This paper proposes a joint gain and input design method for observer-based asymptotic active fault diagnosis, which is based on a newly-defined notion named the excluding degree of the origin from a zonotope. Using the excluding degree, a quantitative specification is obtained to characterize the performance of set-based robust fault diagnosis. Furthermore, a single gain design method and a joint gain and input design method are proposed, respectively. This is the first work to achieve a joint observer gain and input design for set-based active fault diagnosis. Compared with the existing methods that design gains and input separately, the proposed joint gain and input design method has advantages to exploit the fault diagnosis potential of observer-based schemes. Finally, several examples are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Cyberphysical systems (CPSs) integrate controllers, sensors, actuators, and communication networks. Tight integration with communication networks makes CPSs vulnerable to cyberattacks. In this paper, we investigate the impact of denial of service (DoS) attack on the stability of cyber physical systems by considering the transmission control protocol (TCP) and extract a sufficient stability condition in linear matrix inequality (LMI) form. To this end, we model the TCP-CPS under DoS attack as a switching LPV time delay system by using the Markov jump model. Then, we design parameter dependent stabilizing controller for CPS under DoS attack, by considering the network parameters.

This article presents a leak localization methodology based on state estimation and learning. The first is handled by an interpolation scheme, whereas dictionary learning is considered for the second stage. The novel proposed interpolation technique exploits the physics of the interconnections between hydraulic heads of neighboring nodes in water distribution networks. Additionally, residuals are directly interpolated instead of hydraulic head values. The results of applying the proposed method to a well-known case study (Modena) demonstrated the improvements of the new interpolation method with respect to a state-of-the-art approach, both in terms of interpolation error (considering state and residual estimation) and posterior localization.

Greenhouse is an important protected horticulture system for feeding the world with enough fresh food. However, to maintain an ideal growing climate in a greenhouse requires resources and operational costs. In order to achieve economical and sustainable crop growth, efficient climate control of greenhouse production becomes essential. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is the most commonly used approach in the scientific literature for greenhouse climate control. However, with the developments of sensing and computing techniques, reinforcement learning (RL) is getting increasing attention recently. With each control method having its own way to state the control problem, define control goals, and seek for optimal control actions, MPC and RL are representatives of model-based and learning-based control approaches, respectively. Although researchers have applied certain forms of MPC and RL to control the greenhouse climate, very few effort has been allocated to analyze connections, differences, pros and cons between MPC and RL either from a mathematical or performance perspective. Therefore, this paper will 1) propose MPC and RL approaches for greenhouse climate control in an unified framework; 2) analyze connections and differences between MPC and RL from a mathematical perspective; 3) compare performance of MPC and RL in a simulation study and afterwards present and interpret comparative results into insights for the application of the different control approaches in different scenarios.

A Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) strategy aimed at controlling a small-scale car model for autonomous racing competitions is presented in this paper. The proposed control strategy is concerned with minimizing the lap time while keeping the vehicle within track boundaries. The optimization problem considers both the vehicle's actuation limits and the lateral and longitudinal forces acting on the car modeled through the Pacejka's magic formula and a simple drivetrain model. Furthermore, the approach allows to safely race on a track populated by static obstacles generating collision-free trajectories and tracking them while enhancing the lap timing performance. Gazebo simulations using the F1/10 simulator showcase the feasibility and validity of the proposed control strategy. This paper presents an approach to ensure conditions on Variable Impedance Controllers through the off-line tuning of the parameters involved in its description. In particular, we prove its application to term modulations defined by a Learning from Demonstration technique. This is performed through the assessment of conditions regarding safety and performance, which encompass heuristics and constraints in the form of Linear Matrix Inequalities. Latter ones allow to define a convex optimisation problem to analyse their fulfilment, and require a polytopic description of the VIC, in this case, obtained from its formulation as a discrete-time Linear Parameter Varying system. With respect to the current state-of-art, this approach only limits the term definition obtained by the Learning from Demonstration technique to be continuous and function of exogenous signals, i.e. external variables to the robot. Therefore, using a solution-search method, the most suitable set of parameters according to assessment criteria can be obtained. Using a 7-DoF Kinova Gen3 manipulator, validation and comparison against solutions with relaxed conditions are performed. The method is applied to generate Variable Impedance Controllers for a pulley belt looping task, inspired by the Assembly Challenge for Industrial Robotics in World Robot Summit 2018, to reduce the exerted force with respect to a standard (constant) Impedance Controller. In this paper, we propose a data-driven leak localization method for water distribution networks (WDNs) which combines two complementary approaches: graph-based interpolation and dictionary classification. The former estimates the complete WDN hydraulic state (i.e., hydraulic heads) from real measurements at certain nodes and the network graph. Then, these actual measurements, together with a subset of valuable estimated states, are used to feed and train the dictionary learning scheme. Thus, the meshing of these two methods is explored, showing that its performance is superior to either approach alone, even deriving different mechanisms to increase its resilience to classical problems (e.g., dimensionality, interpolation errors, etc.). The approach is validated using the L-TOWN benchmark proposed at BattLeDIM2020.

This paper proposes a hierarchical decentralized reference governor for constrained cascade systems. The reference governor (RG) approach is reformulated in terms of receding horizon strategy such that a locally receding horizon optimization is obtained for each subsystem with a pre-established prediction horizon. The algorithm guarantees that not only the nominal overall closed-loop system without any constraint is recoverable but also the state and control constraints are satisfied in transient conditions. Also, considering unfeasible reference signals, the output of any subsystem goes locally to the nearest feasible value. The proposed dynamic constraint tightening strategy uses a receding horizon to reduce the conservatism of conventional robust RGs. Moreover, a decentralized implementation of the algorithms used to compute tightened constraints and output admissible sets is introduced that allow to deal with large scale systems. Furthermore, a set of dynamic constraints are presented to preserve recursive feasibility of distributed optimization problem. Feasibility, stability, convergence, and robust constraint satisfaction of the proposed algorithm are also demonstrated. In urban drainage systems (UDS), a proven method for reducing the combined sewer overflow (CSO) pollution is real-time control (RTC) based on model predictive control (MPC). MPC methodologies for RTC of UDSs in the literature rely on the computation of the optimal control strategies based on deterministic rain forecast. However, in reality, uncertainties exist in rainfall forecasts which affect severely accuracy of computing the optimal control strategies. Under this context, this work aims to focus on the uncertainty associated with the rainfall forecasting and its effects. One option is to use stochastic information about the rain events in the controller; in the case of using MPC methods, the class called stochastic MPC is available, including several approaches such as the chance-constrained MPC method. In this study, we apply stochastic MPC to the UDS using the chance-constrained method. Moreover, we also compare the operational behavior of both the classical MPC with perfect forecast and the chance-constrained MPC based on different stochastic scenarios of the rain forecast. In this paper, we present an effective online tube-based model predictive control (T-MPC) solution for autonomous driving that aims at improving the computational load while ensuring robust stability and performance in fast and disturbed scenarios. We focus on reformulating the non-linear original problem into a pseudo-linear problem by transforming the non-linear vehicle equations to be expressed in a Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) form. An scheme composed by a nominal controller and a corrective local controller is propossed. First, the local controller is designed as a polytopic LPV-H$_{\infty}$ controller able to reject external disturbances. Moreover, a finite number of accurate reachable sets, also called tube, are computed online using zonotopes taking into account the system dynamics, the local controller and the diturbance-uncertainty bounds considered. Second, the nominal controller is designed as an MPC where the LPV vehicle model is used to speed up the computational time while keeping accurate vehicle representation. Employing reachability theory with zonotopes, the MPC changes online its state and input constraints to ensure robust feasibility and stability under exhogenous disturbances. Finally, we test the presented scheme and compare the local controller performance against the LQR design as state of the art approach. We demonstrate its effectiveness in a disturbed fast driving scenario being able to reject strong exogenous disturbances and fulfilling imposed constraints at a very reduced computational cost.

