Abstract Background kangaroo care (KC), endorsed by the World Health Organization, is an evidence-based intervention that plays a pivotal role in mitigating preterm infant mortality and morbidity. However, this intervention has not been fully integrated into healthcare systems in China. This study aimed to gain insight into parents’ perceptions and experiences of KC for preterm infants to contribute to the KC implementation on a larger scale. Methods This study employed a descriptive qualitative design, using face-to-face, semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Fifteen parents participating in KC for preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) were purposively sampled from four hospitals across four cities in Zhejiang Province, China. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the data. Results Four themes and twelve subthemes regarding the parents’ perceptions and experiences about KC were identified. The four themes included: (1) Low motivation upon initial engagement with KC, (2) Dynamic fluctuations of emotional states during KC, (3) Unexpected gains, and (4) Barriers to participation. Conclusions Parents’ perceptions and experiences of KC was a staged process, with parents exhibiting distinct cognitive patterns and unique experiences at each stage. Overall, as KC progresses, parents’ experiences tended to become increasingly positive, despite potential obstacles encountered along the way. To enhance the implementation of KC, healthcare providers could utilize prenatal and postnatal education programs. These programs aim to enhance the understanding of KC among parents of preterm infants, fostering sustained engagement in KC practices.

Abstract Advancements in optical communications have increasingly focused on leveraging spatial-structured beams such as orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams for high-capacity data transmission. Conventional electronic convolutional neural networks exhibit constraints in efficiently demultiplexing OAM signals. Here, we introduce a hybrid optical-electronic convolutional neural network that is capable of completing Fourier optics convolution and realizing intensity-recognition-based demultiplexing of multiplexed OAM beams under variable simulated atmospheric turbulent conditions. The core part of our demultiplexing system includes a 4F optics system employing a Fourier optics convolution layer. This optical spatial-filtering-based convolutional neural network is utilized to realize the training and demultiplexing of the 4-bit OAM-coded signals under simulated atmospheric turbulent conditions. The current system shows a demultiplexing accuracy of 72.84% under strong turbulence scenarios with 3.2 times faster training time than all electronic convolutional neural networks.

Abstract Objective Mucinous breast cancer (MBC) is a kind of breast cancer (BC), which is rare in clinic, mainly for women, because of the low incidence rate, so there is no unified standard treatment protocol. Elderly patients have a poor prognosis due to their combined comorbidities. This study aims to investigate the effect of surgery and chemoradiotherapy on the prognosis of elderly female MBC patients and construct nomograms for predicting the OS and CSS in elderly female MBC patients. Methods Data for female MBC patients over 65 years are obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database, patients were divided into two groups: the training set and the validation set. External validation data of the prediction model were provided by Kunming Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. We used Cox regression modeling, which was used to identify independent risk factors affecting patient prognosis. After avoiding confounding bias according to the multifactorial Cox regression model, we used these screened statistically significant results to construct column‐line plots. The performance of the model was tested using the consistency index (c‐index), the calibration curve, and the area under the operating characteristic curve of the receiver (AUC). Subsequently, we used decision curve analysis (DCA) to examine the potential clinical value of our nomograms. Results A total of 8103 elderly MBC female patients were extracted from the database SEER and were assigned to the training and validation set, randomly. A total of 83 patients from Kunming Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine were used in the external verification set. After multifactorial Cox regression analysis, we found that age, race, T‐stage, M‐stage, surgical approach, radiotherapy, and tumor size were independent risk factors for OS in elderly MBC patients. Similarly, independent risk factors of CSS included age, marital status, N stage, M stage, surgical approach, chemotherapy, and tumor size. The C‐index for the OS training, validation, and external verification set were 0.731 (95%CI 0.715–0.747), 0.738 (95%CI 0.724–0.752), and 0.809 (95%CI 0.731–0.8874). The C‐index of the training set, the validation set, and external verification set for CSS were 0.786 (95%CI 0.747–0.825), 0.776 (95%CI 0.737–0.815), and 0.84 (95%CI0.754–0.926), respectively. The AUC, calibration curves and DCA also showed good accuracy. Conclusions In this study, we construct a new nomogram to predict the prognosis of elderly patients with MBC. The nomograms have undergone internal and external validation and have been confirmed to have good clinical applicability. At the same time, we found that for elderly female MBC patients, surgery and radiotherapy significantly benefit their survival, but chemotherapy is not conducive to patient survival.

BackgroundKangaroo mother care (KMC) is an evidence-based intervention that can effectively reduce morbidity and mortality in preterm infants, but it has yet to be widely implemented in health systems in China. Most qualitative studies on KMC for preterm infants focused on the experiences and influencing factors from the perspective of preterm infant parents, while neglecting the perspective of healthcare providers, who played a critical role in guiding KMC practice. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the perceptions and experiences of healthcare providers regarding their involvement in KMC implementation for preterm infants to promote the contextualized implementation of KMC.MethodsA descriptive qualitative approach was adopted. A purposive sampling was used to select healthcare providers involved in KMC implementation in the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) as participants from four tertiary hospitals across four cities in Zhejiang Province, China. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect information. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the data.ResultsSeventeen healthcare professionals were recruited, including thirteen nurses and four doctors in the NICUs. Four themes and twelve subthemes emerged: different cognitions based on different perspectives (acknowledged effects and benefits, not profitable economically), ambivalent emotions regarding KMC implementation (gaining understanding, gratitude and trust from parents, not used to working under parental presence, and concerning nursing safety issues), barriers to KMC implementation (lack of unified norms and standards, lack of systematic training and communication platform, insufficient human resources, and inadequate parental compliance) and suggestions for KMC implementation (improving equipment and environment, strengthening collaboration between nurses and doctors, and support from hospital managers).ConclusionsDespite acknowledging the clinical benefits of KMC, the lack of economic incentives, concerns about potential risks, and various barriers hindered healthcare providers' intrinsic motivation to implement KMC in NICUs in China. To facilitate the effective implementation of KMC, hospital managers should provide bonuses and training programs for healthcare providers, while giving them recognition and encouragement to enhance their motivation to implement KMC.

Introduction: Paclitaxel (PTX) cannot effectively treat glioma because it cannot cross the bloodbrain barrier (BBB). A specific mode electroacupuncture stimulation (SMES) can temporarily open the BBB, thereby improving drug delivery to the brain. This study aimed to observe SMES-mediated accumulation of PTX in the brain and its anti-glioma effect and explore the role of the Hedgehog pathway. Methods: The acupoint selectivity of SMES in opening the BBB was examined in normal rats. The penetration and anti-glioma activity were determined in a C6-Luc glioma rat model. SMES was performed using 2/100 Hz, 3 mA, 6–6 s, and 40 min The survival curve was analysed by the KaplanMeier method, brain tumour pathology and size was observed by HE staining, and in vivo imaging system respectively. Results: SMES-induced BBB opening had acupoint selectivity. SMES could improve PTX accumulation in brain and SMES-mediated PTX delivery showed enhanced anti-glioma activity due to better brain penetration. Hedgehog pathway was involved in SMES-mediated PTX delivery by regulating Occludin expression. Conclusion: SMES at the head acupoints to deliver PTX is a feasible and effective method for treating glioma. The Hedgehog pathway may play a key role in SMES-mediated PTX delivery across the BBB.

