We present findings of 3D filamentary structures in the Smith Cloud, a high-velocity cloud (HVC) located at $l=38^{\circ}$, $b=-13^{\circ}$. We use data from the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array \ion{H}{i} (GALFA-\ion{H}{i}) along with our new filament detection algorithm, \texttt{fil3d}, to characterize these structures. In this paper, we also discuss how different input parameters affect the output of \texttt{fil3d}. We study filaments in the local ISM and compare them to those found in the Smith Cloud. Based on thermal linewidth estimations we find supporting evidence that the Smith Cloud filaments are part of its warm neutral medium. We also find a relationship between thermal linewidth and the $v_{LSR}$ of the filaments. We study the plane-of-sky magnetic field as traced by Planck 353 GHz polarized dust emission along the line of sight and find the HI filaments in this region are not aligned with the magnetic field. This is likely related to their location close to dynamic processes in the Galactic Plane and/or the low column density of the filaments relative to emission in the Plane. The results show the HI filaments are found in a wide range of Galactic environments and form through multiple processes.

High-spatial-resolution HI observations have led to the realisation that the nearby (within few hundreds of parsecs) Galactic atomic filamentary structures are aligned with the ambient magnetic field. Enabled by the high quality data from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) radio telescope for the Galactic ASKAP HI (GASKAP-HI) survey, we investigate the potential magnetic alignment of the $\gtrsim 10\,{\rm pc}$-scale HI filaments in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Using the Rolling Hough Transform (RHT) technique that automatically identifies filamentary structures, combined with our newly devised ray-tracing algorithm that compares the HI and starlight polarisation data, we find that the HI filaments in the northeastern end of the SMC main body ("Bar" region) and the transition area between the main body and the tidal feature ("Wing" region) appear preferentially aligned with the magnetic field traced by starlight polarisation. Meanwhile, the remaining SMC volume lacks starlight polarisation data of sufficient quality to draw any conclusions. This suggests for the first time that filamentary HI structures can be magnetically aligned across a large spatial volume ($\gtrsim\,{\rm kpc}$) outside of the Milky Way. In addition, we generate maps of the preferred orientation of HI filaments throughout the entire SMC, revealing the highly complex gaseous structures of the galaxy likely shaped by a combination of the intrinsic internal gas dynamics, tidal interactions, and star formation feedback processes. We report a tentative detection of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of WLM, an isolated, low-mass (log$M_*/M_\odot\approx7.6$), dwarf irregular galaxy in the Local Group (LG). We analyze an HST/COS archival spectrum of a quasar sightline (PHL2525), which is 45 kpc (0.5 virial radius) from WLM and close to the Magellanic Stream (MS). Along this sightline, two ion absorbers are detected in Si II, Si III, Si IV, C II, and C IV at velocities of $\sim$-220 km s$^{-1}$ (Component v-220) and $\sim$-150 km s$^{-1}$ (Component v-150). To identify their origins, we study the position-velocity alignment of the components with WLM and the nearby MS. Near the Magellanic longitude of PHL2525, the MS-related neutral and ionized gas moves at $\lesssim-190$ km s$^{-1}$, suggesting an MS origin for Component v-220, but not for Component v-150. Because PHL2525 passes near WLM and Component v-150 is close to WLM's systemic velocity ($\sim$-132 km s$^{-1}$), it is likely that Component v-150 arises from the galaxy's CGM. This results in a total Si mass in WLM's CGM of $M_{\rm Si}^{\rm CGM}\sim(0.2-1.0)\times10^5~M_\odot$ using assumption from other COS dwarf studies. Comparing $M_{\rm Si}^{\rm CGM}$ to the total Si mass synthesized in WLM over its lifetime ($\sim$1.3$\times10^5~M_\odot$), we find $\sim$3% is locked in stars, $\sim$6% in the ISM, $\sim$15%-77% in the CGM, and the rest ($\sim$14%-76%) is likely lost beyond the virial radius. Our finding resonates with other COS dwarf galaxy studies and theoretical predictions that low-mass galaxies can easily lose metals into their CGM due to stellar feedback and shallow gravitational potential., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

For the first time both H$\alpha$ and far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations from an HI-selected sample are used to determine the dust-corrected star formation rate density (SFRD: $\dot{\rho}$) in the local Universe. Applying the two star formation rate indicators on 294 local galaxies we determine log($\dot{\rho}$$ _{H\alpha}) = -1.68~^{+0.13}_{-0.05}$ [M$_{\odot} $ yr$^{-1} $ Mpc$^{-3}]$ and log($\dot{\rho}_{FUV}$) $ = -1.71~^{+0.12}_{-0.13}$ [M$_\odot $ yr$^{-1} $ Mpc$^{-3}]$. These values are derived from scaling H$\alpha$ and FUV observations to the HI mass function. Galaxies were selected to uniformly sample the full HI mass (M$_{HI}$) range of the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (M$_{HI} \sim10^{7}$ to $\sim10^{10.7}$ M$_{\odot}$). The approach leads to relatively larger sampling of dwarf galaxies compared to optically-selected surveys. The low HI mass, low luminosity and low surface brightness galaxy populations have, on average, lower H$\alpha$/FUV flux ratios than the remaining galaxy populations, consistent with the earlier results of Meurer. The near-identical H$\alpha$- and FUV-derived SFRD values arise with the low H$\alpha$/FUV flux ratios of some galaxies being offset by enhanced H$\alpha$ from the brightest and high mass galaxy populations. Our findings confirm the necessity to fully sample the HI mass range for a complete census of local star formation to include lower stellar mass galaxies which dominate the local Universe., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Every quasar (QSO) spectrum contains absorption-line signatures from the interstellar medium, disk-halo interface, and circumgalactic medium (CGM) of the Milky Way (MW). We analyze Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) spectra of 132 QSOs to study the significance and origin of SiIV absorption at $|v_{\rm LSR}|\leq100$ km/s in the Galactic halo. The gas in the north predominantly falls in at $-50\lesssim v_{\rm LSR}\lesssim 0$ km/s, whereas in the south, no such pattern is observed. The SiIV column density has an average and a standard deviation of $\langle N_{\rm SiIV}\rangle=(3.8\pm1.4)\times10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$. At $|b|\gtrsim 30$ degree, $N_{\rm SiIV}$ does not significantly correlate with $b$, which cannot be explained by a commonly adopted flat-slab geometry. We propose a two-component model to reconstruct the $N_{\rm SiIV}$-$b$ distribution: a plane-parallel component $N_{\rm DH}^{\perp}$ to account for the MW's disk-halo interface and a global component $N_{\rm G}$ to reproduce the weak dependence on $b$. We find $N_{\rm DH}^{\perp}=1.3^{+4.7}_{-0.7}\times10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $N_{\rm