With increasing emphasis on understanding genetic contribution to disease, inclusion of all racial and ethnic groups in molecular genetic research is necessary to ensure parity in distribution of research benefits. Blacks are underrepresented in large-scale genetic studies of psychiatric disorders. In an effort to understand the reasons for the underrepresentation, this study explored black participants' attitudes towards genetic research of psychiatric disorders. Twenty-six adults, the majority of whom were black (n = 18) were recruited from a New York City community to participate in six 90-minute focus groups. This paper reports findings about respondents' understanding of genetics and genetic research, and opinions about psychiatric genetic research. Primary themes revealed participants' perceived lack of knowledge about genetics, concerns about potentially harmful study procedures, and confidentiality surrounding mental illness in families. Participation incentives included provision of treatment or related service, monetary compensation, and reporting of results to participants. These findings suggest that recruitment of subjects into genetic studies should directly address procedures, privacy, benefits and follow-up with results. Further, there is critical need to engage communities with education about genetics and mental illness, and provide opportunities for continued discussion about concerns related to genetic research.

The National Institutes of Health and other funding agencies have initiated various programs aimed at enhancing diversity in the workforces for health care delivery and biomedical research, These programs have resulted in improvements in research infrastructure and moderate successes in increasing, retaining, and strengthening tire pool of underrepresented minority students and junior faculty at resource-poor institutions serving minorities. We discuss some of the barriers and obstacles confronting such institutions, and the enablers and facilitators that may ameliorate or overcome such barriers. Although our analysis is drawn from lessons learned at an institution serving a largely Asian and Pacific Islander population, analogous situations may be found for other institutions serving minorities. These studies meet ethics requirements, but the tendency to focus on deontological ethical objectives has not been sufficient to ensure ethical or equitable outcomes for research participants. To ensure these outcomes, we need to emphasize utilitarian ethical principles that take into account the historical and contemporary processes that have promoted negative outcomes for racial and ethnic minority participants in research. Suggestions are made for how both deontological and utilitarian ethical concerns regarding respect, beneficence and justice can be addressed within a broadened research ethic.

This study examined the clinical and demographic correlates of work skills and vocational outcome for persons with psychiatric disabilities. The same clinical, demographic, work skills, and vocational outcome instruments were administered to 275 persons working toward their vocational goals at three psychosocial rehabilitation centers. Data regarding vocational outcomes were collected quarterly over a period of 3 1/4 years. Using multivariate statistical techniques, clinical and demographic variables that predict work skills and future vocational outcomes were identified. The implications of the findings for program administrators, system planners, and researchers are discussed.

The objective of this study was to examine sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of 419 patients who were self-referred to a treatment agency because of fear of flying. With the use of homogeneity analyses to explore the association between flight-anxiety and different types of phobia, four specific subtypes of flying phobics were identified. The subtypes differed in terms of flight-anxiety level, age, sex, complaints like 'fear of aircraft accidents, the need to have control over the situation, fear of losing control over themselves,' and phobias underlying their fear of flying, such as claustrophobia, acrophobia, social phobia, and symptoms of panic attacks. It is argued that the typology identified could have implications for the selection of treatment components.

The NIH (National Institutes of Health) Guidelines on the Inclusion of Women and Minorities as Subjects in Clinical Research requires investigators applying for NIH research funds to develop and, if funded, implement plans for the inclusion of women and minority populations in their research, when that research involves human participants. It is the purpose of this article to help investigators understand (a) the scientific context and rationale behind the NIH Guidelines; (b) the NIH-defined concepts and the specific content of the NIH Guidelines; and (c) how the intent of the NIH Guidelines is related to mental health services research, the most applied area of mental health research. The article also discusses where investigators can find additional information as they work to implement the NIH Guidelines.

Log-linear models are used to investigate contingency tables that cross-classify respondents according to item response, mental health status (MHS), and the background variables of ethnicity and gender. Specifically, log-linear models are used to examine item validity, defined as an item response by MHS interaction, and differential item functioning (DIF), defined as an interaction between item response and a background variable. The investigation focused on a set of items that measure subjective well-being and coping behavior. Female (N = 627) and male (n = 338) respondents represented 3 ethnic groups: African American, Anglo-American, and Hispanic/Latino. Strong evidence of item validity and some evidence of DIF was found. Most of the interaction between item response and either ethnicity or gender occurred among respondents with diminished mental health.