Objective Self-management support services can improve patients’ self-management ability. This study summarized the best evidence on a self-management support scheme for patients with inflammatory bowel disease based on a mobile health system to accurately describe the current status of the field and provide recommendations for healthcare workers. Methods Two researchers retrieved studies from computer decision support systems, guideline websites, official association websites, and databases from the establishment of the database until October 2023. The quality of the included studies was independently evaluated by two authors using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation Instrument II and the 2016 version of the corresponding evaluation standards of the Australian Joanna Briggs Institute Evidence-based Health Care Center. The classification of evidence and recommendation level adopted the 2014 version of the Australian Joanna Briggs Institute evidence pregrading and recommending level system. Results Fifteen studies were included, comprising one guideline, two expert consensuses, four systematic reviews, four quasi-experimental studies, and four qualitative studies. The overall quality of the included studies was moderate to high. Thirty-six pieces of best evidence were compiled for seven elements, namely, mobile health system type and functional support; mobile health system application preparation; health information recording, uploading, and presentation; zoning management of diseases and early warning of the active period; support related to health education; healthcare support team formation and services; and virtual communities. Conclusions Our study evaluated the quality of the included studies and summarized a self-management support scheme for patients with inflammatory bowel disease based on a mobile health system. The main scheme was divided into 7 parts and 36 items, which can be used as a reference for healthcare workers so that they can provide more comprehensive and scientific self-management support services for patients with inflammatory bowel disease through mobile health systems.

A 71-year-old male had disseminated multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Following treatment with cefotaxime and piperacillin-tazobactam, his symptoms have worsened instead. Multiple organ failure caused by Japanese Spotted Fever (JSF) was diagnosed based on metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), we rapidly treated the patient with doxycycline. Thereafter, his symptoms gradually improved. In this report, we emphasized the importance of rapid microbial diagnostic tools and the early use of tetracyclines for the treatment of JSF.

Previous researches reported that burdock (Arctium lappa L.) root had lipid-lowering effects. The potential mechanisms needed to be further clarified. In this study, the effects and mechanisms of polyphenols (ALP) and polysaccharides (ALS) of burdock on hyperlipidemia rats were explored. The results revealed that ALP and ALS significantly inhibited the development of hyperlipidemia and reduced lipid levels in serum and liver. Meanwhile, ALP significantly decreased the activity of intestinal esterase enzyme. ALP and ALS significantly improved the imbalance of the microbiota by increasing the diversity of the intestinal microbiota and the abundance of the microbiota that produced short-chain fatty acids, and thus increased the content of acetic acid in short-chain fatty acids in the feces of hyperlipidemic rats. These results revealed that burdock played a lipid lowering effects by regulating intestinal dysbiosis due to hyperlipidemia, and ALP and ALS were the bioactive components of these effects.

Abstract The damming materials will be deteriorated during the long-term service of concrete arch dam by weathering, seepage dissolution, freeze–thaw and other factors which will put dams at potential risk. However, there are few researches on the reliability assessment of arch dams considering the effect of material deterioration. In this paper, a prediction model of concrete mechanical properties under freeze–thaw cycles is established using regression analysis. Considering various uncertain factors, a time-varying structural reliability analysis model is established using finite element equivalent stress method and an optimized response surface method with improved sampling strategy and convergence criterion. A case study is later carried out. The results show that, at the early stage of freeze–thaw, the structural failure probability will increase steadily in a small range. However, as the tensile strength of concrete continues to decrease under long-time freeze–thaw action, the reliability of the arch dam structure will suddenly fall off a cliff. The proposed deterioration model and reliability analysis probability model are reasonable and practical and could be serve as a technical support for similar engineering projects.

Abstract The breach risk of reservoir dam exists objectively while exerting benefits. There is great uncertainty in the overtopping breach process of embankment dam and the dam break flood routing which affects the accuracy of dam risk analysis and may cause unnecessary waste in emergency scheduling. However, the uncertainty analysis of the breach process and its consequence is currently inadequate. Therefore, a stratified sampling Monte Carlo method is proposed to simulate uncertain overtopping breach flood of embankment dams. The main sources of uncertainty are analyzed and determined as uncertain dam breach and flood routing processes. The uncertain breach process of dam is studied by presenting a sensitive study between 3 mechanism breach models and 5 parametric breach models. The random dam breach process is restored using HEC-RAS semi-empirical breach model by estimating breach characteristics through multiple common breach models. The random flood routing is carried out through 1D–2D coupled unsteady flow analysis in which the random breach process is adopted as an upper inflow boundary condition. According to the case study results, though parameters have been controlled in a limited range, the flood routing results in the early stage of dam overtopping failure present greater uncertainty. As the flood progresses further downstream, the uncertainty will gradually decrease. This study could serve as a reference for dam breach risk map making.

Abstract Prostate Cancer (PC) is the most common male nonskin tumour in the world, and most diagnosed patients are over 65 years old. The main treatment for PC includes surgical treatment and nonsurgical treatment. Currently, for nonsurgically treated elderly patients, few studies have evaluated their prognostic factors. Our aim was to construct a nomogram that could predict cancer-specific survival (CSS) in nonsurgically treated elderly PC patients to assess their prognosis-related independent risk factors. Patient information was obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database, and our target population was nonsurgically treated PC patients who were over 65 years old. Independent risk factors were determined using both univariate and multivariate Cox regression models. A nomogram was built using a multivariate Cox regression model. The accuracy and discrimination of the prediction model were tested using the consistency index (C-index), the area under the subject operating characteristic curve (AUC), and the calibration curve. Decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to examine the potential clinical value of this model. A total of 87,831 elderly PC patients with nonsurgical treatment in 2010–2018 were included in the study and were randomly assigned to the training set (N = 61,595) and the validation set (N = 26,236). Univariate and multivariate Cox regression model analyses showed that age, race, marital status, TNM stage, chemotherapy, radiotherapy modality, PSA and GS were independent risk factors for predicting CSS in nonsurgically treated elderly PC patients. The C-index of the training set and the validation set was 0.894 (95% CI 0.888–0.900) and 0.897 (95% CI 0.887–0.907), respectively, indicating the good discrimination ability of the nomogram. The AUC and the calibration curves also show good accuracy and discriminability. We developed a new nomogram to predict CSS in elderly PC patients with nonsurgical treatment. The model is internally validated with good accuracy and reliability, as well as potential clinical value, and can be used for clinical aid in decision-making.

Abstract Background Laryngopharyngeal cancer (LPC) includes laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancer, whose early diagnosis can significantly improve the prognosis and quality of life of patients. Pathological biopsy of suspicious cancerous tissue under the guidance of laryngoscopy is the gold standard for diagnosing LPC. However, this subjective examination largely depends on the skills and experience of laryngologists, which increases the possibility of missed diagnoses and repeated unnecessary biopsies. We aimed to develop and validate a deep convolutional neural network-based Laryngopharyngeal Artificial Intelligence Diagnostic System (LPAIDS) for real-time automatically identifying LPC in both laryngoscopy white-light imaging (WLI) and narrow-band imaging (NBI) images to improve the diagnostic accuracy of LPC by reducing diagnostic variation among on-expert laryngologists. Methods All 31,543 laryngoscopic images from 2382 patients were categorised into training, verification, and test sets to develop, validate, and internal test LPAIDS. Another 25,063 images from five other hospitals were used as external tests. Overall, 551 videos were used to evaluate the real-time performance of the system, and 200 randomly selected videos were used to compare the diagnostic performance of the LPAIDS with that of laryngologists. Two deep-learning models using either WLI (model W) or NBI (model N) images were constructed to compare with LPAIDS. Results LPAIDS had a higher diagnostic performance than models W and N, with accuracies of 0·956 and 0·949 in the internal image and video tests, respectively. The robustness and stability of LPAIDS were validated in external sets with the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values of 0·965–0·987. In the laryngologist-machine competition, LPAIDS achieved an accuracy of 0·940, which was comparable to expert laryngologists and outperformed other laryngologists with varying qualifications. Conclusions LPAIDS provided high accuracy and stability in detecting LPC in real-time, which showed great potential for using LPAIDS to improve the diagnostic accuracy of LPC by reducing diagnostic variation among on-expert laryngologists.