G}=(3.4\pm0.3)\times10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$ on the basis of Bayesian analyses and block bootstrapping. The global component is most likely to have a Galactic origin, although its exact location is uncertain. If it were associated with the MW's CGM, we would find $M_{\rm gas, all}\gtrsim4.7\times10^9\ M_{\odot} (\frac{C_f}{1})(\frac{R}{75\ {\rm kpc}})^2 (\frac{f_{\rm SiIV}}{0.3})^{-1}(\frac{Z}{0.3\ Z_{\odot}})^{-1}$ for the cool gas at all velocities in the Galactic halo. Our analyses show that there is likely a considerable amount of gas at $|v_{\rm LSR}|\leq100$ km s$^{-1}$ hidden in the MW's CGM. We report the detection of a largely ionized very-high velocity cloud (VHVC; $v_{\rm LSR}\sim-350$ km/s) toward M33 with the Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origin Spectrograph. The VHVC is detected in OI, CII, SiII, and SiIII absorption along five sightlines separated by ~0.06-0.4 degree. On sub-degree scales, the velocities and ionic column densities of the VHVC remain relatively smooth with standard deviations of +/-14 km/s and +/-0.15 dex between the sightlines, respectively. The VHVC has a metallicity of [OI/HI]=-0.56+/-0.17 dex (Z=0.28+/-0.11 Z$_{\odot}$). Despite the position-velocity proximity of the VHVC to the ionized Magellanic Stream, the VHVC's higher metallicity makes it unlikely to be associated with the Stream, highlighting the complex velocity structure of this region of sky. We investigate the VHVC's possible origin by revisiting its surrounding HI environment. We find that the VHVC may be: (1) a MW CGM cloud, (2) related to a nearby HI VHVC -- Wright's Cloud, or (3) connected to M33's northern warp. Furthermore, the VHVC could be a bridge connecting Wright's Cloud and M33's northern warp, which would make it a Magellanic-like structure in the halo of M33., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Evidence for gas accretion onto galaxies can be found throughout the universe. In this chapter, I summarize the direct and indirect signatures of this process and discuss the primary sources. The evidence for gas accretion includes the star formation rates and metallicities of galaxies, the evolution of the cold gas content of the universe with time, numerous indirect indicators for individual galaxies, and a few direct detections of inflow. The primary sources of gas accretion are the intergalactic medium, satellite gas and feedback material. We report the detection of accreting ionized gas at the disk-halo interface of the nearby galaxy M33. We analyze HST/COS absorption-line spectra of seven ultraviolet-bright stars evenly distributed across the disk of M33. We find Si IV absorption components consistently redshifted relative to the bulk M33's ISM absorption along all the sightlines. The Si IV detection indicates an enriched, disk-wide, ionized gas inflow toward the disk. This inflow is most likely multi-phase as the redshifted components can also be observed in ions with lower ionization states (e.g., S II, P II, Fe II, Si II). Kinematic modeling of the inflow is consistent with an accreting layer at the disk-halo interface of M33, which has an accretion velocity of 110$^{+15}_{-20}$ km s$^{-1}$ at a distance of 1.5$^{+1.0}_{-1.0}$ kiloparsec above the disk. The modeling indicates a total mass of $\sim3.9\times10^7$ M$_{\odot}$ for the accreting material at the disk-halo interface on the near side of the M33 disk , with an accretion rate of $\sim2.9$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. The high accretion rate and the level of metal-enrichment suggest the inflow is likely to be the fall back of M33 gas from a galactic fountain and/or the gas pulled loosed during a close interaction between M31 and M33. Our study of M33 is the first to unambiguously reveal the existence of a disk-wide, ionized gas inflow beyond the Milky Way, providing a better understanding of gas accretion in the vicinity of a galaxy disk., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Using high-resolution data from the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array HI (GALFA-HI) survey, we show that linear structure in Galactic neutral hydrogen (HI) correlates with the magnetic field orientation implied by Planck 353 GHz polarized dust emission. The structure of the neutral interstellar medium is more tightly coupled to the magnetic field than previously known. At high Galactic latitudes, where the Planck data are noise-dominated, the HI data provide an independent constraint on the Galactic magnetic field orientation, and hence the local dust polarization angle. We detect strong cross-correlations between template maps constructed from estimates of dust intensity combined with either HI-derived angles, starlight polarization angles, or Planck 353 GHz angles. We present the first detection of HCO$^+$ absorption in the Magellanic System. Using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), we observed 9 extragalactic radio continuum sources behind the Magellanic System and detected HCO$^+$ absorption towards one source located behind the leading edge of the Magellanic Bridge. The detection is located at LSR velocity of $v=214.0 \pm 0.4\rm\,km\,s^{-1}$, with a full width at half maximum of $\Delta v=4.5\pm 1.0\rm\,km\,s^{-1}$ and optical depth of $\tau(\rm HCO^+)=0.10\pm 0.02$. Although there is abundant neutral hydrogen (HI) surrounding the sightline in position-velocity space, at the exact location of the absorber the HI column density is low, $<10^{20}\rm\,cm^{-2}$, and there is little evidence for dust or CO emission from Planck observations. While the origin and survival of molecules in such a diffuse environment remains unclear, dynamical events such as HI flows and cloud collisions in this interacting system likely play an important role., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 6 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables

We assess the fraction of the Milky Way's circumgalactic medium (CGM) eluding detection due to its velocity being similar to gas in the disk. This is achieved using synthetic observations of the CGM in a simulated MW-mass galaxy that shows similar CGM kinematics to the MW and external L$\sim$L$_*$ galaxies. As viewed by a mock observer at a location similar to the Sun, only 50$\%$ (by mass) of the gas moves at high velocity ($|v_{\rm LSR}|\geq$100 km s$^{-1}$ or $|v_{\rm DEV}|\geq$50 km s$^{-1}$) in the simulated CGM and would be observable. The low velocity gas is thermodynamically similar to the high velocity gas, indicating the 50$\%$ observable fraction is applicable to spectral lines from the radio to the ultraviolet. We apply the observable mass fraction (50$\%$) to current estimates of the MW's CGM, and find a corrected total mass of 2.8$\times$10$^{8} M_{\odot}$ for gas below 10$^6$K within $\sim15$ kpc (this excludes the Magellanic System). This is less than the total mass of the CGM extending out to $\sim$150 kpc in other L$\sim$L$_*$ galaxies. However, we find similar OVI column densities when the discrepancy in path length between the MW and external galaxies is considered. The coherent spatial and kinematic distribution of