Optical interferometric imaging enables astronomical observation at extremely high angular resolution. The necessary optical information for imaging, such as the optical path differences and visibilities, is easy to extract from fringes generated by the combination of two beams. With more than two apertures, the image-plane interference pattern becomes an increasingly indistinguishable mixture of fringe spacings and directions. For decades, the state-of-the-art approaches for obtaining two-aperture fringes from an interferometer array composed of many apertures are limited to pairwise combinations using bulk optics. Here, we derive and demonstrate a fringe disentanglement theory that can digitally transform the interference pattern of N apertures to N(N-1)/2 pairwise fringes without any optics, thus providing straightforward methods of information acquisition for interferometers. We demonstrate applications of our technique by both simulation and experiment, showing that this theory can be used for simultaneously sensing pistons and determining the individual visibilities of all combining apertures. Furthermore, we use the proposed theory to phase a 1.5-meter segmented flat telescope, demonstrating its validity for engineering implementation. We study the one-dimensional non-Hermitian lattices with staggered onsite modulations and nonreciprocal hopping up to the next-nearest-neighboring (NNN) sites. Due to the NNN nonreciprocity, the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) in the system under open boundary conditions (OBC) can be energy dependent, and there will be NHSE edges in the eigenenergy spectrum, which separates the eigenstates localized at the opposite ends of the lattice. We find that the interplay between the nonreciprocal hopping and onsite modulations can reverse the direction of the skin effect and modify the position of the NHSE edge. Moreover, by tuning the system parameters, some of the eigenstates under OBC will become fully extended with the corresponding eigenenergies being imaginary under both open and periodic boundary conditions. Thus, the extended states can coexist with the NHSH in the same system. The NHSE can even be completely dissolved with all the eigenstates being extended when the modulation is imaginary. Although variational quantum algorithms based on parameterized quantum circuits promise to achieve quantum advantages, in the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era, their capabilities are greatly constrained due to limited number of qubits and depth of quantum circuits. Therefore, we may view these variational quantum algorithms as weak learners in supervised learning. Ensemble methods are a general technique in machine learning for combining weak learners to construct a more accurate one. In this paper, we theoretically prove and numerically verify a learning guarantee for variational quantum adaptive boosting (AdaBoost). To be specific, we theoretically depict how the prediction error of variational quantum AdaBoost on binary classification decreases with the increase of the number of boosting rounds and sample size. By employing quantum convolutional neural networks, we further demonstrate that variational quantum AdaBoost can not only achieve much higher accuracy in prediction, but also help mitigate the impact of noise. Quantum kernel methods have been widely recognized as one of promising quantum machine learning algorithms that have potential to achieve quantum advantages. In this paper, we theoretically characterize the power of noisy quantum kernels and demonstrate that under global depolarization noise, for different input data the predictions of the optimal hypothesis inferred by the noisy quantum kernel approximately concentrate towards some fixed value. In particular, we depict the convergence rate in terms of the strength of quantum noise, the size of training samples, the number of qubits, the number of layers affected by quantum noises, as well as the number of measurement shots. Our results show that noises may make quantum kernel methods to only have poor prediction capability, even when the generalization error is small. Thus, we provide a crucial warning to employ noisy quantum kernel methods for quantum computation and the theoretical results can also serve as guidelines when developing practical quantum kernel algorithms for achieving quantum advantages., Comment: 3 figures