Abstract Smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) is an asymptomatic precursor to active multiple myeloma (MM). The aim of this study was to report clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with SMM stratified based on their risk of progression to MM using the Mayo 20/2/20 criteria. Data were leveraged from the Czech Myeloma Group Registry of Monoclonal Gammopathies (RMG). Key outcomes included progression-free survival from SMM diagnosis to active MM diagnosis or death (PFS), progression-free survival from SMM diagnosis to progression on first line (1 L) MM treatment or death (PFS2), and overall survival (OS). Of 498 patients, 174 (34.9%) were classified as high risk and 324 (65.1%) as non–high risk. Median follow-up was approximately 65 months. The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) with increased transmissibility and partial resistance to neutralization by antibodies has been observed globally. There is an urgent need for an effective vaccine to combat these variants. Our study demonstrated that the B.1.351 variant inactivated vaccine candidate (B.1.351V) generated strong binding and neutralizing antibody responses in BALB/c mice against the B.1.351 virus and other SARS-CoV-2 variants after two doses within 28 days. Immunized K18-hACE2 mice also exhibited elevated levels of live virus-neutralizing antibodies against various SARS-CoV-2 viruses. Following infection with these viruses, K18-hACE2 mice displayed a stable body weight, a high survival rate, minimal virus copies in lung tissue, and no lung damage compared to the control group. These findings indicate that B.1.351V offered protection against infection with multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants in mice, providing insights for the development of a vaccine targeting SARS-CoV-2 VOCs for human use.

The effects of maize/peanut intercropping on crop yields, peanut nodulation, biological nitrogen (N) fixation in peanuts, crop N uptake, and N use efficiency under different N application rates were studied. A long-term maize/peanut intercropping micro-plot experiment was started in 2015. The experiment included the following three planting patterns: maize sole crop (SM), peanut sole crop (SP), and maize and peanut intercropping (intercropping maize: IM; intercropping peanut: IP). Additionally, three N application rates were tested as follows: 0 kg·ha−1 (N0), 150 kg·ha−1 (N150), and 300 kg·ha−1 (N300). The results indicated that N fertilization significantly increased maize yield. Intercropping increased maize yield while decreasing peanut yield across different N application rates. Both N fertilization and intercropping significantly increased the maize harvest index (HI), whereas intercropping decreased the peanut HI under N300. The number and fresh weight of peanut nodules decreased with the increasing N application rate with reductions ranging from 31.15% to 45.23% and 39.60% to 46.67%, respectively. Intercropping increased the number of peanut nodules by an average of 62.56% under the N0 treatment. Intercropping significantly improved the N absorption capacity of the whole intercropping system, and the contribution of maize was higher than that of peanuts. Maize demonstrated a stronger competitive ability for N uptake compared with peanuts in the intercropping system. Intercropping significantly increased the N use efficiency for both maize and peanuts. However, the N use efficiency of maize increased with N application rates, while that of peanut decreased. Compared with sole crops, intercropping increased the partial factor productivity of maize by 55.2% but decreased that of peanuts by 56.3%. In conclusion, at an N application rate of 150 kg·ha−1, maize/peanut intercropping increased overall crop yield and improved the N absorption and use capacity of maize

The separation of cenospheres is an important method for fly ash recycling, and there is no efficient and less polluting method available for separating cenospheres. This paper proposes the dry separation of cenospheres using a cyclone separator, which utilizes the small density of cenospheres as a feature to separate them. The corresponding numerical simulations of the cyclone separator model used to separate the cenospheres were carried out by a CFD analysis, after which the size of the radius of the upper discharge opening and the height of the sloping wall of the cyclone separator were analyzed by simulation; the effect of the incident velocity on the Newton’s efficiency of the separation of the cenospheres was also analyzed. The simulation results indicate that the Newton’s efficiency can reach 0.55 when the radius of the upper feed port is 90 mm, the height of the inclined wall is 400 mm, and the incident speed is 2.5 m/s.

Background: Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is the ultimate common malignant head and neck cancer with dismal prognosis. The expression pattern and clinical significance of Siglec-15 (Sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin 15) in LSCC are poorly understood. In order to lay the groundwork for future immune-related research on Siglec-15 in LSCC, we set out to study its expression and prognostic importance in the disease, as well as to use bioinformatics to investigate the immune features modulated by Siglec-15 in LSCC. Methods: ① In order to get the gene expression profile and clinical data for TCGA head and neck cancer (TCGA-HNSC), you may access the relevant data from UCSC xena and use 110 cases of laryngeal cancer as a training set. Two datasets, GSE27020 and GSE25727, were obtained from the GEO databank and utilized as validation sets. These datasets include expression profiles and clinical information. The Siglec-15 gene and immune characteristics were analyzed by bioinformatics methods. ② Retrospectively collected routine paraffin specimens from patients with pathological diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma from December 2012 to November 2015 in Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital and fresh frozen tissue of patients from June 2021 to March 2022. Immunohistochemistry method, immunofluorescence technique and real-time quantitative PCR was used to examine the difference of Siglec-15 appearance in LSCC tissue and adjacent tissue, and its correlation of prognosis, clinic pathological characteristics and CD8+T lymphocyte infiltration. Using human laryngeal cancer cell line (LCC), we studied the influence of Siglec-15 in cell proliferation and invasion. Results: We identified Siglec-15 was upregulated in LSCC. The patients in Siglec-15 high expression group had a poor overall survival (OS) based on the clinical information from TGCA and 111 LSCC patients that hospitalized in Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital. The COX regression analysis indicated Siglec-15 as an independent predictor for poor prognosis of LSCC. Bioinformatic analysis suggested that the high expression of Siglec-15 shape an immune suppressive tumor microenvironment (TEM), leading to poor response to immunotherapy in LSCC. Siglec-15 enhanced cell invasion and proliferation, as we showed in vitro. Conclusion: Our study support Siglec-15 as a potential predictor for LSCC prognosis and an attractive target for LSCC immunotherapy.

Cerebral ischemic stroke (CIS) is a kind of acute cerebrovascular disease with fast onset, low-cure rate, and high case-fatality rate. The application of Aconitum coreanum on CIS was recorded in many ancient books in China with it mechanism and effective components unclear. This study aimed to analyze the potential mechanism and effetvie components of A. coreanum on treating CIS. Neurological function score, cerebral infarction rate, and inflammatory indicators were applied to evaluate the efficacy of A. coreanum on gerbils with CIS. The prototype compounds in A. coreanum which were absorbed into blood was analyzed and identified by Ultra high performance liquid chromatography-Q exactive focus-Mass spectrometer (UPLC-QE-MS). And bioinformatics analysis was used to predict their potential targets or pathways of action. Western blotting and immunofluorescence were adopted to validate the targets or pathway with high relation. After treatment with A. coreanum, the neurological function status of gerbils with CIS was significantly improved, the ischemic area of the brain and the levels of inflammatory indicators significantly reduced. 22 prototype compounds in A. coreanum absorbed into blood were identified mainly including C-20 and C-19 diterpenoid alkaloids. Gene ontology (GO) function enrichment analysis illustrated that A. coreanum acted on protein phosphorylation, receptor complexes, protein kinase activity, and inflammatory response to impove CIS. The kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis results revealed that PI3K/Akt signaling pathway was a key pathway. Western blotting and immunofluorescence validated that A. coreanum acted on PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. In conclusion, A. coreanum improved the inflammantory condition in CIS by acting on PI3K/Akt signaling pathway and the effective components were the diterpenoid alkaloids in it.