In this paper, the Model Predictive Control (MPC) and Moving Horizon Estimator (MHE) strategies using a data-driven approach to learn a Takagi-Sugeno (TS) representation of the vehicle dynamics are proposed to solve autonomous driving control problems in real-time. To address the TS modeling, we use the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) approach to obtain a set of polytopic-based linear representations as well as a set of membership functions relating in a non-linear way the different linear subsystems. The proposed control approach is provided by racing-based references of an external planner and estimations from the MHE offering a high driving performance in racing mode. Fault detection and isolation in water distribution networks is an active topic due to its model's mathematical complexity and increased data availability through sensor placement. Here we simplify the model by offering a data driven alternative that takes the network topology into account when performing sensor placement and then proceeds to build a network model through online dictionary learning based on the incoming sensor data. Online learning is fast and allows tackling large networks as it processes small batches of signals at a time and has the benefit of continuous integration of new data into the existing network model, be it in the beginning for training or in production when new data samples are encountered. In this work, a novel approach is presented to solve the problem of tracking trajectories in autonomous vehicles. This approach is based on the use of a cascade control where the external loop solves the position control using a novel Takagi Sugeno - Model Predictive Control (TS-MPC) approach and the internal loop is in charge of the dynamic control of the vehicle using a Takagi Sugeno - Linear Quadratic Regulator technique designed via Linear Matrix Inequalities (TS-LMI-LQR). Both techniques use a TS representation of the kinematic and dynamic models of the vehicle. In addition, a novel Takagi Sugeno estimator - Moving Horizon Estimator - Unknown Input Observer (TS-MHE-UIO) is presented. This method estimates the dynamic states of the vehicle optimally as well as the force of friction acting on the vehicle that is used to reduce the control efforts. The innovative contribution of the TS-MPC and TS-MHE-UIO techniques is that using the TS model formulation of the vehicle allows us to solve the nonlinear problem as if it were linear, reducing computation times by 40-50 times. To demonstrate the potential of the TS-MPC we propose a comparison between three methods of solving the kinematic control problem: using the non-linear MPC formulation (NL-MPC), using TS-MPC without updating the prediction model and using updated TS-MPC with the references of the planner.

This work proposes a solution for the longitudinal and lateral control problem of urban autonomous vehicles using a gain scheduling LPV control approach. Using the kinematic and dynamic vehicle models, a linear parameter varying (LPV) representation is adopted and a cascade control methodology is proposed for controlling both vehicle behaviours. In particular, for the control design, the use of both models separately lead to solve two LPV LMI-LQR problems. Furthermore, to achieve the desired levels of performance, an approach based on cascade design of the the kinematic and dynamic controllers has been proposed. This cascade control scheme is based on the idea that the dynamic closed loop behaviour is designed to be faster than the kinematic closed loop one. The obtained gain scheduling LPV control approach, jointly with a trajectory generation module, has presented suitable results in a simulated city driving scenario.

This paper presents the comparison of two non-linear model-based control strategies for autonomous cars. A control oriented model of vehicle based on a bicycle model is used. The two control strategies use a model reference approach. Using this approach, the error dynamics model is developed. Both controllers receive as input the longitudinal, lateral and orientation errors generating as control outputs the steering angle and the velocity of the vehicle. The first control approach is based on a non-linear control law that is designed by means of the Lyapunov direct approach. The second approach is based on a sliding mode-control that defines a set of sliding surfaces over which the error trajectories will converge. The main advantage of the sliding-control technique is the robustness against non-linearities and parametric uncertainties in the model. However, the main drawback of first order sliding mode is the chattering, so it has been implemented a high order sliding mode control. To test and compare the proposed control strategies, different path following scenarios are used in simulation.