low velocity gas in the simulated CGM suggests that current HI observations of the MW's CGM may miss large low velocity HI complexes. In addition, current mass estimates of the MW's CGM based on high-velocity line observations with distance constraints may miss a non-negligible fraction of gas in the outer halo which can be obscured if it moves at a velocity similar to the gas in the lower halo., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We have searched for infrared dust emission from subsets of compact, Galactic neutral hydrogen clouds, with the purpose of looking for dust in high-velocity clouds, identifying low-velocity halo clouds, and investigating the cloud populations defined in the GALFA-HI Compact Cloud Catalog. We do not detect dust emission from high-velocity clouds. The lack of dust emission from a group of low-velocity clouds supports the claim that they are low-velocity halo clouds. We detect dust in the remaining low-velocity clouds, indicating a Galactic origin, with a significantly greater dust-to-gas ratio for clouds with linewidths near 15 km/s. We present observations of a new group of structures in the diffuse Galactic ISM: slender, linear HI features we dub "fibers" that extend for many degrees at high Galactic latitude. To characterize and measure the extent and strength of these fibers, we present the Rolling Hough Transform (RHT), a new machine vision method for parameterizing the coherent linearity of structures in the image plane. With this powerful new tool we show the fibers are oriented along the interstellar magnetic field as probed by starlight polarization. We find that these low column density (N(HI) ~ 5 x 10^18 cm^-2) fiber features are most likely a component of the local cavity wall, about 100 pc away. The HI data we use to demonstrate this alignment at high latitude are from the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array HI (GALFA-HI) Survey and the Parkes Galactic All Sky Survey (GASS). We find better alignment in the higher resolution GALFA-HI data, where the fibers are more visually evident. This trend continues in our investigation of magnetically aligned linear features in the Riegel-Crutcher HI cold cloud, detected in the Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS). We propose an application of the RHT for estimating the field strength in such a cloud, based on the Chandrasekhar-Fermi method. We present a catalog of 1964 isolated, compact neutral hydrogen clouds from the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array Survey Data Release One (GALFA-HI DR1). The clouds were identified by a custom machine-vision algorithm utilizing Difference of Gaussian kernels to search for clouds smaller than 20'. The clouds have velocities typically between |VLSR| = 20-400 km/s, linewidths of 2.5-35 km/s, and column densities ranging from 1 - 35 x 10^18 cm^-2. The distances to the clouds in this catalog may cover several orders of magnitude, so the masses may range from less than a Solar mass for clouds within the Galactic disc, to greater than 10^4 Solar Masses for HVCs at the tip of the Magellanic Stream. To search for trends, we separate the catalog into five populations based on position, velocity, and linewidth: high velocity clouds (HVCs); galaxy candidates; cold low velocity clouds (LVCs); warm, low positive-velocity clouds in the third Galactic Quadrant; and the remaining warm LVCs. The observed HVCs are found to be associated with previously-identified HVC complexes. We do not observe a large population of isolated clouds at high velocities as some models predict. Galactic halo gas traces inflowing star formation fuel and feedback from a galaxy's disk and is therefore crucial to our understanding of galaxy evolution. In this review, we summarize the multi-wavelength observational properties and origin models of Galactic and low redshift spiral galaxy halo gas. Galactic halos contain multiphase gas flows that are dominated in mass by the ionized component and extend to large radii. The densest, coldest halo gas observed in neutral hydrogen (HI) is generally closest to the disk (< 20 kpc), and absorption line results indicate warm and warm-hot diffuse halo gas is present throughout a galaxy's halo. The hot halo gas detected is not a significant fraction of a galaxy's baryons. The disk-halo interface is where the multiphase flows are integrated into the star forming disk, and there is evidence for both feedback and fueling at this interface from the temperature and kinematic gradient of the gas and HI structures. The origin and fate of halo gas is considered in the context of cosmological and idealized local simulations. Accretion along cosmic filaments occurs in both a hot (> 10^5.5 K) and cold mode in simulations, with the compressed material close to the disk the coldest and densest, in agreement with observations. There is evidence in halo gas observations for radiative and mechanical feedback mechanisms, including escaping photons from the disk, supernova-driven winds, and a galactic fountain. Satellite accretion also leaves behind abundant halo gas. This satellite gas interacts with the existing halo medium, and much of this gas will become part of the diffuse halo before it can reach the disk. A head-tail high-velocity cloud (HVC) is a neutral hydrogen halo cloud that appears to be interacting with the diffuse halo medium as evident by its compressed head trailed by a relatively diffuse tail. This paper presents a sample of 116 head-tail HVCs across the southern sky (d < 2 deg) from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) HVC catalog, which has a spatial resolution of 15.5 arcmin (45 pc at 10 kpc) and a sensitivity of N_HI=2 x 10^(18) cm^(-2) (5 sigma). 35% of the HIPASS compact and semi-compact HVCs (CHVCs and :HVCs) can be classified as head-tail clouds from their morphology. The clouds have typical masses of 730 M_sun at 10 kpc (26,000 M_sun at 60 kpc) and the majority can be associated with larger HVC complexes given their spatial and kinematic proximity. This proximity, together with their similar properties to CHVCs and :HVCs without head-tail structure, indicate the head-tail clouds have short lifetimes, consistent with simulation predictions. Approximately half of the head-tail clouds can be associated with the Magellanic System, with the majority in the region of the Leading Arm with position angles pointing in the general direction of the movement of the Magellanic System. The abundance in the Leading Arm region is consistent with this feature being closer to the Galactic disk than the Magellanic Stream and moving through a denser halo medium. The head-tail clouds will feed the multi-phase halo medium rather than the Galactic disk directly and provide additional evidence for a diffuse Galactic halo medium extending to at least the distance of the Magellanic Clouds., Comment: MNRAS Accepted, 10 figures, 7 in color

