Abstract: In this Letter, we report the discovery of the highest redshift, heavily obscured, radio-loud (RL) active galactic nucleus (AGN) candidate selected using JWST NIRCam/MIRI, mid-IR, submillimeter, and radio imaging in the COSMOS-Web field. Using multifrequency radio observations and mid-IR photometry, we identify a powerful, RL, growing supermassive black hole with significant spectral steepening of the radio spectral energy distribution (f 1.28 GHz ∼ 2 mJy, q 24 μm = −1.1, α 1.28−3 GHz = − 1.2, Δα = − 0.4). In conjunction with ALMA, deep ground-based observations, ancillary space-based data, and the unprecedented resolution and sensitivity of JWST, we find no evidence of AGN contribution to the UV/optical/near-infrared (NIR) data and thus infer heavy amounts of obscuration (N H > 1023 cm−2). Using the wealth of deep UV to submillimeter photometric data, we report a singular solution photo-z of z phot = 7.7 − 0.3 + 0.4 and estimate an extremely massive host galaxy ( log M ⋆ = 11.92 ± 0.5 M ⊙ ) hosting a powerful, growing supermassive black hole​​​​​ (L Bol = 4−12x × 1046 erg s−1). This source represents the farthest known obscured RL AGN candidate, and its level of obscuration aligns with the most representative but observationally scarce population of AGN at these epochs.

The heterogeneity of ovarian cancer (OC) has made developing effective treatments difficult. Nowadays, hormone therapy plays a growing role in the treatment of OC; however, hormone modulators have had only limited success so far. To provide a more rigorous foundation for hormonal therapy for different OC subtypes, the current study used a series of bioinformatics approaches to analyse the expression profiles of genes encoding membrane progesterone (PGRMC1, progestins and the adipoQ receptor [PAQR] family), and androgen (zinc transporter member 9 [ZIP9], OXER1) receptors. Our work investigated also their prognostic value in the context of OC. We found differences in expression of ZIP9 and OXER1 between different OC subtypes, as well as between patient tumour and normal tissues. Expression of mRNA encoding PAQR7 and PAQR8 in a panel of OC cell lines was below the qPCR detection limit and was downregulated in tumour tissue samples, whereas high expression of PGRMC1 and PAQR4 mRNA was observed in rare subtypes of OC cell lines. In addition, chemical inhibition of PGRMC1 reduced the viability of rare OCs represented by COV434 cells. In conclusion, PGRMC1 and PAQR4 are promising targets for anticancer therapy, particularly for rare subtypes of OC. These findings may reflect differences in the observed responses of various OC subtypes to hormone therapy.

Abstract Life-limiting conditions often cause children to be overlooked as participants in everyday activities. For parents child development should lead to independence in daily living activity. For parents of children who are disabled, independence is a step to a better quality of a child’s life. The aim of the study was to examine the effectiveness of functional intervention of self-service activities in children with life-limiting conditions at the age of 3–6 years of life. 32 children aged 3–6 years (N = 32, girls and boys) were followed for two years. The Progress Assessment Chart of Personal and Social Development (PPAC) H.C Gunzburg according to Witkowski inventory was used to assess. After two years of functional intervention, statistically significant improvement in everyday activities was observed in examining group. The control group showed less progress than the study group, even though the children in the control group were older. Functional intervention allows for effective work with a patient with life-limited conditions. Better progress was observed in the younger group, subjected to therapy for the existence of developmental potential occurring in children with limitations in intellectual development.

