5. A Phase Variable Approach for Improved Rhythmic and Non-Rhythmic Control of a Powered Knee-Ankle Prosthesis

Abstract

Although there has been recent progress in control of multi-joint prosthetic legs for rhythmic tasks such as walking, control of these systems for non-rhythmic motions and general real-world maneuvers is still an open problem. In this article, we develop a new controller that is capable of both rhythmic (constant-speed) walking, transitions between speeds and/or tasks, and some common volitional leg motions. We introduce a new piecewise holonomic phase variable, which, through a finite state machine, forms the basis of our controller. The phase variable is constructed by measuring the thigh angle, and the transitions in the finite state machine are formulated through sensing foot contact along with attributes of a nominal reference gait trajectory. The controller was implemented on a powered knee-ankle prosthesis and tested with a transfemoral amputee subject, who successfully performed a wide range of rhythmic and non-rhythmic tasks, including slow and fast walking, quick start and stop, backward walking, walking over obstacles, and kicking a soccer ball. Use of the powered leg resulted in clinically significant reductions in amputee compensations for rhythmic tasks (including vaulting and hip circumduction) when compared to use of the take-home passive leg. In addition, considerable improvements were also observed in the performance for non-rhythmic tasks. The proposed approach is expected to provide a better understanding of rhythmic and non-rhythmic motions in a unified framework, which in turn can lead to more reliable control of multi-joint prostheses for a wider range of real-world tasks.

Abstract

Sunflower trypsin inhibitor (SFTI) is a 14-amino-acid bicyclic peptide that contains a single internal disulfide bond. We initially constructed chimeras of SFTI with N-terminal secretion signals from the Escherichia coli OmpA and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ToxA, but only detected small amounts of protease inhibition resulting from these constructs. A substantially higher degree of protease inhibition was detected from a C-terminal SFTI fusion with E. coli YebF, which radiated more than a centimeter from an individual colony of E. coli using a culture-based inhibitor assay. Inhibitory activity was further improved in YebF-SFTI fusions by the addition of a trypsin cleavage signal immediately upstream of SFTI, and resulted in production of a 14-amino-acid, disulfide-bonded SFTI free in the culture supernatant. To assess the potential of the secreted SFTI to protect the ability of a cytotoxic protein to kill tumor cells, we utilized a tumor-selective form of the Pseudomonas ToxA (OTG-PE38K) alone and expressed as a polycistronic construct with YebF-SFTI in the tumor-targeted Salmonella VNP20009. When we assessed the ability of toxin-containing culture supernatants to kill MDA-MB-468 breast cancer cells, the untreated OTG-PE38K was able to eliminate all detectable tumor cells, while pretreatment with trypsin resulted in the complete loss of anticancer cytotoxicity. However, when OTG-PE38K was co-expressed with YebF-SFTI, cytotoxicity was completely retained in the presence of trypsin. These data demonstrate SFTI chimeras are secreted in a functional form and that co-expression of protease inhibitors with therapeutic proteins by tumor-targeted bacteria has the potential to enhance the activity of therapeutic proteins by suppressing their degradation within a proteolytic environment.

El tipo de estudio que engloba esta propuesta de marketing es el descriptivo, con método inductivo, se emplearon la fuentes primarias y secundarias, como entrevistas, herramientas y técnicas que permitieron darle abordaje al planteamiento de la investigación.

Este proyecto se adopta debido a la importancia de contar con información precisa sobre las precipitaciones en zonas rurales que actualmente no se obtiene, y que es fundamental para las aplicaciones móviles de entregas a domicilio y otras aplicaciones similares. Aunque las aplicaciones móviles de entregas a domicilio son populares en las principales ciudades, tienen poca cobertura en zonas rurales y ciudades más pequeñas debido a la falta de información sobre las condiciones meteorológicas en estas áreas. Variables como la lluvia son cruciales para calcular el costo de los servicios de entrega. Además, cabe recalcar que empresas como Rappi han empezado a utilizar la variable de lluvia para tomar decisiones que impactan en las tarifas y la asignación de pedidos., This project is adopted due to the importance of having accurate information on rainfall in rural areas that is currently not available, and which is essential for mobile home delivery applications and other similar applications. Although mobile delivery apps are popular in major cities, they have poor coverage in rural areas and smaller cities due to a lack of information about weather conditions in these areas. Variables such as rainfall are crucial in calculating the cost of delivery services. En el presente trabajo se desarrolla y construye un prototipo funcional de un huerto hidropónico vertical automatizado capaz de trabajar en exteriores e interiores. Además del prototipo, se ha generado un panel de control que permite al usuario monitorear y controlar el huerto de forma remota, así como notificarle mediante alarmas la necesidad de hacer una intervención física. El prototipo es totalmente autosuficiente mediante el uso de placas solares y baterías. Igualmente, está construido con materiales reutilizables en la medida de lo posible y con optimización de los materiales adquiridos., In this study, a functional prototype of an automated hydroponic garden capable of working outdoors is developed and built. Abstract