Maize/peanut intercropping is practiced widely to increase land productivity and considered a sustainable way for using and saving resources through peanut’s complementary N source via biological N2 fixation. Our study aims to understand how maize/peanut intercropping affects the nodulation of peanuts under water-limiting conditions and different nitrogen inputs. A two-year micro-plot experiment in 2015–2016 and a two-year field experiment in 2017–2018 were conducted to quantify nodulation in maize/peanut intercropping and sole peanut cropping under four N fertilization rates (N-free, low, medium, and high N) in rain-fed water-limited conditions. In the micro-plot experiment, intercropped peanuts increased nodule biomass compared to sole peanuts. The nodule number of intercropped peanuts was 51.6% (p = 0.001) higher than that of sole cropped peanuts, while nodule weights did not differ at high N fertilization rates and were lower in the no-N fertilization control. However, the results were different in the field experiment. Both the nodule number and single weight of the sole cropped peanut were 48.7% (p = 0.020) and 58.9% (p = 0.014) higher than that of the intercropped peanut. The ratio of the nodule weight to aboveground dry matter at the beginning peg in the dry year of 2017 was lower in intercropping than sole cropping, especially at low N fertilization rates. The potential increase in nodulation found in a well-controlled micro-plot environment might be limited by strong water and light competitions in field conditions. The results could contribute to the understanding of interspecific interactions in cereal/legume intercropping.

Maize/peanut intercropping may improve soil health through reducing nitrogen (N) fertilization. However, the effects of maize/peanut intercropping combined with reduced N fertilization on the soil fungal community structure have not been well reported. Using a long-term localized micro-zone experiment, we investigated the combined effects of intercropping and N fertilizer application on soil fungal community diversity and composition. Three cropping patterns (maize/peanut intercropping, maize monoculture, and peanut monoculture) and three N application levels (0 kg·hm−2, 150 kg·hm−2, and 300 kg·hm−2) were assessed. The results showed that the total numbers of fungal species and unique species (operational taxonomic units, OTUs) in both maize and peanut soils tended to first increase and then decrease with increasing N application. Compared with monoculture, the numbers of total OTUs and unique OTUs in intercropped maize soil decreased by 4.14% and 12.79%, respectively, but the total numbers of OTUs and unique OTUs in peanut soil increased by 1.08% and 3.78%, respectively. With increasing N application, the soil fungal Ace and Chao indices of maize soil first increased and then decreased, while the fungal Shannon, Ace, and Chao indices of peanut soil decreased. Compared with the monoculture system, intercropping significantly reduced the maize soil fungal Ace and Chao indices but increased the peanut soil fungal Shannon, Ace, and Chao indices. Nitrogen application and intercropping significantly altered the fungal community structure of maize soil, while N application had no significant effect on the fungal community structure of peanut soil, though intercropping significantly changed the fungal community structure of peanut soil. At the phylum level, Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Mortierellomycota, unclassified_k_Fungi, and Chytridiomycota were the dominant taxa. Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that soil nitrate (NO3−) content was the main environmental factor shaping the soil fungal community. In conclusion, excessive N fertilization (300 kg·hm−2) can reduce soil fungal community diversity; maize/peanut intercropping reversed the negative effect of N application on fungal community of peanut soil, but not that of maize soil. Soil NO3− content is the primary environmental driver of soil fungal communities.

Abstract The purpose of this study: (1) propose an evaluation indicator of the fattening efficiency of commercial pigs (Yorkshire × Landrace × Duroc)—fattening efficiency index (FEI). (2) Analyze the correlation to find the main productive factors affecting the FEI. (3) Compare and analyze the yearly/monthly/different piglets’ sources of productive performance in 2020 and 2021. The data included 2592 commercial pig batches in 2020 and 3266 in 2021, with a total of 6,134,234 commercial pigs. Descriptive statistics and difference analysis were carried out on 16 productive factors of a whole year and single/multiple sources for two consecutive years. The same period difference between the monthly data and the annual average were also analyzed. The top six productive factors correlated with FEI were average daily gain (ADG) (0.8080), feed conversion rate (FCR) (− 0.7203), survival rate (SR) (0.6968), number of deaths (− 0.4103), feeding days (− 0.3748) and body weight (BW) of marketing pigs (0.3369). The overall productive performance in 2021 was lower than that in 2020, which was reflected in more piglet sources and a lower BW of piglets, more deaths, a lower SR, longer feeding days, a lower ADG, a higher FCR and a lower FEI. The productive performance of a single source was better than that of multiple ones. The contrastive results of monthly data in 2020 and 2021 showed significant differences in most factors except for the number of marketing pigs, the number of piglets and feed consumption. The monthly trend of 15 factors for two consecutive years revealed similar trends only in the month of piglets purchasing, number of piglets sources, number of deaths and ADG. Compared with the annual average, the ADG significantly increased in May. The FEI of multiple sources was markedly lower than that of a single source. FEI may be suitable for evaluating the fattening efficiency of commercial pigs. The annual and monthly productive performance and fattening efficiency in 2021 were significantly lower than those in 2020. Single source was represented better productive performance and fattening efficiency than multiple ones.

PurposeDiabetes can cause hippocampal damage and lead to cognitive impairment. Diabetic cognitive impairment (DCI) is a chronic complication of diabetes associated with a high disability rate; however, its pathogenesis and therapeutic targets are unclear. We aimed to explore the mechanism of hippocampal damage during diabetes and evaluate the potential role of D-pinitol (DP) in protecting hippocampal tissue and improving cognitive dysfunction.MethodsDP (150 mg/kg/day) was administered intragastrically to streptozocin-induced aging-accelerated mice for 8 weeks. Hippocampal tissues were examined using tandem mass tag (TMT)-based proteomics and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC–MS)/MS-based non-targeted metabolomic analysis. Differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) and differentially regulated metabolites (DRMs) were screened for further analysis, and some DEPs were verified using western blotting.ResultsOur results showed that 329 proteins had significantly altered hippocampal expression in untreated diabetic mice (DM), which was restored to normal after DP treatment in 72 cases. In total, 207 DRMs were identified in the DM group, and the expression of 32 DRMs was restored to normal post-DP treatment. These proteins and metabolites are involved in metabolic pathways (purine metabolism, arginine and proline metabolism, and histidine metabolism), actin cytoskeleton regulation, oxidative phosphorylation, and Rap1-mediated signaling.ConclusionsOur study may help to better understand the mechanism of diabetic hippocampal damage and cognitive impairment and suggest a potential therapeutic target.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The cardiopulmonary function of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is significantly lower than that of patients with simple snoring and is significantly related to the severity of OSA. Currently, only a few studies have been conducted on cardiopulmonary exercise testing in overweight patients with OSA. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the correlation between cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) indices and the condition of overweight patients with OSA. DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective study in Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine. METHODS: This study included 73 hospitalized overweight patients. The patients were divided into no, mild, moderate, and severe OSA groups. Differences in the CPET indices among the four groups were compared. The correlation between the CPET indices and conditions was analyzed. RESULTS: No, mild, moderate, and severe OSA groups had 18 men and 5 women, 11 men and 3 women, 12 men and 2 women, and 21 men and 1 woman, respectively (P > 0.05). No significant difference was observed in resting pulmonary function among the four groups (P > 0.05). In the CPET, the anaerobic threshold, maximum oxygen uptake, and oxygen pulse were significantly lower in the severe OSA group than those in the normal OSA group (P < 0.05). Moreover, CPET indices negatively correlated with the apnea-hypopnea index. CONCLUSION: Changes in CPET indices occurred earlier than changes in resting pulmonary function in patients with OSA. CPET might be a potential method for evaluating the severity of OSA combined with overweight status.