We present the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array HI (GALFA-HI) survey, and its first full data release (DR1). GALFA-HI is a high resolution (~ 4'), large area (13000 deg^2), high spectral resolution (0.18 km/s), wide band (-700 < v_LSR < +700 km/s) survey of the Galactic interstellar medium in the 21-cm line hyperfine transition of neutral hydrogen conducted at Arecibo Observatory. Typical noise levels are 80 mK RMS in an integrated 1 km/s channel. GALFA-HI is a dramatic step forward in high-resolution, large-area Galactic HI surveys, and we compare GALFA-HI to past, present, and future Galactic HI surveys. We describe in detail new techniques we have developed to reduce these data in the presence of fixed pattern noise, gain variation, and inconsistent beam shapes, and we show how we have largely mitigated these effects. We present our first full data release, covering 7520 square degrees of sky and representing 3046 hours of integration time, and discuss the details of these data., Comment: Accepted to the ApJS

Observations from the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array HI (GALFA-HI) Survey of the tail of Complex C are presented and the halo clouds associated with this complex cataloged. The properties of the Complex C clouds are compared to clouds cataloged at the tail of the Magellanic Stream to provide insight into the origin and destruction mechanism of Complex C. Magellanic Stream and Complex C clouds show similarities in their mass distributions (slope = -0.7 and -0.6, respectively) and have a common linewidth of 20 - 30 km/s (indicative of a warm component), which may indicate a common origin and/or physical process breaking down the clouds. The clouds cataloged at the tail of Complex C extend over a mass range of 10^1.1 to 10^4.8 solar masses, sizes of 10^1.2 to 10^2.6 pc, and have a median volume density of 0.065 cm^(-3) and median pressure of (P/k) = 580 K cm^{-3}. We do not see a prominent two-phase structure in Complex C, possibly due to its low metallicity and inefficient cooling compared to other halo clouds. From assuming the Complex C clouds are in pressure equilibrium with a hot halo medium, we find a median halo density of 5.8 x 10^(-4) cm^(-3), which given a constant distance of 10 kpc, is at a z-height of ~3 kpc. Using the same argument for the Stream results in a median halo density of 8.4 x 10^(-5) x (60kpc/d) cm^(-3). These densities are consistent with previous observational constraints and cosmological simulations. We also assess the derived cloud and halo properties with three dimensional grid simulations of halo HI clouds and find the temperature is generally consistent within a factor of 1.5 and the volume densities, pressures and halo densities are consistent within a factor of 3., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ. 54 pages, including 6 tables and 16 figures

We present results from the first systematic search for outlying HII regions, as part of a sample of 96 emission-line point sources (referred to as ELdots - emission-line dots) derived from the NOAO Survey for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies (SINGG). Our automated ELdot-finder searches SINGG narrow-band and continuum images for high equivalent width point sources outside the optical radius of the target galaxy (> 2 X r25 in the R-band). Follow-up longslit spectroscopy and deep GALEX images (exposure time > 1000 s) distinguish outlying HII regions from background galaxies whose strong emission lines ([OIII], Hbeta or [OII]) have been redshifted into the SINGG bandpass. We find that these deep GALEX images can serve as a substitute for spectroscopic follow-up because outlying HII regions separate cleanly from background galaxies in color-color space. We identify seven SINGG systems with outlying massive star formation that span a large range in Halpha luminosities corresponding to a few O stars in the most nearby cases, and unresolved dwarf satellite companion galaxies in the most distant cases. Six of these seven systems feature galaxies with nearby companions or interacting galaxies. Furthermore, our results indicate that some outlying HII regions are linked to the extended-UV disks discovered by GALEX, representing emission from the most massive O stars among a more abundant population of lower mass (or older) star clusters. We discuss the support for the cooling of gas directly at the disk-halo interface as a mechanism to continually fuel a galaxy. This may be an important reservoir as there is not enough cold gas observed in galaxy halos and simulations indicate the existing cold clouds will be rapidly destroyed as they move through the surrounding halo medium. Great strides have been made in the last two decades in determining how galaxies evolve from their initial dark matter seeds to the complex structures we observe at z=0. The role of mergers has been documented through both observations and simulations, numerous satellites that may represent these initial dark matter seeds have been discovered in the Local Group, high redshift galaxies have been revealed with monstrous star formation rates, and the gaseous cosmic web has been mapped through absorption line experiments. Despite these efforts, the dark matter simulations that include baryons are still unable to accurately reproduce galaxies. One of the major problems is our incomplete understanding of how a galaxy accretes its baryons and subsequently forms stars. Galaxy formation simulations have been unable to accurately represent the required gas physics on cosmological timescales, and observations have only just begun to detect the star formation fuel over a range of redshifts and environments. How galaxies obtain gas and subsequently form stars is a major unsolved, yet tractable problem in contemporary extragalactic astrophysics. Many results in modern astrophysics rest on the notion that the Initial Mass Function (IMF) is universal. Our observations of HI selected galaxies in the light of H-alpha and the far-ultraviolet (FUV) challenge this notion. The flux ratio H-alpha/FUV from these two star formation tracers shows strong correlations with the surface-brightness in H-alpha and the R band: Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies have lower ratios compared to High Surface Brightness galaxies and to expectations from equilibrium star formation models using commonly favored IMF parameters. Weaker but significant correlations of H-alpha/FUV with luminosity, rotational velocity and dynamical mass are found as well as a systematic trend with morphology. The correlated variations of H-alpha/FUV with other global parameters are thus part of the larger family of galaxy scaling relations. The H-alpha/FUV correlations can not be due to dust correction errors, while systematic variations in the star formation history can not explain the trends with both H-alpha and R surface brightness. LSB galaxies are unlikely to have a higher escape fraction of ionizing photons considering their high gas fraction, and color-magnitude diagrams. The most plausible explanation for the correlations are systematic variations of the upper mass limit and/or slope of the IMF at the upper end. We outline a scenario of pressure driving the correlations by setting the efficiency of the formation of the dense star clusters where the highest mass stars form. Our results imply that the star formation rate measured in a galaxy is highly sensitive to the tracer used in the measurement. A non-universal