Abstract

Chagas disease (CD) is a neglected illness affecting approximately seven million individuals, with vector transmission occurring via triatomine bugs. The Rhodniini tribe comprises 24 species, grouped into the Rhodnius and Psammolestes genera. Given the importance of accurately identifying CD vectors, the taxonomy of Psammolestes spp. was revisited using morphological and morphometric data. Specimens of P. tertius, P. coreodes, and P. arthuri were collected, and the morphological characteristics of the head, thorax, abdomen, and eggs were analyzed. Morphometric studies of eggs were also conducted. Dichotomous keys allowing for the differentiation of Psammolestes spp. were elaborated based on adult insect and egg morphological characteristics. Through these studies, it was possible to differentiate the three Psammolestes species and confirm that this genus should not be classified under the Rhodnius genus, contributing to Rhodniini taxonomy. 2. Insectos hallados en nidos de aves de la Argentina: Schoeniophylax phryganophila (Vieillot, 1817) (Aves: Furnariidae), nuevo hospedante para Psammolestes coreodes Bergroth, 1911 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae)

Abstract

Schoeniophylax phryganophila (Vieillot, 1817), commonly called “chotoy”, is part of a monotypic genus, in the family Furnariidae (Aves). Its distribution covers Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay. Their nests are characteristic for having a tubular entrance made of small and thin sticks, with thorns, and located laterally. The insects were found in the nests of S. phryganophila from the provinces of Chaco, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos and Buenos Aires were adults belonging to Coleoptera, Blattodea, Hemiptera, Dermaptera, Orthoptera, Embioptera, Hymenoptera and Diptera. It shares the following percentage of insect species with the nests of the following Furnariidae species: 76.8% only with Anumbius annumbi, 50.7% with Pseudoseisura lophotes, 31.8% with Furnarius rufus and 63.8% of species with Myiopsitta monachus (Psittacidae). 15.9% of species appear only in nests of S. phryganophila. Triatominae Psammolestes coreodes is cited for the first time for this type of nest., Schoeniophylax phryganophila (Vieillot, 1817), vulgarmente llamado “chotoy”, forma parte de un género monotípico, en la familia Furnariidae (Aves). Su distribución abarca Bolivia, Brasil, Paraguay, Argentina y Uruguay. Sus nidos son característicos por poseer una entrada tubular hecha de palitos pequeños y finos, con espinas, y ubicada lateralmente. Los insectos se hallaron en los nidos de S. phryganophila provenientes de las provincias de Chaco, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos y Buenos Aires, y fueron adultos pertenecientes a los órdenes Coleoptera, Blattodea, Hemiptera, Dermaptera, Orthoptera, Embioptera, Hymenoptera y Diptera. Comparte el siguiente porcentaje de especies de insectos con los nidos de estas especies de Furnariidae: un 76,8% solo con Anumbius annumbi, un 50,7% con Pseudoseisura lophotes, un 31,8% con Furnarius rufus y un 63,8% con Myiopsitta monachus (Psittacidae). 3. Triatominae in furnariid nests of the Argentine Gran Chaco.

Abstract

Triatomines (Hemiptera, Reduviidae) are bloodsucking insects involved in the transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, an important public health problem in Latin America. The triatomine species found in sylvatic habitats generally play a limited epidemiological role compared to domestic species, but they may act as a reinfestation source of dwellings after insecticide spraying and have to be carefully considered in control strategies of Chagas disease transmission. The objectives of this work were to carry out a survey of the sylvatic triatomine species colonizing Furnariidae nests in a typical area of the Chaco region of Argentina during the winter and to study the parasites and natural enemies associated with the collected triatomines. Sixty-three triatomine specimens were collected from Furnariidae nests (Coryphistera alaudina and Phacellodomus sibilatrix) randomly selected within the study area. Fifty-four were identified as Psammolestes coreodes, seven as Triatoma platensis, and two as Triatoma infestans. Specimens of T. infestans and T. platensis were found in one nest. The first finding of instar nymphs of T. infestans x T. platensis in a sylvatic habitat is reported. For the first time, sylvatic collected specimens of T. platensis were found infected by T. cruzi. Neste trabalho, relata-se a ocorrência de Psammolestes coreodes Bergroth, 1911 pela primeira vez no Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul. Em 2006, um espécime foi capturado em um ambiente peridomiciliar do município de Miranda, incluindo o Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, na distribuição geográfica dessa espécie.This paper describes the occurrence of Psammolestes coreodes Bergroth, 1911, for the first time in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. In 2006, a specimen was caught in a peridomestic environment in the municipality of Miranda, thereby including Mato Grosso do Sul within the geographical distribution of this species.

Uma comunicacao recente publicado por Almeida et al. em RSBMT relata a ocorrencia de Psammolestes coreodes Bergroth de 1911, pela primeira vez no Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil. No entanto, os autores desconsideraram os artigos pioneiros que ja haviam registrado a ocorrencia desta especie de triatomineo em Miranda, municipio de Mato Grosso do Sul. Assim, a frase "Este artigo descreve a ocorrencia de Psammolestes coreodes Bergroth de 1911, pela primeira vez no Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul", publicada por Almeida et al. foi claramente um erro.
