OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of psychosocial well-being on perioperative pain and opioid use among patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) undergoing alveolar bone grafting (ABG). DESIGN: Retrospective review. SETTING: Tertiary level craniofacial clinic. PARTICIPANTS: 34 patients with CLP (median age: 11.7 years), including 25 (73.5%) unilateral CLP and 9 (26.5%) bilateral CLP, who underwent ABG from 2015 to 2022. INTERVENTIONS: ABG using iliac crest bone graft. Patients were prospectively administered four patient-reported psychosocial instruments from the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Perioperative opioid use in morphine equivalent dosage/kilogram, patient-reported pain scores, and length of hospital stay after ABG. RESULTS: Patient-reported anxiety (r = 0.41, p = 0.02) and depressive symptoms (r = 0.35, p = 0.04) correlated to higher perioperative opioid usage. Multivariable regression models including psychosocial scores, total acetaminophen usage, length of surgery, and other simultaneous surgeries were developed for total opioid usage, patient-reported pain, and length of hospital stay. Patient-reported anxiety was independently predictive of higher perioperative opioid use (β=0.36, p = 0.01) and higher pain scores (β=0.39, p = 0.02), but not length of hospital stay. CONCLUSIONS: We identified an association for patient-reported anxiety and perioperative opioid use and pain in a CLP cohort undergoing ABG. Future considerations in preoperative patient and family consultation may be indicated in patients self-reporting higher anxiety in an effort to minimize perioperative opioid usage.

Introduction: In addition to physical symptoms such as dyspnea, fatigue, post-exertional malaise, and pain, a subgroup of patients with Post-COVID-19 syndrome (Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19, PASC) suffers from mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, and neurocognitive impairments. To date, there are no causal treatments available for PASC. While initial studies show that psychotherapy improves psychological symptoms, PASC-related fatigue, and psychosocial functioning, further research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of psychotherapeutic treatment for PASC. Methods and analysis: This study presents a non-randomized controlled trial aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of a five-week multimodal inpatient psychosomatic treatment program for individuals experiencing PASC symptoms and comorbid mental illness. A total of 118 patients presented at the Post-COVID Center at the Universitätsklinikum Erlangen will be assigned to the intervention group receiving inpatient psychosomatic treatment or the control group receiving treatment as usual. The inclusion criteria for the intervention group are a diagnosis of PASC and at least one condition of mental distress and problems with coping with illness. The primary objective of the intervention is to reduce mental ailments, including depression and anxiety, as well as neurocognitive deficits, and to address PASC symptoms such as fatigue and pain. The core elements of the treatment are psychotherapy in individual and group settings, medical treatment, neurocognitive training, and physical therapy, adapted to the individual's capacity and oriented towards the concept of pacing. After enrollment, participants will undergo a 6-month follow-up to assess long-term results and the sustainability of the intervention effects. Discussion: This study examines the effectiveness of inpatient psychotherapeutic treatment in PASC patients with comorbid mental illness in comparison with a control group based on treatment as usual. The results of the study can contribute to the development of evidence-based interventions to address the complex needs of patients with PASC and comorbid mental illness. Aim: To review the international evidence base on interventions to support the mental health of family carers of children with brain injuries in low and middle income countries (LMIC). Methods: Searches were conducted with five electronic databases (Pubmed, Web of Science, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL) using search terms related to "family carers", "brain injury", "children" and "low and middle income countries". Studies were independently screened using predetermined eligibility criteria by two authors. Data were extracted from included studies using standardised data extraction and quality appraisal tools. These data were then subjected to narrative synthesis. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used to govern the review process. Findings: One study met our inclusion criteria and described an acquired brain injury called nodding syndrome which occurs in Sub-Saharan Africa. The study was conducted in Ghana and provided group-based psychotherapy to carers and their children. As such we found no study which sought to solely support the mental health of family carers. Conclusions: There has been a lack of focus in the literature on the mental health of family carers of children with brain injuries in LMIC. Considering the vital importance of caregivers in supporting their children it is imperative that service providers and researchers devise programmes to better meet their needs. Background: The PedsQL™ 4.0 Generic Core Scales (GSC) have been translated into over 60 languages, but use in the sub-Saharan African region is limited. This study aimed to cross-culturally adapt and validate the PedsQL™ 4.0 GCS child self-report and teen self-report versions into the Chichewa language for Malawi. Methods: The English (USA) versions were adapted (translation, back translation and cognitive interviews to evaluate conceptual equivalence) into Chichewa. We recruited 289 children (8–17 years) in Blantyre, Malawi. Classical psychometrics at the item level (missing data, endorsement frequencies, item redundancy) and scale level (internal consistency, convergent, discriminant and known groups validity) was used to evaluate the new Chichewa versions. Results: Six items were found to need cultural adaptation for Malawi. There were problems with missing data (< 5%) and adjacent endorsement frequency (< 10%) among younger children. Internal consistency reliability was acceptable (Cronbach α > 0.7). Convergent validity was generally strong (correlations > 0.4). Discriminant validity (p > 0.05) was evident with respect to gender and age, but not for school grade (p < 0.05). Effect sizes indicating known groups validity were in the expected direction but of variable magnitude. Conclusion: We have successfully adapted the PedsQL™ 4.0 GCS child self-report and teen self-report into Chichewa for use in Malawi. Many aspects of the psychometric evaluation were promising, though some elements were more mixed and we have not yet been able to evaluate test-retest reliability or responsiveness. Background: Digital mental health interventions for smartphones, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) Step-by-Step (SbS) program, are potentially scalable solutions to improve access to mental health and psychosocial support in refugee populations. Our study objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of SbS as self-guided intervention with optional message-based contact-on-demand (COD) support on reducing psychological distress, functional impairment, symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and self-identified problems in a sample of Syrian refugees residing in Egypt. Methods and findings: We conducted a 2-arm pragmatic randomized controlled trial. A total of 538 Syrians residing in Egypt with elevated levels of psychological distress (Kessler Psychological Distress Scale; K10 > 15) and reduced psychosocial functioning (WHODAS 2.0 > 16) were randomized into SbS + CAU (N = 266) or CAU only (N = 272). Primary outcomes were psychological distress (Hopkins Symptom Checklist 25) and impaired functioning (WHO Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0) at 3-month follow-up. Secondary outcomes were symptoms of PTSD (PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 short form, PCL-5 short) and self-identified problems (Psychological Outcomes Profiles Scale, PSYCHLOPS). Intention-to-treat (ITT) analyses showed significant but small effects of condition on psychological distress (mean difference: −0.15; 95% CI: −0.28, −0.02; p =.02) and functioning (mean difference: −2.04; 95% CI: −3.87, −0.22; p =.02) at 3-month follow-up. There were no significant differences between groups on symptoms of PTSD and self-identified problems. Remission rates did not differ between conditions on any of the outcomes. COD was used by 9.4% of participants for a median of 1 contact per person. The main limitations are high intervention dropout and low utilization of COD support. Conclusions: The trial provides a real-world implementation case, showing small positive effects of a digital, potentially scalable and self-guided mental health intervention for Syrian refugees in Egypt in reducing psychological distress and improving overall functioning. Background Methods Results Conclusions Functional recovery remains a core clinical objective for patients with bipolar disorder (BD). Sociodemographic, clinical, and neurocognitive variables are associated with long‐term functional impairment, yet the impact of sex differences is unclear. Functional remediation (FR) is a validated intervention aimed at achieving functional recovery in BD. The present study assessed the effect of sex differences of FR on psychosocial functioning at post‐treatment (6‐months) and 12‐month follow‐up (FUP). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to explore the role of sex as a factor in the efficacy of FR.157 participants with BD were randomly assigned to either FR (N = 77) or treatment as usual group (80). Clinical, sociodemographic, neuropsychological, and functional data were obtained using a comprehensive assessment battery. Sex differences were explored via a general linear model (GLM) for repeated measures to compare the effect of sex on the intervention over time (6 months and FUP).Results demonstrated that FR benefits both sexes, males (p = 0.001; d’ = 0.88) and females (p = 0.04; d’ = 0.57), at 6 months suggesting a generalized functional improvement. Conversely, at 12‐month FUP sex differences were observed only in males (p = 0.005; d’ = 0.68).FR is a beneficial intervention for males and females after treatment, suggesting that there are no relevant distinct needs. Females may benefit from ongoing psychosocial functioning booster sessions after the intervention to maintain original improvements. AbstractObjective: Hoarding disorder is a chronic and progressive psychiatric disorder that often begins in adolescence and early adulthood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of hoarding severity on college students’ psychosocial functioning and possible methods of early intervention. Participants: Undergraduate students (N = 363) at a large public university in the United States. Methods: Participants completed a self-report battery that included their parental history of clutter, perceptions about possible interventions for clutter, and standardized measures of hoarding severity, psychiatric symptoms, and psychosocial functioning. Results: Hoarding symptom severity predicted significant unique variance in emotional support and companionship, even when controlling for comorbid psychiatric symptoms. The main reasons endorsed by participants for disorganization of their objects despite adequate storage space were “lack of time” (37%), “easily distracted” (26%), and “procrastination” (34%). While mental disorders have been broadly researched in people with intellectual disabilities (ID), comparatively less attention has been given to the conceptualisation of good mental health for this population. To capture existing concepts, definitions and measurement approaches of good mental health a systematic literature review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. The search was carried out in eleven databases, using various synonyms of (i) intellectual disability, (ii) mental health, (iii) wellbeing, (iv) definition, and (v) assessment. A total of 2,046 datasets were identified, of which 37 met the inclusion criteria and were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis and content analysis. Results show four main themes: (1) environment, (2) absence of mental illness, (3) physical health, and (4) psychosocial functioning. The fourth was the most dominant theme and was further divided into five sub-themes: (1) emotionality, (2) interpersonal relations, (3) realise own potential, (4) personal resources, and (5) overall appraisal of life. Our findings reveal different conceptualisations of wellbeing, which is a vital part of good mental health, but highlight a notable research gap in the actual definition and conceptualisation of good mental health for people with ID. Depersonalization/derealization disorder (DPD) is a prevalent yet inadequately understood clinical condition characterized by a recurrent or persistent sense of unreality. This study aims to provide insight into DPD through descriptive and comparative analyses involving a large group of Chinese participants. The socio-demographic details (age, gender proportion, education, occupational status, marital status), depersonalized and dissociative symptom characteristics (symptomatic factors or subscales of the Cambridge Depersonalization Scale and the Dissociative Experiences Scale), development trajectory (age of onset, potential precipitating factors, course characteristics), treatment history (duration of delayed healthcare attendance, duration of delayed diagnosis, previous diagnoses), and adverse childhood experiences of the DPD patients are presented. Comparisons of anxiety and depressive symptoms, alongside psychosocial functioning, between DPD participants and those diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, bipolar disorders, and major depressive disorder were conducted. The analysis highlights a higher male preponderance and early onset of DPD, symptomatology marked by derealization, notable impairment in psychosocial functioning, and prolonged periods of delayed healthcare attendance and diagnosis associated with symptom severity. Furthermore, noteworthy relationships between adverse childhood experiences and symptom levels were identified. Eating disorders can significantly impact the psychosocial functioning and physical health of adolescents. Early and effective treatment is crucial to prevent long-lasting and potentially devastating adverse effects. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has recommended cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for eating disorders in adolescents when family therapy is unacceptable, contraindicated, or ineffective. This recommendation was primarily based on the review of promising results from the enhanced version of CBT (CBT-E) adapted for adolescents with eating disorders aged between 12 and 19 years. A non-randomized effectiveness trial has also shown that CBT-E achieved a similar outcome to family-based treatment (FBT) at 6- and 12-months. CBT-E has several advantages. It is acceptable to young people, and its collaborative nature suits ambivalent young patients who may be particularly concerned about control issues. The transdiagnostic scope of the treatment is an advantage as it can treat the full range of disorders that occur in adolescent patients. It is an individual one-on-one treatment that does not necessitate the full involvement of the family. This approach is particularly beneficial for families that can only provide limited support. Future challenges include clarifying the relative efficacy of CBT-E and family therapy for the treatment of adolescent patients with eating disorders in a randomized control trial and increasing its effectiveness, identifying the reasons for the lack of response, and modifying the treatment accordingly. Background: Sport schools are popular environments for simultaneously delivering education and sport to young people. Previous research suggests sport school involvement to have impact (i.e. the positive/negative, intended/unintended and long/short-term outcomes, results and effects) on student athlete's holistic (i.e. academic, athletic, psychosocial and psychological) development. However, previous research is limited by (1) cross-sectional methods, (2) limited multidimensional assessments, (3) lack of consideration for athlete characteristics (e.g. sex) and (4) failure to evaluate how sport school features affect student-athlete impacts. Objectives: The study, using a mixed methods case study approach, aims to (1) longitudinally evaluate the impact of sport school involvement on the holistic development of student athletes, (2) evaluate the impact on