IMF also calls into question the interpretation of metal abundance patterns in dwarf galaxies and star formation histories derived from color magnitude diagrams. The disruption of the M33 galaxy is evident from its extended gaseous structure. We present new data from the Galactic Arecibo L-Band Feed Array HI (GALFA-HI) Survey that show the full extent and detailed spatial and kinematic structure of M33's neutral hydrogen. Over 18% of the HI mass of M33 (M_HI(tot) =1.4 x 10^9 Msun) is found beyond the star forming disk as traced in the far-ultraviolet (FUV). The most distinct features are extended warps, an arc from the northern warp to the disk, diffuse gas surrounding the galaxy, and a southern cloud with a filament back to the galaxy. The features extend out to 22 kpc from the galaxy center (18 kpc from the edge of the FUV disk) and the gas is directly connected to M33's disk. Only five discrete clouds (i.e., gas not directly connected to M33 in position-velocity space) are catalogued in the vicinity of M33, and these clouds show similar properties to Galactic and M31 halo clouds. M33's gaseous features most likely originate from the tidal disruption of M33 by M31 1-3 Gyr ago as shown from an orbit analysis which results in a tidal radius < 15 kpc in the majority of M33's possible orbits. M33 is now beyond the disruptive gravitational influence of M31 and the gas appears to be returning to M33's disk and redistributing its star formation fuel. M33's high mean velocity dispersion in the disk (~18.5 km/s) may also be consistent with the previous interaction and high rate of star formation. M33 will either exhaust its star formation fuel in the next few Gyrs or eventually become star formation fuel for M31. Models that reproduce the observed high-velocity clouds (HVCs) also predict clouds at lower radial velocities that may easily be confused with Galactic disk (|z| < 1 kpc) gas. We describe the first search for these low-velocity halo clouds (LVHCs) using IRAS data and the initial data from the Galactic Arecibo L-band Feed Array survey in HI (GALFA-HI). The technique is based upon the expectation that such clouds should, like HVCs, have very limited infrared thermal dust emission as compared to their HI column density. We describe our 'displacement-map' technique for robustly determining the dust-to-gas ratio of clouds and the associated errors that takes into account the significant scatter in the infrared flux from the Galactic disk gas. We find that there exist lower-velocity clouds that have extremely low dust-to-gas ratios, consistent with being in the Galactic halo - candidate LVHCs. We also confirm the lack of dust in many HVCs with the notable exception of complex M, which we consider to be the first detection of warm dust in HVCs. We do not confirm the previously reported detection of dust in complex C. In addition, we find that most Intermediate- and Low-Velocity clouds that are part of the Galactic disk have a higher 60 micron/100 micron flux ratio than is typically seen in Galactic HI, which is consistent with a previously proposed picture in which fast-moving Galactic clouds have smaller, hotter dust grains., Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures. We have conducted a deep, complete HI survey, using Arecibo/ALFA, of a field centered on the nearby, isolated galaxy, NGC 2903, which is similar to the Milky Way in its properties. The field size was 150 kpc x 260 kpc and the final velocity range spanned from 100 to 1133 km/s. The ALFA beams have been mapped as a function of azimuth and cleaned from each azimuth-specific cube prior to forming final cubes. The final HI data are sensitive down to an HI mass of 2 x 10^5 Mo and column density of 2 x 10^{17} cm^{-2} at the 3sigma x 2deltaV level, where sigma is the rms noise level and deltaV is the velocity resolution. NGC 2903 is found to have an HI envelope that is larger than previously known, extending to at least 3 times the optical diameter of the galaxy. Our search for companions yields one new discovery with an HI mass of 2.6 x 10^6 Mo. The companion is 64 kpc from NGC 2903 in projection, is likely associated with a small optical galaxy of similar total stellar mass, and is dark matter dominated, with a total mass >10^8 Mo. In the region surveyed, there are now two known companions: our new discovery and a previously known system that is likely a dwarf spheroidal, lacking HI content. If HI constitutes 1% of the total mass in all possible companions, then we should have detected 230 companions, according to LCDM predictions. Consequently, if this number of dark matter clumps are indeed present, then they contain less than 1% HI content, possibly existing as very faint dwarf spheroidals or as starless, gasless dark matter clumps., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 19 pages, 13 figures. Radio observations of gas in the Milky Way and Local Group are vital for understanding how galaxies function as systems. The unique sensitivity of Arecibo's 305m dish, coupled with the 7-beam Arecibo L-Band Feed Array (ALFA), provides an unparalleled tool for investigating the full range of interstellar phenomena traced by the HI 21cm line. The GALFA (Galactic ALFA) HI Survey is mapping the entire Arecibo sky over a velocity range of -700 to +700 km/s with 0.2 km/s velocity channels and an angular resolution of 3.4 arcminutes. We present highlights from the TOGS (Turn on GALFA Survey) portion of GALFA-HI, which is covering thousands of square degrees in commensal drift scan observations with the ALFALFA and AGES extragalactic ALFA surveys. Halo clouds have been found about the three largest galaxies of the Local Group and in the halos of nearby spirals. This suggests they are a relatively generic feature of the galaxy evolution process and a source of fuel for galaxy disks. In this review, two main sources of disk star formation fuel, satellite material and clouds condensing from the hot halo medium, are discussed and their contribution to fueling the Galaxy quantified. HST ACS/HRC images in UV (F250W), V (F555W), and I (F814W) resolve three isolated OB associations that lie up to 30 kpc from the stellar disk of the S0 galaxy NGC 1533. Previous narrow-band Halpha imaging and optical spectroscopy showed these objects as unresolved intergalactic HII regions having Halpha luminosities consistent with single early-type O stars. These young stars lie in stripped HI gas with column densities ranging from 1.5 - 2.5 * 10^20 cm^-2 and velocity dispersions near 30 km s^-1. Using the HST broadband colors and magnitudes along with previously-determined Halpha luminosities, we place limits on the masses and ages of each association, considering the importance of stochastic effects for faint (M_V >-8) stellar populations. The upper limits to their stellar masses range from 600 M_sun to 7000 M_sun, and ages range from 2 - 6 Myrs. This analysis includes an updated calculation of the conversion factor between the ionizing luminosity and the total number of main sequence O stars contained within an HII region. The photometric properties and sizes of the isolated associations and other objects in the HRC fields are consistent with those of Galactic stellar