3. ProVoc: An App to Train Vocabulary Depth in Order to Foster Children's Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Many studies have demonstrated the crucial role of vocabulary in predicting reading performance in general. More recent work has indicated that one particular facet of vocabulary (its depth) is more closely related to language comprehension, especially inferential comprehension. On this basis, we developed a training application to specifically improve vocabulary depth. The objective of this study was to test the effectiveness of a mobile application designed to improve vocabulary depth. The effectiveness of this training was examined on 3rd and 4th grade children's vocabulary (breadth and depth), decoding and comprehension performances. A "randomized waiting-list control" paradigm was used in which an experimental group first received the intervention during the first 4 weeks (between pretest and post-test1), thereafter, a waiting control group received the training for the next 4 weeks (between postest1 and posttest2). Results showed that the developed application led to significant improvements in terms of vocabulary depth performance, as well as a significant transfer effect to reading comprehension. However, we did not observe such a beneficial effect on either vocabulary breadth or written word identification. These results are discussed in terms of the links between vocabulary depth and comprehension, and the opportunities the app presents for remedying language comprehension deficits in children.

6. Profiling Writers: Analysis of Writing Dynamics among College Students

Abstract

We studied the processes involved in synthesis writing, focusing on planning, editing and self-regulation strategies. The aims of the study were a) to analyse the temporal distribution of cognitive strategies and self-regulation across the different phases of writing, b) to identify different writing approaches (i.e., profiles), and c) to establish the relationship between writing behavior and writing performance. Twenty-seven humanities students, who were 23 years of age on average, were asked to produce a synthesis. The methodology combined videotaped observations, a think aloud protocol, and an assessment of writing performance, and specific instruments were constructed to collect the data. Algorithms were also calculated to determine the transitions between different types of writing behavior. Results showed that the nature, frequency, and duration of planning, editing, and self-regulation strategies varied according to the phase (prewriting or writing), and the most remarkable changes occurred in the final period of writing. Moreover, although the college students' functioning generally reflected a novice approach, there were significant differences between the three writer profiles we found, namely "precise transcriber, active reviser", and "spontaneous writer". Finally, writing performance was positively and significantly correlated with writing strategies such as taking notes and reading drafts.

Abstract

International audience; The objective of this study was to examine age-related effects on behavioral performance and metabolic activity of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in a dual-task paradigm involving fine-motor control and executive-function control. Thirty-one adults (20 ± 1.1 years) and 33 older adults (70.7 ± 5.1 years) performed, separately and then concurrently, a modified Fitts task on targets of different sizes (Index of Difficulty: ID = 3; 4; 5 bits) and the random number generation task (RNG). Movement time (MT) and count score (CS) were the dependent variables for the modified Fitts task and the RNG task, respectively. Relative changes in concentrations of oxyhemoglobin [HbO2] and deoxyhemoglobin [HHb] were recorded continuously on the left and right PFCs, with near-infrared spectroscopy (Oxymon MkIII-Artinis) with an acquisition rate of 10 Hz. Our results showed large motor dual-task cost in seniors compared to young adults. Regarding hemodynamic activity, we have observed a prominent activation of the PFC in the young adults compared to the seniors during the dual-task condition.

Abstract

International audience; The aims of this study were (1) to examine the consistency of the control condition using a test-retest procedure and (2) to more closely examine the hemodynamic variations as a function of task complexity and their relationships with subjective and behavioral data. Nineteen young adults [18-22 years] performed a working memory task (n-back) with three levels of complexity (1, 2, 3-back) and a control task before (0-back1) and after (0-back2) these three levels of complexity. During each condition, an eight-channel continuous-wave fNIRS device (Oxymon MkIII-Artinis) continuously measured concentrations changes of [HbO2] and [HHb] in the right and left lateral prefrontal cortices (PFC). Behavioral performance was assessed by response time (RT in ms) and response accuracy and subjective perceived difficulty was assessed by the DP-15 [1]. The findings of the present study showed that participants improved their behavioral performance from 0-back1 to 0-back2, although their [HbO2] decreased significantly in both PFC hemispheres. Furthermore, as shown by Molteni et al. [2], participants’ behavioral performance significantly decreased as a function of task-complexity. As regards to the hemodynamic data, the results showed complex activation patterns. But overall, activation in PFC increased as function of complexity. Our results highlight the importance of stabilizing both behavioral performance and hemodynamic variations in the control condition to ensure correct comparisons with the experimental conditions. They also show the interest of using fNIRS to discriminate the activation of the PFC as a function of cognitive load.

International audience; Plusieurs études ont mis en évidence que l’activité physique (AP) peut contrecarrer les effets délétères du vieillissement cérébral (voir Kelly et al., 2014). Selon l’hypothèse neurotrophique, l’AP participerait au maintien de la santé cérébrale en permettant une libération du facteur neurotrophique dérivé du cerveau (BDNF). Cependant, le polymorphisme Val66Met du gène du BDNF (BDNF Val66Met) régule la quantité de BDNF libérée dans le cerveau et semble être impliqué dans les effets délétères du vieillissement. Il a été montré que l’AP magnifie les effets de l’allèle Val sur la mémoire épisodique chez des seniors (Canivet et al., 2015). De ce fait, nous pouvons penser que l’AP pourrait favoriser l’effet de ce polymorphisme sur une fonction cognitiveparticulièrement affectée par l’AP et l’âge, l’inhibition (Gajewski & Falkenstein, 2016). Nous faisons l’hypothèse que les sujets actifs Val homozygotes auront de meilleures performances d’inhibition que leurs homologues inactifs.

Abstract

A simple formula to theoretically predict the oligonucleotide that would form a triplex on a given DNA sequence is presented. The formula could be applied to design triplex-forming oligonucleotides (TFOs) for antigene applications as biotechnological tools or to probe the mechanisms of protein acting on DNA or as sequence-specific DNA binders to control gene expression.

33. Working Memory, Cognitive Load andCardiorespiratory Fitness: Testing the CRUNCHModel with Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

Abstract

The present study aimed to examine the effects of chronological age and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) on cognitive performance and prefrontal cortex activity, and to test the compensation-related utilization of neural circuits hypothesis (CRUNCH). A total of 19 young adults (18⁻22 years) and 37 older ones (60⁻77 years) with a high or low CRF level were recruited to perform a working memory updating task under three different cognitive load conditions. Prefrontal cortex hemodynamic responses were continuously recorded using functional near-infrared spectroscopy, and behavioral performances and perceived difficulty were measured. Results showed that chronological age had deleterious effects on both cognitive performance and prefrontal cortex activation under a higher cognitive load. In older adults, however, higher levels of CRF were related to increased bilateral prefrontal cortex activation patterns that allowed them to sustain better cognitive performances, especially under the highest cognitive load.