holistic development by student-athlete characteristics and (3) explore the features and processes of the sport–school programme that drive/facilitate holistic impacts. Methods: A longitudinal mixed methods design was employed across one full academic school year (33 weeks). Six data-collection methods (i.e. online questionnaire, physical fitness testing battery, academic assessment grades, log diaries, field notes/observation and timeline diagram/illustration) were used to assess the academic, athletic, psychosocial and psychological impacts for 72 student athletes from one sport school in the United Kingdom (UK). Results: Student athletes developed positive long-term holistic overall impacts (i.e. academically, athletically and personally), including maintaining stable and relatively high levels of sport confidence, academic motivation, general recovery, life skills, resilience and friends, family and free time scores. Despite positive impacts, juggling academic and sport workload posed challenges for student athletes, having the potential to lead to negative holistic impacts (e.g. fatigue, stress and injury). Positive and negative impacts were linked to many potential features and processes of the sport school (e.g. academic and athletic support services versus insufficient training load build-up, communication, coordination, flexibility and planning). Furthermore, when considering student-athlete characteristics, females had lower sport confidence, higher general stress and body image concerns and less general recovery than males and student athletes who played sport outside the school had lower general recovery. Conclusions: This mixed method, longitudinal study demonstrated sport school involvement resulted in many positive academic (e.g. good grades), athletic (e.g. fitness development), psychosocial (e.g. enhanced confidence) and psychological (e.g. improved resilience) impacts attributed to the academic and athletic support services provided. However, juggling heavy academic and athletic workloads posed challenges leading to negative impacts including fatigue, pressure, stress and injury. Furthermore, holistic impacts may be sex dependent and further support may be required for female student athletes in sport school environments. Overall, these findings demonstrate the complex nature of combining education and sport commitments and how sport schools should manage, monitor and evaluate the features of their programme to maximise the holistic impacts of sport–school student athletes. Gender‐affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) is used by many transgender and gender‐diverse adults to align physical characteristics with their gender identity, reduce gender incongruence and improve psychological functioning. This narrative review provides an overview of the initiation and monitoring of GAHT in an Australian context. Trans individuals treated with testosterone typically receive standard testosterone doses and formulations recommended for cisgender men, whereas those receiving estradiol GAHT are typically treated with estradiol in combination with an anti‐androgen in those without orchidectomy. Proactive monitoring and mitigation of cardiovascular risk factors is pertinent in all transgender and gender‐diverse adults and bone health is an important consideration in those using estradiol GAHT. Objective: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) affects the quality of life of elderly women. This study aimed to investigate the satisfaction, recovery, and recurrence of symptoms in patients with POP who underwent colpocleisis. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study included elderly women (106 cases with an average age of 74.49±6.07) suffering from stage III or higher POP who underwent partial or total colpocleisis. Pre- and post-operative POP-Q, urinary symptoms, and the level of patient satisfaction were the outcome measures. Results: POP and urinary incontinence significantly decreased after surgery (p<0.001). There was a significant relationship between quality of life (social functioning) and the stage of prolapse after operation (p<0.01). In addition, the patient’s quality of life in the four investigated dimensions, including physical functioning, role limitations, social functioning, and emotional role limitations, was significantly higher than the mean and average (p<0.01). Conclusion: Colpocleisis is a procedure characterized by high subjective and objective success, low regret, and low risk of complications. Therefore, colpocleisis is a minimally invasive and effective treatment method for elderly women. However, further clinical research is needed to evaluate the efficacy of this procedure. Adolescents with autism present lower levels of cardiac vagal modulation. It was hypothesized that Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback (HRVB) increases cardiac vagal modulation in adolescents with autism, resulting in positive effects on physiological and psychosocial parameters. It was also hypothesized that home-based HRVB training is feasible. In a single-blind, randomized sham-controlled pilot trial, adolescents with autism performed supervised HRVB (n = 24) or sham training (n = 20). Subsequently, half of the adolescents received HRVB training at home, whereas the other subset did not practice. Physiological, cortisol and behavioral data were collected during stress-provoking assessments before and after each training period. Supervised HRVB resulted in a late increase in cardiac vagal modulation in adolescents with autism. Heart rate increased and cortisol decreased significantly immediately after supervised HRVB, but none of these effects remained after follow-up. Following supervised HRVB, no significant change in psychosocial functioning was found. Home-based HRVB was feasible, adolescents reported lower symptoms of stress, but a significant decrease in compliance rate was found. HRVB is feasible and effective in adolescents with autism given the late-emerging increases in cardiac vagal modulation and decrease in stress symptoms. Respiratory muscle function is compromised in children recovering from chest wall burns, which potentially leads to more impact on exercise capacity and quality of life. This study investigates the effects of an inspiratory muscle training intervention accompanied with a pulmonary rehabilitation program on respiratory muscle strength, lung function, functional capacity, and quality of life in chest burned children. Forty children with burns, aged from 10 to 18 years old and total body surface area of 30% to 50%, were randomly allocated to the inspiratory muscle training group (IMT- G: n = 20) or control group (CG: n = 20). They received IMT plus pulmonary rehabilitation or pulmonary rehabilitation with sham IMT, respectively for eight weeks. The outcomes were the respiratory muscle strength measured by maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP); lung functions (FEV1, FVC and FEV1/FVC ratio); functional capacity as well as Pediatric Quality of Life to measure physical and psychosocial functioning. outcome measures were assessed at before and after intervention (after eight weeks). Based on the pre-intervention assessments, we found no significant difference between both groups (p > 0.05). Significant post-intervention differences were reported between both groups in MIP (P =.003), MEP (P =.017), FVC (P =.001), FEV 1 (P =.007), FEV 1 /FVC ratio (P =.028), functional capacity (P =.003), physical domain of QoL (P =.006) and psychological domain of QoL (P =.002) in favor of the IMT group. Eight weeks of inspiratory muscle training combined with pulmonary rehabilitation program improved children with chest burns' respiratory muscles strength, lung functions, functional capacity, and quality of life. Inspiratory muscle training may be employed in burn rehabilitation programs. Background: Neurodevelopmental conditions frequently co‐occur. The aim of this paper was to determine whether there is a cumulative association between (1) the number of neurodevelopmental conditions, specifically hyperkinetic disorder (hereafter referred to as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), autism spectrum disorder (hereafter referred to as autism) and intellectual disability, and (2) behavioural and socio‐emotional problems and the level of clinician‐rated functioning for young males and females. Methods: In this cross‐sectional study, diagnostic information, caregiver‐rated