During the 2011 archaeological excavations at the Mali Grad site in Braničevo, a set of at least 16 vessels made of translucent dark-purple glass and decorated with marvered opaque white trails was discovered. This unique glass assemblage, consisting of at least eight bowls, three bottles, two cylindrical flasks and three further vessels which can be possibly attributed to flasks, was found in the most significant archaeological context in the urban centre of Braničevo, in the layer above the floor in House No 4. According to other archaeological finds from the same context, coins in particular, the glass vessel set is dated to the 12th century. Importantly, the finds from Braničevo are so far the earliest securely-dated vessels of this type in the territory of the Byzantine Empire, post-dating the reestablishment of its control over the Balkan Peninsula in the 11th century. This document is a government generated Section 106 report consisting of a historic property inventory and an assessment of adverse effects associated with the A5 Powerline Replacement Project. The purpose of the document is to compile any prior or current studies performed in support of the A5 Powerline replacement project as a single Section 106 report. This report provides the information needed by the California State Historic Preservation Officer to concur on the project findings and determinations for individual resources as presented by the Vandenberg Air Force Base Cultural Resource Manager. The report specifically examines project impacts and/or avoidance strategies for twenty-seven archaeological sites; CA-SBA-592, -702, -775, -776, -1779, -2086, -2569H, -2570, -2571, -2883, -2884, -2885, -2886, -2887, -2888, -2889, -2894, -3213, -3215, -3232, -3348, -3376, -3527H, -3552H, -3560H, -3747, -3748.

Between April 15 and June 14, 1993, Archaeological Research Services, Inc. performed a cultural resources survey of State Route 88 (the Apache Trail). The right-of-way varies from 66 to 200 feet, but construction as-builts were not available. Therefore, the Arizona Department of Transportation requested that a 200 foot wide right-of-way be surveyed for the entire project length unless clearly marked property boundaries or other right-of-way indications were present. The 17.5 mile long survey corridor crosses lands owned by the Arizona Department of Transportation, and sections of Arizona Department of Transportation right-of-way across Bureau of Land Management lands. That segment of State Route 88 on Tonto National Forest lands was constructed through the provisions of a Special Use Permit issued to the Arizona Department of Transportation by Tonto National Forest. The survey was conducted under the conditions and authority of a Tonto National Forest special use permit issued to Archaeological Research Services, Inc. on 2/17/93, Arizona State Museum general permit number 93-11, and Bureau of Land Management permit number AZ-000054 issued 10/13/90 (fieldwork authorization number PDO-93-5, 3/23/93). The project area encompasses approximately 424.24 acres, of which approximately, 371.21 were actually surveyed when the existing paved surface of State Route 88 is excluded. The Arizona Department of Transportation requested the survey (Arizona Department of Transportation Project No. STP-952-4(1), Tracs PN 195 H3275 01C) in anticipation of a proposed pavement preservation project. Archaeological Research Services performed a Class III (Intensive Field Inventory) survey in order to locate and record any cultural resources that could be disturbed as a result of the proposed undertaking. This study provides descriptions and National Register eligibility evaluations for cultural resources encountered during the survey. As a result of the survey, 22 archaeological sites (4 previously recorded, 18 newly recorded) and 49 isolated artifact occurrences or cultural features were recorded (or rerecorded or relocated). This is the second revision of this document, with earlier versions completed 29 June 1993 and 15 November 1994.

The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation), United States Department of the Interior, was in the initial stages of the Water Management Project designed to bring Central Arizona Project water to the Gila River Indian Community (GRIC). Under terms of a contract signed in 1992 with the GRIC, facilities designed and constructed by Reclamation would deliver 173,000 acre-feet of water annually onto the reservation. Federal law mandates consideration of potential impacts of such projects upon cultural resources and requires that necessary and appropriate steps be taken to mitigate those impacts. In accordance with these laws, Reclamation did a complete inventory of all cultural resources that may fall within the project area. Data resulting from this inventory provided the basis for assessment of the significance of the resources and for the design of plans to mitigate potential impacts to them. Two survey areas in which a water delivery system and associated features (such as dikes) will be constructed were identified by Reclamation. Broad survey areas were defined so the location of eligible sites would be known before specific project design began. In total, 180 sites were identified and recorded during survey. These sites include possible Archaic period materials, a wide range of prehistoric Hohokam site types representing all periods of the Hohokam sequence, possible Protohistoric manifestations, and numerous Historic Pima sites of varying ages. The report consists of two volumes. Volume 1 contains background information; consideration of survey and recording methods; analyses, evaluation, and interpretation of collected data; and recommendations for future treatment of discovered sites. In 1978, the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) directed the Museum of Northern Arizona (MNA) to complete an intensive archaeological survey of the proposed alignment for the Salt-Gila Aqueduct, a feature of the Central Arizona Project. The survey area was 11,115 acres and included the 60 mile-long transmission line (with a typical width of 200 meters), three proposed utility line locations, one flood retention dike location, 11 possible spoil or realignment areas, and a subsidence well. Seventy archaeological sites were recorded during this survey, 25 of which were incorporated into 2 archaeological districts. Following pedestrian survey, the MNA also conducted archaeological testing at selected sites to evaluate their eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Both districts and nearly all of the sites were evaluated as significant because of the scientific data they could be expected to yield. The survey had two general goals: 1) to assess the significance of archaeological resources in the project area and to recommend ways of mitigating adverse impacts to them which might result from construction and 2) to generate and synthesize data that would significantly enhance scientific knowledge about the project area, specifically about the use of the area through time. This report addresses the first goal and provides a plan to mitigate the adverse impacts to NRHP eligible properties that might arise from construction.The synthetic report that addresses the second goal can be found at tDAR ID 53594.