Abstract The etiology of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), frequently observed following COVID-19 infection, remains elusive. This study unveils insights derived from cytokine analysis in the sera of MIS-C patients, both before and after the administration of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and glucocorticosteroids (GCS). In this study, we employed a comprehensive 45-cytokine profile encompassing a spectrum of widely recognized proinflammatory and antiinflammatory cytokines, as well as growth factors, along with other soluble mediators. The analysis delineates three principal cytokine-concentration patterns evident in the patients’ sera. Pattern no.1 predominantly features proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-15, IL-1ra, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 (CXCL10/ IP-10), and IL-10) exhibiting elevated concentrations upon admission, swiftly normalizing post-hospital treatment. Pattern no. 2 includes cytokines (IL-17 A, IL-33, IFNγ, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and programmed death ligand (PD-L1)) with moderately elevated levels at admission, persisting over 7–10 days of hospitalization despite the treatment. Pattern no. 3 comprises cytokines which concentrations escalated after 7–10 days of hospitalization and therapy, including IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-13, platelet-derived growth factor AA/BB (PDGF AA/BB). The observed in cytokine profile of MIS-C patients showed a transition from acute inflammation to sustaining inflammation which turned into induction of humoral memory mechanisms and various defense mechanisms, contributing to recovery.

As eukaryotic cells progress through cell division, the nuclear envelope (NE) membrane must expand to accommodate the formation of progeny nuclei. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, closed mitosis allows visualization of NE biogenesis during mitosis. During this period, the SUMO E3 ligase Siz2 binds the inner nuclear membrane (INM) and initiates a wave of INM protein SUMOylation. Here, we show these events increase INM levels of phosphatidic acid (PA), an intermediate of phospholipid biogenesis, and are necessary for normal mitotic NE membrane expansion. The increase in INM PA is driven by the Siz2-mediated inhibition of the PA phosphatase Pah1. During mitosis, this results from the binding of Siz2 to the INM and dissociation of Spo7 and Nem1, a complex required for the activation of Pah1. As cells enter interphase, the process is then reversed by the deSUMOylase Ulp1. This work further establishes a central role for temporally controlled INM SUMOylation in coordinating processes, including membrane expansion, that regulate NE biogenesis during mitosis.

Introduction: Bronchial asthma is one of the most common inflammatory diseases among adults and children. It is characterized by the occurrence of bronchial obstruction, which is manifested, for instance, by a feeling of shortness of breath, wheezing, a feeling of tightness in the chest, a feeling of squeezing in the chest. In addition to pharmacological treatment, health behavior including sport is of great importance. In this publication, we will attempt to discuss the effects of swim training on asthma and respiratory system function. We will try to answer the question whether swimming is a safe form of exercise for patients with bronchial asthma. Material and methods: Review of the specialized literature in the field of pulmonology, guidelines for treatment of bronchial asthma and articles available on PubMed and Google Scholar database searching by the keywords Aim of the study: The aim of this publication is to review the available literature to answer the question of whether swimming training is a suitable form of exercise for asthmatic patients and what effect it has on respiratory function Conclusions: The treatment of bronchial asthma is based on the pharmacological treatment. In addition to medications, non-pharmacological methods and health behaviours are important. Appropriate physical activity for people with asthma may include swimming training, which has a beneficial effect on lung function and asthma symptoms management, especially in the paediatric population. There are studies that suggest that swimming carries a lower risk of causing bronchospasm than other sport activities, however, there are inconclusive reports on the effect of attending chlorinated swimming pools on the development of asthma and allergies. Studies on competitive and elite swimmers show that intensive swimming training, especially in chlorinated pools, can induce bronchial hyperresponsiveness and the risk of developing asthma, but this requires further research.

Introduction: Testicular cancer is the most common malignancy among men in the 20-44 age group. Most of the incidence is testicular germ cell tumor. In recent years there has been a steady increase in the incidence of this cancer. For this reason, we analyzed available articles on environmental risk factors that may influence the incidence of increased testicular malignancies Material and methods: Review of the specialized literature in the field of urology and articles available on PubMed, searching by the keywords “testicular cancer,” “testicular cancer risk factors,” “germ cell tumor,” “tgct‘’ Aim of the study: The purpose of the study is to review the available literature and research papers regarding risk factors for malignant tumors of the testis. Summary: In recent years, there has been an increase in the incidence of testicular cancer, especially among men aged 20-44 years. The vast majority of it is germ cell tumors (TGCT). This article discusses the influence of environmental factors on the development of testicular cancer, with particular emphasis on the induction of TGCT. Studies indicate an association between exposure to trichloroethylene and other solvents and the risk of TGCT induction. The role of exposure to pesticides (especially fungicides), organic chlorine compounds, and viruses was also indicated to increase the risk of developing TGCTs,. The association of neoplasia with marijuana and tobacco use has also been studied, but needs further research. There is a need for continued research regarding heavy metals, infertility and factors related to pregnancy and the perinatal period. It is necessary to know the mechanisms that induce the process of carcinogenesis in the testis, which will enable the use of prevention and prophylaxis.