behavioural and socio‐emotional data (as conceptualised by the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire) and clinician‐rated functioning scores (as conceptualised by the Children's Global Assessment Scale) were extracted from electronic patient records for 2768 young people aged 3–17 years (mean = 11.55, SD = 3.46). All data were extracted at baseline, that is, at the time the young person was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism and/or an intellectual disability. Ordinal regression analyses tested associations between the number of neurodevelopmental conditions met (i.e. 1, 2 or 3) and behavioural and socio‐emotional outcomes and functioning. Results: After controlling for age and biological sex, the number of neurodevelopmental conditions was associated with higher levels of inattention/hyperactivity and peer problems, lower levels of prosocial behaviour and poorer clinician‐rated functioning. Although these findings were consistent for males, a cumulative association was not identified for females, except for clinician‐rated functioning. Conclusions: For young people, the presence of multiple neurodevelopmental conditions may have a cumulative impact across domains, but this may differ between males and females. Parents engage in a variety of behaviors that have important impacts on children's psychosocial functioning, including their ability to effectively regulate emotions. Parental support includes behaviors that convey warmth, love, and acceptance, whereas parental psychological control includes shaming, guilt induction, and love withdrawal. Although the unique effects of these parenting behaviors are most often examined in the literature, it is possible that they may interact with one another to influence child outcomes. The goal of the present study was to examine whether parental psychological control moderated the effect of parental support on children's emotion (dys)regulation over a 6-month period. Participants included 284 third- through fifth-grade students (51.8% boys; 51.1% Hispanic/Latinx) as well as their homeroom teachers. Children completed self-report measures of parental support, psychological control, and emotion (dys)regulation during the fall and spring semesters of an academic year. Teachers also completed measures of emotion (dys)regulation at each time point. Results indicated that parental psychological control moderated the association between parental support and self-reported emotion regulation over time. Specifically, parental support predicted increases in emotion regulation over time among youth reporting lower levels of psychological control; at higher levels, however, parental support was not associated with emotion regulation. Furthermore, psychological control uniquely predicted increases in child-reported emotion dysregulation, whereas parental support predicted decreases in teacher-reported emotion dysregulation. The conflict between Israelis and Palestinians has been ongoing for decades, with no solution in sight. In view of both the global situation and the changing priorities of various key political players, this conflict has no longer been at the forefront of the media agenda in recent years. Since Hamas' bloody attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 and the invasion of the Gaza Strip by Israeli forces, this conflict has once again become the focus of political and media interest. The escalation and the new dimension of violence with the Hamas attack bring to light psychological forces that become clearer and more accessible to analysis in the face of the escalation of war. Using current events as an example, this essay attempts to understand the psychodynamics of this never-ending conflict, exploring the psychological and psychosocial functions at work perpetuating mutual animosity and thus the distance from peace and activating a recurring re-traumatization of two population groups. Surf therapy programs have been successfully utilised with vulnerable populations worldwide. This study is the first to examine the effects of a surf therapy program on the psychosocial functioning of young men at high risk of adverse life outcomes in Aotearoa New Zealand. A single-group pre-test post-test research design, with repeated measures and replication was used. The Youth Outcome Questionnaire Self-Report's Reliable Change Index and clinical cut-off scores were employed to assess outcomes pertaining to each individual. Effect size measures were used to estimate an overall treatment effect. Modified Brinley plots revealed that 25 out of 27 participants demonstrated reliable improvement in psychosocial functioning, 20 of whom also demonstrated clinically significant improvement. The effect size measures also confirmed a large overall treatment effect. Findings suggest that the Tai Wātea surf therapy program may be a highly effective intervention for reaching, retaining and improving the psychosocial functioning of high-risk young men. Aim: Recently, efforts have been made to use and report person‐reported outcomes (PROs) in randomised clinical trials (RCTs). Here, we aim to (1) assess the status of inclusion of PROs in registered RCTs over 5 years in people with type 1 or 2 diabetes, and (2) map the PRO measures (PROMs) onto predefined domains. Methods: The largest trial registries (Clinicatrials.gov, International Clinical Trial Platform and ISRCTN) were systematically searched for RCTs in people with type 1 and/or type 2 diabetes of all ages between 2018 and 2023. Coding of PROs comprised: (1) PRO measure(s) included yes or no; if yes: (2) PRO(s) as primary outcome yes or no; and (3) mapping PROMs onto predefined PRO domains and per type of intervention. Results: N = 1543 trials met our inclusion criteria, of which n = 673 (44%) included PROs, assessed by 545 different measures. Twenty per cent of drug trials (n = 112) and 71% of behavioural interventions (n = 405) included PROs. In 149 trials (9.6%), a PRO was the primary outcome. The psychological functioning domain was most often assessed across all trials (21.6%), specifically in behavioural (44.8%) and medical device interventions (29.7%). In drug trials, the physical functioning and functional health domain was most included (9%). Across all trials, the social and family functioning domain was least assessed (3%). Conclusions: We noticed an increase in the inclusion of PROs in diabetes RCTs. However, PROs are rarely included as primary outcomes in the majority of studies, particularly in drug trials. Purpose: As a potentially sight-threatening disease with ocular, systemic, and treatment-related complications, uveitis diminishes quality of life (QOL) and affects psychosocial well-being. This review summarizes the existing tools for evaluating psychosocial well-being and/or QOL in patients with uveitis, explores the biological and non-biological factors affecting psychosocial well-being and/or QOL, and proposes future directions for incorporating these tools into clinical practice. Methods: A systematic search of the MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases from inception to June 8, 2022 was conducted, screening for articles focused on psychosocial well-being and/or QOL in patients with uveitis. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed. Results: In uveitis research, the most frequently studied patient-reported outcome measures were vision-related QOL (e.g. Visual Function Questionnaire [VFQ-25]) and health-related QOL (e.g. Short Form Survey [SF-36]), followed by mental health indicators including depression and anxiety. Instruments have also been developed specific to the pediatric population (e.g. Effects of Youngsters' Eyesight on Quality of Life [EYE-Q]). Generally, studies report worse psychosocial outcomes and QOL in patients with uveitis compared to the general population. Contributory factors include both clinical (e.g. visual impairment, ocular comorbidities) and patient-related (e.g. older age, female sex) factors. Conclusion: Given the heterogeneity of instruments used, it is worth considering standardization across large uveitis studies and trials. Beyond research, given the biopsychosocial effects on patients with uveitis, there are benefits to incorporating QOL and psychosocial assessments into clinical practice. Neuromuscular diseases impact on children's health related quality of life but there is a lack of studies in Latin America that measured this construct. To respond to this need, this study aimed to explore quality of life and its relationship with age, functional dependence and specific diagnosis in children and adolescents in Latin America. A cross-sectional correlation study was carried out with 133 caregivers on children (2–18 years old) with various neuromuscular disorders. Parents reported on their children's health related quality of life through the PedsQL GCS and the PedsQL NMM. Differences in quality of life were found when comparing children with high functional dependence with those with mild dependence (p = 0.05). No significant differences were found regarding the child diagnosis. Finally, quality of life was highly correlated with the child's age, even when controlling for functional dependence differences between ages. Children and adolescents with neuromuscular show a diminished health related quality of life, not only in physical functioning but in their psychosocial functioning. Background The TROPiCS-02 study (NCT03901339) demonstrated that sacituzumab govitecan (SG) has superior clinical outcomes over treatment of physician's choice (TPC) chemotherapy in patients with hormone receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor 2 receptor-negative (HR+/HER2−) metastatic breast cancer (mBC). Here, we present health-related quality of life (HRQoL) patient-reported outcome (PRO) findings from this study. Patients and Methods Eligible adults with HR+/HER2− mBC who previously received a taxane, endocrine-based therapy, a CDK4/6 inhibitor, and 2-4 lines of chemotherapy were randomized 1:1 to receive SG or TPC until progression or unacceptable toxicity. PROs were assessed at baseline and on day 1 of each cycle, using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality-of-Life Core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30), EQ-5D-5L, and PRO Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (PRO-CTCAE). Results Compared to TPC, overall least square mean change from baseline was significantly better for SG for physical functioning and dyspnea, but worse for diarrhea. Time to first clinically meaningful worsening or death was significantly longer for SG in global health status/quality of life, physical functioning, fatigue, emotional functioning, dyspnea, insomnia, and financial difficulties of the EORTC QLQ-C30 and the EQ-VAS, but longer for TPC in diarrhea. Few patients in both arms reported experiencing any worsening to level 3 or 4 treatment-related symptomatic events during treatment, as assessed by 16 PRO-CTCAE items, except for diarrhea frequency and amount of hair loss, which favored TPC. Conclusions SG was associated with an HRQoL benefit in most symptoms and functioning, compared with TPC. Diabetes stigma is the social burden of living with diabetes. People with diabetes may experience or perceive an adverse social judgment, prejudice, or stereotype about living with diabetes at work, school, in healthcare settings, popular culture, or relationships. This review describes the methods that have been used to assess diabetes stigma, and explores the prevalence of diabetes stigma, associated sociodemographic and socioeconomic factors, cultural factors, and how diabetes stigma is associated with clinical outcomes, including HbA1c levels, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe hypoglycemia, and chronic complications, in addition to psychosocial complications in youth, adolescents, and adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). The prevalence of diabetes stigma has been reported as high as 78% in adults with T1D, 70% in adults with T2D, 98% in youth and adolescents with T1D, and is unknown in youth and adolescents with T2D. Diabetes stigma has been associated with lower psychosocial functioning, decreased self-care behaviors, higher HbA1c levels, and higher frequency of diabetes complications in adults with T1D and T2D. In adolescents and young adults with T1D, diabetes stigma is associated with lower psychosocial functioning, higher HbA1c levels, and higher frequency of diabetic ketoacidosis and severe hypoglycemia episodes in addition to chronic complications. In youth and adolescents with T2D, one study demonstrated an association of diabetes stigma with lower psychosocial functioning, higher HbA1c levels, and presence of retinopathy. Background: Substance use disorders (SUDs) and mental health disorders (MHDs) are significant public health challenges with far-reaching consequences on individuals and society. Dual diagnosis, the coexistence of SUDs and MHDs, poses unique complexities and impacts treatment outcomes. A research landscape analysis was conducted to explore the growth, active countries, and active journals in this field, identify research hotspots, and emerging research topics. Method: A systematic research landscape analysis was conducted using Scopus to retrieve articles on dual diagnosis of SUDs and MHDs. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to focus on research articles published in English up to December 2022. Data were processed and mapped using VOSviewer to visualize research trends. Results: A total of 935 research articles were found. The number of research articles on has been increasing steadily since the mid-1990s, with a peak of publications between 2003 and 2012, followed by a fluctuating steady state from 2013 to 2022. The United States contributed the most articles (62.5%), followed by Canada (9.4%). The Journal of Dual Diagnosis, Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, and Mental Health and Substance Use Dual Diagnosis were the top active journals in the field. Key research hotspots include the comorbidity of SUDs and MHDs, treatment interventions, quality of life and functioning, epidemiology, and the implications of comorbidity. Emerging research topics include neurobiological and psychosocial aspects, environmental and sociocultural factors, innovative interventions, special populations, and public health implications. Intimate relationship distress is prevalent and is associated with poorer health, mental health, and mortality outcomes. Evidence-based couple therapies target cognitive, behavioral, and emotional processes that underlie relationship dysfunction. Increasing research and clinical evidence supports the efficacy of ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) for addressing clinical mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder, and more. The purported mechanisms of KAP are also likely to improve psychosocial and relational functioning for patients and may be useful for supporting change mechanisms in couple therapy. This paper reviews the current evidence for therapeutic ketamine and KAP and outlines how the mechanisms of ketamine therapy may also augment the cognitive, behavioral, and emotional interventions in the most commonly used evidence-based couple therapies. Key mechanisms include increased neuroplasticity, changes in functional connectivity, adaptive dissociation, decreased inhibition, and reduced avoidance. Given the reciprocal interaction between relationship dysfunction and mental health problems, ketamine may also help alleviate relationship distress by directly treating clinical mental health symptoms. We then outline a proposed framework for ketamine-assisted couple therapy, addressing the application of KAP preparation, dosing, and integration to a dyadic intervention framework in a way that can be applied to different couple therapy modalities. This clinical framework for couples’ KAP may be useful for clinicians and researchers working to improve the efficacy of couple therapy, particularly when one or both partners has accompanying mental health concerns. Background: Pregnancy is associated with physical, psychological, hormonal, and social alterations that may lead to detrimental effects on sexual function and psychological well-being. This study sought to examine sexual function and psychosocial well-being of pregnant women in Somalia in comparison with their non-pregnant counterparts. Methods: We enrolled 487 consecutive women in monogamous marriages. Data included maternal age, gravida, parity, gestational week, education status of wives and husbands, and residence area. The participants completed the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and the Brief Symptom Inventory-18 (BSI-18). Results: Of 487 women, 241 were pregnant, and 246 were non-pregnant. The overall incidence of sexual dysfunction was 57.7%, being 64.0% for