associations, open clusters and/or single O and B stars. We interpret the age-size sequence of associations and clustered field objects as an indication that these isolated associations are most likely rapidly dispersing. Furthermore, we consider the possibility that these isolated associations represent the first generation of stars in the HI ring surrounding NGC 1533. We report an accurate distance of d = 10+/-2.5kpc to the high-velocity cloud Complex C. Using high signal-to-noise Keck/HIRES spectra of two horizontal-branch stars, we have detected CaII K absorption lines from the cloud. Significant non-detections toward a further 3 stars yield robust lower distance limits. The resulting HI mass of Complex C is 4.9^{+2.8}_{-2.2} x 10^6 Msun; a total mass of 8.2^{+4.6}_{-2.6} x 10^6 Msun is implied, after corrections for helium and ionization. At 10kpc, Complex C has physical dimensions 3x15 kpc, and if it is as thick as it is wide, then the average density is log ~ -2.5. We estimate the contribution of Complex C to the mass influx may be as high as ~0.14 Msun/yr., Comment: Resubmitted to ApJ. 8 figures

Ongoing accretion onto galactic disks has been recently theorized to progress via the unstable cooling of the baryonic halo into condensed clouds. These clouds have been identified as analogous to the High-Velocity Clouds (HVCs) observed in HI in our Galaxy. Here we compare the distribution of HVCs observed around our own Galaxy and extra-planar gas around the Andromeda galaxy to these possible HVC analogs in a simulation of galaxy formation that naturally generates these condensed clouds. We find a very good correspondence between these observations and the simulation, in terms of number, angular size, velocity distribution, overall flux and flux distribution of the clouds. We show that condensed cloud accretion only accounts for ~ 0.2 M_solar / year of the current overall Galactic accretion in the simulations. We also find that the simulated halo clouds accelerate and become more massive as they fall toward the disk. The parameter space of the simulated clouds is consistent with all of the observed HVC complexes that have distance constraints, except the Magellanic Stream which is known to have a different origin. We also find that nearly half of these simulated halo clouds would be indistinguishable from lower-velocity gas and that this effect is strongest further from the disk of the galaxy, thus indicating a possible missing population of HVCs. We present Arecibo L-band Feed Array 21-cm observations of a sub-complex of HVCs at the tip of the Anti-Center Complex. These observations show morphological details that point to interaction with the ambient halo medium and differential drag within the cloud sub-complex. We develop a new technique for measuring cloud distances, which relies upon these observed morphological and kinematic characteristics, and show that it is consistent with H-alpha distances. The Northern HIPASS catalogue (NHICAT) is the northern extension of the HIPASS catalogue, HICAT (Meyer et al. 2004). This extension adds the sky area between the declination range of +2 deg < dec. < +25.5 deg to HICAT's declination range of -90 deg < dec. < +2 deg. HIPASS is a blind HI survey using the Parkes Radio Telescope covering 71% of the sky (including this northern extension) and a heliocentric velocity range of -1,280 km/s to 12,700 km/s . The entire Virgo Cluster region has been observed in the Northern HIPASS. The galaxy catalogue, NHICAT, contains 1002 sources with v_hel > 300 km/s . Sources with -300 km/s < v_hel < 300 km/s were excluded to avoid contamination by Galactic emission. In total, the entire HIPASS survey has found 5317 galaxies identified purely by their HI content. We have found the peculiar galaxy NGC922 to be a new drop-through ring galaxy using multi-wavelength (UV-radio) imaging and spectroscopic observations. Its `C'-shaped morphology and tidal plume indicate a recent strong interaction with its companion which was identified with these observations. Using numerical simulations we demonstrate that the main properties of the system can be generated by a high-speed off-axis drop-through collision of a small galaxy with a larger disk system, thus making NGC922 one of the nearest known collisional ring galaxies. We derive observed Halpha and R band luminosity densities of an HI-selected sample of nearby galaxies using the SINGG sample to be l_Halpha' = (9.4 +/- 1.8)e38 h_70 erg s^-1 Mpc^-3 for Halpha and l_R' = (4.4 +/- 0.7)e37 h_70 erg s^-1 A^-1 Mpc^-3 in the R band. This R band luminosity density is approximately 70% of that found by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. This leads to a local star formation rate density of log(SFRD) = -1.80 +0.13/-0.07(random) +/- 0.03(systematic) + log(h_70) after applying a mean internal extinction correction of 0.82 magnitudes. The gas cycling time of this sample is found to be t_gas = 7.5 +1.3/-2.1 Gyr, and the volume-averaged equivalent width of the SINGG galaxies is EW(Halpha) = 28.8 +7.2/-4.7 A (21.2 +4.2/-3.5 A without internal dust correction). As with similar surveys, these results imply that SFRD(z) decreases drastically from z ~ 1.5 to the present. A comparison of the dynamical masses of the SINGG galaxies evaluated at their optical limits with their stellar and HI masses shows significant evidence of downsizing: the most massive galaxies have a larger fraction of their mass locked up in stars compared with HI, while the opposite is true for less massive galaxies. We show that the application of the Kennicutt star formation law to a galaxy having the median orbital time at the optical limit of this sample results in a star formation rate decay with cosmic time similar to that given by the SFRD(z) evolution. This implies that the SFRD(z) evolution is primarily due to the secular evolution of galaxies, rather than interactions or mergers. We introduce the Survey for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies (SINGG), a census of star formation in HI-selected galaxies. The survey consists of H-alpha and R-band imaging of a sample of 468 galaxies selected from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS). The sample spans three decades in HI mass and is free of many of the biases that affect other star forming galaxy samples. We present the criteria for sample selection, list the entire sample, discuss our observational techniques, and describe the data reduction and calibration methods. This paper focuses on 93 SINGG targets whose observations have been fully reduced and analyzed to date. The majority of these show a single Emission Line Galaxy (ELG). We see multiple ELGs in 13 fields, with up to four ELGs in a single field. All of the targets in this sample are detected in H-alpha indicating that dormant (non-star forming) galaxies with M(HI) > ~3e7 M_sun are very rare. A database of the measured global properties of the ELGs is presented. The ELG sample spans four orders of magnitude in luminosity (H-alpha and R-band), and H-alpha surface brightness, nearly three orders of magnitude in R surface brightness and nearly two orders of magnitude in H-alpha equivalent width (EW). The surface brightness distribution of our sample is broader than that of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic sample, the (EW) distribution is broader than prism-selected samples, and the morphologies found include all common types of star forming galaxies (e.g. irregular, spiral, blue compact dwarf, starbursts, merging and colliding systems, and even residual star formation in S0 and Sa spirals). Potential condensed clouds of gas in the Galactic halo are examined in the context of the recent models of cooling, fragmenting clouds building up the baryonic mass of the Galaxy. 