Abstract Aim To review and analyse the evidence on the efficacy and safety of non‐pharmacological interventions for preterm infants to relieve endotracheal suctioning (ES) pain. Design A systematic review per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses guidelines. Methods Six databases were searched with a retrieval strategy. Parallel and crossover randomized controlled trials reporting non‐pharmacological interventions for relieving ES pain in preterm infants were identified from inception to 1 September 2021. The protocol was published in PROSPERO (CRD42021276058). Results Ten studies were retrieved, including nine different non‐pharmacological interventions. Seven studies reported that non‐pharmacological interventions in relieving pain were more effective than conventional care during ES, and three trials reported its safety. Due to the heterogeneity of pain assessment tools, time of assessment and population, only Facilitated tucking had sufficient evidence that it is a safe and effective non‐pharmacological intervention.

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a type of swarm intelligence algorithm that is frequently used to resolve specific global optimization problems due to its rapid convergence and ease of operation. However, PSO still has certain deficiencies, such as a poor trade-off between exploration and exploitation and premature convergence. Hence, this paper proposes a dual-stage hybrid learning particle swarm optimization (DHLPSO). In the algorithm, the iterative process is partitioned into two stages. The learning strategy used at each stage emphasizes exploration and exploitation, respectively. In the first stage, to increase population variety, a Manhattan distance based learning strategy is proposed. In this strategy, each particle chooses the furthest Manhattan distance particle and a better particle for learning. In the second stage, an excellent example learning strategy is adopted to perform local optimization operations on the population, in which each particle learns from the global optimal particle and a better particle. Utilizing the Gaussian mutation strategy, the algorithm’s searchability in particular multimodal functions is significantly enhanced. On benchmark functions from CEC 2013, DHLPSO is evaluated alongside other PSO variants already in existence. The comparison results clearly demonstrate that, compared to other cutting-edge PSO variations, DHLPSO implements highly competitive performance in handling global optimization problems.

Abstract Background Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic disease with the potential for significant morbidity in case of suboptimal treatment (e.g. low treatment adherence). In spite of immense research in IBD, literature on association of IBD with race/ethnicity is fragmented. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the association between race/ethnicity and treatment adherence and persistence among patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC) initiated with biologic therapies. Methods This observational, retrospective study utilized the Optum Clinformatics (Optum) Extended Data Mart Socioeconomic Status (SES) database. Adult patients with ≥ 2 medical claims for CD or UC diagnosis, ≥ 1 medical or pharmacy claim for corresponding FDA-approved biologic therapy, and a ≥ 12-month pre-index (index date: date of the first biologic medical/pharmacy claim) continuous health plan enrollment were included. Treatment adherence was measured as the proportion of days covered of ≥ 80% and treatment persistence by the number of days from the index date to the biologics discontinuation date. Switching among biologics was allowed for both treatment adherence and treatment persistence. Multivariable regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between race/ethnicity and treatment adherence/persistence. Results Among patients with CD (N = 1430) and UC (N = 1059) included, majority were White (CD: 80.3%, UC: 78.3%), followed by African Americans (AA; CD: 10.5%, UC: 9.7%). Among patients with CD, AA were significantly less likely to adhere to biologics (adjusted OR [95%CI]: 0.61 [0.38; 0.99]) and more likely to discontinue biologics earlier (adjusted HR [95%CI]: 1.52 [1.16; 2.0]) during the follow-up period compared to Whites, after adjusting for other patient sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Among patients with UC, no significant differences in the treatment adherence/persistence were observed between different races/ethnicities. Conclusions Patients with CD were found to display racial differences in the treatment adherence and persistence of biologics, with significantly lower adherence and earlier discontinuation in AA compared to Whites. Such differences were not observed in patients with UC. Future studies are warranted to understand the possible reasons for racial differences, particularly in patients with CD.

Hydrogen (H2) energy is presumed to be the most promising alternative to replacing traditional fossil fuels to achieve the global mission of carbon neutrality. Electrocatalytic water splitting driven by green electricity has been regarded as an ideal method for large‐scale green hydrogen production with a minimal CO2 footprint. However, most of the reported electrocatalysts still suffer from large overpotentials and severe activity degradation at high current density (>1000 mA cm−2). Therefore, a comprehensive review to summarize the representative alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts with large current densities is essential to guide the fabrication of promising industrial electrocatalysts. In this review, starting from the fundamental of water electrolysis, the design principles to acquire alkaline electrocatalysts with large current density and high stability are elaborated. The critical factors for achieving high‐performance electrocatalysts to meet industrial H2 production are proposed. Additionally, the key processes for preparing self‐supported electrodes are clarified. Afterward, the recently advanced self‐supported transition metal‐based electrocatalysts with high current density for alkaline HER are systematically summarized. Finally, personal perspective on future opportunities and challenges is highlighted. It is hoped this review can guide the rational design of self‐supported high‐current density electrocatalysts for future commercial H2 production.

AbstractObjective The study aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of ultrasound-guided microwave ablation (MWA) and percutaneous sclerotherapy (PS) for the treatment of large hepatic hemangioma (LHH).Methods This retrospective study included 96 patients who underwent MWA (n = 54) and PS (n = 42) as first-line treatment for LHH in three tertiary hospitals from January 2016 to December 2021. Primary outcomes were technique efficacy rate (volume reduction rate [VRR] > 50% at 12 months), symptom relief rate at 12 months and local tumor progression (LTP). Secondary outcomes included procedure time, major complications, treatment sessions, cost and one-, two-, three-year VRR.Results During a median follow-up of 36 months, the MWA group showed a higher technique efficacy rate (100% vs. 90.4%, p = .018) and symptom relief rate (100% vs. 80%, p = .123) than the PS group. The MWA group had fewer treatment sessions, higher one-, two- and three-year VRR, lower LTP rate (all p 8.1 cm were independent risk factors for LTP (all p 0.115 mg/cm3 had a lower risk of LTP (p = .006).Conclusions Both MWA and PS treatments for large hepatic hemangioma are safe and effective, with MWA being superior in terms of efficacy.

Abstract Background Given malignant ascites with a terrible prognosis and a unique immune microenvironment, our purpose is to evaluate whether oncolytic herpes simplex virus type 2(OH2) is able to safely eliminate ascites of colon cancer and through which specific mechanism it exerts antitumor immunity. Methods We established an ascites mice model through intraperitoneal injection of CT26 cells and obtained an appropriate dose range for in vivo tests. Efficacy and safety of OH2 were detected by weight of ascites, blood routine analysis, histopathological examination, and the survival time of mice. The specific mechanism underlying antitumor immunity was analyzed by cytometric bead array, flow cytometry, and single‐cell RNA sequencing. Furthermore, anti‐interleukin (IL)‐6R antibody tocilizumab was synchronously or sequentially delivered with OH2 to explore the role of the regional cytokine storm, mainly IL‐6 hypersecretion. Results OH2 was able to eliminate ascites and significantly prolong the survival of mice‐bearing CT26 tumor cells by intraperitoneal injection, without obvious systemic damage to the main organs even though a regional cytokine storm. Hypersecretion of pro‐inflammatory cytokines, mainly IL‐6, and increased infiltration of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells were observed in ascites mice treated by OH2, compared with those treated by 5‐fluorouracil or nonresponders. Furthermore, the initial‐stage blocking of the IL‐6 pathway was able to considerably suppress antitumor immune responses driven by OH2. Surprisingly, we discovered upregulations of the immune checkpoint genes such as Cd274 and Pdcd1 by single‐cell RNA sequencing. Conclusions OH2 could safely eliminate malignant ascites of colon cancer and convert the cold immune microenvironment by inducing a remarkably regional cytokine storm in ascites, mainly IL‐6, in the early stage of antitumor immune responses beyond directed oncolytic virotherapy.