pregnant and 51.6% for non-pregnant women (p = 0.010). Pregnant women exhibited significantly lower FSFI scores on desire, arousal, lubrication, and orgasm, and significantly higher total BSI, anxiety, depression and somatization scores. The frequencies of sexual dysfunction were 57.9%, 45.9%, and 78.9% during the first, second, and third trimesters, respectively (p = 0.0001). As compared with the first and second trimesters, and non-pregnancy, the third trimester of pregnancy was associated with a significantly lower total FSFI score and significantly decreased levels of desire, arousal, lubrication, and orgasm, as well as a significantly higher total BSI score and a significantly increased level of anxiety. In regression analysis, pregnancy was inversely associated with sexual function parameters of desire, arousal, lubrication, and orgasm, and with BSI parameters of depression, anxiety and somatization. This study explored how AI and bowel symptoms impact QoL in a Norwegian population by (1) describing the psychosocial and sexual consequences of AI, and (2) investigating factors most often associated with AI-specific QoL.A cross-sectional study among patients with AI referred to hospital outpatient clinics was conducted. A Norwegian version of ICIQ-B was used to measure bowel control, bowel symptoms, sexual impact, and impact on QoL.A total of 208 persons with AI completed the questionnaire. The results demonstrated that these patients are overall embarrassed, make plans according to the bowels, ensure the presence of a nearby toilet, and many abstain from sexual activities. After adjusting for other variables included in a multivariable model, we found that having bowel accidents on one’s mind had the greatest relative impact on QoL, followed by lower bowel control, using more medications to stop bowels, having more pain/soreness around the back passage, lower age, and more straining to open the bowels.AI has substantial consequences for the psychosocial function and sexual activities of persons with AI. This study indicates that worrying about potential faecal accidents and the social stigma associated with this have greater impact on QoL than actual bowel leakages. Background: Previous research literature reported different results regarding the long-term effects that cannabis use can exert on the frontal lobe neurocognitive functions of its users. Another body of research suggested that cannabis use negatively affects the person's general level of occupational and psychosocial functioning consequently to these alterations. Some other research results did not support these findings. To date, it is still debatable whether chronic cannabis use triggers negative neurocognitive effects in chronic users even after a period of abstinence. Research data exploring consequent adverse outcomes on the general individual occupational and psychosocial functioning is not yet conclusive. Results: We conducted this study to examine the residual neurocognitive effects of cannabis use, whether it is affected by duration of cannabis use before abstinence, and its relation to individual's global assessment of functioning exhibited in the person's occupational and social life whether it's family or friends. Our sample comprised 80 male participants (18–45 years old) who were grouped into 4 groups (3 groups with different durations of use and a control group), with no significant difference between the four studied groups regarding age, education, and socioeconomic level. The Kruskal Wallis test was used to test the significance of differences in the distribution of total frontal lobe battery results and the general assessment of function scores using GAF scores between study groups. Post hoc testing was performed to adjust for multiple comparisons using Bonferroni method. Conclusion: Data analysis showed that cannabis users experienced general functional disturbances that encompass impairments in social and occupational life aspects. These impairments in function are correlated with the presence of neurocognitive deficits even after a period of abstinence. Background: The prevalence of co-occurring chronic pain and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has yet to be established in a nationally representative sample of US veterans, and little is known about the individual contributing roles of these disorders to the psychiatric and functional burden of this comorbidity. Objective: To determine the prevalence of chronic pain, PTSD, and co-occurring chronic pain and PTSD, and psychiatric comorbidities and psychosocial functioning in these groups. Design: Data were analyzed from the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, which surveyed a nationally representative sample of US veterans. Participants: Veterans (n=4069) were classified into four groups: control (i.e., no PTSD or chronic pain), chronic pain only, PTSD only, and co-occurring chronic pain and PTSD. Main Measures: A probable PTSD diagnosis was established using the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5, and a chronic pain diagnosis using a self-report item that queried health care professional diagnoses. Psychiatric and functional status were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-4, Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, Screen of Drug Use, Suicide Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised, Short Form Health Survey-8, Brief Inventory of Psychosocial Functioning, and Medical Outcomes Study Cognitive Functioning Scale. Key Results: A total of 3.8% of veterans reported both probable PTSD and a diagnosis of chronic pain. Relative to veterans with chronic pain alone, those with co-occurring chronic pain and probable PTSD were more likely to screen positive for psychiatric disorders (odds ratios [ORs]=2.59–9.88) and scored lower on measures of psychosocial functioning (Cohen's ds=0.38–1.43). Relative to veterans with probable PTSD only, those with co-occurring chronic pain and probable PTSD were more likely to have attempted suicide (OR=4.79; 95%CI, 1.81–12.69). Conclusions: Results underscore the importance of whole health care that considers a broad range of health and functional domains in the assessment and treatment of co-occurring chronic pain and PTSD in veterans. Unaccompanied minors (UM) entering Europe face significant psychosocial challenges. Uncertain residence situations, marginalization during the asylum process, and low levels of support increase their risk of developing mental health and drug use issues. However, little is known about drug involvement (using and dealing) in this group. This is the first study to investigate drug involvement among young adults who entered Europe as UM from their subjective perspectives. We conducted qualitative interviews with 11 Afghan men who came to Sweden as UM in 2015/2016 and had experience of using and/or selling drugs, and analyzed the transcripts based on grounded theory. Drug initiation usually occurred after arrival in Sweden and was related to peer influence. Using and selling fulfilled specific psychosocial functions including self-medication and money-making. 'Not having a real life' (being excluded from school, employment, and many social activities) emerged as a central motive for drug involvement. By using or selling drugs, feelings of social belonging and control over one's own life could be experienced. Long, uncertain asylum processes and social exclusion exacerbate the risk of UM and former UM using or selling drugs. Purpose: To perform a scoping review to investigate the psychosocial impact of having an altered facial expression in five neurological diseases. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed. Studies were on Bell's palsy, facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD), Moebius syndrome, myotonic dystrophy type 1, or Parkinson's disease patients; had a focus on altered facial expression; and had any form of psychosocial outcome measure. Data extraction focused on psychosocial outcomes. Results: Bell's palsy, myotonic dystrophy type 1, and Parkinson's disease patients more often experienced some degree of psychosocial distress than healthy controls. In FSHD, facial weakness negatively influenced communication and was experienced as a burden. The psychosocial distress applied especially to women (Bell's palsy and Parkinson's disease), and patients with more severely altered facial expression (Bell's palsy), but not for Moebius syndrome patients. Furthermore, Parkinson's disease patients with more pronounced hypomimia were perceived more negatively by observers. Various strategies were reported to compensate for altered facial expression. Conclusions: This review showed that patients with altered facial expression in four of five included neurological diseases had reduced psychosocial functioning. Future research recommendations include studies on observers' judgements of patients during social interactions and on the effectiveness of compensation strategies in enhancing psychosocial functioning. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: Negative effects of altered facial expression on psychosocial functioning are common and more abundant in women and in more severely affected patients with various neurological disorders. Health care professionals should be alert to psychosocial distress in patients with altered facial expression. Building on the premises of Positive Psychology, this undertaking conducted a pilot study of the designed 14-session Positive Psychology Intervention (PPI) program established based on the character strengths and virtues (CSV) of persons who use drugs (PWUDs) to assess its usefulness, delivery details, and impacts. Conducted in one of the biggest Drug Abuse Treatment and Rehabilitation Center in the Philippines, 24 PWUDs were randomly selected by the program staff to participate in its pilot run while securing all necessary ethical guidelines and requirements. Via within-subjects pretest-posttest experimental design, the especially adapted and developed tools were used to assess the PWUDs' progress as they were facilitated by the said program. Results yielded significant improvements in the PWUDs' mental wellbeing (M = 1.29, SD = 0.35; t (21) = 9.30, P <.00001), life satisfaction (M = 1.82, SD = 0.24; t (21) = 9.89, P <.00001), and psychological functioning (M = 1.65, SD = 0.19; t (21) = 8.58, P <.00001). Moreover, the PWUDs regarded the designed PPI program very highly and experienced it with positive outcomes, especially for their CSVs. Further improvement of the said program centers around proper time allotment, number of participants in the program sessions, appropriate activities per session, including specific ice breaker games, activity materials needed, and the proper sequencing of each session. These data are used to improve the PPI program structures and components. Pertinent conclusions about the gathered data were drawn, and relevant recommendations were also thereby provided. Introduction: Adolescence is a special phase of life in which fundamentals of psychosocial functioning are formed. The present study investigates how adolescents' self-perception of social relationships in inclusive classes affect personality functioning. Furthermore, we examine whether the association between self-perceived social relationships and personality functioning is stronger for students with special educational needs in the domains of learning (SEN L) and social -emotional development (SED) than for students without SEN. Methods: At two measurement points questionnaire data was collected from 927 sixth- and seventh-graders from 20 primary and 20 comprehensive inclusive classes in Germany. Results: Results of longitudinal multilevel analyses show partially different results for sixth- and seventh-graders. Overall, students' perceived social relatedness predicted personality functioning. Students who perceived their social relationships more positively showed healthier personality functioning. Further, SEN SED represents a potential risk factor for personality functioning. But, we observed that differences in personality functioning between seventh-graders with SEN L or SED and those without SEN decreased over time. Furthermore, SEN does not appear to reinforce the association between low self-perception of social relationships and risky personality functioning. Discussion: The findings are discussed in the context of inclusive education and implications for future research as well as practice are given. Objective Methods Results Significance To describe the characteristics of psychogenic non‐epileptic (functional) seizures (PNES) in adults with epilepsy and intellectual disability (ID) and to establish differences and risk factors regarding psychosocial functioning between individuals with and without PNES.Adults with ID and epilepsy living in epilepsy care facilities in The Netherlands were screened for PNES by a neurologist. A control group consisting of people with epilepsy and ID, without PNES, was matched according to age, sex, and level of ID. Objective data were retrieved retrospectively from clinical notes of the resident. Standardized questionnaires and tests, adjusted for people with ID, were obtained from participants and their nursing staff. Differences were analyzed using paired t tests, Wilcoxon signed‐rank tests, or McNemar's tests, appropriate for matched case–control studies. Conditional logistic regression identified PNES risk factors.Five hundred forty individuals were screened, of which 42 had PNES (point prevalence 7.8%). In total, 35 cases and 35 controls gave consent. Proxy reports indicated that PNES impacted daily life in 79% by adjusting the individual's schedule, and caused minor injuries in one‐third. Those with PNES were mainly female (69%); had a mild (46%) or moderate (37%) level of ID; showed more symptoms of depression (p = .024), anxiety (p = .030), self‐injurious behavior (p = .015); and experienced more negative life events (p < .001). Clinically relevant predictors of PNES were the number of negative life events (odds ratio [OR] 1.71, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.12–2.53) and self‐injurious behaviors (OR 5.27, 95% CI .97–28.81).Previously, PNES in individuals with ID and epilepsy were described mainly as a reinforced behavioral pattern, due to limited associations with psychiatric disorders. Our results demonstrate that this population does show individual psychosocial vulnerabilities when measured with instruments adjusted for this population, as indicated by proxy reports from daily caregivers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the health-related quality of life (QoL) in a sample of healthy preschool children in the Republic of Croatia and comment on whether and how the research results open the preconditions for positive individual scenarios of the future related to positively oriented upbringing. The Pediatric quality of life inventory generic core scales (PedsQLTM) was completed by 230 healthy preschool children (5-6 years old) and their parents as a proxy-report. The data was descriptively analysed first. Reliability was assessed by Cronbach's alpha. The statistically significant difference between the PedsQLTM scales (physical, emotional, social, kindergarten and psychosocial functioning) for preschool children and their parent's proxy-report were analysed. The PedsQLTM scale score means for children's self-report ranged 71.32-76.49, with the total score was 74.53. Score means for their parent's proxy-report scale ranged 73.59-85.46, with the total score of 80.93. All the self-report and proxy-report scales showed satisfactory reliability with Cronbach's alpha varying between 0.64 and 0.89. Statistically significant difference between scales in self-report and proxy-report was for physical (t=-7.12, p<0.01), social (t=-6.42, p<0.01) and school functioning (t=-2.62, p<0.01) as well as psychosocial (t=-4.82, p<0.01) and total health (t=-6.85, p<0.01). The Croatian PedsQLTM is valid and reliable generic pediatric healthrelated QoL measurement that can be recommended for children's self-reports and their parent's proxy-reports. Objective: Serious mental illness (SMI) remains a leading cause of disability worldwide. However, there is limited Australian evidence of community-based programs to enhance the psychosocial wellbeing of adults experiencing SMI. Foundations is a long-term community-based psychosocial outreach support program delivered in Tasmania, Australia. A longitudinal non-randomised controlled trial was conducted to examine the effectiveness of the Foundations program on adults' psychosocial functioning, clinical symptomology, and hospital readmissions, in comparison to standard care only. Method: Participants were adults aged 18-64 years experiencing SMI. Control participants received standard clinical care only. Intervention participants were engaged in the Foundations program in addition