We study the one-dimensional non-Hermitian lattices with linearly varying nonreciprocal hopping, where the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) is found to be dissolved gradually as the strength of nonreciprocity increases. The energy spectrum under the open boundary condition is composed of real and imaginary eigenenergies when the nonreciprocal hopping is weak. Interestingly, the real eigenenergies form an equally spaced ladder, and the corresponding eigenstates are localized at the boundary with a Gaussian distribution due to NHSE. By increasing the nonreciprocity, the number of real eigenenergies will decrease while more and more eigenenergies become imaginary. Accompanied by the real-imaginary transition in the spectrum, the eigenstates are shifted from the boundary into the bulk of the lattice. When the nonreciprocity gets strong enough, the whole spectrum will be imaginary and the NHSE disappears completely in the system; i.e., all the eigenstates become Gaussian bound states localized inside the bulk. Variational quantum eigensolvers (VQEs) are one of the most important and effective applications of quantum computing, especially in the current noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era. There are mainly two ways for VQEs: problem-agnostic and problem-specific. For problem-agnostic methods, they often suffer from trainability issues. For problem-specific methods, their performance usually relies upon choices of initial reference states which are often hard to determine. In this paper, we propose an Entanglement-variational Hardware-efficient Ansatz (EHA), and numerically compare it with some widely used ansatzes by solving benchmark problems in quantum many-body systems and quantum chemistry. Our EHA is problem-agnostic and hardware-efficient, especially suitable for NISQ devices and having potential for wide applications. EHA can achieve a higher level of accuracy in finding ground states and their energies in most cases even compared with problem-specific methods. The performance of EHA is robust to choices of initial states and parameters initialization and it has the ability to quickly adjust the entanglement to the required amount, which is also the fundamental reason for its superiority., Comment: 18 pages, 23 figures

Quasicrystals allow for symmetries that are impossible in crystalline materials, such as eight-fold rotational symmetry, enabling the existence of novel higher-order topological insulators in two dimensions without crystalline counterparts. However, it remains an open question whether three-dimensional higher-order topological insulators and Weyl-like semimetals without crystalline counterparts can exist. Here, we demonstrate the existence of a second-order topological insulator by constructing and exploring a three-dimensional model Hamiltonian in a stack of Ammann-Beenker tiling quasicrystalline lattices. The topological phase has eight chiral hinge modes that lead to quantized longitudinal conductances of $4 e^2/h$. We show that the topological phase is characterized by the winding number of the quadrupole moment. We further establish the existence of a second-order topological insulator with time-reversal symmetry, characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant. Finally, we propose a model that exhibits a higher-order Weyl-like semimetal phase, demonstrating both hinge and surface Fermi arcs. We study the Wannier-Stark (WS) localization in one-dimensional amplitude-chirped lattices with the $j$th onsite potential modulated by a function $Fj\cos(2\pi \alpha j)$, where $F$ is the external field with a period determined by $\alpha=p/q$ ($p$ and $q$ are coprime integers). In the Hermitian (or non-Hermitian) systems with real (or imaginary) fields, we can obtain real (or imaginary) WS ladders in the eigenenergy spectrum. In most cases with $q \geq 2$, there are multiple WS ladders with all the eigenstates localized in the strong field limit. However, in the lattices with $q=4$, the energy-dependent localization phenomenon emerges due to the presence of both spatially periodic and linearly increasing behaviors in the onsite potential. About half the number of eigenstates are gathered at the band center and can extend over a wide region or even the full range of the lattice, even when the field becomes very strong. Moreover, in the non-Hermitian lattices with odd $q$, some of the WS ladders become doubly degenerate, where the eigenstates are evenly distributed at two neighboring sites in a wide regime of field strength. We study a one-dimensional system subjected to a linearly varying imaginary vector potential, which is described by the single-particle continuous Schr\"odinger equation and is analytically solved. The eigenenergy spectrum is found to be real under open boundary condition (OBC) but forms a parabola in the complex energy plane under periodic boundary condition (PBC). The eigenstates always exhibit a modulated Gaussian distribution and are all pinned on the same position, which is determined by the imaginary vector potential and boundary conditions. These behaviors are in sharp contrast to the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) in systems with constant imaginary vector potential, where the eigenstates are exponentially distributed under OBC but become extended under PBC. We further demonstrate that even though the spectrum under PBC is an open curve, the Gaussian type of NHSE still has a topological origin and is characterized by a nonvanishing winding number in the PBC spectrum. The energies interior to the parabola can support localized edge states under semi-infinite boundary condition. The corresponding tight-binding lattice models also show similar properties, except that the PBC spectrum forms closed loops. Unique