In this paper, the impact of misalignments on visible-light vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) links is examined. By means of modeling and simulation, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the V2V channel formed by two vehicles driving in a platoon arrangement on a two-lane road with straight and curved sections is obtained and analyzed. Results show that misalignments caused by road curves can greatly reduce the SNR and, therefore, the link range. However, the SNR reduction can be mitigated using curve adaptive headlights and link range can be increased using higher FOVs.

In this work, we present a complete process to obtain a pure phase modulator based on a twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TNLCD). We first describe a simple technique for measuring the physical parameters of each cell of this device with no ambiguities, and we use them to build a simplified model of the display based on the Jones matrix theory. Then, after selecting a proper optical system for pure phase modulation, an optimal configuration of the system is searched using a numerical algorithm. This procedure drastically reduces the voluminous experimental stage this task normally requires. The presented method is verified through experimental results, finding an excellent agreement between the measurements and the predicted data. Universidad de Málaga. En este trabajo, se presenta un simulador de modulación de fase espacial para su uso en comunicaciones ópticas de espacio libre. El simulador está basado en dispositivos TNLCD (Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Display). En primer lugar, se examinan las características y propiedades de los cristales líquidos como medios uniáxicos birrefrigentes. Posteriormente, mediante un modelo analítico simple, se caracterizan los diferentes elementos ópticos de un modulador espacial de luz (SLM) en términos de sus correspondientes matrices de Jones. Las expresiones deducidas en esta caracterización se utilizan en la herramienta de simulación para obtener la diferencia de fase espacial y la transmitancia producida por el SLM. Finalmente, el funcionamiento del simulador se ha verificado comparando resultados teóricos y de simulación para diferentes excitaciones de prueba Universidad de Málaga. En esta contribución se presenta el análisis del índice de escintilación y su relación con los parámetros físicos de la turbulencia en el canal óptico atmosférico, suponiendo que el centelleo inducido por la turbulencia atmosférica es modelado mediante la distribución estadística Málaga o, también denominada M. La principal novedad de este estudio es el establecimiento de expresiones analíticas directas para el cálculo de los parámetros estadísticos de la irradiancia óptica aleatoria recibida a partir de los que definen el comportamiento de la turbulencia atmosférica, mediante la descomposición del canal óptico en un número finito de sub-canales modelados mediante la distribución K-Generalizada y las similitudes que esta última presenta con la distribución Gamma-Gamma presentada en la bibliografía. En este sentido, se proporcionan expresiones cerradas para el cálculo del índice de centelleo en un canal modelado con la distribución M, tanto para cada uno de los sub-canales mencionados como para el efecto atmosférico en su conjunto, lo que conduce a un procedimiento simple para la predicción del comportamiento del enlace de comunicaciones bajo cualquier condición de turbulencia. A generalization of the Málaga atmospheric optical communications links treated as a finite number of generalized-K distributed sub-channels is analyzed in terms of outage probability and outage rate when its β parameter belongs to the set of real numbers. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first time that β ε ℜ is considered. The new analytical expressions derived in this paper lead to a new physical and more realistic interpretation of atmospheric optical links, especially in terms of performance.

A new and generalized statistical model, called Málaga distribution (M distribution), has been derived recently to characterize the irradiance fluctuations of an unbounded optical wave front propagating through a turbulent medium under all irradiance fluctuation conditions. As great advantages associated to that model, we can indicate that it is written in a simple tractable closed-form expression and that it is able to unify most of the proposed statistical models for free-space optical communications derived until now in the scientific literature. Based on that Málaga model, we have analyzed in this paper the role of the detection threshold in a free-space optical system employing an on-off keying modulation technique and involved in different scenarios, and taking into account the extinction ratio associated to the employed laser. First we have derived some analytical expressions for the lower-bound performance of the free-space optical system with the light intensity fading induced by turbulence obtained when the additive white Gaussian noise is not present in the system. Then, we have analyzed the optimal threshold in the system and how it changes when atmospheric conditions vary. Finally, a closed form expression for the bit error rate of that system is derived.

In this paper, the performance analysis of atmospheric optical communications links is analyzed in terms of the average bit error rate. To this end, the optical irradiance scintillation due to the turbulence effects is modeled by a generalization of the M´alaga or M distribution. In particular, the behavior of the atmospheric optical channel is treated as a superposition of a finite number of Generalized-K distributed sub-channels, controlled by a discrete Negative-Binomial distribution dependent on the turbulence parameters. Unlike other studies, here, the closed-form mathematical expressions for the average bit error rate for each Generalized-K sub-channel, in which the turbulence parameters are real numbers, are provided, together with the closed-form expression of the whole optical link. Theses new expressions are a valuable tool for analysing the performance of atmospheric optical links.

En esta comunicación, ser realiza un estudio de parámetros importantes en la caracterización del comportamiento de enlaces de comunicaciones ópticas atmosféricas. En este sentido, se han derivado expresiones matemáticas cerradas para la capacidad ergódica y la probabilidad de bloqueo para un enlace de comunicaciones ópticas que hace uso de la clásica modulación de intensidad con detección directa (IM/DD), suponiendo propagación sin restricciones del frente de onda de la señal óptica y asumiendo que el fenómeno de escintilación óptica es modelada con la recién definida distribución de turbulencia M o también denominada Málaga, origen del equipo de investigadores que lo ha propuesto. El comportamiento de dichos parámetros de calidad se analizará en función de los parámetros característicos de esta novedosa distribución estadística.