IntroductionWhile there is a call for smart and sustainable housing in general and for older adults in particular, little attention is paid to identifying the determinants of such housing and their extent of influence on the quality of life (QoL) of older adults. This study addresses the above gap by re-defining the criteria for house quality assessment, taking into account new needs of older inhabitants, while concerning digital assistive technologies.MethodsThis research uses various methods to identify and validate housing-related criteria and metrics, resulting in a transparent multi-criteria evaluation framework that accounts for the spatial needs of older adults. These include recommendations for multi-criteria decision-making method (MCDM/A), expert workshop to develop new metrics and validate sub-criteria, expert survey to prioritize criteria and sub-criteria and interviews with three employees in the construction-services sector in the Netherlands, to gain knowledge on smart and healthy environments.Results and DiscussionThe results show that age-friendliness of housing function is the most significant criterion, while availability of housing modifications for seniors most important sub-criterion. Our findings can benefit architects in designing improved age- friendly spaces, older adults in evaluating their dwellings and researchers from the field of architecture in selecting most relevant method for their study.

Introduction: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes/ENDS) are regarded by many as a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes. This article will present a review of the current knowledge regarding the effects and impact of electronic cigarettes on health and the risk of addiction in adolescents. Methods: We selected articles with an unlimited search period in several databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science and the websites of the Polish government. Only articles with free full text were included in the review. There were no restrictions based on article type. Conclusions: The increasing consumption of e-cigarettes (ENDS) among young people in Poland is emerging as a significant public health concern. The high addictive potential of nicotine, coupled with the toxicity of aerosols and the multitude of ways in which manufacturers make their products more appealing, gives rise to the risk of an increase in future patients with impaired performance in sports, and consequently with cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, as well as the necessity to combat addiction. Reducing and preventing the use of tobacco products by children and adolescents represents one of the most significant challenges currently facing the public health sector in Poland.

There are many factors influencing the condition of surgical patients. One undoubtedly important one is the nutritional status of the patient. Over the years, many guidelines have been developed to reduce malnutrition and improve the nutritional status of surgical patients. It has been proven in numerous studies that malnutrition worsens the prognosis of patients undergoing surgery. Numerous advances in many fields of medicine, such as better conservative treatment, development of surgical techniques or new surgical instruments, have contributed to improving the prognosis of patients in the postoperative period. Inadequate nutritional status is one of the main factors negatively affecting this process . Perioperative nutritional support, as part of the ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) protocol, has proven to be crucial in improving surgical outcomes . By introducing a nutritional assessment even before planned procedures, we can improve the patient's condition with oral supplements and immunomodulatory preparations. This can reduce the length of patient hospitalization and mortality. In this review, we will focus on the latest developments and available research on these issues.

Ketamine, also known as 2-(2-chlorophenyl)-2-(methylamino)-cyclohexanone, is a dissociative anesthetic that has gained popularity as a recreational substance among young people, especially in nightclubs and at parties. It acts as a noncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonist, inducing a dissociative state that manifests as catalepsy, unconsciousness and amnesia. Recreational use of ketamine and the number of illicit seizures of ketamine have increased in recent years, prompting a review of current evidence on its toxicity. Recreational ketamine use is associated with a number of toxic effects, both acute and chronic. Predominant among the acute effects are psychotic symptoms, hallucinations and aggression, which can lead to serious injuries. Chronic ketamine use leads to intractable urological problems and neuropsychiatric problems, Long-term effects also include gastrointestinal problems such as abdominal pain and liver function abnormalities. This review summarizes current evidences on the acute and chronic ketamine toxicity associated with its recreational use.