properties of multimode non-Hermitian lattice dynamics can be utilized to construct exponentially sensitive sensors. However, the impact of noise remains unclear, which may severely degrade their sensitivity. We analytically characterize and highlight the impact of loss and gain on the sensitivity revival and stability of non-Hermitian sensors. Defying the general belief that the superiority of quantum sensing will vanish in the presence of loss, we find that by proactively tuning the loss, the exponential sensitivity can be surprisingly regained when the sensing dynamics is stable. Furthermore, we prove that gain is crucial to fully revive the ideally exponential sensitivity and to ensure the stability of non-Hermitian sensing by making a balanced loss and gain. Our paper opens a way to significantly enhance the sensitivity by proactively tuning the loss and gain, which may promote future quantum sensing and quantum engineering., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures

Parameterized quantum circuits (PQCs) have been widely used as a machine learning model to explore the potential of achieving quantum advantages for various tasks. However, the training of PQCs is notoriously challenging owing to the phenomenon of plateaus and/or the existence of (exponentially) many spurious local minima. In this work, we propose an efficient parameter initialization strategy with theoretical guarantees. We prove that if the initial domain of each parameter is reduced inversely proportional to the square root of circuit depth, then the magnitude of the cost gradient decays at most polynomially as a function of the depth. Our theoretical results are verified by numerical simulations of variational quantum eigensolver tasks. Moreover, we demonstrate that the reduced-domain initialization strategy can protect specific quantum neural networks from exponentially many spurious local minima. Non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) is a unique phenomenon studied intensively in non-Hermitian systems during the past few years. In this work, we discuss the energy dependence of NHSE by introducing nonreciprocity beyond the nearest-neighboring hopping in the one-dimensional lattices. The direction of NHSE reverses as the eigenenergy of the system under open boundary conditions (OBCs) sweeps across some critical energies. To characterize such a phenomenon, we introduce the concept of non-Hermitian skin effect edges, which separate the eigenstates localized at opposite ends of the lattice in the OBC spectrum. We find the skin effect edges are determined by the self-intersections in the spectrum under periodic boundary conditions (PBCs), which are topological as the winding number of the PBC spectrum changes sign when crossing them. Moreover, the NHSE edges will disappear when the self-intersections merge into a single point by tuning the system parameters. We study the one-dimensional nonreciprocal lattices with real nearest neighboring hopping and find that the energy spectra under open boundary conditions can be entirely real or imaginary. We further investigate the spectral properties and the non-Hermitian skin effect in the one-dimensional mosaic lattices with real nonreciprocal hopping introduced at equally spaced sites. The eigenenergies of such lattices undergo a real-complex-imaginary or real-complex transition as the nonreciprocity varies. Moreover, the skin effect exhibits phase transitions depending on the period of the mosaic nonreciprocity. The bulk states are abruptly shifted from one end of the lattice to the opposite one by crossing the critical points, accompanied by the closing and reopening of point gaps in the spectra under periodic boundary conditions. The phase diagrams of the transition are presented and the critical boundaries are analytically determined. We investigate the spectral topology of one-dimensional lattices where the nonreciprocal hoppings within the nearest $r_d$ neighboring sites are the same. For the purely off-diagonal model without onsite potentials, the energy spectrum of the lattice under periodic boundary conditions (PBCs) forms an inseparable loop that intertwines with itself in the complex energy plane and is characterized by winding numbers ranging from 1 up to $r_d$. The corresponding spectrum under open boundary conditions (OBCs), which is real in the nearest neighboring model, will ramify and take the shape of an $(r_d+1)$-pointed star with all the branches connected at zero energy. If we further introduce periodic onsite modulations, the spectrum will gradually divide into multiple separable bands as we vary the parameters. Most importantly, we find that a different kind of band gap called loop gap can exist in the PBC spectrum, separating an inner loop from an outer one with each composed by part of the spectrum. In addition, loop structures also exist in the OBC spectra of systems with onsite potentials. We further study the lattices with power-law decaying long-range nonreciprocal hopping and found that the intertwined loops in the PBC spectrum will be untangled. Finally, we propose