The mandible size variability including sexual size dimorphism (SSD) of the cave lion (Panthera spelaea) in the Pleistocene of Northern Eurasia time has been studied basing on the univariate and multivariate statistical analyses of 76 specimens from 43 localities. It has been confirmed that SSD in adult P. spelaea, as well as in extant P. leo, is the dominant form of group variability of mandible and, to somewhat lesser extent, of variability of cheek teeth. The lowest degree of SSD has been found in a relatively small Beringian subspecies, P. spelaea vereshchagini. The geographical variability of the cave lion from Western to Eastern Eurasia was not a cline at least in the Late Pleistocene. Our results confirm a decrease in overall mandible size from the Middle Pleistocene to the Late Pleistocene over a large part of the species' range. We speculate that evolutionary changes in mandible size, lower canines or cheek teeth may have proceeded at different rates, allometry and probable heterochrony. Our results have added a new evidence to support the subspecies status of the Beringian lion (P. spelaea vereshchagini), but they are insufficient for other decisions on cave lion taxonomy at the subspecies level. Numerous small mammal localities assigned to the beginning of the Late Middle Pleistocene (Holstein, Likhvin, Hoxne Interglacial) were discovered in Europe during the last years. The stratigraphical position of a number of these faunas and the regional differences are discussed in the paper. The new Likhvin small mammal locality Rybnaya Sloboda (Lower Kama basin, Volga basin, Russia) is the easternmost site of this age in Europe. The rich fauna was discovered in fluvial deposits of the 3rd terrace (III) of the Kama River; sediments that are covered by loess deposits with a series of paleosols. The Rybnaya Sloboda fauna includes 16 species of insectivores, lagomorphs and rodents. Remains of the archaic water vole Arvicola cantianus and the Middle Pleistocene steppe lemming Lagurus transiens dominate the fossils assemblage. The evolutional level of the Arvicolinae remains permits the assignment to the Gun'kovian small mammal assemblage and a correlation with the Likhvin Interglacial (MIS 11) (∼424–374 ka BP). The ecological features of the small mammal assemblage indicate a forest-steppe landscape in the lower Kama basin during MIS 11. The comparison with, and the analysis of numerous European Likhvin (= Holsteinian, = Hoxnian) small mammal faunas indicate a geographical biozonation that shows similarities with the biozonation reconstructed for the Eemian (= Mikulino, MIS 5e) Interglacial. The evolution of species composition and species richness from the end of the Middle Pleistocene to the Middle Holocene (∼200–5 ka, MIS7–MIS1) studied in two Central European bioregional mammal assemblages include 176 chrono-species. The study is based on the list of 745 palaeontological sites and 1604 dated localities. For each region, the descriptive models (non-metric multidimensional scaling technique used) of evolution were obtained for full mammal assemblages as well as particular mammalian "guilds" (carnivorous, large herbivorous, small herbivorous and insectivorous). The models for full assemblages revealed several properties of the evolution process: non-linearity, combination of stationary and nonstationary states, irreversible (evolutionary per se) and reversible changes, threshold like effects accompanying transitions between stationary and non-stationary states, and elements of adaptive dynamics in changing environmental conditions. The evolutionary trajectories of mammal "guilds" have the same properties but differ significantly from each other and their relative complexity is no less than the trajectories of full mammal assemblages. Hence, the evolution shows emergent property and irreducibility of complexity at different structural levels of an assemblage. Throughout MIS7–MIS1 the regional faunas responded to global climate changes (δ 18O used as temperature variable), but had various contents, directions, consequences mediated by current species composition and geographic positions in relation to the Saale and the Weichsel continental ice sheets. The study shows a time/spatial invariance (scale-invariant property) of species richness for the stationary states of fauna evolution (especially during MIS3), which is described by a power law function. A mammal assemblage evolution is discussed within the framework of concept of open non-linear self-organising complex quasi-deterministic system with an ability of adaptive behaviour. Internal organisation of such systems justifies their existence and evolution in the area at a borderline between order and chaos and thus their evolution is intrinsically unpredictable. In the Late Pleistocene the formation of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet (SIS) caused a wide periglacial zone in Europe. The effects of environmental conditions in the periglacial zone on small mammal assemblages have not yet been studied in detail on a European scale during maximum extension of the SIS. In this study, the impact of the SIS on the qualitative/quantitative composition of European small mammal local faunas (LFs) was studied for the GS-2.1 (∼22.9–17.48 a b2k, final of the Last Glacial Maximum). We analysed 55 LFs between 0°E and 55°E and between 45°N and 55°N and proved that the variations in their compositions contained information about spatial variation in environmental/geographical variables, including distance from the putative edge of the SIS and the shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean and, to a lesser extent, the altitudes of localities. Based on various criteria, we concluded that the impact of the SIS on the spatial variability of compositions of LSs was not as significant as the effects of air masses over the Atlantic Ocean, but more important than altitude above sea level. It was most probable that the impact of the SIS, considered independently of the Atlantic Ocean, contributed in part to a latitudinal gradient of the mean annual temperature formation, while the Atlantic Ocean air masses predominantly shaped a sectoral west-east gradient of temperature and precipitation. We compared the geographic patterns of compositions of species belonging to LFs in the past and present and concluded that the effect of the Atlantic air masses is the main physical factor that forms the spatial pattern in modern European small mammals and that a similar impact prevailed during the GS-2.1. Qualitative and quantitative differences in the distribution of small mammal species in LFs and in diversity indices between the GS-2.1 and the present time were investigated. We concluded that it is possible that in the GS-2.1 narrow/fragmented ranges dominated, whereas in the Holocene the proportion of small mammal species with wide ranges and intrazonal species increased significantly in the composition of faunas. Additional evidence is provided to support the hypothesis of the existence of the "Carpathian refuge". In the GS-2.1 we attributed the lack of correlation between species richness with mean annual temperature and precipitation. A spatial mosaic of glacial/cryptic refuges conceals a positive correlation between species richness and distance from the putative edge of the SIS. Morphometric variation in 26 characters of 245 skulls of the marbled polecat ( Vormela peregusna ) was studied across the distribution range. Morphological diversity was low with respect to both the size and the shape of the skull. The sexual size dimorphism of cranial characters in V. peregusna was low compared with other similar-sized mustelids. This finding may be a result of more specialized behaviour, resulting in less intra-specific competition with respect to habitat and food selection. Analysis of the geographic variation of skulls revealed two morphological groups – western and eastern. These groups were treated as distinct subspecies in this study. Nominotypical V. p. peregusna ( Güldenstädt, 1770 ) (syn. sarmatica , euxina ) is found in southern and eastern Europe, Asia Minor and Caucasus. The eastern subspecies V. p . koshewnikowi Satunin, 1910 (syn. alpherakii , chinensis , negans , obscura , ornata , pallidior , syriaca , and tedshenika ) is found south and east of the Middle East, in Middle and Central Asia and eastward to China. Our data revealed a gradual decrease in the morphological diversity in Vormela skulls from west to east in the distribution range. This phenomenon may be explained by the later origin of the eastern subclusters of the marbled polecat. The pattern of geographic variation revealed in this study may reflect the Pleistocene history of the species range formation, rather than a relationship to climate conditions throughout the modern species range. Abstract: Morphological and molecular data suggest the existence of several taxa of cave bears, which were found to belong to three major mitochondrial haplogroups: kudarensis (kudarensis), spelaeus (ladinicus, eremus, spelaeus), and ingressus (uralensis, ingressus, kanivetz). An analysis of craniometrical variability was carried out based on 20 measurements of 279 skulls from 40 European, Ural, and Caucasian localities, in order to investigate morphological similarity/dissimilarity of these taxa in a multivariate approach. The craniometrical analysis divides cave bears into two groups: small cave bears and large cave bears. The group of small bears consists of rossicus/uralensis and ladinicus. In some skull proportions, these taxa display intermediate position between brown and cave bears, i.e. presumably possessing archaic characters of their common ancestor. The group of large bears includes taxa with more specialized skulls. An early radiation within this group is demonstrated by kudarensis which probably ranged across Asia, and deningeri which occupied Europe east to the Ural Mountains. In its craniometrical characters, kanivetz from the Late Pleistocene of the Urals resembles deningeri. Other taxa of large cave bears (spelaeus, ingressus and eremus) reveal further evolution of cranial characters, being similar in the skull proportions. The level of difference between spelaeus and ingressus does not exceed that between subspecies of the recent brown bear, such as Ursus arctos beringianus and U. a. piscator. The examined isolated population of large cave bears from Volga River region (Zhiguli