La presente investigación es un estudio de caso aplicado a la empresa Autind Company S.A.S. Empresa dedicada a los servicios de ingeniería eléctrica con sede administrativa en la ciudad de Bucaramanga. Esta investigación tuvo en cuenta 5 áreas de estudio, correspondientes al marketing, el estado de la gerencia financiera, sobre las estrategias de negociación, a cerda de las habilidades gerenciales y la gerencia de proyectos. Cada una de las áreas tuvo un instrumento de recolección, en unos casos se aplicaron encuestas con la herramienta Google forms, en otros, entrevistas estructuradas y un examen diagnóstico. El objetivo principal de la investigación fue realizar un diagnóstico detallado del estado de la empresa. Entre los principales hallazgos se encuentra que se la empresa no cuenta con un marketing digital que le permita generar un conocimiento de marca, en lo financiero se recomienda brindar apoyo en talento humano a ésta área y es una empresa con solidez y rentable, es una empresa en la que se puede mejorar en la preparación de las negociaciones, obtuvo un puntaje de 21 puntos de 46 en el diagnóstico de estrategias de negociación de acuerdo al instrumento aplicado lo que implica que en este caso para el negociador se encuentra en un nivel intermedio al momento de realizar actividades de negociación pues, se encuentra en un lugar en el cual le resulta agradable negociar, el gerente es una persona con habilidades blandas y posibles opciones de mejora en cuanto al liderazgo. The present investigation is a case study applied to the company Autind Company S.A.S. Company dedicated to electrical engineering services with administrative headquarters in the city of Bucaramanga. This research took into account 5 areas of study, corresponding to marketing, the state of financial management, negotiation strategies, management skills and project management. Each of the areas had a collection instrument, in some cases surveys were applied with the Google forms tool, in others, structured interviews and a diagnostic test. The main objective of the investigation was to carry out a detailed diagnosis of the state of the company. 31. Development and First-Year Outcomes of an NSF-Funded Summer Research Internship Program to Engage Community College Students in Engineering Research.

Abstract

Increasing the recruitment and retention of engineering students is essential to produce sufficient professional engineers for continued US economic growth and competitiveness in today's technology sectors. Undergraduate engineering research experience has been identified as an effective approach to increasing student engagement, academic performance, and retention rates. Community colleges play a significant role in today's US higher education; however, conducting basic research at community colleges is challenging due to limited resources and opportunities. With support from the National Science Foundation's Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Hispanic-Serving Institutions (IUSE-HSI) Program, a collaborative summer research internship program between a public four-year degree institution and two local community colleges provided community college students with impactful engineering research opportunities and hands-on experiences. In summer 2022, the 8-week research internship program engaged nine community college students from diverse backgrounds to participate in four engineering research projects across several engineering disciplines. Each project team was supervised by at least a faculty advisor and a student peer mentor enrolled in the four-year university. The research project outcomes of the internship, as well as the external evaluation results, have shown that the summer research internship program delivered its objectives to have student interns gain valuable engineering research experience, strengthened their confidence in problem solving, and reinforced their interest in pursuing an engineering degree. Furthermore, the program improved the students' technical skillset, team collaboration, time management, and communication skills. 32. Strengthening Student Motivation and Resilience through Research and Advising.

Abstract

At San Francisco State University, a Hispanic Serving Institute and a Primarily Undergraduate Institution, 67% of engineering students are from ethnic minority groups, with only 27% of Hispanic students retained and graduated in their senior year. Additionally, only 14% of students reported full-time employment secured at the time of graduation. Of these secured jobs, only 54% were full-time positions (40+ hours a week). To improve the situation, San Francisco State University, in collaboration with two local community colleges, Skyline and Cañada Colleges, was recently funded by the National Science Foundation through a Hispanic Serving Institute Improving Undergraduate STEM Education Strengthening Student Motivation and Resilience through Research and Advising program to enhance undergraduate engineering education and build capacity for student success. This project will use a data-driven and evidence-based approach to identify the barriers to the success of underrepresented minority students and to generate new knowledge on the best practices for increasing students' retention and graduation rates, selfefficacy, professional development, and workforce preparedness. Three objectives underpin this overall goal. The first is to develop and implement a Summer Research Internship Program together with community college partners. The second is to establish an HSI Engineering Success Center to provide students with academic resources, networking opportunities with industry, and career development tools. The third is to develop resources for the professional development of faculty members, including Summer Faculty Teaching Workshops, an Inclusive Teaching and Mentoring Seminar Series, and an Engineering Faculty Learning Community. Qualitative and quantitative approaches are used to assess the project outcomes using a survey instrument and interview protocols developed by an external evaluator. This paper discusses an overview of the project and its first-year implementation. The focus is placed on the introduction and implementation of the several main project components, namely the Engineering Success Center, Summer Research Internship Program, and Faculty Summer Teaching Workshop. 33. Niveles y efectos de la consanguinidad en variables de comportamiento durante la tienta y la lidia en dos ganaderías de reses bravas de Colombia

