This paper presents LinSBFT, a Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) protocol with the capacity of processing over 2000 smart contract transactions per second in production. LinSBFT applies to a permissionless, public blockchain system, in which there is no public-key infrastructure, based on the classic PBFT with 4 improvements: (\romannumeral1) LinSBFT achieves $O(n)$ worst-case communication volume, in contract to PBFT's $O(n^4)$; (\romannumeral2) LinSBFT rotates the leader of protocol randomly to reduce the risk of denial-of-service attacks on leader; and (\romannumeral3) each run of LinSBFT finalizes one block, which is robust against participants that are honest in one run of the protocol, and dishonest in another, and the set of participants is dynamic, which is update periodically. (\romannumeral4) LinSBFT helps the delayed nodes to catch up via a synchronization mechanism to promise the liveness. Further, in the ordinary case, LinSBFT involves only a single round of voting instead of two in PBFT, which reduces both communication overhead and confirmation time, and employs the \emph{proof-of-stake} scheme to reward all participants. Extensive experiments using data obtained from the Ethereum demonstrate that LinSBFT consistently and significantly outperforms existing in-production BFT protocols for blockchains.

We present an efficient approach to precisely simulate tight binding models with optical lattices, based on programmable digital-micromirror-device (DMD) techniques. Our approach consists of a subroutine of Wegner-flow enabled precise extraction of a tight-binding model for a given optical potential, and a reverse engineering step of adjusting the potential for a targeting model, for both of which we develop classical algorithms to achieve high precision and high efficiency. With renormalization of Wannier functions and high band effects systematically calibrated in our protocol, we show the tight-binding models with programmable onsite energies and tunnelings can be precisely simulated with optical lattices integrated with the DMD techniques. With numerical simulation, we demonstrate that our approach would facilitate quantum simulation of localization physics with unprecedented programmability and atom-based boson sampling for illustration of quantum computational advantage. In recent years, different types of adversarial examples from different fields have emerged endlessly, including purely natural ones without perturbations. A variety of defenses are proposed and then broken quickly. Two fundamental questions need to be asked: What's the reason for the existence of adversarial examples and are adversarial examples unsolvable? In this paper, we will show the reason for the existence of adversarial examples is there are non-isomorphic natural explanations that can all explain data set. Specifically, for two natural explanations of being true and provable, G\"odel's sentence is an adversarial example but ineliminable. It can't be solved by the re-accumulation of data set or the re-improvement of learning algorithm. Finally, from the perspective of computability, we will prove the incomputability for adversarial examples, which are unrecognizable.

Although the emergence of the programmable smart contract makes blockchain systems easily embrace a wider range of industrial areas, how to execute smart contracts efficiently becomes a big challenge nowadays. Due to the existence of Byzantine nodes, the mechanism of executing smart contracts is quite different from that in database systems, so that existing successful concurrency control protocols in database systems cannot be employed directly. Moreover, even though smart contract execution follows a two-phase style, i.e, the miner node executes a batch of smart contracts in the first phase and the validators replay them in the second phase, existing parallel solutions only focus on the optimization in the first phase, but not including the second phase. In this paper, we propose a novel efficient concurrency control scheme which is the first one to do optimization in both phases. Specifically, (i) in the first phase, we give a variant of OCC (Optimistic Concurrency Control) protocol based on {\em batching} feature to improve the concurrent execution efficiency for the miner and produce a schedule log with high parallelism for validators. Also, a graph partition algorithm is devised to divide the original schedule log into small pieces and further reduce the communication cost; and (ii) in the second phase, we give a deterministic OCC protocol to replay all smart contracts efficiently on multi-core validators where all cores can replay smart contracts independently. Theoretical analysis and extensive experimental results illustrate that the proposed scheme outperforms state-of-art solutions significantly.

We study the enhancement of cooperativity in the atom-light interface near a nanophotonic waveguide for application to quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of atomic spins. Here the cooperativity per atom is determined by the ratio between the measurement strength and the decoherence rate. Counterintuitively, we find that by placing the atoms at an azimuthal position where the guided probe mode has the lowest intensity, we increase the cooperativity. This arises because the QND measurement strength depends on the interference between the probe and scattered light guided into an orthogonal polarization mode, while the decoherence rate depends on the local intensity of the probe. Thus, by proper choice of geometry, the ratio of good to bad scattering can be strongly enhanced for highly anisotropic modes. We apply this to study spin squeezing resulting from QND measurement of spin projection noise via the Faraday effect in two nanophotonic geometries, a cylindrical nanofiber and a square waveguide. We find that, with about 2500 atoms and using realistic experimental parameters, $ \sim 6.3 $ and $ \sim 13 $ dB of squeezing can be achieved on the nanofiber and square waveguide, respectively., Comment: 8 pages + 2 pages appendix with 7 figures. We study the strong coupling between photons and atoms that can be achieved in an optical nanofiber geometry when the interaction is dispersive. While the Purcell enhancement factor for spontaneous emission into the guided mode does not reach the strong-coupling regime for individual atoms, one can obtain high cooperativity for ensembles of a few thousand atoms due to the tight confinement of the guided modes and constructive interference over the entire chain of trapped atoms. We calculate the dyadic Green's function, which determines the scattering of light by atoms in the presence of the fiber, and thus the phase shift and polarization rotation induced on the guided light by the trapped atoms. The Green's function is related to a full Heisenberg-Langevin treatment of the dispersive response of the quantized field to tensor polarizable atoms. We apply our formalism to quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of the atoms via polarimetry. We study shot-noise-limited detection of atom number for atoms in a completely mixed spin state and the squeezing of projection noise for atoms in clock states. Compared with squeezing of atomic ensembles in free space, we capitalize on unique features that arise in the nanofiber geometry including anisotropy of both the intensity and polarization of the guided modes. We use a first principles stochastic master equation to model the squeezing as function of time in the presence of decoherence due to optical pumping. We find a peak metrological squeezing of ~5 dB is achievable with current technology for ~2500 atoms trapped 180 nm from the surface of a nanofiber with radius a=225 nm., Comment: To be appeared on PRA

This work is a theoretical investigation on the spin-polariton (polarized single photon) entanglement in nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond in order to interpret the results of two landmark experiments reported by the teams of Buckley and Togan in Science and Nature. A Jaynes-Cummings model is applied to analyze the off- and on-resonant dynamics of the electronic spin and polarized photon system. Combined with the analysis on the NV center's electron structure and transition rules, this model consistently explained the Faraday effect, Optical Stark effect, pulse echo technology and energy level engineering technology in the way to realize the spin-polariton entanglement in diamond. All theoretical results are consistent well with the reported phenomena and data.
