Abstract

In-situ consolidation of thermoplastic composites using Automated Fibre Placement (AFP) technology is an emerging manufacturing technique, offering tailored composite properties through customised processing parameters. Multiple competing parameters during AFP manufacturing influence the quality and mechanical performance of the laminates. These lay-up parameters are interrelated, and often require comprehensive experimental characterisation which is costly and time-intensive. This study aims to optimise the fracture toughness of in-situ consolidated thermoplastic composite (AS4/APC-2) and investigate the mechanisms that contribute to it. Taguchi's method is employed to efficiently analyse the effect of various process parameters at multiple levels. Based on the obtained results, a considerable effect of process parameters on Mode I and II fracture toughness is observed. The statistical analysis reveals that the Hot Gas Torch (HGT) temperature required for AFP processing significantly affects the Mode I fracture toughness, contributing to 33.8%. Whereas, the consolidation force, another key processing parameter in AFP notably affects Mode II fracture toughness, with the contribution of 81.8%. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) reveals interdependent processing parameter relations for both fracture modes. Abstract

An optimization scheme using the Cell-based Smoothed Finite Element Method (CS-FEM) combined with a Genetic Algorithm (GA) framework is proposed in this paper to design shape adaptive laminated composite marine propellers. The proposed scheme utilise the bend-twist coupling characteristics of the composites to achieve the required performance. An iterative procedure to evaluate the unloaded shape of the propeller blade is proposed, confirming the manufacturing requirements at the initial stage. The optimization algorithm and codes developed in this work were implemented under a variety of parameter settings and compared against the requirement to achieve an ideally passive pitch varying propeller. Recommendations for the required thickness of the propeller blade to achieve optimum bend-twist coupling performance without resulting large rake deformations are also presented.

Abstract

Carbon fibre-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CF-PEEK) composites have gained significant usage across diverse industries like automotive and aerospace due to their desirable characteristics. These properties encompass recyclability, low density, high strength, wear resistance and thermal stability. The components made from CF-PEEK composites for space applications will be subjected to a high radiation environment due to the incoming cosmic rays, comprising protons, α particles, electrons, γ rays, etc., once they escape the Earth's atmosphere. The ion irradiation of CF-PEEK is accompanied by radiation-induced effects, which drastically change the structure and properties of irradiated material. Since the resistance of CF-PEEK to radiation damage has not been studied extensively, this study aims to understand the effect of high-energy He2+ ions on the microstructure and properties of CF-PEEK composites manufactured using automated fibre placement (AFP) under different processing conditions. The samples have been radiated with 5 MeV He2+ ions using an energy degrader wheel to create a layer with relatively uniform damage. Then, were characterized using optical and scanning electron microscopy and their hardness was evaluated using nanoindentation. It was observed that, irradiation increases the hardness of the fibres in all cases. Also, fibre orientation affects the hardness in a statistically significant manner in both unirradiated and irradiated conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Many numerical models of the Automated Fibre Placement (AFP) manufacturing process have been developed to assist in the design process of composite components and structures. Although the tape placement process, in general is a 3-D transient process, limited models considering the 3-D nature of the process exist. This paper describes the development of a 3-D Finite Element (FE) model incorporating the effect of non-concentrated input heat flux distribution on adjacent paths. The model can predict an accurate thermal history of a thermoplastic composite laminate for a complete AFP deposition process. Composite laminates having plies made up of both a single tow and multiple tows have been simulated to study their thermal behaviour during the manufacturing process. Simulations have been conducted both with and without considering the input heat effect on adjacent tows for comparison. Temperatures were measured by embedding two different configurations of optical fibre Bragg grating (FBGs) sensors within the laminate during the lay-up process.