Abstract Background Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is an evidence-based intervention that reduces morbidity and mortality in preterm infants. However, it has not yet been fully integrated into health systems around the world. The aim of this study is to provide a cogent summary of the evidence base of the key barriers and facilitators to implementing KMC. Methods An umbrella review of existing reviews on KMC was adopted to identify systematic and scoping reviews that analysed data from primary studies. Electronic English databases, including PubMed, Embase, CINAHL and Cochrane Library, and three Chinese databases were searched from inception to 1 July 2022. Studies were included if they performed a review of barriers and facilitators to KMC. Quality assessment of the retrieved reviews was performed by at least two reviewers independently using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal checklist and risk of bias was assessed with the Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Systematic Reviews (ROBIS) tool. This umbrella review protocol was documented in the PROSPERO registry (CRD42022327994). Results We generated 531 studies, and after the removal of duplicates and ineligible studies, six eligible reviews were included in the analysis. The five themes identified were environmental factors, professional factors, parent/family factors, access factors, and cultural factors, and the factors under each theme were divided into barriers or facilitators depending on the specific features of a given scenario. Conclusions Support from facility management and leadership and well-trained medical staff are of great significance to the successful integration of KMC into daily medical practice, while the parents of preterm infants and other family members should be educated and encouraged in KMC practice. Further research is needed to propose strategies and develop models for implementing KMC.

Abstract PPARγ agonists have been proven to be neuroprotective in vitro and in vivo models of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). In the present study, we identified ligustrazine piperazine derivative (LPD) as a novel PPARγ agonist, which was detected by a dual-luciferase reporter assay system. LPD treatment dose-dependently reduced Aβ40 and Aβ42 levels in PC12 cells stably transfected with APP695swe and PSEN1dE9. Intragastric administration of LPD for 3 months dose-dependently reversed cognitive deficits in APP/PS1 mice. LPD treatment substantially decreased hippocampal Aβ plaques in APP/PS1 mice and decreased the levels of Aβ40 and Aβ42 in vivo and in vitro. Moreover, LPD treatment induced mitophagy in vivo and in vitro and increased brain 18F-FDG uptake in APP/PS1 mice. LPD treatment significantly increased OCR, ATP production, maximal respiration, spare respiratory capacity, and basal respiration in APP/PS1 cells. Mechanistically, LPD treatment upregulated PPARγ, PINK1, and the phosphorylation of Parkin (Ser65) and increased the LC3-II/LC3-I ratio but decreased SQSTM1/p62 in vivo and in vitro. Importantly, all these protective effects mediated by LPD were abolished by cotreatment with the selective PPARγ antagonist GW9662. In summary, LPD could increase brain glucose metabolism and ameliorate cognitive deficits through PPARγ-dependent enhancement of mitophagy in APP/PS1 mice.

Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which is highly contagious and has resulted in a protracted pandemic. Infections caused by new coronavirus strains, primarily Delta and Omicron and currently highly prevalent globally. In response to the epidemic, countries, and cities implemented isolation and quarantine guidance, such as limiting social contact, which have affected the lifestyles and quality of life of the population. Parental feeding behaviors may vary as a result of factors such as prolonged home isolation of parents and children, lack of supplies during isolation, and stress. This study was designed to assess the available evidence and its implications for parental feeding practices in the context of COVID-19. We screened and reviewed research published in five electronic databases between 2020 and 2022, and eight studies met the selection criteria. Parents were observed to use a variety of feeding practices, including high levels of coercive control and reduction of rules and limits according to Vaughn’s food parenting constructs. The findings suggest that parental feeding practices are changing as a result of the pandemic and that more research is needed to further explore how to provide supportive feeding guidance to parents during emergencies in order to jointly promote child health.

BackgroundIn April 2009, the Chinese government launched Zero Markup Drug Policy (ZMDP) to adjust medical institutions' revenue and expenditure structures.ObjectiveThis study evaluated the impact of implementing ZMDP (as an intervention) on the drug costs for managing Parkinson's disease (PD) and its complications from the healthcare providers' perspective.MethodsThe drug costs for managing PD and its complications per outpatient visit or inpatient stay were estimated using electronic health data from a tertiary hospital in China from January 2016 to August 2018. An interrupted time series analysis was conducted to evaluate the immediate change following the intervention (step change, β1) and the change in slope, comparing post-intervention with the pre-intervention period (trend change, β2). Subgroup analyses were conducted in outpatients within the strata of age, patients with or without health insurance, and whether drugs were listed in the national Essential Medicine List (EML).ResultsOverall, 18,158 outpatient visits and 366 inpatient stays were included. Outpatient (β1 = −201.7, 95%CI: −285.4, −117.9) and inpatient (β1 = −372.1, 95% CI: −643.6, −100.6) drug costs for managing PD significantly decreased when implementing ZMDP. However, for outpatients without health insurance, the trend change in drug costs for managing PD (β2 = 16.8, 95% CI: 8.0, 25.6) or PD complications (β2 = 12.6, 95% CI: 5.5, 19.7) significantly increased. Trend changes in outpatient drug costs for managing PD differed when stratifying drugs listed in EML (β2 = −1.4, 95% CI: −2.6, −0.2) or not (β2 = 6.3, 95%CI: 2.0, 10.7). Trend changes of outpatient drug costs for managing PD complications significantly increased in drugs listed in EML (β2 = 14.7, 95% CI 9.2, 20.3), patients without health insurance (β2 = 12.6, 95% CI 5.5, 19.7), and age under 65 (β2 = 24.3, 95% CI 17.3, 31.4).ConclusionsDrug costs for managing PD and its complications significantly decreased when implementing ZMDP. However, the trend in drug costs increased significantly in several subgroups, which may offset the decrease at the implementation.

Atrazine (ATR) is one of the herbicides widely used worldwide. Meanwhile, it is an environmental endocrine disruptor that can cross the blood-brain barrier and cause damage to the endocrine-nervous system, especially by affecting the normal secretion of dopamine (DA). Regrettably, effector markers and cascade response mechanisms in damaged dopaminergic neurons induced by ATR exposure remain elusive. In this paper, we focus on investigating aggregation and position change of transactive response DNA-binding protein-43 (TDP-43) after ATR exposure, and illustrating whether TDP-43 can serve as a potential marker of mitochondrial dysfunction which causes damage to dopaminergic neurons. In our study, we used rat adrenal pheochromocytoma cell line 12 (PC12) to establish an in vitro model of dopaminergic neurons. After PC12 was intervened by ATR, we found reduced DA cycling and DA levels, and that TDP-43 aggregated continuously in the cytoplasm and then translocated to mitochondria. Furthermore, the studies we have performed showed that the translocation can cause mitochondrial dysfunction through activating the unfolded mitochondrial protein response (UPRmt), ultimately causing damage to dopaminergic neuron. The research we have done suggests that TDP-43 can serve as a potential effector marker of dopaminergic neuron damaged caused by ATR exposure.