En el estudio se estimaron los niveles y las tendencias de la consanguinidad en variables de comportamiento durante la tienta y la lidia en dos ganaderías colombianas de reses bravas: Ernesto González Caicedo (EGC) - Popayán, Cauca, encaste Santacoloma; y Guachicono (GUA) - Bolívar, Cauca, Colombia, encaste Parladé. Se analizaron los pedigríes de 2.094 animales EGC nacidos entre 1918 y 2007 y 963 GUA, nacidos entre 1928 y 2005. Los coeficientes de consanguinidad de los bovinos se obtuvieron usando el Proc Inbreed del programa SAS v. 9.1.3. Se estudiaron además de las notas del ganadero, las variables propias y comunes a las faenas de tienta y de lidia. Los promedios y las desviaciones estándar de la consanguinidad en EGC y GUA fueron 4.9±6.6 y 4.2±4.2% para todos los animales, 4.5±5.8 y 6.0±3.4% para la última época estudiada, y 10.6±5.8 y 6.5±3.5% considerando sólo los consanguíneos. Se encontraron efectos positivos en las variables responsables de 'toreabilidad' y estilo, y depresivos en la fuerza de los animales. La consanguinidad actual en ambas ganaderías es mediana, sin embargo debe diseñarse un plan de apareamiento.

Abstract

Resaltando la actual tendencia que tienen las empresas colombianas por certificarse en las normas ISO, especialmente en la ISO 9001 que reglamenta los parámetros de calidad de un producto o servicio, se desarrolla el presente ensayo que busca mostrar los efectos generados en una empresa tras la implementación de un SGC a través de la descripción del caso propio de la empresa Cusol Servicios y Soluciones S.A.S. Antes de llevar a cabo esta descripción se plantean tres capítulos importantes: definición e importancia de un sistema de gestión de calidad, en el cual se describen cada uno de los procesos que hacen parte del ciclo PHVA (planificar, hacer, verificar y actuar); correcta planeación de una obra haciendo énfasis en el cumplimiento de los tiempos de ejecución, capítulo en el que se describe la importancia de una buena administración y planificación de una obra para garantizar el éxito económico del mismo ; y un panorama general de la implementación de las normas ISO en empresas colombianas, en el cual se describe el crecimiento en la implementación que han tenido las normas ISO en las empresas colombianas a lo largo del siglo XXI. Finalmente, se presenta el caso propio de la empresa tameña Cusol Servicios y Soluciones S.A.S en el cual se describen todos los cambios y efectos recibidos por la empresa durante y después de la implementación del sistema, así como el comportamiento administrativo y financiero que presentó luego del mismo. Abstract

