Many books have been written on the Second Punic War and Hannibal in particular but few give much space to his campaigns in the years from 213 203 BC. Most studies concentrate on Hannibals series of stunning victories in the early stages of the war, culminating at Cannae in 216 BC, then refocus on the activities of his nemesis,Scipio Africanus, in Spain until the two meet in the final showdown at Zama. The two decades between the end of the First Punic War and the beginning of the Second represent a key period in the development of Romes imperial ambitions, both within Italy and beyond. Within Italy, Rome faced an invasion of Gauls from Northern Italy, which threatened the very existence of the Roman state. Hannibal was a Punic Carthaginian military commander, generally considered one of the greatest military commanders in history. His father, Hamilcar Barca, was the leading Carthaginian commander during the First Punic War, his younger brothers were Mago and Hasdrubal, and he was brother-in-law to Hasdrubal the Fair. Hannibal lived during a period of great tension in the Mediterranean, when the Roman Republic established its supremacy over other great powers such as Carthage, the Hellenistic kingdoms of Macedon, Syracuse, and the Seleucid empire. 'By the end of the First Punic War (264–241 BC), the Romans had reduced the capital city of the Carthaginian Empire to a heap of ashes and destroyed its culture, emphatically quoshing their enemy. However, in 219 BC Hannibal (247–183 BC), the eldest son of the charismatic general Hamilcar Barca (d. 229 BC), began the Second Punic War (218–201 BC), and was so successful that he threatened to destroy Roman power completely. Hannibal was a cool, self-contained, locked-in hero, and can arguably lay claim to being the greatest general of antiquity – although Hannibal actually rated himself ‘third'after Alexander the Great and Pyrrhos of Epeiros. His victories were certainly more impressive than those of Pyrrhos, and his strategic focus was clearer. Similarly, although Alexander achieved spectacular conquests, he did so using the superb Macedonian army created by his father, Philip II of Macedon, whereas Hannibal achieved his continuous run of successes with an ad-hoc collection of polyglot mercenaries. Hannibal had learnt his professionalism and confidence as a fighting soldier from his father, notably the ability to maintain himself and his army in a foreign land for so many years.
