Education in Professional Psychology (TEPP's) outgoing editorial team ends their term, the authors reflect on the journal's contributions to health service psychology (HSP) and suggest potential priorities and opportunities as both the journal and the science of education and training continue to mature. TEPP's aim is to serve as a forum for thoughtful and rigorous conceptual and empirical investigation of current issues in HSP education and training, and for candid self-reflection about strengths, shortcomings, and growth opportunities in HSP education. The authors review the journal's contributions to this aim through three primary goals established at the beginning of their editorial term: (a) engage the broad training community in sharing its best conceptual and empirical work relevant to education and training across training levels, settings, and focus areas; (b) advance the science of education and training through strong empirical research; and (c) expand emphasis on the sociocultural context in which education and training occurs (Bell et al., 2019). The authors conclude with recommendations to the incoming TEPP editorial team and prospective authors for next steps in advancing HSP education and training. Despite considerable research into educating health professionals, debate continues about what is to be learned in becoming professionals. Some studies highlight what individuals are to acquire in preparation for health professional practice. Others attend to relations among people in healthcare and/or their social, material situations, including forming professional or interprofessional identity. Although these various studies have progressed the debate, they have not yet provided an integrated conceptual framework on preparing health professionals for the challenges of practice. Toward promoting such a framework, this article introduces a notion of responsive attunement for educating health professionals. A key concern in responsive attunement is developing an enhanced capacity to tune in to situations encountered, in order to respond on the basis of this attunement. This notion has three integrative features: (1) it has relevance for practice within and across health professions; (2) it couples what students know and can do (an epistemological dimension) with how they are learning to be (an ontological dimension); and (3) it is applicable at individual and collective levels. Promoting an enhanced capacity to respond with attunement – both individually and collectively – can contribute to preparing health professionals for the challenges of practice in our dynamic, complex world. This paper presents research that examined teacher talk about moderation of English, mathematics and science assessment across Years 4, 6 and 8 as part of a broader inquiry into the use of scaled exemplars to support consistency of teacher judgement. The paper draws on Dorothy E Smith's sociological work, including the process of mapping textual connections to research everyday practices. We illustrate how moderation activities were shaped by systemic policy and related documents. We further illustrate how teachers used artefacts that they were created as part of the research project to leverage the value of moderation discussions. In the project, teachers generated artefacts that were written commentaries or texts explicating their judgement decisions (cognitive commentaries). Our analysis demonstrates how teachers then took these cognitive commentaries and independently embedded them into their everyday work. Teachers described how they used the artefacts in their moderation discussions as a means of improving their own practice, as well as their students' learning. We argue that when teachers are provided with the time and space to share their assessment and pedagogic knowledge and practice with school colleagues, including via cognitive commentaries, they are able to expand their field of professional impact and build their professional knowledge and practice. Background: Much of the literature on harm and injustice in medical education focuses on the impact of oppression rather than trainees' efforts to create change. To acknowledge and make visible these efforts, medical education professionals must grasp how trainees perceive resistance and their role in effecting change. Employing functional linguistic and 'everyday' resistance theories, this critical qualitative study aims to understand trainees' conceptions of resistance practices and their representational choices in moments when they talked about and conceptualised resistance. Methods: Gathering participants through professional networks and snowball sampling, this study employed in‐depth interviews to explore the conceptualisations of resistance among North American medical trainees (9 medical students, 9 residents and fellows). With the use of an applied functional linguistic analysis framework, we analysed the representational metafunction in trainees' conceptualisation of their resistance efforts against social injustice. We began with open coding for 'everyday' acts of resistance and then shifted to focused coding on verbal process types in participants' language to characterise their conceptualisations of resistance. Findings: Participants conceptualised their resistance practices in three distinct ways: first, an almost physical pushing back, drawing largely on material process types (doing); second, an embodied standing up and being present, based predominantly on material and relational process types (being); and third, an epistemic bringing to light, grounded mostly in mental and verbal process types (thinking). These processes of resistance reflect participants' conceptualisations of their efforts to challenge the status quo around inequity, harm and injustice in medical education. Conclusion: This study builds on resistance literature, offering a potential typology of resistance practices as pushing back, being and bringing to light. Because these are 'everyday' acts of resistance, these are tactics available to everyone, including faculty; we all have the power to resist, whether it is in teaching and learning or interacting with larger structures in medicine. This critical qualitative study of medical trainees' conceptions of resistance practices reveals that resistance is not just about doing, but about being (identifying) and thinking (epistemic agency). In the current study, we surveyed forensic interviewers (N = 137) on their note-taking practices, perceptions of note-taking, and note-taking training. Many forensic interviewers surveyed (81%) reported that they take notes during forensic interviews. Of those, the most common reason for note-taking was to assist with remembering what the interviewee reported during the interview (89%) and to guide the formulation of follow-up questions (87%). Note-taking style was also reported upon, with most respondents indicating that they write down keywords that may be used again in the interview (78%), as well as short utterances or sentences related to the presenting narrative (61%). Finally, the majority (50%) of respondents who take notes reported always taking notes, although 29% reported taking notes most of the time. Of those respondents who reported not taking notes during forensic interviews, the majority listed the reasons as being that it distracts the child from the interview (85%) and causes them to break eye contact with the child (46%). Overall, many respondents endorsed the benefits of note-taking to the interviewing process, whereas a small minority reported some perceived risks or concerns with note-taking during interviews. Perhaps most notably, forensic interviewers, both of whom take notes and those who do not, reported low rates of note-taking training and a desire for more information on note-taking practices within the field.