Since May, 1975, the Museum of Northern Arizona, Department of Anthropology (hereafter "Museum"), has conducted archaeological investigations for the Salt River Project - Coronado Generating Station, Coronado-Dinosaur Transmission System, North End Project. This work, supported by contractual agreement, has consisted of an intensive archaeological survey of the proposed right-of-way, from Sta. 0+00 - Sta. 3874+21, and a realignment around Sta. 1748+30 to Sta. 2375+50, and the analysis and report preparation associated with the data collected during the fieldwork. The Museum has used the necessary permits to conduct these investigations. This report details the Museum's involvement in this project, provides a statement for management purposes for Salt River Project, discusses the field methods employed, examines the regional archaeological conditions, including the cultural resources present along the transmission line, broadly outlines proposals for mitigations, and makes clearance recommendations based on a regional mitigation approach, as well as on the potential for avoiding archaeological sites. This document includes contributions by Dorothy M. Goddard, Patricia H. Stein, Jeannette Dickerson, and Claudia Chang.

15 mi of Extra High Voltage transmission line corridor, 2 mi of access road, and 0.9 mi of 115kV transmission line from the Silverking Substation were surveyed for archaeological resources by the Museum of Northern Arizona in April, 1978. Twelve prehistoric and historic Anglo-American affiliation archaeological sites were identified along the EHV corridor between the Silverking Substation and the Tonto National Forest boundary. An isolated recent feature, not given a site designation, was found on the proposed access road alignment. No sites were found on the 115kV alignment. The report describes the survey and its results and makes detailed archaeological clearance recommendations for the surveyed impact areas. Archaeological clearance is recommended for all surveyed areas except for the actual areas of the 12 recorded sites in the EHV corridor.

Archaeological Consulting Services (ACS) conducted an archaeological survey of two major Arizona river crossings along the proposed route of the All-American Pipeline at the request of Dr. Ed Weil, Cultural Resources Manager, Applied Conservation Technology (ACT). ACT is coordinating the entire cultural resource effort along this proposed pipeline from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Ocean and has subcontracted with ACS to undertake the Arizona portion of the route. Because the placement of the river crossings is important in determining the location of the line, and because they are located on private land, they were surveyed at an early stage in the project's development. The two crossings, one on the Gila River and the other on the San Pedro River, are over 100 miles apart and present very different cultural resource situations, thus they will be treated separately. This record contains a draft report.

At the request of Judith Imhoff of the Environmental Management Department of Arizona Public Service Company, Archaeological Consulting Services (ACS) initiated a cultural resource survey for the proposed 230 kV transmission line extension in the vicinity of the Kyrene Steam Power Plant. Dr. Richard W. Effland and Margerie Green of ACS served as co-principal investigators and field directors for the project. Johna Hutira and Shereen Lerner assisted in the field investigation. The purpose of this investigation is to furnish Arizona Public Service Company with information and recommendations related to potential impacts to cultural resources which might result from this proposed development.

At the request of The Salt River Project, archeologists from the Museum of Northern Arizona surveyed 24 tower locations and their associated access roads for the 7.5 mile segment of the Coronado-Silverking 500 kV transmission line in the Sitgreaves National Forest. The request for the survey came from Bettina Rosenberg, archeological administrator for The Salt River Project, in a letter dated January 12, 1978. The Coronado-Silverking transmission line is the main conduit to the Phoenix metropolitan area for power generated at Coronado Station. Beginning at Coronado Station northeast of St. Johns, the transmission line shares a west running corridor with a Coronado-Cholla Station 500 kV "back-up" line. Northwest of Snowflake, the lines separate and the Silverking line continues West, entering the Sitgreaves National Forest. The 7.5 mile survey segment is the portion of the 200 feet wide Silverking line corridor between the Sitgreaves National Forest boundary on the east and the joint corridor on the west. Museum archeologists initially surveyed the entire 7.5 mile long, 200 feet wide corridor in December, 1977. During the December work, 23 archeological sites were discovered and recorded. The Museum performed the original corridor survey to provide archeological data for tower placement planning by Salt River Project. The purpose of the present survey is to assess the potential impacts of tower access and construction, and of cable stringing. Defined by the Sitgreaves National Forest in their Cultural Resources Plan for Coronado Project, the impact zones of the Silverking line are a 200 feet radius around each tower hub, the access roadway plus a 50 feet buffer on either side, and the entire tensioning sites plus a 50 feet surrounding buffer. The present survey required 3 days to complete, beginning on January 28, and ending on January 30, 1978. Six additional sites were discovered, mostly within or near the initial access road impact zones. In each case, the road corridors were restricted to avoid the archeological remains. One site, found within the previously surveyed corridor, was defined during a reassessment of a previously recorded site. According to the guidelines agreed upon between the Sitgreaves National Forest and the Salt River Project, no sites found during this or the previous survey will suffer direct impact from construction of the Coronado-Silverking line. There are particular tower locations where extreme caution must be exercised, however, during construction, and the Museum recommends that earthmoving, and in a few cases tower erection, be monitored rigorously by a professional archeologist.

The Indian Bend Wash survey was conducted by Arizona State Museum in accordance with the requirements of a "Scope Work" developed by the Office of Arid Land Studies (University of Arizona) and the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. The purpose of the survey was to locate archaeological resources within the limits of the proposed Indian Bend Wash flood control project area, to evaluate the impact of the project on the resources, and to recommend measures for lessening the impact on the local archaeology.