Propolis, colloquially known as "bee glue," serves as a versatile material in hive construction and defense against diseases and predators. Its chemical composition, influenced by geographic origins, comprises a myriad of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, terpenoids, and more. The study delves into the pharmacological activities of propolis, emphasizing its antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. Propolis exhibits a direct correlation between its biological activity and the quality of its chemical constituents. The antioxidant activity, attributed to flavonoids, plays a crucial role in mitigating oxidative stress and associated chronic inflammation. Furthermore, the paper discusses the therapeutic potential of propolis in various health conditions, such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, asthma, COPD, and wound healing. In diabetes, propolis shows promise in reducing blood glucose levels and insulin resistance. Its cardioprotective effects are linked to antioxidant compounds, addressing oxidative stress in cardiovascular diseases. Propolis demonstrates anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effects in respiratory conditions, providing potential relief for asthma and COPD patients. Additionally, propolis accelerates wound healing through its immunomodulatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. In conclusion, propolis emerges as a natural resource with significant potential for human health, presenting a diverse array of bioactive compounds that contribute to its therapeutic efficacy across various medical conditions. The multifaceted nature of propolis makes it a subject of growing interest for further research and exploration in the field of medicine and healthcare.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) with 11-β-hydroxylase deficiency accounts for a small percentage of the overall incidence of this disease in the population. The described case of two sisters touches on the therapeutic problems encountered during the treatment of this rare condition. The authors present the problem of selecting appropriate substitutive doses of glucocorticosteroids that will ensure good control of blood pressure and protect against the development of organ complications caused by hypertension and maintain hirsutism at an acceptable level, with as few complications of the applied treatment as possible. The article emphasizes the role of patient–physician cooperation, which is essential to achieve the therapeutic goals.

Abstract A situation of emergency involving the whole population introduces changes in the dynamics of the health services that are provided. The magnitude of these shifts should be also linked to the medical speciality within which the health benefits are delivered. The aim of the paper was to identify changes in tendencies in inpatient medical service delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic by medical specialties. On the basis of a database extracted for in-patient treatment received from the public payer, a retrospective analysis was carried out. Comparing the values of the dynamics of the services provided in each medical speciality, the period before the COVID-19 pandemic was collated to the years of the pandemic (2020–2021). In the period before COVID-19, positive patient dynamics were observed in more than half of the specialities. Between 2020 and 2021, virtually all specialties reversed the trend and negative dynamics were recorded. The dynamics in 2021 indicate a process of return to the values from 2015 to 2019. Emergency situation has affected the dynamics of healthcare provision in different specialities to various extent. The most resistant to the negative impulses of the state of emergency were the areas that are strictly organisationally and financially defined (e.g. the group of “therapeutic and drug programmes”).

Study region: Pannonian Ecoregion, Hungary. Study focus: Bridging the gap between atmospheric influences and aquatic environments, this study embarked on a comprehensive reconstruction of daily surface water temperatures across lakes and rivers within the Pannonian Ecoregion over an extensive period of 150 years (1870–2021). New hydrological insights for the region: The analysis revealed a clear warming trend in waters over the past 150 years, and majority of this warming occurred in recent three to four decades (average warming rate: 0.317 °C/decade). Seasonal patterns indicated that winter and spring exhibited faster warming rates, followed by autumn and summer. There has been a significant increase in the number, duration, and intensity of heatwaves in both lakes and rivers, particularly pronounced in the last 30–40 years, and with the rise of air temperatures, river and lake heatwaves tend to intensity. These findings underscore the escalating impact of climate change on freshwater systems in the Pannonian Ecoregion, emphasizing the urgent need for mitigation measures. As the first study on river and lake heatwaves in Hungary and one of the few studies on river heatwaves worldwide, this study will provide reference for analysing extreme thermal events in aquatic systems.