an experimental scheme to realize the long-range nonreciprocal models by exploiting electrical circuits. We introduce the one-dimensional quasireciprocal lattices where the forward hopping amplitudes between nearest neighboring sites $\{ t+t_{jR} \}$ are chosen to be a random permutation of the backward hopping $\{ t+t_{jL} \}$ or vice versa. The values of $\{ t_{jL} \}$ (or $\{t_{jR} \}$) can be periodic, quasiperiodic, or randomly distributed. We show that the Hamiltonian matrices are pseudo-Hermitian and the energy spectra are real as long as $\{ t_{jL} \}$ (or $\{t_{jR} \}$) are smaller than the threshold value. While the non-Hermitian skin effect is always absent in the eigenstates due to the global cancellation of local nonreciprocity, the competition between the nonreciprocity and the accompanying disorders in hopping amplitudes gives rise to energy-dependent localization transitions. Moreover, in the quasireciprocal Su-Schrieffer-Heeger models with staggered hopping $t_{jL}$ (or $t_{jR}$), topologically nontrivial phases are found in the real-spectra regimes characterized by nonzero winding numbers. Finally, we propose an experimental scheme to realize the quasireciprocal models in electrical circuits. This paper provides a stabilizing preparation method for quantum Gaussian states by utilizing continuous measurement. The stochastic evolution of the open quantum system is described in terms of the quantum stochastic master equation. We present necessary and sufficient conditions for the system to have a unique stabilizing steady Gaussian state. The conditions are much weaker than those existing results presented in the approach of preparing Gaussian states through environment engineering. Parametric conditions of how to prepare an arbitrary pure Gaussian state are provided. This approach provides more degrees of freedom to choose the system Hamiltonian and the system-environment coupling operators, as compared with the case where dissipation-induced approach is employed. The stabilizing conditions for the case of imperfect measurement efficiency are also presented. Distinct non-Hermitian dynamics has demonstrated its advantages in improving measurement precision over traditional sensing protocols. Multi-mode non-Hermitian lattice dynamics can provide exponentially-enhanced quantum sensing where the quantum Fisher information (QFI) per photon increases exponentially with the lattice size. However, somewhat surprisingly, it was also shown that the quintessential non-Hermitian skin effect does not provide any true advantage. In this paper, we demonstrate the importance of optimizing the phase of the coherent drive, and the position of the injection and detection in multi-mode non-Hermitian quantum sensing. The QFI per photon can be exponentially-enhanced or exponentially-reduced depending on parameters of the drive and detection. Specifically, it is demonstrated that for large amplification by choosing appropriate coherent drive parameters, the non-Hermitian skin effect can provide exponentially-enhanced quantum sensing. Moreover, in the regime beyond linear response, skin-effect can also provide a dramatic advantage as compared to the local perturbation, and the proposed protocol is robust in tuning the amplification factor., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

We introduce a one-dimensional lattice model whose hopping amplitudes are modulated for equally spaced sites. Such mosaic lattice exhibits many interesting topological and localization phenomena that do not exist in the regular off-diagonal lattices. When the mosaic modulation is commensurate with the underlying lattice, topologically nontrivial phases with zero- and nonzero-energy edge modes are observed as we tune the modulation, where the nontrivial regimes are characterized by quantized Berry phases. If the mosaic lattice becomes incommensurate, Anderson localization will be induced purely by the quasiperiodic off-diagonal modulations. The localized eigenstate is found to be centered on two neighboring sites connected by the quasiperiodic hopping terms. Furthermore, both the commensurate and incommensurate off-diagonal mosaic lattices can host Chern insulators in their two-dimensional generalizations. Non-Hermitian dynamics has been widely studied to enhance the precision of quantum sensing; and non-reciprocity can be a powerful resource for non-Hermitian quantum sensing, as non-reciprocity allows to arbitrarily exceed the fundamental bound on the measurement rate of any reciprocal sensors. Here we establish fundamental limits on signal-to-noise ratio for reciprocal and non-reciprocal non-Hermitian quantum sensing. In particular, for two-mode linear systems with two coherent drives, an approximately attainable uniform bound on the best possible measurement rate per photon is derived for both reciprocal and non-reciprocal sensors. This bound is only related to the coupling coefficients and, in principle, can be made arbitrarily large. Our results thus demonstrate that a conventional reciprocal sensor with two drives can simulate any non-reciprocal sensor.