to standard care. Data were collected at program commencement, midpoint, closure, and six-months post-closure. Linear mixed modelling was used to examine differences between groups. Results: Intervention participants achieved better psychosocial functioning in comparison to the control group by program closure and at six-month follow-up. No significant differences were observed for clinical mental health symptomology or hospital readmission rates. Length of readmission stay was significantly shorter for intervention participants. Conclusions: The findings highlight the additional value of community-based, recovery-oriented, psychosocial outreach support alongside clinical mental health care to enhance the psychosocial wellbeing of adults experiencing SMI. Background: Multimorbidity is increasingly prevalent among ageing patients, leading to reduced daily functioning. To address the challenges posed by multimorbidity in older adults, a person- and context-centred approach is needed. This study aimed to develop a questionnaire as a self-assessment tool for older adults focusing on functioning in general practice based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Methods: A mixed-methods approach was employed in the development and validation of the German EFA23 (Erfassung Funktionaler Gesundheit im Alter – 23 Fragen; Assessing Functional Health in Old Age – 23 questions) questionnaire. Based on an ICF subset developed in a preparatory phase and consensus study, questionnaire items were formulated and tested in a qualitative pretest, followed by a validation study. A workshop with general practitioners (GPs) was held to develop a supplementary manual for GPs on how to interpret the questionnaire results and discuss them with the patients. Results: A total of 69 items were developed and tested in the qualitative pretest with 15 respondents, resulting in 37 items for the validation study. The validation study, involving 237 older adults, showed the presence of one significant principal component. It demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.967) and construct validity, showing positive correlations with established assessment tools. Descriptive statistics showed differences between the means of self-assessment by patients and an external GP assessment. The final EFA23 questionnaire consists of 23 items assessing limitations in functioning. Conclusions: The EFA23 questionnaire can be used as a valid self-assessment instrument to measure functioning in older adults, supporting a person- and context-centred approach in general practice. Background: Patients with an ultra-high risk of psychosis (UHR) are more likely to transition to psychosis. Attachment style has also been associated with psychosis and other symptoms. Aims: To review attachment styles in UHR patients and to analyze related psychosocial factors. Ours is the first systematic review of attachment in this population. Method: We performed a systematic review of attachment and related psychosocial factors in UHR patients following the PRISMA methodology. Results: We identified five studies. The results revealed high rates of insecure attachment in this population (more than 80%). The UHR sample presented high levels of depression, anxiety, social anxiety, emotional reactivity, trauma, and poor mentalization. Premorbid social adjustment was a predictor of improvement in disorganization and negative symptoms. The rate of transition to psychosis was 10%. Attachment patterns accounted for 16.8% of the variance. This vulnerability for psychosis was also associated with poor mentalization. Conclusion: Early detection of patients with UHR and insecure attachment is crucial, since early intervention to address symptoms, mentalization, and attachment is feasible and may lead to an improvement in the remaining associated psychosocial related factors (secure style: better global functioning and less affective and anxious symptoms). Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) can lead to long-lasting cognitive impairments, and some survivors experience cognitive decline post-recovery. Early detection of decline is important for care planning, and understanding risk factors for decline can elucidate targets for prevention. While neuropsychological testing is the gold standard approach to characterizing cognitive function, there is a need for brief, scalable tools that are capable of detecting clinically significant changes in post-TBI cognition. This study examines whether a clinically significant change can be detected using the Brief Test of Adult Cognition by Telephone (BTACT) in a sample of individuals with chronic TBI and investigates whether potentially modifiable factors are associated with cognitive decline. Ninety participants aged 40 or older with complicated mild-to-severe TBI participated in two telephone-based study visits ∼1 year apart. Demographic, head trauma exposure, comorbid medical conditions, physical, and psychosocial functioning data were collected via self-report. The BTACT, a brief measure of global cognitive function, was used to assess cognitive performance across six domains. A reliable change index for quantifying clinically significant changes in BTACT performance was calculated. Results revealed cognitive decline in 10–27% of participants across various cognitive domains. More specifically, only depressive symptoms, including depressed affect and anhedonia, were significantly associated with cognitive decline after correcting for multiple comparisons using false discovery rate (FDR). Other factors such as the number of blows to the head, male gender, dyspnea, increased anxiety symptoms, seizures, illicit drug use, and fewer cardiovascular comorbidities should be considered hypothesis generating. Importantly, age was not a significant predictor of cognitive decline, which challenges the assumption that cognitive decline is solely related to the natural aging process. It suggests that there are unique factors associated with TBI that impact cognitive function, and these factors can affect individuals across the lifespan. The BTACT is a brief and sensitive tool for identifying clinically meaningful changes in cognitive function over a relatively brief period (i.e., 1 year) in a sample of individuals in the chronic stages of TBI (i.e., x̄ = 6.7 years post-TBI). Thus, the BTACT may be useful in surveillance efforts aimed at understanding and detecting decline, particularly in situations where in-person cognitive screening is impractical or unfeasible. We also identified potentially modifiable targets for the prevention of post-TBI cognitive decline. These findings can offer insights into treatment goals and preventive strategies for individuals at risk for cognitive decline, as well as help to facilitate early identification efforts. Purpose: We investigated the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of an adolescent and young adult (AYA)-aged South African childhood cancer survivor (CCS) cohort. Methods: Participants completed the Minneapolis-Manchester Quality of Life adolescent and adult forms. The overall Cronbach's alpha coefficients were 0.81 (adolescent form) and 0.92 (adult form). The scale-level content validity indexes were acceptable (0.88 and 0.89 for the adolescent and adult forms, respectively). The total domain and overall HRQoL scores were calculated. Results: Sixty-two survivors completed the adolescent form and 30 completed the adult form. The median age was 17.5 years (range 13–34 years), and the median time from diagnosis was 12 years (male:female ratio 1:1.2). Risk factors for poor physical functioning included age at study visit (p = 0.015), solid tumor diagnosis (p = 0.012), radiotherapy (p = 0.021), and surgery (p = 0.006). Six or more late effects impacted most domains negatively; severe late effects (p = 0.020) decreased physical functioning. Lower socioeconomic status was associated with poorer physical (p = 0.006) and cognitive (p = 0.047) functioning. The adult form cohort had poorer psychological (p = 0.014) and social functioning (p = 0.005) and body image (p = 0.016) than the adolescent form cohort. Conclusion: Older age, radiotherapy, surgery, solid tumor diagnosis, and the number and severity of late effects negatively influenced HRQoL in AYA-aged CCSs. A long-term follow-up (LTFU) risk stratification system should include HRQoL status to assist with holistic LTFU care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