Background: First responders (FRs) are at high risk of being exposed to traumatic events in their occupational roles. Responding to critical incidents often involves exposure to life-threatening circumstances, dealing with fatalities and encountering highly stressful situations that may trigger traumatic responses. These experiences can lead to poor physical and mental health (MH) outcomes including post-traumatic stress disorder, co-morbid conditions such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, insomnia, and suicidality. Little research has explored the perspectives and experiences of FRs in dealing with occupational trauma(s) and how best to meet their health needs.Objective: This study aimed to explore FRs’ experiences of exposure to occupational trauma and its impact on their mental wellbeing. The wider objective was to investigate how FRs can be supported to access appropriate and relevant help, addressing barriers like stigma.Method: A qualitative research design using in-depth semi-structured interviews with FRs (n = 54) was adopted. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and analysed using an inductive thematic approach.Results: Themes developed were: (1) the pervasive, cumulative and salient impact of occupational trauma on MH (micro-traumas, nightmares, flashbacks and reliving experiences); (2) the demands of the job exacerbating the adverse effects of trauma (self and others); (3) insufficient support and unhelpful ways of coping following exposure to trauma (lack of psychological safety); (4) stigma and fear of judgement as barriers to MH help-seeking; and (5) need for specific, accessible and credible trauma-focused interventions and workplace support.Conclusions: The implications of these findings are discussed at the individual, service provider and organisational level, emphasising the importance of implementing a strengths-based, non-pathologising and de-stigmatising approach to trauma in the workplace as experienced by FRs. Emphasis is placed on the importance of overcoming barriers to accessing MH support and improving access to evidence-based, trauma-focused psychological interventions and workplace support.

One of the most persistent areas of difficulty in mathematics for children with learning disabilities (LDs) and difficulties is fractions. We report the development and initial testing of an intervention designed to increase access to and advancement in conceptual understanding. Our asset-based theory of change--a tested and confirmed learning trajectory of fraction concepts of students with LDs grounded in student-centered instruction--served as the basis for our multistage scientific design process. We report on foundational (i.e., a theory of change, establishment and refinement of learning trajectories, and core instructional components) and evaluative (pilot data on student outcomes) components of the intervention. The results of the study reveal positive effects of the program's fidelity and potential to improve student outcomes in school settings. The positive outcomes support continued exploration and expansion of a new framework for supplemental intervention grounded in trajectories of student learning.

Erythritol, a sugar alcohol derived from carbohydrate hydrolysis, is gaining attention for its unique properties and potential health benefits. While it occurs naturally in small quantities in certain foods, industrial production methods have made it a popular sugar substitute in various consumer products. Erythritol's sweetness coupled with its low or negligible calorie content, positions it as an attractive option for individuals seeking to manage weight or diabetes. Unlike some polyol sweeteners, erythritol's absorption in the small intestine does not lead to gastrointestinal distress, making it widely used in foods and beverages. Research indicates that erythritol's ingestion does not significantly impact serum glucose or insulin levels, making it suitable for individuals with diabetes or those managing carbohydrate intake. Moreover, erythritol shows promise in improving endothelial function and protecting against vascular complications associated with diabetes. Individuals with carbohydrate disorders or those who are overweight represent only a segment of the population that may benefit from erythritol. This sweetener also offers a spectrum of advantageous effects on oral and gastrointestinal health. However, while erythritol offers numerous potential benefits, further studies are needed to fully understand its long-term effects on the human body. This review compiles current data on erythritol's metabolism and underscores erythritol's multifaceted and beneficial potential role in health.

BackgroundHyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) treatment is used across a range of medical specialties for a variety of applications, particularly where hypoxia and inflammation are important contributors. Because of its hypoxia-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects HBO2 may be useful for new indications not currently approved by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society. Identifying these new applications for HBO2 is difficult because individual centers may only treat a few cases and not track the outcomes consistently. The web-based International Multicenter Registry for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy captures prospective outcome data for patients treated with HBO2 therapy. These data can then be used to identify new potential applications for HBO2, which has relevance for a range of medical specialties. ObjectiveAlthough hyperbaric medicine has established indications, new ones continue to emerge. One objective of this registry study was to identify cases where HBO2 has been used for conditions falling outside of current Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society–approved indications and present outcome data for them. MethodsThis descriptive study used data from a web-based, multicenter, international registry of patients treated with HBO2. Participating centers agree to collect data on all patients treated using standard outcome measures, and individual centers send deidentified data to the central registry. HBO2 treatment programs in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia participate. Demographic, outcome, complication, and treatment data, including pre- and posttreatment quality of life questionnaires (EQ-5D-5L) were collected for individuals referred for HBO2 treatment. ResultsOut of 9726 patient entries, 378 (3.89%) individuals were treated for 45 emerging indications. Post–COVID-19 condition (PCC; also known as postacute sequelae of COVID-19; 149/378, 39.4%), ulcerative colitis (47/378, 12.4%), and Crohn disease (40/378, 10.6%) accounted for 62.4% (n=236) of the total cases. Calciphylaxis (20/378, 5.3%), frostbite (18/378, 4.8%), and peripheral vascular disease–related wounds (12/378, 3.2%) accounted for a further 13.2% (n=50). Rivers worldwide are warming due to the impact of climate change and human interventions. This study investigated river heatwaves in the Vistula River Basin, one of the largest river systems in Europe using long-term observed daily river water temperatures from the past 30 years (1991–2020). The results showed that river heatwaves are increased in frequency and intensity in the Vistula River Basin. The total number of river heatwaves showed clear increasing trend with an average rate of 1.400 times/decade, the duration of river heatwaves increased at an average rate of 14.506 days/decade, and the cumulative intensity of river heatwaves increased at an average rate of 53.169 °C/decade. The Mann-Kendall (MK) test was also employed, showing statistically significant increasing trends in the total number, duration, and intensity of heatwaves for all rivers, including the main watercourse of the Vistula River and its tributaries, with few exceptions. Air temperature is the major controller of river heatwaves for each hydrological station, and with the increase of air temperatures, river heatwaves will increase in frequency and intensity. Another impacting factor is flow, and with the increase of flow, river heatwaves tend to decrease in number, duration and intensity. The results suggested that mitigation measures shall be taken to reduce the effect of climate change on river systems.

Diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the world. There are several types of it with different etiologies. The most common type of diabetes is type 2. Every year, DM2 contributes to the deaths of millions of people worldwide. Its complications pose a huge health as well as economic problem. Nowadays, pharmaceutical companies are outdoing themselves in synthesizing new drugs, using newer and newer mechanisms of action. This meets with the approval of patients – It is easier to take a pill instead of changing your lifestyle. However, it is worth considering and rethinking the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes. How to effectively reduce the risk of pre-diabetes or developing DM2? In this research study, we will try to give an insight into how important our body's muscle tissue is in the context of diabetes and why it is important to take care of its proper amount and condition. It is hoped that paying attention to this aspect in relation to diabetes will allow for a less invasive and more effective treatment of carbohydrate disorders and contribute to benefiting from the other health effects of developing proper skeletal muscle tissue in the human body.

An influential model of spatial attention postulates three main attention-orienting mechanisms: disengagement, shifting, and engagement. Early research linked disengagement deficits with superior parietal damage, regardless of hemisphere or presence of spatial neglect. Subsequent studies supported the involvement of more ventral parietal regions, especially in the right hemisphere, and linked spatial neglect to deficient disengagement from ipsilateral cues. However, previous lesion studies faced serious limitations, such as small sample sizes and the lack of brain-injured controls without neglect. Additionally, some studies employed symbolic cues or used long cue-target intervals, which may fail to reveal impaired disengagement. We here used a machine-learning approach to conduct lesion-symptom mapping (LSM) on 89 patients with focal cerebral lesions to the left (LH) or right (RH) cerebral hemisphere. A group of 54 healthy participants served as controls. The paradigm used to uncover disengagement deficits employed non-predictive cues presented in the visual periphery and at short cue-target intervals, targeting exogenous attention. The main factors of interest were group (healthy participants, LH, RH), target position (left, right hemifield) and cue validity (valid, invalid). LSM-analyses were performed on two indices: the validity effect, computed as the absolute difference between reaction times (RTs) following invalid compared to valid cues, and the disengagement deficit, determined by the difference between contralesional and ipsilesional validity effects. While LH patients showed general slowing of RTs to contralesional targets, only RH patients exhibited a disengagement deficit from ipsilesional cues. LSM associated the validity effect with a right lateral frontal cluster, which additionally affected subcortical white matter of the right arcuate fasciculus, the corticothalamic pathway, and the superior longitudinal fasciculus. In contrast, the disengagement deficit was related to damage involving the right temporoparietal junction. Thus, our results support the crucial role of right inferior parietal and posterior temporal regions for attentional disengagement, but also emphasize the importance of lateral frontal regions, for the reorienting of attention.