Hills) is similar to ingressus. Thus, based on the craniometrical data, the following species of cave bear are recognized: Ursus kudarensis (with the subspecies U. k. praekudarensis and U. k. kudarensis), U. deningeri (several subspecies), U. rossicus (with subspecies U. r. rossicus and U. r. uralensis), U. ladinicus, U. spelaeus (with subspecies U. s. spelaeus, U. s. eremus, U. s. ingressus, and, provisionally, U. s. kanivetz,). Uncertain chronology and data scarcity have impeded realistic reconstructions of megafauna extinctions in the Late Pleistocene in several key regions of the Northern Hemisphere such as Beringia. This region was a refuge for several plants, animals during the extremely cold period of the Late Pleistocene in high Arctic latitudes. The woolly rhinoceros was one of the most widespread members of the megafauna in the Asiatic part of the region (West Beringia) between ∼60 and 14 cal ka BP. This study is based on statistical analyses of 20 newly obtained and 110 previously published radiocarbon dates. We found three large "waves" in the woolly rhinoceros range changes separated between themselves by the cold climatic Heinrich events (H2 and H4). The chronology of the woolly rhinoceros was overlaid on data of environmental changes obtained basing on 504 generalized early published pollen spectra throughout the species range and, separately, outside the range – in the east of the West Beringia realm and in East Beringia. In general, milder environmental conditions of MIS3 (57–29 ka BP) were more favourable for the woolly rhinoceros than the harsh conditions of the Last Glacial Maximum (∼29–15 cal ka BP) in MIS2. We have concluded that the feed base was unlikely the main limiting factor in the distribution of woolly rhinoceros in Western Beringia, and other ecological factors (temperature/precipitation) determined the species range and its oscillation over the MIS3–MIS2 stages. Based on summarizing available data and this research, we have proposed that there were sets of different reasons that prevented the woolly rhinoceros migration to the east of Beringia in different periods of the Late Pleistocene. Abrupt woolly rhinoceros extinction in Beringia between 15 and 14 cal ka BP coincided with the Bölling warming and the Older Dryas cooling. The ecological situation just before the extinction, associated with climate warming, moisture increasing and shrub tundra expansion in West Beringia, was qualitatively different from previous cases of the species range degradations in the second half of the Late Pleistocene. This multi-proxy study of woolly rhinoceros chronology provide a new basis for further understanding of its population history, demography, and biology in Beringia before its extinction. The analysis of small mammal and freshwater mollusk remains from the fluvial deposits of VI terrace of Dniester R. in Levada section (Moldova, Transnistria) revealed the main characteristic of species composition and evolutionary level of these remains and permitted their placement in the stratigraphic scale of Middle Pleistocene faunas of Eastern Europe. The Levada fauna corresponds to the same stage as the fauna from the fluvial deposits of VI terrace of Dniester in stratotype of Tiraspolian faunistic complex in Kolkotova Balka section. These faunas existed between the Early Tiraspolian faunas which correlate to the second part of MIS 19 and with MIS 18, and the Late Tiraspolian (MIS 16 and MIS 15). Mimomys savini, Lagurus transiens, Microtus (Terricola) arvalidens, Lasiopodomys (Stenocranius) gregaloides are the species most characteristic of these faunas. The Levada fauna reflects interglacial climate conditions. The faunas of this evolutionary level existed during the second part of the Iliinskian Interglacial of the Russian Plain and during the Cromer Interglacial 2 of West Europe. The freshwater mollusks from Levada section (Viviparus tiraspolitanus Pavl., V. subcrasus Lung., Lithoglyphus naticoides C. Pf. and others) reflects a warm climate close to that of the Mediterranean. Genetically verified occurrence points were taken from our data and from publications (Neumann I et al. i [51]; Banaszek I et al. i [8]; Hegyeli I et al. i [32]; Melosik I et al. i [48]; Korbut I et al. i [39]). Later, Korbut I et al. i ([39]) argued this assumption and supposed that "hamsters survived in eastern steppe refugia from which they migrated westward through northern European plains or through the southern route around the Carpathians to Central and Western Europe" (Neumann I et al. i [51]; Banaszek I et al. i [7]). Korbut I et al. i also discussed the potential contraction of the hamster distribution during both Saalian Glacial and Eemian interstadial (Korbut I et al. i [39]). The bins of the scale for MIS7-MIS6 correspond to nomenclature suggested by Railsback I et al. i ([59]), MIS5 by Shackleton I et al. i ([67]), and Otvos ([53]) and MIS4 by Scrucca I et al. i ([66]). Moreover, the common hamster started to rapidly colonize some cities in Western Europe (Schmelzer & Millesi [65]; Feoktistova I et al. i [25]; Flamand I et al. i [27]), in Eastern Europe (Canády [13]; Feoktistova I et al. i [24]; Buczek [12]), and Kazakhstan (Feoktistova I et al. i [20]).