Para realizar una retroalimentación efectiva durante la enseñanza del inglés, se debe tener en cuenta los aspectos positivos y negativos que ayuden a los estudiantes a mejorar su habilidad de producción oral. Esta investigación consistió en el diseño de un sistema de estrategias para retroalimentar efectivamente las actividades que ayuden al desarrollo de las habilidades productivas (speaking) de los estudiantes en el curso inglés V de la Corporación Universitaria del Caribe mencionada de ahora en adelante como “campo de estudio”, lo cual les permitió conocer específicamente las palabras, sonidos, entonación u otros aspectos en los que requerían ahondar más en la práctica para alcanzar las competencias establecidas en el nivel B2 que deben alcanzar. A través de la investigación titulada “retroalimentación a través de Ambientes Virtuales en la enseñanza del inglés”, se detectaron estrategias de participación activa de los estudiantes en los encuentros sincrónicos, así como acciones de mejora para poder retroalimentarlos en el desarrollo de la habilidad oral en un tiempo real. El objetivo principal de esta propuesta pedagógica fue describir las estrategias de retroalimentación que mediadas por Ambientes Virtuales de Aprendizaje (AVA) para a promover el desarrollo de la habilidad oral en los estudiantes, para lo cual se empleó un enfoque cualitativo. Dentro de los hallazgos encontrados, se evidenciaron las siguientes tres categorías que permitieron un mejor análisis y discusión: propósito de la retroalimentación, metodologías de retroalimentación y, por último, proceso de retroalimentación y coherencia curricular. Lo anterior, se fundamentó en los lineamientos que hacen referencia a los diferentes niveles de desarrollo curricular para la enseñanza del inglés como el Marco Común Europeo, los resultados de la prueba saber pro en las competencias de lenguas extranjeras, el Modelo Articulado en Competencias y Resultados de Aprendizaje (MACRA) entre otros. In order to provide effective feedback on English teaching, it is necessary to take into account the positive and negative aspects that help students to improve their oral production skills. This research aims to design a system of strategies to provide feedback in activities that help the development of the productive skills (speaking) in students in the English V course of the Caribbean University Corporation, which allowed them to know specifically the words, sounds, intonation or other aspects in which they required to delve more in practice to achieve the competencies established at level B2 that they must achieve. Through the research “Feedback through Virtual Environments for English Foreign Language Teaching EFL", strategies of active participation of students in synchronous encounters were detected, as well as improvement actions to be able to provide feedback in the development of oral skills in real-time. The main objective of this pedagogical proposal was to describe the feedback strategies mediated by Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) to promote the development of oral skills in students, for which a qualitative approach was used. Among the findings found, the following three categories were evidenced that allowed a better analysis and discussion: purpose of the feedback, feedback methodologies, and, finally, feedback process and curricular coherence. The foregoing was based on the guidelines that refer to the different levels of curricular development for the teaching of English such as the Common European Framework, the results of the knowledge pro test in foreign language competencies, the Articulated Model in Competences and Results of Learning (MACRA) among others. Así, este trabajo busca hallar el nivel umbral de vencimiento de la cartera que podría llevar al sistema bancario a situaciones de inestabilidad por una caída en la rentabilidad. Mediante un modelo de alertas tempranas para el periodo 2002-2019, se encuentra que, al optimizar la utilidad de un policymaker que está interesado en emitir alertas cuando el vencimiento de cartera afecta la rentabilidad del sistema bancario, se encuentra que el umbral óptimo del indicador de calidad de cartera es 4%. In Colombia, it has not been frequently evaluated whether the level of non-peforming loan, measured with the traditional indicator, is close to the “level of pain” that would put at rik the banking system profitability. Thus, this work seeks to find the threshold level of non-performing loan indicator that could lead the banking system to instability situations due to a drop in profitability. Using an early warning model for 2002-2019 data, it is found that, by optimizing the usefulness of a policymaker who is interested in issuing alerts when non-performing loan affects banking system profitability, the optimal threshold of the non-performing loan indicator is 4%. Abstract

This paper introduces a hands-on laboratory curriculum for an undergraduate mechatronics course that delivers a team-based collaborative student experience for remote learning. COVID-19 pandemic created unexpected challenges for educators, where in-person teachings had to quickly transition to remote learning. This significantly impacted learning outcomes for handson laboratory courses by students not having access to laboratory equipment and the difficulty to follow the education practice "learn by doing" in the confines of their home. A remote laboratory curriculum is introduced with a series of hands-on mechatronic labs. Three individual student labs introduce how to operate a microcontroller, process infrared sensor signals, and program digital communication displays. Then two team-based collaborative labs explore how students can transmit/receive signals to control a servo using an ESP32 microcontroller with wireless communication over a bi-directional shared server. Then a course project on remote teleoperation is introduced for student-to-student collaboration at home. The learning experience gave students insight into a growing technological area, where teleoperation is in such fields as in-home healthcare, space and ocean exploration, and human-machine collaboration. Student survey results provided positive feedback on their ability to meet project requirements with the challenges of being at home instead of having an in-person learning environment. 50. The Future of Synbiotics: Rational Formulation and Design.

Abstract

Synbiotics, mixtures of live microbes and substrates selectively utilized by host organisms, are of considerable interest due to their ability to improve gastrointestinal health. However, formulating synbiotics remains challenging, due in part, to the absence of rational strategies to assess these products for synbiotic activities prior to clinical trials. Currently, synbiotics are formulated as either complementary or synergistic. Complementary synbiotics are made by combining probiotics and prebiotics, with each component acting independently and with the combination shown to provide a clinical health benefit. Most commercial synbiotics as well as those used in clinical trials have been of the complementary type. In contrast, synergistic synbiotics require that the added microbe is specifically stimulated or it's persistence or activity are enhanced by the cognate substrate. Although several innovative examples have been described in the past few years based on this principle, in practice, relatively few synbiotic studies have tested for synergism. In this review, selected recent examples of complementary and synergistic synbiotics and the rationale for their formulation will be described. In addition, pre-clinical experimental approaches for identifying combinations that provide a basis for satisfying the requirements for synergism will be discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