Introduction: The widespread prevalence of chronic rhinitis necessitates the search for effective treatment methods. Modern type of medicine is biological treatment. Pathomechanism of AR is based on lymphocytes Th-2 reaction and connected with that cascade of effects. Biological treatment in the form of monoclonal antibodies blocks interleukins or immunoglobulin E signaling and leads to decrease in inflammatory reaction. Mechanism of action of these drugs and short period of use in AR requires patients to meet the including criteria and is usually used after other treatment options have run out. Taking under consideration the amount of patients suffering from AR and the impact on the quality of life indicates that there is still a need for new drugs and using drugs which are useful in similar diseases. Purpose of the work: This study aims to review and evaluate biological drugs used or having the potential to be used in the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR), including: omalizumab, dupilumab, mepolizumab, reslizumab and the possibility of their use on a wider scale in the future. Materials and methods: An analysis of research papers available on PubMed and Google Scholar was undertaken using the following keywords: chronic rhinitis with nasal polyps; immunotherapy; monoclonal antibodies; allergic rhinitis; Quality of Life in rhinitis; omalizumab; dupilumab; mepolizumab; reslizumab; biological treatment during pregnancy; Results: The use of biological drugs in AR results in a significant improvement in symptom control and an increase in quality of life. This option can be an effective form of treatment for nasal polyps, reducing the risk of needing sinus surgery. However, the criteria for using these drugs are still very limiting, due to the lack of specific biomarkers that could early indicate a high chance of success. Biological drugs seem to be a great opportunity and a worthwhile possibility in the treatment of people with chronic allergic rhinitis.

Neurobehavioral studies have provided evidence for the effectiveness of anodal tDCS on language production, by stimulation of the left Inferior Frontal Gyrus (IFG) or of left Temporo-Parietal Junction (TPJ). However, tDCS is currently not used in clinical practice outside of trials, because behavioral effects have been inconsistent and underlying neural effects unclear. Here, we propose to elucidate the neural correlates of verb and noun learning and to determine if they can be modulated with anodal high-definition (HD) tDCS stimulation. Thirty-six neurotypical participants were randomly allocated to anodal HD-tDCS over either the left IFG, the left TPJ, or sham stimulation. On day one, participants performed a naming task (pre-test). On day two, participants underwent a new-word learning task with rare nouns and verbs concurrently to HD-tDCS for 20 min. The third day consisted of a post-test of naming performance. EEG was recorded at rest and during naming on each day. Verb learning was significantly facilitated by left IFG stimulation. HD-tDCS over the left IFG enhanced functional connectivity between the left IFG and TPJ and this correlated with improved learning. HD-tDCS over the left TPJ enabled stronger local activation of the stimulated area (as indexed by greater alpha and beta-band power decrease) during naming, but this did not translate into better learning. Thus, tDCS can induce local activation or modulation of network interactions. Only the enhancement of network interactions, but not the increase in local activation, leads to robust improvement of word learning. This emphasizes the need to develop new neuromodulation methods influencing network interactions. Our study suggests that this may be achieved through behavioral activation of one area and concomitant activation of another area with HD-tDCS.