ObjectiveThe present study aimed to investigate the lipid-lowering effects and mechanisms of fenugreek gum (FG), hawthorn pectin (HP), and burdock inulin (BI) on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced hyperlipidemic rats.MethodsIn this study, high-fat diet (HFD) together with fat emulsion administration were used to establish hyperlipidemia model. The biochemical indices were assayed after administration of FG, HP, and BI. Their effects were evaluated by factor analysis. Alterations of gut microbiota and short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the cecal were assessed to illustrate the mechanism of lipid lowering.ResultsThe supplementation of FG, HP, and BI on HFD-fed rats decreased the levels of serum lipid and reduced the HFD-related liver and testicle damage. In the scatter plot of factor analysis, HP and BI were closer to normal fat diet (NFD) group in restoring the severity of hyperlipidemia, while FG and HP enhanced the excretion of cholesterol and bile acids (BAs). The levels of total SCFAs, especially butyric acid reduced by HFD were increased by HP. The ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes increased by HFD was reduced by HP and BI. FG, HP, and BI enriched intestinal probiotics, which were related to bile acid excretion or lipid-lowering.ConclusionsFG inhibited the absorption of cholesterol and enhanced the excretion of it, as well as increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria. While BI restored the imbalance of intestinal microbiota. HP enhanced the excretion of cholesterol and BAs, and restored the imbalance of intestinal microbiota. It was also utilized by intestinal microorganisms to yield SCFAs. This study suggested that FG, HP, and BI possessed the potential to be utilized as dietary supplements for obesity management.

Atrazine (ATR) is a widely applied herbicide which was named an environmental endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC). Increasing evidence indicates ATR causes neurotoxic effects resulting in central nervous system (CNS) disease. As the primary immunocytes in the CNS, microglia cells carry out their phagocytosis to maintain the CNS microenvironment by preventing damage from healthy cells. However, the mechanism in which ATR affects the phagocytic function of microglia remains unclear. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of ATR on the phagocytosis of microglia. BV-2 cells and primary microglia selected as microglial models in which BV-2 cells were administrated by ATR at different concentrations (0, 4, 8, 16 μM) for 24 h. Results demonstrated ATR dose-dependently increased the expression of ionized calcium binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba-1), indicating that microglia were activated. Microglial phagocytotic activity induced by ATR fluctuated at the different time points, accompanied by fluctuations in membrane receptor MERTK and cytoplasmic lysosomal marker LAMP1 (two markers related to cell phagocytosis). In this period, the expression of iNOS gradually increased. A mechanistic study further demonstrated that the translocation of High Mobility Group Protein-B1 (HMGB1) from nucleus to cytoplasm in the BV-2 and primary microglial cells induced by ATR, and the process showed a positive correlation with phagocytosis activity of BV-2 cells induced by ATR (r = 0.8030, P = 0.05; α = 0.1). ATR was also shown to spur the acetylation of HMGB1 by breaking the balance between acetylase P300 and deacetylase SIRT1. Unexpectedly, the inhibition of acetylating HMGB1 by resveratrol (Res) was effectively retained by HMGB1 in the nucleus, reversed the SIRT1 and MERTK expression, and enhanced the phagocytosis activity in BV-2 cells. Our results suggested that ATR exposure influenced microglial phagocytosis by acetylating HMGB1 further translocated it in the nucleoplasm.

The development of new energy vehicles has become a common choice for countries worldwide to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the global ecological environment, with China being no exception. However, challenges, such as finding charging stations, accessing residential areas, and highway charging, have hindered the green and high-quality growth of the new energy vehicle industry. This study, set against the backdrop of China’s 2018 policy to gradually redirect local purchase subsidy funds for new energy vehicles towards supporting the construction and operation of charging infrastructure, utilizes panel data from 282 prefecture-level cities from 2016 to 2021. A difference-in-differences model is constructed to compare the impact of infrastructure development on carbon emissions before and after the policy’s implementation. The study finds that policy has a negative effect on carbon emissions, especially in the second and third year after the policy’s implementation. Even after controlling for variables such as residents’ wealth levels, population size, environmental pollution, energy consumption, and government support, the results remain significant. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that the effect of the promotion of charging infrastructure on carbon emissions is greater in southern and central parts of China.

Abstract Dangerous driving, e.g., using mobile phone while driving, can result in serious traffic problem and threaten to safety. To efficiently alleviate such problem, in this paper, we design an intelligent monitoring system to detect the dangerous behavior while driving. The monitoring system is combined by a designed target detection algorithm, camera, terminal server and voice reminder. An efficiently deep learning model, namely Mobilenet combined with single shot multi-box detector (Mobilenet-SSD), was applied to identify the behavior of driver. To evaluate the performance of proposed system, a dangerous driving dataset,consisting of 6796 images, was constructed. The experimental results show that the proposed system can achieve the accuracy of 99%, and could be used for real-time monitoring of the drivers’ status.

Abstract Background Deep neck space abscess (DNSA) is a serious infection in the head and neck. Antibiotic therapy is an important treatment in patients with DNSA. However, the results of bacterial culture need at least 48 h, and the positive rate is only 30–50%, indicating that the use of empiric antibiotic treatment for most patients with DNSA should at least 48 h or even throughout the whole course of treatment. Thus, how to use empiric antibiotics has always been a problem for clinicians. This study analyzed the distribution of bacteria based on disease severity and clinical characteristics of DNSA patients, and provides bacteriological guidance for the empiric use of antibiotics. Methods We analyzed 433 patients with DNSA who were diagnosed and treated at nine medical centers in Guangdong Province between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2020. A nomogram for disease severity (mild/severe) was constructed using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator–logistic regression analysis. Clinical characteristics for the Gram reaction of the strain were identified using multivariate analyses. Results 92 (21.2%) patients developed life-threatening complications. The nomogram for disease severity comprised of seven predictors. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves of the nomogram in the training and validation cohorts were 0.951 and 0.931, respectively. In the mild cases, 43.2% (101/234) had positive culture results (49% for Gram-positive and 51% for Gram-negative strains). The positive rate of cultures in the patients with severe disease was 63% (58/92, 37.9% for Gram-positive, and 62.1% for Gram-negative strains). Diabetes mellitus was an independent predictor of Gram-negative strains in the mild disease group, whereas gas formation and trismus were independent predictors of Gram-positive strains in the severe disease group. BackgroundTotal pharyngolaryngoesophagectomy (TPLE) is considered as a curative treatment for hypopharynx cancer and cervical esophageal carcinomas (HPCECs). Traditional pharyngo-gastric anastomosis is usually performed manually, and postoperative complications are common. The aim of this study was to introduce a new technique for mechanical anastomosis and to evaluate perioperative outcomes and prognosis.MethodsFrom May 1995 to Nov 2021, a series of 75 consecutive patients who received TPLE for a pathological diagnosis of HPCECs at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital were evaluated. Mechanical anastomosis was performed in 28 cases and manual anastomosis was performed in 47 cases. The data from these patients were retrospectively analyzed.ResultsThe mean age was 57.6 years, and 20% of the patients were female. The rate of anastomotic fistula and wound infection in the mechanical group were significantly lower than that in the manual group. The operation time, intraoperative blood loss and postoperative hospital stays were significantly higher in the manual group than that in the mechanical group. The R0 resection rate and the tumor characteristics were not significantly different between groups. There was no significant difference in overall survival and disease-free survival between the two groups.ConclusionThe mechanical anastomosis technology adopted by this study was shown to be a safer and more effective procedure with similar survival comparable to that of manual anastomosis for the HPCECs patients.