582 high-velocity clouds (HVCs) are defined as the potential infalling, condensed clouds and the sample's spatial and velocity distribution are presented. With the majority of the hydrogen in the clouds ionized (~85%), the clouds at a distribution of distances within 150 kpc, and their individual total masses below 10^7 Msun, the total mass in potentially condensed clouds is 1.1 - 1.4 x 10^9 Msun. If the tighter distance constraint of < 60 kpc is adopted this mass range drops to 4.5 - 6.1 x 10^8 Msun. We have detected absorption lines from the High Velocity Cloud Complex WB in the spectrum of the star HE1048+0231. This detection sets an upper distance limit to the cloud of 8.8^{+2.3}_{-1.3} kpc. Non-detection (at >4 sigma confidence) in the star HE1138-1303 at 7.7 +/- 0.2 kpc sets a probable lower limit. The equivalent width of the CaII K line due to the HVC (114.6 +/- 4.4 mA) corresponds to a column density of 1.32 +/- 0.05 x 10^12 cm^-2. Using an HI spectrum from the Leiden/Argentine/Bonn survey, we calculated N(CaII)/N(HI) = 81 +/- 16 x 10^-9. These distance limits imply an HI mass limit of 3.8 x 10^5 Msun < M_HI < 4.9 x 10^5 Msun. The upper distance limit imposed by these observations shows that this HVC complex has a probable Galactic or circum-Galactic origin. The relationship between gas-rich galaxies and Ly-alpha absorbers is addressed in this paper in the context of the baryonic content of galaxy halos. Deep Arecibo HI observations are presented of two gas-rich spiral galaxies within 125 kpc projected distance of a Ly-alpha absorber at a similar velocity. The galaxies investigated are close to edge-on and the absorbers lie almost along their major axes, allowing for a comparison of the Ly-alpha absorber velocities with galactic rotation. This comparison is used to examine whether the absorbers are diffuse gas rotating with the galaxies' halos, outflow material from the galaxies, or intergalactic gas in the low redshift cosmic web. The results indicate that if the gas resides in the galaxies' halos it is not rotating with the system and possibly counter-rotating. In addition, simple geometry indicates the gas was not ejected from the galaxies and there are no gas-rich satellites detected down to 3.6 - 7.5 x 10^6 Msun, or remnants of satellites to 5-6 x 10^{18} cm^{-2}. The gas could potentially be infalling from large radii, but the velocities and distances are rather high compared to the high velocity clouds around the Milky Way. The most likely explanation is the galaxies and absorbers are not directly associated, despite the vicinity of the spiral galaxies to the absorbers (58-77 kpc from the HI edge). The spiral galaxies reside in a filament of intergalactic gas, and the gas detected by the absorber has not yet come into equilibrium with the galaxy. We present the largest catalogue to date of optical counterparts for HI radio-selected galaxies, Hopcat. Of the 4315 HI radio-detected sources from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (Hipass) catalogue, we find optical counterparts for 3618 (84%) galaxies. Of these, 1798 (42%) have confirmed optical velocities and 848 (20%) are single matches without confirmed velocities. Some galaxy matches are members of galaxy groups. From these multiple galaxy matches, 714 (16%) have confirmed optical velocities and a further 258 (6%) galaxies are without confirmed velocities. For 481 (11%), multiple galaxies are present but no single optical counterpart can be chosen and 216 (5%) have no obvious optical galaxy present. Most of these 'blank fields' are in crowded fields along the Galactic plane or have high extinctions. Isolated 'Dark galaxy' candidates are investigated using an extinction cut of ABj < 1 mag and the blank fields category. Of the 3692 galaxies with an ABj extinction < 1 mag, only 13 are also blank fields. Of these, 12 are eliminated either with follow-up Parkes observations or are in crowded fields. The remaining one has a low surface brightness optical counterpart. Hence, no isolated optically dark galaxies have been found within the limits of the Hipass survey., Comment: 10 pages, 15 figures, MNRAS (in press)

We present the first fully and uniformly sampled, spatially complete HI survey of the entire Magellanic System with high velocity resolution, performed with the Parkes Telescope. The final data-cubes have an rms noise of sigma ~ 0.05 K and an effective angular resolution of 16 arcmin. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) are associated with huge gaseous features with a total HI mass of M(HI) = 4.87 10^8 M_sun [d/55 kpc]^2, if all HI gas is at the same distance of 55 kpc. Approximately two thirds of this HI gas is located close to the Magellanic Clouds (Magellanic Bridge and Interface Region), and 25% of the HI gas is associated with the Magellanic Stream. The Leading Arm has a four times lower HI mass than the Magellanic Stream, corresponding to 6% of the total HI mass of the gaseous features. We have analyzed the velocity field of the Magellanic Clouds and their neighborhood introducing a LMC-standard-of-rest frame. The HI in the Magellanic Bridge shows low velocities relative to the Magellanic Clouds suggesting an almost parallel motion, while the gas in the Interface Region has significantly higher relative velocities indicating that this gas is leaving the Magellanic Bridge building up a new section of the Magellanic Stream. The clouds in the Magellanic Stream and the Leading Arm show significant differences, both in the column density distribution and in the shapes of the line profiles. The HI gas in the Magellanic Stream is more smoothly distributed than the gas in the Leading Arm. A possible gaseous component to the stream of debris from the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy is presented. We identify 4 - 10 x 10^6 Msun of neutral hydrogen along the orbit of the Sgr dwarf in the direction of the Galactic anticenter (at 36 kpc, the distance to the stellar debris in this region). This is 1-2% of the estimated total mass of the Sgr dwarf. Both the stellar and gaseous components have negative velocities, but the gaseous component extends to higher negative velocities. If associated, this gaseous stream was most likely stripped from the main body of the dwarf 0.2 - 0.3 Gyr ago during its current orbit after a passage through a diffuse edge of the Galactic disk with a density > 10^{-4} cm^{-3}. A number of very small isolated HII regions have been discovered at projected distances up to 30 kpc from their nearest galaxy. These HII regions appear as tiny emission line objects in narrow band images obtained by the NOAO Survey