Purpose: Hyperprolactinaemia has been proposed to play a role in breast lesions pathophysiology. Thus far, controversial results have been reported for the relationship between hyperprolactinaemia and breast lesions. Moreover, the prevalence of hyperprolactinaemia in a population with breast lesions is scarcely reported. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of hyperprolactinaemia in Chinese premenopausal women with breast diseases, and explore the associations between hyperprolactinaemia with different clinical characteristics.Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study performed in the department of breast surgery of Qilu hospital of Shandong University. Overall, 1,461 female patients who underwent the serum prolactin (PRL) level assay before breast surgery from January 2019 to December 2020 were included. Patients were divided into two groups: before and after menopause. Data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 software.Results: The results showed an elevated PRL level in 376 of the 1,461 female patients with breast lesions (25.74%). Furthermore, the proportion of hyperprolactinemia among premenopausal patients with breast disease (35.75%, 340/951) was significantly higher than among postmenopausal patients with breast disease (7.06%, 36/510). In premenopausal patients, the proportion of patients with hyperprolactinaemia and the mean serum PRL level were significantly higher in those diagnosed with fibroepithelial tumours (FETs) and in younger patients (aged < 35 years) than in those with non-neoplastic lesions and in those aged ≥ 35 years (both p < 0.05). Especially, the prolactin level exhibited steady ascending tendency for positive correlation with FET.Conclusion: Hyperprolactinaemia is prevalent in Chinese premenopausal patients with breast diseases, especially in those with FETs, which implies a potential association, to some extent, between the PRL levels in various breast diseases.

BackgroundThe maturity and spatial distribution of tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) vary dynamically within and between cancers, leading to a controversial role in cancer. We aimed to develop a simple morphology-based approach to identify the maturity of TLSs in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and examine their clinically relevant functional role.MethodsTLSs were identified based on morphological features via hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, and the accuracy was verified by multi-immunohistochemical analysis. The density, maturity, spatial distribution and prognostic value of TLSs were separately analyzed in two human laryngeal cancer cohorts. The TLS profile was linked to RNA-seq data from the TCGA database to perform bioinformatics analysis.ResultsTLSs can be classified as early TLSs (E-TLSs), primary follicle-like TLSs (PFL-TLSs) and secondary follicle-like TLSs (SFL-TLSs). The three types of TLSs showed higher infiltration in the extratumoral region. XCL2 is a vital chemokine in the maturation and infiltration of TLSs. FL-TLS was an independent positive prognostic indicator in laryngeal cancer. The FL-TLS group had more abundant immune cell infiltration and a better response to immunotherapies than the non-FL-TLS group. Functional analysis showed that the non-FL-TLS group was enriched in tumor invasion, metastasis and immunosuppression pathways.ConclusionThe maturity of TLSs can be accurately classified by H&E staining. FL-TLS is a potential mediator of antitumor immunity in human laryngeal cancer.

Legume/cereal intercropping has the potential to maximize the use of resources to raise yields due to enhanced nitrogen (N) fixation by legume root nodules, while high N fertilization may inhibit the nodulation of legume. However, whether legume/cereal intercropping can promote the accumulation of soil N storage with N fertilization and its underlying mechanism are less clear. Here, we evaluated the long-term (5 years) effects of maize/peanut intercropping and mineral N fertilization on peanut soil total N content and soil N cycling functional genes. The experiment includes two planting patterns (peanut maize intercropping and peanut monocropping) with three N fertilization rates (0, 150, and 300 kg N ha−1). Intercropping increased soil total N content (STN) by average 18.2%, and the positive effect of intercropping on STN decreased with N application rate. Highest N application decreased the nodule fresh weight (NFW) by 64.3% and 46.0% in intercropping and monocropping system, respectively. However, intercropping has no effect on NFW. Intercropping increased the nifH gene abundance by average 26.5%. SEM analysis indicated that NFW and nifH gene abundance combined can explain 46% of the variance of STN. Our results indicate that biological N fixation but not mineral N fertilization enhances the accumulation of N in soil planted with peanut in maize/peanut intercropping system.

Abstract Background Social determinants of health (SDH), including food insecurity, are associated with depression in the general population. This study estimated the prevalence of depression and food insecurity and evaluated the impact of food insecurity and other SDH on depression in adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods Adults (≥ 18 years) with RA were identified from the 2013–2014 and 2015–2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Depression was defined as a score of ≥ 5 (mild depression: 5–9; moderate-to-severe depression: 10–27) using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Food insecurity was assessed with the 18-item US Household Food Security Survey Module. Adults with household-level marginal-to-very-low food security were classified as experiencing food insecurity. The prevalence of depression and food insecurity among participants with RA were estimated. Weighted logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between depression and participants’ characteristics including SDH. Penalized regression was performed to select variables included in the final multivariable logistic regression. Results A total of 251 and 276 participants from the 2013–2014 and the 2015–2016 NHANES, respectively, had self-reported RA. The prevalence of depression among these participants was 37.1% in 2013–2014 and 44.1% in 2015–2016. The prevalence of food insecurity was 33.1% in 2013–2014 and 43.0% in 2015–2016. Food insecurity was associated with higher odds of having depression (OR 2.17, 95% CI 1.27, 3.72), and the association varied by depression severity. Compared with participants with full food security, the odds of having depression was particularly pronounced for those with very low food security (OR 2.96, 95% CI 1.48, 5.90) but was not significantly different for those with marginal or low food security. In the multivariable regression, being female, having fair/poor health condition, any physical disability, and ≥ 4 physical limitations were significantly associated with depression. Conclusions In adults with self-reported RA, the prevalence of depression and food insecurity remained high from 2013 to 2016. We found that depression was associated with SDH such as food insecurity, although the association was not statistically significant once adjusted for behavioral/lifestyle characteristics. These results warrant further investigation into the relationship between depression and SDH among patients with RA.

Body image (BI) is a multidimensional construct that refers to one’s perceptions of and attitudes toward one’s own physical characteristics. Adolescence is a critical developmental stage in which concerns about BI increase. Therefore, the present cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate body image and aesthetic body shape standards in a sample of middle school students living in China. The researchers gathered demographic information, as well as height and weight data, for their study. They used a body silhouette to assess body image perception and body shape aesthetics and calculated two indexes: BIP, which measures the accuracy of self-perception and the estimation of bodily dimensions, and BIS, which indicates the difference between an individual’s perceived and ideal body images. A total of 1585 students in three grades at two middle schools were included in the study (759 = female, mean age = 13.67 ± 0.90; 839 = male, mean age = 13.70 ± 0.90). The results showed that the BIP bias rate of middle school students was 55.7%, and the BI dissatisfaction rate was 81.0%. Females tended to overestimate their body shape and desire to be thinner compared to males. Students with a higher BMI grading were more prone to underestimating their body shape and aspiring to be thinner. Furthermore, 8.6% of students chose underweight as the ideal body type for boys, while 22.6% chose underweight as the ideal body type for girls. In conclusion, there are significant gender differences in the aesthetic standards of body shape, and adolescents believe that for women, a thin body shape is beautiful.

Objectives: This study aimed to explore the dignity and related factors among older adults in long-term care facilities. Methods: Cross-sectional data were obtained from a sample of 253 Chinese older adults dwelling in long-term care facilities. Dignity among older adults was measured using the Dignity Scale, and its potential correlates were explored using multiple linear regressions. Results: Results showed that the total score of the Dignity Scale is 151.95 ± 11.75. From high to low, the different factors of dignity among older adults in long-term care facilities were as follows: caring factors (4.83 ± 0.33), social factors (4.73 ± 0.41), psychological factors (4.66 ± 0.71), value factors (4.56 ± 0.53), autonomous factors (4.50 ± 0.57), and physical factors (4.38 ± 0.55). A higher score of the Dignity Scale was associated with higher economic status, fewer chronic diseases, less medication, better daily living ability and long-time lived in cities. Conclusion: Older adults with low economic status, more chronic diseases, and poor daily living ability, taking more medications, or the previous residence in rural areas seem to be most at low-level dignity in long-term care facilities and thus require more attention than their peers.