for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies (SINGG). We present spectroscopic confirmation of four isolated HII regions in two systems, both systems have tidal HI features. The results are consistent with stars forming in interactive debris due to cloud-cloud collisions. The H-alpha luminosities of the isolated HII regions are equivalent to the ionizing flux of only a few O stars each. They are most likely ionized by stars formed in situ, and represent atypical star formation in the low density environment of the outer parts of galaxies. A small but finite intergalactic star formation rate will enrich and ionize the surrounding medium. In one system, NGC 1533, we calculate a star formation rate of 1.5e-3 msun/yr, resulting in a metal enrichment of ~1e-3 solar for the continuous formation of stars. We present deep Halpha spectroscopy towards several high-velocity clouds (HVCs) which vary in structure from compact (CHVCs) to the Magellanic Stream. The clouds range from being bright (~640 mR) to having upper limits on the order of 30 to 70 mR. The Halpha measurements are discussed in relation to their HI properties and distance constraints are given to each of the complexes based on f_esc = 6% of the ionizing photons escaping normal to the Galactic disk (f_escs = 1 - 2% when averaged over solid angle). The results suggest that many HVCs and CHVCs are within a ~40 kpc radius from the Galaxy and are not members of the Local Group at megaparsec distances. However, the Magellanic Stream is inconsistent with this model and needs to be explained. It has bright Halpha emission and little [NII] emission and appears to fall into a different category than the currently detected HVCs. This may reflect the lower metallicities of the Magellanic Clouds compared to the Galaxy, but the strength of the Halpha emission cannot be explained solely by photoionization from the Galaxy. We present a new accurate measurement of the HI mass function of galaxies from the HIPASS Bright Galaxy Catalog, a sample of 1000 galaxies with the highest HI peak flux densities in the southern hemisphere (Koribalski et al. 2003). This sample spans nearly four orders of magnitude in HI mass (from log M_HI/M_sun=6.8 to 10.6, H0=75) and is the largest sample of HI selected galaxies to date. We develop a bivariate maximum likelihood technique to measure the space density of galaxies, and show that this is a robust method, insensitive to the effects of large scale structure. The resulting HI mass function can be fitted satisfactorily with a Schechter function with faint-end slope alpha=-1.30. This slope is found to be dependent on morphological type, with later type galaxies giving steeper slopes. We extensively test various effects that potentially bias the determination of the HI mass function, including peculiar motions of galaxies, large scale structure, selection bias, and inclination effects, and quantify these biases. The large sample of galaxies enables an accurate measurement of the cosmological mass density of neutral gas: Omega_HI=(3.8 +/- 0.6) x 10^{-4}. Using HIPASS data, we have searched for HI in a ~25x25 sq.deg. region centred on the Fornax cluster. Within a velocity search range of 300 - 3700 km/s and a lower flux limit of ~40 mJy, 110 galaxies with HI emission were detected, one of which is previously uncatalogued. None of the detections has early-type morphology. Previously unknown velocities for 14 galaxies have been determined, with a further 4 velocity measurements being significantly dissimilar to published values. Identification of an optical counterpart is relatively unambiguous for more than ~90% of our HI galaxies. The galaxies appear to be embedded in a sheet at the cluster velocity which extends for more than 30 deg across the search area. At the nominal cluster distance of ~20 Mpc, this corresponds to an elongated structure more than 10 Mpc in extent. A velocity gradient across the structure is detected, with radial velocities increasing by \~500 km/s from SE to NW. The clustering of galaxies evident in optical surveys is only weakly suggested in the spatial distribution of our HI detections. Our results suggest a considerable deficit of HI-rich galaxies in the centre of the cluster. However, relative to the field, there is a 3(+/-1)-fold excess of HI-rich galaxies in the outer parts of the cluster where galaxies may be infalling towards the cluster for the first time., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, 110 HI spectra. The Magellanic Stream is a 100\deg x 10\deg filament of gas which lies within the Galactic halo and contains ~ 2 x 10^8 \Msun of neutral hydrogen. We present data from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) in the first complete survey of the entire Magellanic Stream and its surroundings. We also present a summary of the reprocessing techniques used to recover large-scale structure in the Stream. The Stream properties revealed include: bifurcation along the main Stream filament; dense, isolated clouds which follow the entire length of the Stream; head-tail structures; and a complex filamentary web at the head where gas is being freshly stripped away from the Small Magellanic Cloud and the Bridge. Debris which appears to be of Magellanic origin extends out to 20\deg from the main Stream filaments. The large number of elongated Stream clouds suggests the presence of shearing motions within the Stream, arising from tidal forces or interaction with the tenuous Galactic halo. Clouds along the sightline to the less distant half of the Sculptor Group, show anomalous properties. We argue that these clouds represent halo material, and are not distant Sculptor Group clouds. This result has significant implications for the hypothesis that there might exist distant, massive HVCs within the Local Group. A catalog of Southern anomalous-velocity HI clouds at Decl. < +2 deg is presented, based on data from the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS). The improved sensitivity (5sigma: T_B = 0.04 K) and resolution (15.5') of the HIPASS data results in a substantial increase in the number of individual clouds (1956, as well as 41 galaxies) compared to previous surveys. Most high-velocity emission features, HVCs, have a filamentary morphology and are loosely organized into large complexes extending over tens of degrees. In addition, 179 compact and isolated anomalous-velocity objects, CHVCs, are identified based on their size and degree of isolation. 25% of the CHVCs originally classified by Braun & Burton (1999) are reclassified. Both the entire population of high-velocity emission features and the CHVCs alone have typical HI masses of ~ 4.5 D(kpc)^2 solar masses and have similar slopes for their column density and flux distributions. On the other hand, the CHVCs appear to be clustered and the population can be broken up into three spatially distinct groups, while the entire population of clouds is more uniformly distributed with a significant percentage aligned with the Magellanic Stream. The median velocities are V_GSR = -38 km/s for the CHVCs and -30 km/s for all of the anomalous-velocity clouds. Based on the catalog sizes, high-velocity features cover 19% of the southern sky and CHVCs cover 1%.
